Message from the Principal The final term of each year is always a mixture of activities that are planned for ending current programs of learning and detailed planning for the new academic year that is approaching.

Over coming weeks we will farewell the Class of 2018 as they complete their secondary studies, undertake their examinations and apply for Tertiary studies, employment or apprenticeships. We will celebrate their unique contribution to the Bayview College community over the last six years and join with the students and their families during the Valediction formalities.

Graduations bring mixed emotions for students; the joy of completion, but also the sadness that comes with the loss of the familiar routine and knowing that as a group of young people the next phase of their journey will include new faces and new places.

Over the next two weeks students and parents in Years 7 -10 will be engaged in Personal Learning Plan meetings with their chosen mentor teacher. These meetings are an extension of the Semester 1 PLP meetings that we have had the last two years for year 10 students, and provide each student and their parent with some dedicated time to fully explore their son’s or daughter’s aspirations, their passions and thus plan out a detailed plan for their learning over the coming year. At Bayview we are determined to continue to improve our processes and structures to enable students to take more ownership of their learning, so that it is relevant, challenging and personal.

It is also that time of the year when we seek our student leaders for 2018.

Students in Years 8 and 11 are invited to consider applying for leadership positions, to reflect on the type of student leadership that they can provide and consider ways to make a difference. John Hume said “I never thought in terms of being a leader. I thought very simply in terms of helping people.” We have a strong legacy of student leaders who in the past have left their mark on the school community because they did just that, they helped their peers and the wider school community.

We are also about to launch the Skoolbag App. Skoolbag is one of Australia’s most trusted school apps, empowering us to engage with parents/guardians through a simple and central communication platform.

The easy-to-use desktop and mobile app streamlines all aspects of organising school life, from newsletters and events to student attendance and documentation.

The App is available free now from the App store and Google play.

A great day for netball and students “never give up” attitude was the winner of the day!

There was a buzz of excitement and anticipation on the bus as we headed up to Heywood for the annual Junior Football and Netball competition against other local schools. The students were looking forward to catching up with friends and participating in a fun, and competitive tournament.

The netball team, comprising Jessian Borer, Paije Rose-Maher, Jemma Chapple, Ailish Duro, Kiani Beavis, Lilly Perkins and Cameron Friedrichs was coached by Sid Dent and umpired by Taylah Nelson.

With a fixture of 5 games, the girls were on court for a large part of the day. Despite very windy, chilly conditions the standard of netball was very good. There were some excellent passages of play and many goals were shot! My favourite aspect of the day was the encouragement, support and ‘never give up’ attitude shown by the Bayview girls. There was such great team camaraderie, they looked after each other and played like a team. Although we only came away with one win, the girls had a great time, developed their netball skills and displayed excellent sportsmanship.

Bayview College students fill a shoebox to bring smiles, hope and joy Bayview students have filled over nine shoe boxes bursting with simple gifts for children from disadvantaged communities in South East Asia. The shoe boxes have been gathered and will arrive in time for Christmas giving.

Operation Christmas child is the initiative of Samaritan’s Purse International relief and the concept has been operating since 1993. The shoe boxes are destined to make their way to children living in poverty in Cambodia, Vietnam, Fiji, Thailand and Papua New Guinea.

Students at Bayview have been participating in the program for the past 10 years. They know their contribution ensures that these children feel valued and not forgotten this Christmas.

The students acknowledge it feels fantastic to know a child will feel special and loved this Christmas. They hoped the items that have been carefully selected bring the children smiles, hope and joy.

The shoe boxes contain items including; something to love, something for school, something to wear, something special, something to play with and something for personal hygiene.

Maths Olympics had the students at Bayview College in stitches with his one-man comedy show!

Simon Pampena has developed a training session to turn our young potential into gold medal reality. Providing an hour of music, comedy, dance and maths, the Bayview College students learnt the type of passion needed to be #1 in the world’s greatest sport!

