These isolation products — spring, elastomeric and wire rope isolators — provide custom solutions for industrial OEM markets. We operate an onsite engineering test lab with rapid prototype molding capabilities. These capabilities allow us to accelerate the design through first article inspection process. VMC Group’s wire rope isolators resolve shock and vibration issues in virtually any application. An elastic element wire rope isolator affords attenuation of vibration disturbances. When a shock load is applied, the mount softens and deforms. This displacement reduces the acceleration level through the controlled buckling of the wire rope loops.

MILITARY/AEROSPACE OEMs VMC Group encompasses two of the most recognized and respected brands in the Military/Aerospace industries - Korfund Dynamics spring and elastomeric isolators and Aeroflex International wire rope isolators. For decades, we have provided engineered solutions specific to the requirements of these demanding industries. We are one of only a handful of suppliers who provide both of these product types globally.

As technology has evolved over the years for aerospace, and military equipment and ordinances have become more stringent, the transportation of critical machinery has become a significant challenge. More sophisticated and intelligent systems, coupled with the necessity to minimize costs, have resulted in equipment being built structurally lighter, with increasingly sensitive electronic systems. These trends have driven the need for shock and vibration isolation to be built into the platform of the equipment. Traditionally isolation and shock systems were built to protect the foundations and structures where the equipment operated. Now, the transportation of the equipment and the over-the-road forces they are subject to, have driven and led to the mandate that shock and vibration isolators be used during transportation.

As we entered the 21st century, even missiles became more susceptible to over the road vibration and shock.

For example, missile guidance systems are electronically driven and are no longer in a steel casing with contained explosives. They are highly sophisticated and require extreme sensitivity during transport.

ROPE ISOLATORS A rebound from a compressive shock; back down the compression curve and snubbing into the tension curve is usually not a problem.

By their nature, wire rope isolators are self-snubbing, fail-safe and captive to the ultimate limits of the metals.

They are insensitive to temperature from cryogenic up to near anneal. They resist most industrial and natural environments. VMC Group’s manufacturing process is set up to create special winding configurations to customize spring rate and deflection.

VMC Group presents tables of isolator recommendations based on type of application and applied static weight per isolator. The indicated isolator is a convenient starting point when performing selection analysis.

The tables referenced are not a substitute for proper analysis of system requirements. The key elements to performing a meaningful selection and analysis are: • Payload weight, geometry, center of gravity, isolator location • Dynamic input (shock spectrum, vibration amplitude and frequency) • The level to which shock and vibration should be attenuated Payload geometry and center of gravity are important particularly to determining induced rocking. If a shock input is defined in terms of pulse peak (g’s) it is necessary to also specify pulse shape and duration, i.e. 30 g’s, 11-millisecond half sine. A half sine pulse shape is the most common one found in specifications. Shock can also be in terms of a drop distance combined with a drop mode, i.e. vertical flat drop, edge drop, elastic or inelastic. The most common drop specified is the inelastic vertical flat drop. Vibration can be expressed as a cyclic amplitude (acceleration or distance) or varying amplitude, over a defined frequency band. It could be a single disturbing frequency, or it can be specified in terms of power spectral density (PSD). The latter is a means to characterize random vibration and is popular in military and space applications.

From this information, we can determine the percentage of energy attenuation for various frequencies above the natural frequency. Sometimes the customer’s desired output is the most difficult part to ascertain. Many equipment manufacturers will not provide the maximum acceleration and vibration levels that their products can tolerate. When they do provide data, it may be incomplete or extremely conservative. Quite often, we size the isolation system to do the best job within reasonable size constraints. Any theoretical isolator selection must be reconsidered in light of real world limitations on equipment sway space and the isolator’s physical size and stability.

Some very simple equations are used in selecting wire rope isolators. When considering shock we use an energy method. We reduce a shock pulse to an equivalent velocity step. For a few typical shock inputs, the velocity steps are as follows:

The transmission of shock and vibration can be looked at as an input and output through a box. Within the box, we may or may not modify the input to obtain the output.

Given an input, and in order to define the box so it is not a “black box”, we must determine what the customer’s desired output is. Shock output, or response, is usually in terms of the peak acceleration that can be tolerated.

This can also be called the equipment’s fragility. Vibration output is usually expressed as the suspension’s natural frequency, or filtering point.

Here again, VMC Group cautions the designer. The published vibration spring rates are average and subject to actual dynamic conditions. Vibration attenuation efficiency for a given input frequency can be determined from either the classical transmissibility equation for first order systems or its graphical representation.

Particularly with wire rope isolators, a robust system should be designed such that variances in the effective natural frequency due to dynamic damping do not significantly alter performance in the desired band.

