PROBE

As your new media reps we hope you enjoy this quarters edition of Probe! If you’d like to contribute to this publication or provide feedback, feel free to contact us on media@udss.net
Another year of Probe! I hope everyone is ready for four more blockbuster issues of the UDSS publication that’s made by students for… well, just about anyone interested in the happenings of UDSS! Another amazing committee of 27 students have assembled and volunteered their time to ensure that the students are well represented, and to fill up the UDSS calendar with an abundance of events that you do not want to miss out on.
Firstly, a huge thanks to the 2017 Committee for all their efforts and ensuring that the 2018 Committee have a seamless transition into their roles. It’s going to be hard to top last year’s schedule of events and achievements but we’re certainly going to give it a good go!
As always, all year cohorts are represented through their Class Representatives. The DMD 1 cohort of 2018 is the first of a new course structure, and although they may not be seen on-site at the Dental School too much in this their first year, they
are still definitely part of the DMD community and are well represented through their class reps Adam Kadri and Sally Tan.
The previous Education Representatives put in a phenomenal amount of effort in laying down the foundations for UDSS to incorporate a significant amount of educational initiatives into our event calendar, and with events like Clinical Tips seminars and the continuation of Journal Club, the 2018 Educational Representatives are committed to ensuring that educational initiatives remain as one of our core goals.
As with any year, us dental students need to relax once in a while and our Junior Social Representatives and Sports Representatives are in charge of hosting a series of events throughout the year to help maintain the study-workclinic-life-sleep balance that we all obviously successfully maintain. The Senior Social Representatives are already putting in some hard yards to ensure that this year’s Dental Dinner is another spectacular,
and word on the street is that there’s going to be a bit of a change this year to make this event even more amazing so stay tuned for more details!
In case you were living under a rock ADSA Convention is coming to Perth this year, which means that UWA Dental School is going to host a HUGE week in July. Emma Turner is our ADSA representative for 2018 and she is heavily involved along with a few other students in working with the UWA Dental School to ensure that the 2018 ADSA Convention is a memorable one.
Finally, thanks to the 2018 Media Representatives for ensuring we have a great year of Probe magazine to look forward to. It’s about time last year’s media rep was given the boot…
Here’s to a huge 2018!

On Saturday the 24th of February the University Dental Student’s Society hosted their first social event of the year, Prime and Bond. The name of the event was chosen as such as it was the first opportunity for the first year dentistry cohort to bond with the older students. To encourage the first years to attend, their tickets to the event were free. As a consequence of this, the turnout from their cohort was great. In addition to this, students from all four cohorts, as well as other guests with connections to the dental school, were all in attendance and very eager to meet the new students. The event was held at the Captain Stirling Hotel in Nedlands.
Prime and Bond has been running annually for many years. We have to thank last years social representatives, Sarah and Claire, for helping us make
the event live up to the previous years. Hosting has been a great experience for the two of us and we can’t wait for the events to follow throughout this year.
Keely Johnson & Zoe Thorning – 2018 UDSS Social RepresentativesOn 18 Jan 2018, two of our DMD students, Emma Turner and Natasha Koelmeyer, ran a workshop to promote careers in dentistry as part of Scietech’s Future Doctors’ Programme
Over their hour-long session, they communicated the importance of dentistry in everyday life and its implications for general health, as well as the evolution of the profession and the distinction between careers in medicine and dentistry. Of particular interest to the students, each of the 13 dental specialties was explored either anecdotally, through videos, case studies or treatment plans. This helped the students to envisage the possibilities that a dental career would allow them to explore as health professionals. The session concluded with each student stepping into the shoes of a clinician by applying plaque disclosure solution to their partner’s teeth to demonstrate the effectiveness of their oral hygiene habits and to promote the importance of patient education.
Journal Club is back and running for its second year in 2018! Journal Club involves students pre-reading the prescribed articles for the relevant topic, followed by an interactive seminar discussing and critiquing the articles in question, and relating the concepts to clinical practice. Thank you to Dr Amanda Nyguyen, Oral Medicine Registrar for returning to Journal Club in February mediating the hot topic of Gingival and Mucosal Pathology. Welcome and thank you to our new education representatives Daniel Girgis and Ruth UM (DMD2) who have shown great enthusiasm and commitment to continue Journal Club in 2018 and beyond! Please save the date for our next meeting Tuesday 27th March on Oral Surgical Procedures for the General Dentist!
