Beforewritingutensilswerecreated,peoplepasseddownstories orally.Peopletoldstoriestoexplainthewondersaroundthem.As timepassed,though,newinventionsweremadetopreservethese storiesforgenerationstocome.

Thefirsttypeofwritingwasmadeonstonetablets around3500BCE.Thesymbols,orwords,were etchedintotheclayorstonetabletsusingstyluses. Theearliestknownformofwritingwasknownas Cuneiform

Astimepassed,newformsofwritingemerged.By 2400BCE,thePapyrusscrollswereused.Thefirst knownscrollwasdescoveredinEgypt.ThispaperlikematerialwasmadewiththestemofthePapyrus plant.Thepieceswerethengluedtogethertomakea smoothsurfacetowriteon.TheEgyptiansused stylusesandalsobirdfeathersaswritingtools. Thesescrollswerestoredinwoodenboxesto protectthem.Lateron,thescrollswerethenglued togethertocreatebooks.These‘books’couldbe40 meterslong!

Notlongafterthis,parchmentwasfirstused. Between500-200BCE,parchment,amaterialmade fromanimalskin,wasused.Theriseinpriceof Papyrusledtotheincreaseofuseofparchment.

Around200BCE,theRomansandGreeksstarted usingWaxedTablets.Thesewereblocksofwood coatedwithwax.Peopleusedstylusestowriteon them.Thetabletcouldalsobeerasedwhich allowedittobereused.Acodex,ortwowaxed tabletsattachedtoeachother,wereconsidered thefirstboundbooks.

By600CE,therewasanestablishedwriting styleinMediterraneanculture.Thisresulted inthestandardlefttorightwritingsystem thatisstillusedinwesternculturestoday. Parchmentisanimalskinthatislimedandnot tanned,unlikeleather.Thisresultsinitnot beingwaterproof.Someparchment,knownas vellum,wasconsideredtobethebestwriting materialevercreated.

In1995thefirstonlinebookseller, Amazon,startedsellingbooks.Thiswas tomakebooksmoreavailablethanjust atthelocallibraryorbookstore.By 2007thekindlebecamethefirste-book reader.

Intheyear1985,thefirstbookCDwas made.Thisbook,AcademicAmerican Encyclopedia’wasthefirstaudiobook madeintoaCD.Beforethis,audiobooks wereoncassettetapes.

The first movable type was invented around 1041-1230 CE by a man named Bi Sheng. The letters were created from wooden blocks and then were placed on a board. The ink however, soaked into the blocks, which made them uneven. This led to people turning to clay tablets instead of wood and later on to metal

Ataroundthistimeaswell,illustrationswereadded topaperforavisualeffect.By400-600CE,the handwrittenbooksweredecoratedwithgoldand silverlining.TheseoriginatedinItaly.

By1439-1450CE,thefirstmovable typewasinventedinEuropeby JohannesGutenberg.Thisinvention ledtothewidespreadproduction andprintingofbooks.Thisprinting pressalsoprintedthefirstBible.The useofchlorineallowedthepagesof thebookstobewhiteandnota yellowishbrown.

Duringthe9thcentury,newtechnology emergedthatwouldchangebooksforever.In theyear868CE,thefirstprintedbookwas created,usingtheChinesetechniqueofblock printing.Thisformofprintingwasmadeby carvinglettersorsymbolsintothewoodin reverse.Thenyouwouldputinkonthese groovesandpresstheblockonapieceof paperorcloth.Carvingwoodthiswayis knownasXylography.