In other words, allow a good margin between the calculated suspension natural frequencies and input frequencies that are to be attenuated. A 3/1 or 4/1 ratio of input frequency to suspension frequency is sufficient in most cases to avoid an unwanted amplification condition.

Aeroflex, the former parent company of Vibration Mountings and Controls, which was acquired in 2005

by VMC Group, pioneered the wire rope isolator more than fifty years ago. Steel wire rope is strong, flexible and fatigue-resistant because it is made up of many individual strands of high-tensile strength drawn wire. When bent or buckled, it is as much an elastic element as any tempered coil spring or elastomeric mount. Due to frictional forces between the individual strands, wire rope can provide a significant level of dynamic damping; typically 15% to 20% of critical damping. This level of damping makes wire rope isolators attractive for applications that involve sweeps through resonance and transients such as shock.

To create a shock and vibration isolator from wire rope, VMC Group creates buckling elements either in the form of helical loops (Helical Series isolators), or individual arcs (Arch and Circular Arch Series). Like any buckling element, a third-order force deflection curve results. This can also be called a “softening curve”. Graphically, the curve starts from zero and is nearly linear. With increasing load and deflection, a point is reached where the curve begins to flatten. At some further point along the load deflection curve, the curve becomes steeper creating an inherent snubbing effect.

Shock is attenuated by spreading the input energy over time and distance. The flattened section of the curve is excellent for doing this. The load deflection curve of a wire rope is very long given the isolator’s physical size. The isolator is a hollow, slender device capable of collapsing in on itself. For its size, it can deflect far more than elastomer and more than a coil spring. This is not to say that wire rope isolators are strictly shock attenuators and not vibration isolators. As an elastic element in a spring-mass system, it will exhibit a natural frequency and thereby form a low-pass filter for vibration energy in the same manner as any coil spring or elastomeric isolator.

VMC Group does not list load ratings for individual wire rope isolators and we publish two different average spring rates. We have average static load-deflection curves available in both hard copy and electronic form for the principal isolator directions. They are always available on request. We have also chosen not to include load deflection curves for wire rope isolators and encourage you to obtain assistance from VMC Group’s Engineering Services Division at 1-800-569-8423. In almost all cases, applications assistance, including analysis and modeling, is performed free of charge and without obligation to the customer.

In order to determine how much load can be placed on a wire rope isolator, we must first ask what the customer intends to do with the isolator. If small amplitude vibration is the input, we can place the static load along much of the lower two thirds of a typical load deflection curve.

The effective static spring rate is the tangent of the curve at that load point. If large amplitudes, particularly deep shocks are to be the input, we place the static load down in the linear first third of the curve. This allows the load to ride high up onto the curve in response to the shock.

In this case, the effective average spring rate is a global straight-line end-to-end slope of the curve over the excursion.

To provide average values in the catalog for design purposes, we take the vibration spring rate as the tangent slope near zero and the shock spring rate as the overall end-to-end straight-line slope over the curve. VMC Group’s modeling software takes the entire third-order curve into account. The non-linear nature of the response curve and the presence of input-dependent damping are good reasons to work with our engineering department when selecting an isolator.

Another characteristic of wire rope isolators that is reason for the user to consult with VMC Group before making a selection is the interrelationship between the axes of the isolator. Wire rope isolators are elastic elements in all directions simultaneously. This makes them suited for all-attitude and mobile applications and applications that involve complex, off-axis inputs. The physics of the isolator is such that most inputs produce a response with components in more than one direction.

We can manage this characteristic using properly engineered solutions that take all axes into account. It should be noted as a caveat to the all-axes elasticity claim that use of the tension direction for primary shock attenuation is not recommended. This is due to the predominance of tensile loading within the cable that results in a stiffening curve.

ISOLATORS In its simplest form, an elastomeric isolator is a block of material that will deflect under an applied load. Elastomeric isolators include many elastomer, plastic and composite materials. In one form or another, VMC Group offers all of these. VMC Group’s line of molded isolators are manufactured from both synthetic and natural elastomers. They may or may not have metal inserts molded into them to provide isolating interfaces and to control elastic response and stresses.

From a theoretical point of view, we can select an isolator by first considering the frequency of the input to be attenuated. This is usually the lowest frequency, or at least the lowest frequency with amplitude of any consequence. Like any resilient isolator system, we have a dynamic input, a desired output, and a box between them that modifies the input to the output. The critical factors necessary to determine the character of the system are the supported mass, its approximate center of gravity and its geometry. These will enable us to determine the static load on each isolator. Some types of equipment impose an additional reaction load against their isolators.

Elastically supported engines and motors that drive against something that is not on the same elastic suspension are of particular interest. A good example of this is a vehicle engine and transmission that drives against the vehicle’s axle and wheels. Some equipment may exhibit a violent shudder upon start-up and shutdown. Inertial reactions of equipment that accelerate and decelerate quickly may also have to be considered.

