UWGN has a long history of raising disaster funds in the community, including establishing the 9/11 Fund, the Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund and, most recently, the Newark Water Fund. To support the community and its non-profit partners during the COVID-19 crisis, UWGN established the Community COVID-19 Fund.

This is a regional fund serving its 13-municipality footprint, including Newark, Irvington, East Orange, West Orange, South Orange, Belleville, Nutley, Maplewood, Kearny, Harrison, East Newark and North Arlington.

Dear United Way Supporters, This year has been unlike any we’ve seen before. The global pandemic has had and continues to have an immense impact on our communities across Greater Newark. The spread of COVID-19 has exacerbated the economic disparities we already knew existed. This year, we’ve seen longer lines at food pantries, answered more calls from the community asking for our help, and distributed more funds than ever before.

While this year has been filled with challenges, United Way of Greater Newark has remained committed to serving our most vulnerable population and pivoted our work to provide critical services that meet the immediate needs of our community. Since March, we have supported local and small business owners, families and parents of young children, Newark youth, and local food pantries through our Small Business Grant Fund, Community COVID-19 Fund, Parent Exchange Program, and food distribution efforts, respectively.

As the year comes to an end, I am pleased to share United Way of Greater Newark’s 2020 Annual Report, which details our programs, partnership, and impact to date. We have a long road to recovery, but I am proud of the work we have done so far. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our volunteers, donors, partners, and other community members who have supported our work during this unprecedented time.

UNITED WAY SINCE COVID-19 MAKING AN IMPACT

United Way of Greater Newark’s Community COVID-19 Fund raised more than $4.9 million to support the local community.

Our Community COVID-19 Fund included Small Business Grants, Emergency Food Aid and the Parent Exchange Program.

United Way of Greater Newark (UWGN) convened conversations with partners in our collaboratives who provided social service relief to assist.

UWGN followed the guidelines established by FEMA and set up the fund to respond to the Four Phases of Emergency Management: PREPAREDNESS | MITIGATION | RESPONSE | RECOVERY To support the community and our non-profit partners during the COVID-19 crisis, United Way of Greater Newark established the Community COVID-19 Fund and established four categories of funding: INDIVIDUAL RELIEF | PUBLIC HEALTH NEEDS | NON-PROFIT/SOCIAL SERVICE RELIEF | LONG-TERM RECOVERY As we move towards long-term recovery, UWGN remains a vigilant partner to the community in supporting the needs of residents, social services and public health sectors. We will continue to distribute funds that are available and needed to support the community in 2021.

COMMUNITY COVID-19 FUND The economic impacts of COVID-19 have been great. The virus has affected small businesses, families and students we serve. United Way of Greater Newark tackled problems head-on to address the unique economic disparities our constituents faced with our 2020 COVID-19 relief response efforts. This included launching three new initiatives like our Small Business Grants, Community COVID-19 Fund, and Parent Exchange Program, which have helped meet the tremendous demand for food, basic needs and employment.

SMALL BUSINESS FUND

EMERGENCY FOOD AID

In conjunction with The City of Newark and Invest Newark, UWGN supported local businesses impacted by the pandemic.

UWGN partnered with the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, the Salvation Army, and MEND to facilitate Newark’s food distribution efforts and support pop-up pantries. We ensured that highquality food was distributed and provided grocerystore gift cards to residents in need.

United Way of Greater Newark received over 900 applications, rewarded 134 small businesses grants, and awarded more than $1 million to businesses in need in Newark.

• Nearly three quarters (74%) of applicants were unsure if they could or certain that they could no longer pay their rent.

• More than half of businesses that applied for the Small Business grant were minority or person of color owned (59%), locally-owned(58%), and woman-owned (54%). Over one quarter are immigrant-owned (27%).

We are committed to providing more funding In 2021 along with strategies for rebuilding Newark’s small business economy for the long-term.

FOOD AID: A COORDINATED APPROACH Too often, relief agencies work in silos, resulting in inefficient and unequal distribution of food. To prevent this from happening in Greater Newark, we convened the COVID-19 Community Fund Advisory group, made up of funders across the City of Newark, to identify which agencies needed aid and where there were gaps. Leveraging the COVID-19 Community Fund, we distributed food to pantries in Newark, Irvington, Maplewood, and all of the Oranges.

PARENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM The Parent Exchange program was launched in July to connect donors with young parents in desperate need of formula and disposable diapers.

The Parent Exchange Partnerships included: Isaiah House, Apostle House, 211 Strategies and Tree House Cares. All organizations received formula, baby food, baby furniture, and books.

EDUCATION NEWARK THRIVES

2020 HIGHLIGHTS:

United Way of Greater Newark welcomed Newark Thrives! in February 2020 as a new collaborative within UWGN. Newark Thrives ! works to improve access and participation in high-quality OST opportunities for Newark youth by leveraging resources, convening stakeholders and empowering young people and families. There are 250 out-of-school time (OST) after-school and summer programs in Newark.

• United Way of Greater Newark proudly accepted an extensive collection of 1,500 new books from Reach Out and Read New Jersey as part of a UWGN literacy initiative to bring new books to children during the pandemic.

