A NEW SCHOOL YEAR This time of year is always exciting!

We are ready to begin the 2016 school year. There has been much accomplished over the summer. A new outdoor classroom will be ready for use, thanks to the financial support of the Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation. The tennis courts have been completely refurbished, work continues on the new Administration/ Gateway Academy site, and our new School Resource Deputy has been hired.

You probably have noticed the change in the appearance of our COMMUNICATOR. We hope you enjoy this format as we strive to share our story with you.

Welcome GLCS Resource Deputy Adam Kelm!

Adam Kelm is a Deputy with the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department (KCSD), he has been employed there for the past 15 years. He has worked both inside of the jail, and more recently on the road where he is currently a Field Training Officer.

Adam obtained his bachelor’s degree at Western Michigan University in 2000 with a major in Criminal Justice. After being hired at KCSD, he has received specialized training in several areas of Law Enforcement including Interviews and Interrogations and Critical Incident response training.

On his time off, Adam enjoys spending time with his family. He also is a runner and avid sport’s fan. Adam enjoys working with kids of all ages and is looking forward to teaming up with Gull Lake Community Schools.

There are many types of calls that are non-school emergencies, but are important. You can easily update your information and how you receive school notifications.

Winter is coming... Whoops! I meant to say auditions for the fall

show Game of Tiaras are coming. This adaptation of King Lear takes

a more popular approach to one of Shakespeare’s most compelling plays by adding in Disney-style princesses and major plot points from the popular tv show Game of Thrones to create one of the

funniest plays to hit Gull Lake in a long time. Auditions will be held after school September 12th and 13th in the theatre at the high

school and are open to any Gull Lake student. The biggest difference between the show and the play is that when you play the game of tiaras, everyone wins!

Also stop by the Richland Farmers Market at Gull Lake Middle School to see what sort of great things PAC is cooking up! The ever-so-

popular sugar scrub brand Strike the Set will be making its return.

Technology Bond Update

After a year long process of garnering feedback from students, staff, community members and valued stakeholders, Gull Lake Community Schools has moved forward with its latest series of device purchases utilizing bond money. The student voice was loud and clear in the request for a device that provided the opportunity for a pathway to attain the 5 C’s of Technology; Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Creativity, and Content availability. As a result, each GLHS student will be provided a Dell Chromebook to use throughout the school year. This device will allow students the opportunity to tackle the 5 C’s at anytime, anyplace, and at their own pace.

The majority of iPads previously utilized at GLHS will be repurposed to the K-5 buildings for student use individually and in small groups. Gull Lake Community Schools appreciates the continued support as we prepare students for the challenges of learning in the Digital Age.

But with as popular as these fantastic facial scrubs were at the

Richland Art Fair, they will go fast! These scrubs make great gifts for

Collaborate to Bring Technology to Resource Rooms The special education students at Ryan Intermediate and Gull Lake Middle School would like to give a great big thank you to Gull Lake United Way, Gull Lake Lions Club and Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation for their generous contributions toward new Chromebooks for the resource classrooms.

This technology allows the students to easily access curriculum materials, Google Classroom and special programs to enhance their individual learning styles.

Thank You!!!

What makes this technology unique to these students is the ability to easily and consistently access accommodation features such as Text to Speech to assist with writing assignments and Speech to Text to complete tests, assignments, and projects.

The students have enjoyed utilizing their new Chromebooks to enhance their education in a variety of ways and look forward to learning even more features next year. They know this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the organizations within our fantastic Gull Lake community. Thank You!!!!

Gull Lake Represents the State of Michigan in National History Day Competition This summer, with the financial help of the Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation, six of Pat Pearson’s history students took one of his research assignments beyond the classroom to compete as National Finalists in the National History Day (NHD) competition at the University of Maryland.

Pearson required all of his Advanced Placement students to choose a NHD project that illustrated the theme of “Explore, Encounter, Exchange” and then to present their projects to judges at a school level competition. The top qualifiers at the local level were invited to compete at a regional competition followed by state and then the national competitions respectively. Gull Lake was well represented at both the regional event at WMU and the state level in Bay City, culminating with two GL teams bringing their projects to Maryland. The team of Parker Feraco, Sam Christensen and Sklyer Flietstra presented a group website titled: “The Santa e Trail.” The team of Leo Cooper, Autumn Guffey and Nathan Thorn displayed their website titled “U.S. Encounter and Exchange: The Space Race.” Of the half a million 2016 NHD participants, our GLHS students were the only representative from the state of Michigan to reach the national level in their project areas!