Applied loads that occur infrequently can be given different consideration than steady state loads and repetitive loads when selecting an isolator based on strength.

Given the great variety of isolators that VMC Group offers, this could prove to be a confusing task. A simpler approach to selection may be rooted less in mathematics. VMC’s elastomeric isolator product line can be divided along several functional lines.

TECH NOTES

The decision whether to use a flush mounted isolator has much to do with the user’s thoughts on the installation method and surrounding structures. Flush mounted isolators put less demands on the design of the supporting structures. Usually a reasonable flat surface and two simple through or tapped holes are all that is required. Sinking the isolator into the surface of the supporting structure may not only save on installed height but also places side loads into the plane of the support. This limits local bending stresses. Isolators that are not flush require features in the supporting structure. In particular, the RB, Ring and Bushing Series depend on the isolation hole and plate geometry to achieve their rated characteristics.

The decision whether to use a fail-safe or captive isolator is dictated by the end item’s usage. Generally, mobile equipment should be captive. A payload in motion is subject to side thrusts and uplifts even if the primary load is in compression. Despite all best efforts, something that is mobile or transportable may be turned on its side or upside down. When it comes to ultimate strength, elastomers cannot match metals. For this reason, we do not rely on elastomers alone to keep a payload from becoming a secondary projectile. Requirements imposed by code such as for earthquake (seismic) resistance and wind loads necessitate captive, failsafe isolators which have interlocking metal components.

Beyond this, specific load-bearing capacity may have to be established to meet job requirements. Failsafe does not imply indestructible. If a specific load requirement exists, or if failure of the metal members may result in a hazard, VMC Group should be consulted. An all-attitude isolator functions as a resilient member in all directions.

The elastic properties in each direction may differ. An all-attitude isolator is captive. Not all captive isolators are all-attitude. All of VMC’s captive isolators are all-attitude to some extent.

With the field of possible isolators narrowed based on installation preference and function, we can now turn our attention to selecting based on applied load. The numbers that VMC Group publishes are load ratings.

They are not ultimate loads to failure and they are not necessarily recommended loads. The nominal suspension natural frequency that we publish in the catalog will be achieved when a mass which applies the rated load is supported on the isolator. In most cases, increasing this load slightly should not be a problem but will result in a slightly lower natural frequency. VMC Group should be consulted when increasing load much over the rated load is being considered. Applying lighter loads will result in a higher suspension natural frequency. The higher natural frequency, or stiffer, suspension may provide less attenuation of lower frequency disturbances. In a worst case, it may approach or coincide with a higher disturbing frequency and result in amplification. For this reason, we like to look at the suspension natural frequency and disturbing frequencies and not simply load ratings. The presence of shocks, transient reaction loads and large amplitude inputs may be good reason for backing down from the rated load to add margin.

For most industrial applications, we look to molded elastomeric isolators to provide suspensions between 8 Hz and 35 Hz. Depending on the specifics of the application, we may require only minimal resistance to side loads or complete elastic suspension in all directions.

Our catalog details off-axis capability or stiffness ratio in some cases. Various axial to radial stiffness ratios can be achieved with a variety of isolators, from 1:5, through 1:1 to 5:1 and beyond. Where there is a question on off-axis characteristics, VMC Group should be consulted.

Silicone

The usage environment dictates the type of elastomer that should be specified. VMC’s standard products are listed in usually one but sometimes two “standard” materials. To meet specifics of temperature, extreme strength, enhanced damping, chemical resistance and resistance to ozone and sunlight we can provide many other materials. With few exceptions, we can mold any isolator in our product line in any material that can be molded. Our manufacturing process is set up so that we can produce short run specials sometimes at the same cost, or with a very slight premium. VMC Group should be consulted whenever environment is suspected to be an issue. We offer here some guidelines to our most commonly used materials.

Similar to our color-coded neoprene and blended materials, it offers the same color-coding to indicate load rating. Upper limit on service temperature is extended to +250°F and has greater resistance to sunlight (UV) ozone, salt water and acids. For this reason it may be preferred when extreme outdoor conditions are encountered such as on exposed rooftops in some locations.

BB Durulene™ Is a family of tough, durable elastomeric compounds that are formulated to perform identical to the traditional neoprene and neoprene blend compounds, but with higher service temperature capability, to 250°F, and low temperature flexibility, to -65°F. Their excellent resistance to UV light, ozone and salt spray, make these a good sele ction for outdoor use as well as standard industrial uses.

Neoprene and Neoprene Blends Good general purpose black-elastomer for sustained operating temperatures between -40° and +180°F. Resistant to splashes of most oils and hydraulic fluid and other conditions typical of industrial and engine compartment environments. Our standard material for most industrial isolators.