• United Way of Greater Newark’s University of Chicago My Very Own Library received a 3 year grant to continue the program that began in 2011 and now services 35 Newark public schools.

MY VERY OWN LIBRARY This year, United Way of Greater Newark University of Chicago’s My Very Own Library program (MVOL) continued providing resources to partner schools that serve Pre K – 8th grade through its literacy initiatives. MVOL focuses on bolstering literacy and fostering a love of reading by empowering students to build their vocabulary by providing them the opportunity to choose brand new, free books to build their own home libraries. MVOL is in 35 Newark Public Schools.

INCOME Forging the pathway to financial stability starts with empowering members of our community.

In UWGN’s new strategic plan, we serve as a backbone agency. We work with partners on the ground through collective impact to provide vital financial supports through the Newark Asset Building Coalition, a network focused on increasing savings, reducing debt, increasing financial knowledge and skills, and improving access to wealth-building programs. Some of UWGN’s core services include; Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, Financial Literacy Classes and the FAFSA Challenge.

Although COVID-19 halted our programming at the midway point of the tax season, UWGN still finished the season, having filed taxes for almost 8,000 low-to-moderate income residents across the NABC network, which returned nearly $12M to the community.

HEALTH We are a key stakeholder and funder for the Believe in a Healthy Newark (BHN) network, a culture of health initiative aimed at addressing social determinants of health to improve health outcomes for the residents of the South and West Wards of Newark and the wider community.

In October UWGN’s served as a proud sponsor for the Believe in Healthy Newark conference. The virtual conference engaged nationally-recognized speakers to discuss the physical, social, emotional and economic impacts of COVID-19.

The Believe in Healthy Newark Conference brought together key stakeholders and thought leaders to discuss critical public health issues facing community members.

TESTIMONIALS Marianne, a small business owner, used her $500 emergency relief fund payment to pay some of her vendors. Some of her employees also got the grant.

The funding from United Way allowed us to accelerate the creation of a Fresh Food Hub, so we could serve as a vital resource of fresh and healthy food to a network of Essex County food pantries and other community organizations in response to COVID-19. Demand at the pantries has more than quadrupled since March and having access to a centralized space and van. Refrigeration equipment and staff to help match and manage the flow of food resources, has ensured that the food pantry community was equipped to accept and distribute high-quality food when it was most needed. While the crisis continues - this funding has made a tremendous and sustainable impact on hunger in our community. Robin Peacock, Executive Director, MEND

We were elated to serve as CHAMPIONS, raise funds for an awesome organization and raise awareness about the Parent Exchange Program and Community COVID-19 Fund to raise funds within our extensive network.

Tara’s husband passed away on April 18.

On top of her grief over losing her spouse, Tara also had to deal with the logistical problems that came from losing the medical insurance and financial stability that came with his job—and which she relied on. The grant gave Tara the relief she needed to keep moving forward.

“I’m happy to get the food, so when my grandchildren come over, I have additional food to feed them or send home with them.

I thank everyone involved.”

STAYING CONNECTED Members of United Way of Greater Newark’s communities receive exclusive communications with timely updates on United Way’s work and impactful stories on how their gift is being used to improve our friends’ and neighbours’ lives. This year, we had the incredible opportunity of hosting several special events throughout the year.

Earlier this year, we hosted our Women’s Leadership Breakfast where we had an important dialogue with an impressive group of women including; Newark Municipal Councilwoman LaMonica McIver and Collette V. Smith, the first woman to coach for the New York Jets and the National Football League’s first female African American coach. We also honoured Panasonic Foundation Executive Director Alejandra Ceja.

United Way of Greater Newark also had a unique opportunity to host a virtual Friend-raiser event, which included inspiring conversation and brought new insight into how young parents have been affected by the pandemic and how United Way of Greater Newark’s Parent Exchange Program is supporting families that need formula, wipes, and diapers.

In October, United Way of Greater Newark and board member, Tiffany Alice, co-hosted an event to discuss the importance of educating young children about Financial Literacy and Wellness. The event offered information and resources to help attendees address financial literacy with young children, teenagers, and themselves.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT We believe in the ability to transform communities through the power of volunteers. Volunteering can be a deeply rewarding experience where you can make immediate and lasting change by improving lives and building a stronger community.

In February, we kicked off 31 Years of Celebrity Read. Volunteers include fire-fighters, police officers, librarians, teachers and CEOs. Celebrity Read is one of the most anticipated programs where individuals volunteer to read to elementary school students.

It was a month of volunteering and reading and welcoming our Celebrity Readers and inspiring students to celebrate reading during February.

Community volunteers are an essential part of United Way’s impact strategy. United Way brings together local volunteers with diverse backgrounds to participate in their times in our program efforts.

This year volunteering looked differently. However, we had our community members ready to support our annual Newark FAFSA Challenge, an initiative to help Newark high school seniors and their parents complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the New Jersey Alternative Financial Aid Application for New Jersey Dreamers. United Way of Greater Newark helped to train 150 volunteers in 2020 to provide knowledgeable assistance to Newark parents and seniors. This year, everything was 100% virtual!
