CONNECT - An Approach to workspace design 2022 | Individual project

To design an IT commercial office in city of Bangalore considering program requirements and an approach maximizing per sq ft area. (followed green energy building rules)

Banglore, India

Office, workspaces, Space planning & maximizing per sq foot AutoCAD, Photoshop, Sketchup, Twinmotion, Microsoft Suite

CONNECT - an IT company based in Banglore with program requirement of 380 employee desks and other required spaces (cabins and meeting rooms) - The aim is to maximize the per sq ft area and follow the LEED rules of green energy building.

The final outcome is accommodating 420 people and 20 percent extra cabin spaces than specified on the requirement sheet which fulfills the aim of maximiz ing per sq ft area.

The process followed calculation of ratios such as one meeting room chair is for eight employees in office. Therefore 1 : 8 ratio for meeting room space, 1 : 6 for collaboration and 1 : 10 for breakout spaces. This is done to understand if enough space exists for every employee at different spaces.

PROGRAM AND EXPLORATIONS

WHAT ARE GOAN HOUSES TO ME ?

Interactive, Joyous and extrovert in nature. A space which stands out for users.

DESIGN INTENT

To offer user multiplicity of oblique views through house by shifting cone of vision and an array of parallel transparent interior spaces to connect with exterior

SPATIAL EXPLORATIONS

31

The required spaces were noted and placed based on the intended user experience.

The upper level is added to divide the volume vertically.

The 18m X 9m grid was broken down into smaller grid to understand parallel volumes and connection with the window.

Layout being tried based on required space and number of entries in one house to maintain privacy for landlady.

Landlady being directly connected to the street helped to retain the goan house identity where owners are connected to streets through veranda or balconies.

The main core space needed more area as activities like common bathroom, living room, kitchen and dinning were the key activities of the characters in common.

Traveler’s private space is kept constant on upper level to maintain the privacy of both landlady and traveler. One Entry on towards west gave an advantage of landlady being connected to it.

The arches being used for sub diving the space and to establish strict movement guiding towards the core space by shifting the cone of visions during the movement, as shown in the models.

THE EUPHONY

2020 | Individual project

Task: Site: Keywords: Softwares:

Its was to study and analyze existing joineries for designing a door, window and staircase and later using the output to design a structure.

CEPT University, India

Music, Culture at cept, joineries, working drawings

AutoCAD, Photoshop, Indesign, Sketchup, Rhino, Lumion

The proposed space used by students at CEPT campus is designed according to the needs of a student who necessarily works for 24*7 hours related to the field they are in. Thus, a space dedicated to jamming sessions and extra curricular activities is named ‘the euphony’. The word ‘euphony’ means ‘sound produced’.

The site interacts with maximum foot fall area of the campus. i.e. the cept can teen, axis established from Shrenik Bhai Plaza (at CEPT) in the south to lawns in north. Therefore, the presence of music in these areas, considering all the activi ties helps to relax.

The intent was to achieve a structure which blends subtly with its contextual surroundings and offers peaceful and pure natural experience at campus.

Architect: Basil spence and partners Characteristics: The screens adjoining the main doors to scape are made up of hardwood members tongued and grooved with an elongated tongue to give a rimed effect.

Aesthetically , in the doors the joint is replaced by glazed, inch wide slots. The doors and the screen in a aformosia, and all the hardwood is varnished.

STAIRCASE

Threw is nothing particularly new about the cantilevered stair treads. What is of interest is the problem of the offside handrail has been faced

A Swedish pine rail, massively reinforced with steel, runs direct from the lower to the upper structural floor.

The treads on being cast into the wall are tilted slightly upwards so that they settle to the horizontal

SITE ANALYSIS

Factors affecting the site through out the day

Sun light- Being attached to the FA building the necessary shade for the space during the day

• Events and activities on campus- Through out the year many event are organized on a large scale and require adequate space. The site interacts with all such space on campus life.

• Wind Direction- The wind direction has been proven beneficial for space as the cross ventilation and air circulation has been taken care of.

