SELF DEFENSE KICKBOXING

SUMMER FENCING - COMPETITIVE

Sijo James Smith teaches this self-defense class. It is based on the premise of kickboxing to help the average person learn how to punch and kick correctly. Then it builds by putting together simple combinations. It is a workout because there are repetitive punching and kicking combinations, but it also makes you aware of your actions and others.

Project Updates BATTLEGROUND GOLF COURSE BULKHEAD REPAIRS The Department is working on repairs on one of the Bulkheads at the Battleground Golf Course on Holes #14. The Parks and Recreation Department has received three bids that will include addition of Vinyl Bulkheads to assist in preventing erosion and losing greens adjacent to water areas. The Department is in the process of awarding a bid for the Project in FY 20-21. Project re-budgeted for FY 21-22. The City has awarded a bid to Texas Bulkhead Construction LLC. The plan is begin construction on this project in the early April. Funding Source: Golf Course Lease Fund

TENNIS COURT FENCE REPLACEMENT The City of Deer Park Parks and Recreation Department routinely inspects fences at PARD facilities as part of an annual fence replacement program. The Department has identified the Dow Park Tennis Courts perimeter fence as needing repairs and replacement. The scope of work would include the removal of the old chain link fence, installation of a new 10’ chain link fence, and new windscreens. The City has received a purchasing cooperative quote from Foster Fence to complete the purchase and installation for the new fence around the Dow Park Tennis Courts. Work is scheduled to be completed on this project by mid-summer. Funding Source: FY 21-22 City of Deer Park Parks and Recreation Capital Outlay

COMMUNITY CENTER AND RECREATION CENTER The renovation and expansion of the Community Center to include an indoor pool was one of the original Type B projects in 2015. However, after in-depth consideration, the conclusion was made that permanent repairs to the existing Community Center, including the addition of an indoor therapy pool, would exceed $6 million. Since July 2018, City staff, City Council, the Deer Park Community Development Corporation (DPCDC), and the Parks and Recreation Commission have seriously contemplated replacement versus repair of the existing structure. On May 1, 2021, Deer Park voters authorized the Type B sales and use tax to be continued and authorized additional uses of the tax to include the new Community/ Recreation Center Complex. In June 2021, City staff approved a contract with Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects for the design of the new Community/Recreation Center. The proposed Community/Recreation Center complex consists of 3 new buildings, each located on the north side of Dow Park. The Community Center, to be constructed next to City Hall, is intended to house the activity, program, and meeting rooms, as well as staff offices. The Recreation Center is intended to house the gymnasium, indoor walking track, and indoor pool, which is to be built on the site of the current Community Center and Gymnasium after demolition of the existing buildings. The new outdoor swimming pool bathhouse will replace the existing structure. Anticipated timeline for construction of the new Community/Recreation Center Complex is approximately 44 months. The estimated cost is approximately $42.6 million. Cost estimates include all professional services, such as architectural, engineering, geotechnical, surveying, as well as construction and the furniture and equipment for the facilities. City staff initiated a two-step process for selecting a Construction Manager-at-Risk (CMAR) for the project. Step 1 involved the issuance of a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for companies to serve as the CMAR. After receipt, review, and scoring of the Statements of Qualifications (SOQs), a short list of the top scoring 5 firms was developed. In December 2021, City Council authorized Step 2 of the selection process, the issuance of a Request for Proposals (RFP) to the top 5 respondents. Proposals were received on January 19 and will go through a process of review, interviews, and presentations by the companies, as well as scoring and ranking of proposals. The City of Deer Park introduced the selected Construction Manager at Risk firm, Durotech, at the April 5th Joint City Council meeting. Durotech has a long history of projects within the Houston area as well as completing multiple project for Deer Park ISD. The City of Deer Park will not work with Durotech and Brinkley Sargent Wiginton to begin reviewing and rising construction plans. Additionally, work will continue to insure that the project is within the specified budget capacity for the project. The City will work with these two partners to provide a the best quality of life value for the community with the funds allotted. Funding Source: 2021 Type B Bond Election

BATTLEGROUND GOLF COURSE CLUB HOUSE ROOF REPLACEMENT

NATURE PRESERVE BOARDWALK EXPANSION

The City of Deer Park Parks and Recreation Department is working with a vendor to complete repairs to the Battleground Golf Course club house roof. The project would consist of removing the existing clay tile roof, water proofing, and replacement of clay tiles.

The City of Deer Park Parks and Recreation Department has recently expanded and extended the boardwalk at the Deer Park Nature Preserve. The project included adding linear footage to the existing boardwalk as well as making repairs to the existing trail.