After a very busy, stressful, long and arduous year of intensive studies and having just completed final examinations, the UDSS Dental Dinner is the night every student looks forward to. It serves as a great way to finish off the year and for the students to relax and enjoy each other’s company and the company of the staff members in a more casual social setting. To conclude 2017, the Crown Towers was the venue of choice for the annual event, which took place 25th November.
Guests walked through the Big Top and into the ballroom, which was transformed into a Vintage Carnival. Guests were treated to some fresh popcorn as they watched a thrilling floorshow entertainment of acrobatics, juggling, ring manipulation, poi, LED effects, illusions and comedy. During food service, the performers roved around on stilts in between the tables mingling and posing for photographs. The dancefloor was pumping all night, but those who needed to catch their breath or for whom dancing isn’t their thing, could be found trying their luck at the Laughing Clowns and Lucky Numbers games in our very own SideShow Alley.
The 2017 Dental Dinner was the largest to date, selling a record number of tickets and filling the capacity of the ballroom. We had students from the DMD, DClinDent and OHT courses and of course notable staff members. We were very lucky to have had generous support from our Major Sponsors MDA National, Digident Laboratories, Bank of Queensland, LifeCare Dental, Class 1 Orthodontics, Envision Medical Imaging, and other generous friends of UDSS, without whom an event to this scale could not be possible.
Dr Keenan Inderjeeth and Dr Claudia MarinoBackground and Universities of Graduation:
Born and raised in Antwerp, Belgium.
My native language is Flemish (same as Dutch, but slightly different pronunciation, probably like American and British English), but I also speak French, German and English.
1993, University of Ghent in Belgium: dental degree
1997, University of Ghent in Belgium: Paediatric Dentistry and Special needs 2008, University of London in UK: Master of dental and maxillofacial radiology
Experience:
Ghent University and Ghent University Hospital : Taught local anaesthesia, dental and maxillofacial radiology and co-teach in the cariology/dental prevention course
University of Washington in Seattle, USA: Taught the entire dental and maxillofacial radiology course and set up a radiology interpretation service
University of Western Australia: Discipline Lead Dentomaxillofacial Radiology (29 January 2018)
Most memorable dental school experience:
My most memorable dental school experience was in the first week of my final year when I was approached by every department chair of the dental school, championing for their discipline and to convince me to pick their department to become a specialist. I decided to apply to paediatric dentistry and wrote a letter explaining why I excluded the other disciplines. The interview was fun and within an hour the entire school knew I was accepted. The other department chairs congratulated me, but I could sense their disappointment. Nevertheless, I maintained good relationships with all departments in my further career at my alma mater. My publications reflect my interests in all dental disciplines, which is paramount in dentomaxillofacial radiology.
What do I do to unwind:
I love my job and my job feels like a hobby. But I guess my real hobbies are photography, hiking, biking and attempting to play golf. The Perth climate will definitely have a positive impact on all of the latter.
University of Graduation:
Universidade Metodista de Sao Paulo, Brazil (UMESP) in 2000.
Most memorable Dental School Experience:
I would have to say that the most memorable moment during my graduation was when I got assigned my first patient and her smile after I finished her treatment. It is a feeling I don’t think I will ever forget.
What do I do to unwind:
For the last 4 years my favorite thing to do is spend time with Valentina, my daughter. Every waking moment that I have (that I don’t have to work, that is) I choose to spend with her.
University of graduation:
University of São Paulo, in Brazil
Most memorable dental school experience:
There were many memorable moments during my years at the dental school, but I believe my first day in the clinic doing a procedure in a patient was really special. It was in the Prosthodontic Discipline clinic and I had to take impressions of an edentulous patient. Fortunately the patient was very cooperative so it was not a traumatic experience. Perhaps this account for my interest in prosthodontics.
What do you normally do to unwind:
I like to go surfing, it’s my favourite activity. This is how I relax because all my problems stay outside the water.