• Footfall at canteen lunch break and dinner

• Foliage

CONCEPT

PROGRAM- Considering the peaceful environment at CEPT University and lifestyle of the students working 24 hours for 7 days of the week, A Jamming is proposed. ‘THE EUPHONY’.

The word Euphony means sound produced. The site interacts with the maximum footfall area of the campus (The canteen) , axis established from the shrenikbhai plaza in the south to north Therefore the presence of music in these areas helps to relax

DESIGN INTENT- The intent is to design a space, which is subtle, pure and peaceful and becomes a part of the CEPT Campus.

DESIGN CONSIDERATION

• View points

• Circulation not being disturbed

• Number of people 10 - 15

• A trans-formative space, which will help to use closed and semi open space at the same time.

• Established axis not to be disturbed.

• Language of the campus

• How will the proposed space respond to the water body and the peaceful north lawns?

• Space for sitting and music instruments.

PROCESS

Stage 1 : The space and the staircase turned out to be a huge chunk and wasted a lot of space. Secondly, the intent of merging the closed and open space did not work out

Stage 2 : The reduction of floor plate did not work well. Secondly, the main aim of using the curves to provide view points was not fulfilled.

Stage : 3 The spiral staircase is twisted around the trunk of the tree. This helped to cut down the huge appearance of the staircase. This also helped not to disturb the circulation in the canteen area.

Stage : 4 The change in shape of the closed space, helped to fulfill the intent of trans-formative space, To use two different spaces as one when required and function well.

Final stage : the curve helped to establish cer tain sets of view points but also utilized space more than required. Thus the semi open space ran par allel to the closed space.

40 PROGRAM

ELEMENT DETAILS

SPATIAL PLAN

FLOORING AND ROOFING DRAWING

While deciding the flooring for space and staircase, it was important to pick a color which will blend and be functional as well. For example, the musical instruments like drum, required a rough surface for its placement. Rather than making a separate step for the specific instruments, a stone with rough texture is preferred. Therefore, black kadappa stone 50mm thick was chosen for the flooring of the overall project.

41

ELEMENT DETAILS

DOOR DETAIL

STAIRCASE DETAIL

• The intent was to design a staircase which adapted the surrounding and did not hinder the circulation.

• Secondly, while deciding the location the most important criteria was the location. The spiral itself acts out to be huge and voluminous. Thus, the trunk of the tree played the key role to let the staircase adapt the surroundings.

• Thirdly, being ‘a drum’ concept based design. An attempt is being made here to consider the studied proportions while designing the ‘installation’ as a part of ‘intervention.

FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSE

Skills explored : Model making, exploring intangible qualities of a space and Digital representation

An abstract model is used for abstracting intangible qualities of a space and exploring power of transparen cy in space.

A model is made to understand light quality explorations in underground spaces to enhance the user experi ence.

46

PART TWO (RESEARCH BASED)

FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSE

Skills explored : Research work in post occupancy of projects

This research is a post - occupancy research for ATMA Building in Ahmedabad, India by Le corbusier. The aim of research was to understand architectural attributes of the design and conclude how it impacted the modernism era in India.

Prose from the research paper :

IMPACT OF MODERNIZATION ON BUILDINGS WITH CONTEXT DIFFERENTIATION

Considered two buildings in India by Le Corbusier, in two different cities with different climatic conditions, the impact of architectural philosophy was still kept quite similar within the two sites. The kick-start was a following of western functionalism, coping up with developed countries and most importantly giving a new beginning to India’s approach towards modernism.

The two buildings were designed for two different programmatic requirements. Mill Owner’s building being a private hub for the city’s richest mill owners to collaborate with - Chandigarh’s Assembly palace was meant for government officers and a space for them to functionally perform well. The program and scale of the site impacted the key design decisions in terms of scale of entry, nearby adjacent buildings and land form.

All the five points of architecture being boasted in both the buildings with varying approach to scale. For example scale of ramp vs huge volumetric entrance leading to open plan respectively respected the use and approach of building design elements.