Provides an increased operating temperature range of -60° to +300°F. Inherently resistant to many chemicals, with the exception of lubricating oil. Low outgassing.

For this reason it is favored for military and space applications. Overall, silicone provides greater dynamic damping than many other materials. It also can be color-coded to indicate load capacity.

VMC Weather-resistant (WR) Durulene™ Blended Material

Nitrile Generally a good substitute for our neoprene blended and color-coded materials when significant exposure to oils and hydraulic fluids are present.

EPDM A good substitute for our neoprene blended and colorcoded materials when extended temperature range, improved chemical resistance or low-temperature flexibility is needed.

VMC Extreme High Temperature Silicone Capable of continuous operation to +485° F.

VMC High Damped Silicone Capable of producing isolators with dynamic damping factors approaching 25% of critical depending on type of input.

Elastomeric isolators will inherently provide some degree of dynamic damping. Damping limits response peaks when a machine momentarily passes through resonance such as during start-up. It limits ringing due to shocks and transients. Damping is a property of the material and also affected by the character of the dynamic input. It is velocity dependent so high frequency, large displacement inputs will result in proportionally the greatest damping out of a given material. Damping operates by drawing energy out of the system in the form of heat. Damped isolators will warm with operation.

In the extreme case, heavily damped isolators operated for extended periods of time under severe conditions or near resonance will overheat. This will shorten the isolator’s overall service life.

The level of damping should be appropriate to the application. Above all else, isolators should not be operated in a resonance condition for extended periods of time. In most industrial applications, the moderate amount of damping provided by our standard materials combined with operation well above suspension resonance will provide excellent performance and service life.

TECH NOTES

Certain military applications necessitate high damping materials in order to control broad-spectrum random vibration and shock. The use of high damping material must be combined with good engineering analysis and testing particularly when the suspension natural frequency must reside within a narrow band. Damping makes the isolator appear stiffer dynamically.

VMC Group CM Series Encapsulated Elastomeric or Silicone Cup Isolators provide superior shock and vibration isolation for a variety of applications, environments and mounting configurations. These isolators are ideal for use in very low load applications where portability and accessibility are required such as with avionics, camera systems, engine controls, weapons systems and communications equipment.

The CM Series Cup Isolators offer a low profile, lightweight, all-attitude design for flexible installation in numerous locations. VMC Group LD Series High Deflection Mid-Frequency Isolators provide both shock and vibration protection for a variety of applications. These isolators can attenuate a 15.0 g, 11-millisecond shock to 10.0 g; and a 30.0 g, 11-millisecond shock to 16.0 g. The LD Series Isolators are ideal for use in applications where vibration and shock are a concern such as avionics, camera systems, engine controls, communications equipment and weapons systems.

Two different elastomeric element types are available in The LD Series. The standard elastomer that offers an operating temperature of -20˚F to +180˚F provides effective isolation in most applications. The optional polybutadiene version is used for situations when operating temperatures may drop as low as -65˚F. Both versions are excellent when high amplitude vibration inputs are expected or large shock deflections are needed. Both versions also resist oils, ozone and most solvents — providing optimum resilience in difficult conditions.

No special tools are required for installation. The central isolators are not inherently failsafe. These isolated systems do require a suitable means of restraint.

RSM Series Isolators

VMC Group RSM Series Isolators are fully bonded, failsafe elastomeric isolators designed to provide shock and vibration isolation for a variety of marine applications in the medium to heavy load range. Offered in two designs — the RSM1 Series offers low load ranges and the RSM3 Series offers load ranges up to 1,300 lbs.

The RSM Series also are furnished as a complete assembly for simple ordering and installation. The isolator is manufactured of a ductile iron outer housing for failsafe or heavy-duty applications. The series provides an extremely durable construction that includes zinc-plated, carbon steel hardware and corrosion resistant coating on all metal surfaces.

SB Series Elastomeric Vibration Isolators

VMC Group SB Series Elastomeric Vibration Isolators come with built-in snubbing. These isolators are ideal for use in low load applications such as propulsion, guidance, radar, sonar and other sensitive marine systems where portability and accessibility is a concern.

SB Series Isolators are provided in two halves with one snubbing washer for simple installation in the field. The failsafe snubbing design prevents the isolation elements from coming in contact with the housing. There is no metal-to-metal contact. For additional isolation where heavy downward weights occur, we also offer the CSB Isolator. This isolator consists of one-half SB and another half that is an elastomeric snubbing ring backed by a steel snubbing plate.

At maximum load, the natural frequency of 12 Hz offers excellent equipment isolation. The SB Series are also furnished with a bonded center tube and wear plates.

No chamfer or radius is required on the installation hole.

The structural sections are made of carbon steel. The snubbing washer is zinc-plated carbon steel. All metal surfaces have a corrosion resistant coating for superior strength and longevity.