WheelTalk demonstrates disability is no barrier for success and a healthy lifestyle WheelTalk School Awareness Program made a visit to Bayview College to raise awareness and promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

The program encourages students to think about diversity, acceptance and disability sports, as well as developing a greater understanding of the issues facing people with a disability.

The fully-trained and experienced WheelTalk ambassador Gary Connor provided thought provoking discussion around the over-presentation of the 16-24 age groups in car crashes, contributed to by speeding, drugs and drink driving.

Gary highlighted the potential consequences of poor choices and risk taking behaviour, showing that lifealtering injuries can happen to anyone.

Students were given the unique opportunity to experience disability sport for themselves by participating in wheelchair basketball.

“We’re really excited to be hosting the WheelTalk Program at Bayview. It gave students the chance to have exposure to athletes with a disability and greater understanding of disability issues in the community” said Mr Andy Murrell, Bayview College Sports Co-ordinator.

Government House acknowledges National Youth Science Forum students Maddie Bryant, Sid Kerr and Caitlyn Billington, have been selected to attend the National Youth Science Forum in 2018 (Thanks to sponsorship from Rotary Club of Portland and Rotary Club of Portland Bay) They had the honour of attending a reception at Government House last week.

All three students had the privilege to meet and speak with the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria. Over 500 people were in attendance.

Bayview College staff conquered the Year 12’s in a friendly but very competitive game of Netball on the last day of Term 3.

Greater Western Region Athletics Six students represented Bayview College at this year’s Greater Western Region Athletics carnival held in Ballarat on Monday 18th September. Between these 6 students they competed in a total of 17 events and they were able to place either first, second or third in 11 of the events.

The outstanding performances for the day were Kellie Brewster being able to win the 16 girls hurdles in a record time of 17.32 seconds and Zane Barker winning the 16 boys 100m in a time of 11.67 seconds which was only 2 hundreds off the record time and also winning 200m in a time of 23.99 sec. Cameron Friedrichs also placed first in the Long Jump with a jump of 4.47 metres.

The individual performances were outstanding with Kellie Brewster as well as winning the Hurdles, placing second in the 16 girls Javelin and Triple jump, third in the Shot Put and fourth in the Long Jump. After winning the 100m and 200m, Zane Barker also placed second in the 110m hurdles and fifth in the triple jump. Cameron Friedrichs was able to add a second in the year 14 girls triple jump and a fifth in the 200m to her win in the Long Jump, whilst Jennifer Cain competing in her first Greater Western Region Athletics carnival placed second in the 13 girls Discus.

In the distance events, Charlie Harvey placed second in the 13 boys 1500m and Kate Gleeson was able to take out fourth place in each of the 16 girls 800m, 1500m and 3000m events.

A truly outstanding effort from all of our students and really reflected the effort the students were prepared to apply in order to achieve their best results.

The kind of P.A.R.T.Y all students should attend Unsafe driving, drinking and other risky behaviours can have devastating consequences for young people and this message was applied in a hands-on practical learning experience when Bayview College Year 11 students attended the P.A.R.T.Y Program in Warrnambool.

P.A.R.T.Y stands for Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth and had its beginnings in Toronto in Canada in 1986. While normally held at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the program has begun rolling out to students living in rural areas of Victoria.

The program gave the students a reality check of what real traumatic injuries look and feel like. They had the opportunity to speak with real life patients about what it is like to be in hospital and how their choices have impacted on their lives.

Students followed the path of a trauma patient through the hospital looking at their management in acute environments such as the trauma ward, emergency department and intensive care units and then focus on the long term impact and disability injuries can cause.

Taran Morton,17, felt the program was very effective for young people. “The examples and facts they used help to emphasise the point of the dangers of drinking or taking risks with drugs” Meg Schultz, 16, said it was important to talk to real people. “Being able to experience the PARTY program opened my eyes to the negative effect that alcohol and drugs can have on someone’s life.”
