I love her training style; she definitely changes her style to suit the student. ...Her experiences have led her to be full of knowledge and understanding of situations within the work place and how you as a student can deal with them. Everyone in my team that has worked with Christine has enjoyed their time together and I am pleased to say a 100% pass rate”.

Guide to Apprenticeships

What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a nationally recognised programme of training and development, usually involving a job, a trainee and a training provider or co-ordinator. Your responsibility as an employer is to ensure that your apprentice has a contract of employment which complies with statutory minimum guidelines for pay, terms, conditions and entitlements (check the glossary for current national guidelines), an opportunity to develop and train by working alongside experienced staff and a commitment to work with Rewards to ensure that your apprentice has the right amount of access to a professional trainer and assessor to ensure that they can complete their learning and achieve their Apprenticeship qualification.

Apprenticeships often attract funding from the department for Business, Innovation and Skills through the Skills Funding Agency. Our advisors will ensure any funding to which your business is entitled is co-ordinated and used to fund the support we provide you and your apprentice.

How to Build an Apprenticeship Programme

Apprenticeships will typically consist of 4 distinctive parts all designed to complement each other and ensure those who successfully complete them achieve a broad understanding of their job role and the sector in which they have chosen to work. Competence Based Qualification

Achieved by building a portfolio of evidence to prove that training has turned into consistent performance at work to a national standard. Knowledge Based Qualification

Achieved by passing a number of exams to demonstrate knowledge of the sector, job role and specific technical points. Functional Skills

Essential skills in the use of English language, maths and ICT where appropriate. Achieved by passing a series of national exams. Employment Rights and Responsibilities

A project designed to ensure your apprentice has a full understanding of the sector in which you work and the responsibilities they have whilst working for you.

Hospitality

An Apprentice interested in cookery could either train as a chef in a restaurant, or learn how to cook on a large scale for institutions like the NHS or armed forces. There are specialist pathways to cover all kinds of fare, including Bangladeshi, Thai, Chinese, and Indian.

This Apprenticeship covers a range of occupations within hospitality and catering, one of the largest industries in the country. Hospitality and catering covers work in restaurants, hotels and holiday accommodation, cafés, pubs, and contract caterers – it also supplies other industries with food and drink. Schools, colleges, hospitals and large businesses nearly always have canteens and catering staff too.

Apprentices more interested in the hospitality side of the sector could work in a hotel reception area; learn to run a B&B or youth hostel; or keep a hotel crisp and clean.

Successful completion of the Advanced Level Apprenticeship could lead to management or supervisory roles.

For more information about Hospitality Apprenticeships contact our Commercial Director Paul Williams

Section 7

Health & Social Care

Completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship can lead to Higher Education in subjects like nursing or midwifery and operating department practitioner roles in the care sector or management roles in care homes. This Apprenticeship covers a wide range of job roles on two pathways: the adult social care pathway and the health care pathway. This could mean working in the NHS, the private sector, local authorities or in the voluntary sectors. Social care is about helping people with a particular need, such as the disabled, the elderly or people with learning disabilities. This type of care usually takes place in the home or in care homes or out in the community, and can include anything from helping people get dressed to transporting them to and from a residential home or taking them shopping. As an apprentice in Social Care, could be a personal care assistant helping someone in their everyday life.

On the Health Care pathway, an Apprentice could work in hospitals, the community, hospices or private clinics as a healthcare support worker or a healthcare assistant. Supporting doctors or nurses or helping patients in hospital wards or their homes – serving food, making and changing beds and so on.

Effective training

Over 200 people are killed each year in accidents at work and over one million people are injured. Over two million suffer illnesses caused by, or made worse by, their work. Preventing accidents and ill health caused by work is a key priority for everyone. As the owner or manager of a business you know that competent employees are a valuable resource.

Providing health and safety information and training helps you ensure your employees are not injured or made ill by the work they do, and to develop a positive health and safety culture, where safe and healthy working becomes second nature to everyone.

Find out how you could manage health and safety more effectively and meet your legal duty to protect the health and safety of your employees. Contributing to helping your employees become competent in protection of health and safety, can help your business avoid the distress that accidents and ill health cause and avoid the financial costs of accidents and occupational ill health. Don’t forget that your insurance doesn’t cover all these costs. Damaged products, lost production and demotivated staff can all result.

The law requires that you provide whatever information, instruction and training is needed to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of your employees.

Apprenticeship Agreement

By employing an Apprentice, you will have given a young person an opportunity to start work in your industry and learn a trade from the experts you already employ with guidance from Rewards expert trainers and assessors.

What an Apprentice can do for your business

Improve productivity: Because Apprentices will be receiving training at work throughout their programme they can have an immediate impact on your business. By learning ‘on the job’ they will quickly gain experience and confidence to complete more and more complex tasks

for you, freeing up other more experienced staff to help develop your business.

Motivate your staff: Apprenticeships are available to new and current employees of all ages. Giving an individual the opportunity to train in the workplace increases their motivation to succeed and makes them feel more valued.

Relevant training: Apprentices receive training that is relevant to your industry and to their job role providing direct support to help you train your staff.