Welcome Gull Lake Middle School Students!

chool doors will be opening for our 2016-2017 school year in less than a month. We are excited to welcome our 6th grade students into the middle school. While the first few days will be spent adjusting to the building and classes, we are confident that our staff and students will help them transition to the middle school life. Parents are encouraged to join us for our Open House on Monday, August 29th beginning at 5:30 PM to learn more about how the staff will help our sixth graders through this very important year.

We are also eager to welcome our returning students to GLMS. With each year of experience, they internalize the valuable traits of respect, ownership, community, kindness, and safety which are critical in their development into leaders. We rely on our returning students to model these traits to their peers.

They never cease to make us proud of the random acts we see throughout the year. Parents are invited to stop in during our 7th and 8th Grade Open House which will take place on Tuesday, August 30 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation, Richland PTO, and the families of Gull Lake’s 2nd grade students, all nine 2nd grade classes (Kellogg and Richland) were able to visit the Kellogg Biological Station’s Agriculture and Ecology Trail this past spring. This trail connects a bowl of Kellogg’s cereal to agriculture and ecology for students to be more familiar with where their food comes from.

Again, thank you to all who helped make this possible including those who gave their time volunteering, Officer Scott for escorting the Kellogg students safely across the street, and finally to the KBS staff.

Community Connector Program Offers New Opportunities for Student Projects The new Community Connector program at Gull Lake Community Schools (GLCS) was started this summer in response to current trends in the career exploration field citing the tremendous value of internships, preapprenticeships, job shadowing, and service learning projects for high school students. Studies show that a vast majority of employers claim that students who participate in high school work-based projects have a competitive advantage when looking for a college internship or full-time job, and also report that those internships most often yield better paying jobs.

The Community Connector program intends to complement the existing set of career and college investigation tools already in place for GLCS students by smoothing the pathway between work and school while also encouraging the appreciation for the value of community citizenship. The school district supports the student in these projects with a program manager who facilitates the project’s activities in cooperation with the employer’s hostmentor. All projects are designed to provide the student with an opportunity to gain practical work experience that integrates his or her academic experience with clearly defined project expectations, learning goals and reflection exercises.

Doug Woodard, who was recently hired as the Early College Assistant, is focusing a large part of his initial activities to identify current employers that currently work with the GLCS District and explore ways that they might be willing to participate in the Community Connector program. As he carries out this work, he would like to talk with anyone in the school district who might be able to identify for profit, non-profit, governmental, political, academic, medical, or any other current community partner who might be interested in hosting a student project.

Gateway Academy

Confession time….I love the Rocky movies….all six! I have loved watching Sylvester Stallone’s character, Rocky Balboa, grow up and mature through all the films: from a brash, uneducated fighter to a respected teacher of boxing. The latest installment of the franchise, Creed, not only had all the great boxing scenes that we’ve come to expect, but there was also the theme of family: not the family that you’re born into but the family you create by forming meaningful relationships.

As Creed so poignantly points out, meaningful relationships are created in an environment that promotes trust, acceptance, honesty, loyalty, and love. As the main character learns that he can’t be successful on his own and needs to be taught from someone who knows and understands where he has come from, he seeks out Rocky. From there the movie evolves into a story of fighting internal and external forces with the two of them joining together to form an unbreakable bond….a bond that brings them together as family.

There are many parallels that can be drawn between the movie and the students who attend Gateway. Firstly, Gateway Academy students enter into a world where they receive training to help them become successful in school and in life.

We offer a small student to teacher ratio, individual instruction, on site counseling, community service opportunities, and so much more.

Secondly, our students form meaningful relationships with staff and other students. These relationships bring us together as a family that supports without judgment. Students enter a safe environment that gives flexibility with people who understand where they have come from.