Find you new employees: through our Academy programme we can help you find new employees, cut your recruitment costs and help screen suitable staff for your business.

This section is designed to give you a brief overview on how the Apprentice scheme will work for you and what you can expect from Rewards.

35

What is an Apprenticeship

our online resources. Assessment is via a series of formal exams.

Apprenticeships are primarily carried out at your workplace. Your Apprentice will spend time at work under your supervision. Your Apprentice will receive regular support from Rewards Trainers, mentors and assessors and have access to online training resources 24/7.

There are four key elements to an Apprenticeship:

Competence Based Qualification

By building a portfolio of evidence, your Apprentice will be able to complete a level 2 Intermediate, Level 3 Advanced or level 5 Higher qualification. This element forms the bulk of the work needed to complete the programme and is formally assessed as soon as your Apprentice has received the necessary training and you are satisfied with their level of competence. Your Apprentice will be required to complete a variety of projects and assignments as well as being visually and orally assessed for their competence.

Knowledge Based Qualification

Your Apprentice will study a full syllabus of knowledge about their job role and sector. Training will be co-ordinated by our team of trainers with a mix of one to one training and the use of

Functional Skills

Apprentices are required to demonstrate excellent English, maths (and ICT skills where appropriate). Everyone coming onto an Apprenticeship programme with Rewards will take a short series of assessments to determine their current level and put together a learning programme that uses a mix of training and online resources to help improve ability. This part of the course is concluded with a series of formal exams. Functional skills are completed when an Apprentice can prove they have the personal learning and thinking skills required to apply their knowledge and skills at work.

Employment Rights and Responsibilities

An important element of the Apprenticeship which is studied at the beginning of the course. A short assignment is designed to give your Apprentice an induction to the sector you work in and to confirm knowledge of important employment responsibilities.

Only by achieving all four of these elements can an Apprentice apply for their final certificate and apply for the next level of training.

36

The Lifecycle of an Apprentice

of the Apprenticeship programme and we will regularly review the progress of your Apprentices with you using this plan.

We will support you and your Apprentice during the programme. On average an Apprenticeship takes between 12-15 months to achieve with each course lasting for a minimum of 12 months to ensure that each Apprentice gains the necessary competence in their job role before completing their qualifications.

There are a number of ways in which you as an Apprenticeship employer will become involved directly with the programme.

Safety

Regular Visits

Your Apprentice will be assigned to an expert trainer and assessor who will be responsible for visiting your Apprentice on a regular basis usually every 2 - 4 weeks depending on the nature of the programme and level and experience of the Apprentice. Progress will be checked at each visit and we will seek your input and feedback as part of these visits. Progress reviews will be completed and you will be asked to review and sign these.

Quality Control

Firstly we will need to check that your employees are fully protected and working in a safe working environment. We will complete the check in this brochure with you to ensure all parties are working in line with our statutory requirements

Individual Learning Plans

At each stage of the training and assessment process the quality of the service you and your Apprentice receives will be checked. Our internal Quality Manager will be responsible for delivery of the best quality of training whom you will meet as part of the programme.

Our trainer will be drawing up an individual learning plan with you and each Apprentice you employ. This will detail all the components of the programme and include details on how and when training and assessment will be delivered. It is a vital part

What we expect of you

Learning plan: Your Apprentice’s trainer will arrange an appointment to draw up a plan of action to take into account all elements of the Apprenticeship programme. This will be done at the beginning and we will need your input or that of your Apprentice’s direct line manger.

On the job training: You and your Apprentice’s line manager will be responsible for arranging with your Rewards trainer, all the necessary induction and training your Apprentice will need to complete the competence element of the programme. You will need to make a commitment to your Apprentice to allow them to gain experience in a wide range of job tasks to allow them to build confidence and achieve the necessary elements of the qualification.

Commitment: Your encouragement and support for your Apprentice will be vital in order to get the most out of the programme of learning. We will make a check that a full induction has been completed and help you to plan development for each individual.

Attendance: We will need to make regular visits to your Apprentice to help them complete the programme. Some of these visits will be arranged for your Rewards trainer to assess an Apprentice whilst they are working and some will be to undertake off job training or exams. It is your responsibility to arrange necessary cover for your Apprentice to attend these sessions.

Contract of employment: All Apprentices enjoy the same contractural benefits as others in your organisation. Each Apprentice must have a contract of employment.

National Minimum Wage: Young Apprentices can be paid at a lower NMW, please see the rates set out in the glossary.

Holidays: All Apprentices are entitled to holiday as per your standard terms and conditions of employment.

Reviews: To help us review the progress of each Apprentice you employ we will seek your feedback at regular review visits, typically these are carried out once every four weeks, your Rewards trainer will seek your views during regular visits.

Health & Safety: We require a safe working environment for all Apprentices and our staff whilst we are on site with you. Please ensure your risk assessments are up to date and assessments cover the risks posed by working with young people if necessary.

We have provided an Apprenticeship agreement as part of the application pack. Each Apprentice is required to complete, please read it carefully before you sign it.