Finally, the definition of success can change throughout your lifetime. Success to some might be winning inside the boxing ring while to others it can be fighting a disease and giving it everything they’ve got. Gateway measures successes individually: some students increase the amount of credit they earn, which leads to graduation while others focus on making good choices and thinking before they act. Success has many definitions.

As Creed ends we are left with a feeling of hope and that sacrifice plus hard work can make anything possible. At Gateway we are firm believers in giving second (and third) chances and that tomorrow is another day to start fresh.

Our Summer READ and RIDE ROUND-UP Camp was our fourth session of camp for this school year, helping approximately a total of 50 students!

Because of generous private donor and community support this summer, first and second grade students were able to enjoy a week at READ and RIDE ROUND-UP Summer Camp at the CHEFF Center in Augusta!

Again, we say “THANK YOU” to Gull Lake Community Schools, GLCS Foundation, United Way, Instride, GL Community Volunteers, James R. Ryan Family Foundation, Brad Hoorn Endowed Fund, Richland PTO, and all of our sponsors for their support in this unique, innovative approach for helping at-risk readers.

Reading fluency, confidence in oral reading, phonics, and comprehension were practiced and increased during their time at the READ and RIDE ROUND-UP. Horsemanship, grooming their horses, barn chores, and core balance activities were part of their camp time as well. Students enjoyed reading to their “dog friends”, (who listened intently day after day!) and increased in ability with their brain/body exercises daily.

Information on grades, attendance, and courses completed are kept forever unless transferred to another school district.

Portions of a record may be destroyed when it is no longer appropriate to retain them.

DRUG PREVENTION In accordance with federal and state law, the Gull Lake Community Schools Board of Education hereby establishes a “DrugFree School Zone” that extends 1,000 feet from the boundary of any school property.

The Board prohibits the use, possession, concealment, delivery, or property within the Drug-Free School Zone or at any district-related event. Furthermore, the superintendent shall take the necessary steps to ensure that an individual, eighteen (18) years of age or older, who knowingly delivers or distributes controlled substances on designated and prohibited by Michigan statute with the Drug-Free School Zone to another person is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

WEAPONS-FREE SCHOOL ZONE Gull Lake Community Schools is a Weapons-Free School Zone. Violators may face expulsion and/or criminal prosecution.

ANTI-BULLYING/ANTIHARASSMENT: It is the policy of the District to provide a safe educational environment for all students. Bullying, or harassment of a student at school is strictly prohibited. This policy shall be interpreted and enforced to protect all students and to equally prohibit bullying/harassment with regard to its subject matter or motivating animus. 6th Grade Band Meeting

A quick reminder to all upcoming 2016-17 6th grade band parents and students….

On Monday, August 22 at 7 pm

in the Gull Lake Middle School Cafeteria, we will be having a brief orientation regarding the band program. In addition, I have invited representatives from Meyer Music in Kalamazoo to bring instruments with them so families can begin the rent-to-own process and walk out of the meeting with an instrument. If your family already owns an instrument, please bring it along so it can be checked to make sure it is in proper working order before school begins. You can also get your band book at that time and any additional supplies that might be needed. Finally, all of your beginning of the year band papers will be handed out as well so you can get a head start on your school year.

I am so looking forward to seeing everyone at this meeting and having the opportunity to meet all of the parents and students of the class of 2023 Gull Lake Band Members.

BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETINGS

Parents and all other community members are encouraged to attend school board meetings on a regular basis. Meetings are held on the third Monday of every month at the Thomas M. Ryan Intermediate School Media Center at 7:00 pm, unless otherwise indicated. Upon request to the Superintendent, the District shall make reasonable accommodation for a person with disabilities to be able to participate in the meetings. Official minutes of each school board meeting are available for public inspection at the Superintendent’s office, 11775 East D Avenue, Richland, MI 49083, or may be accessed on the school website: www.gulllakecs.org.

HS Student Drop Off By Don Eastman – HS Principal – deastman@gulllakecs.org In order to promote a safer drop-off and pick-up for high school students, a new area is being created to eliminate congestion in the circle drive, which is designated for emergency vehicles. This new area will be clearly labeled and easily identified.

Beginning the 2016-2017 school year. Please only use the front circle lot to drop off your student and continue on. If you must park and wait, please use the newly labeled student drop off lot or the main parking lot.
