Overview

Overview The signage and wayfinding systems detailed in this guide have been designed to be immediately interpretable, universally accessible and immensely future proof, all while being representative and compliant with the AkzoNobel brand.

All aspects of the design have been considered and created to ensure the objectives have been met and maintained. Deviating from any of the established guidelines can result in a reduction of these values, potentially rendering signage less effective, or at worse, unsafe.

This guide will provide the basic amount of information necessary for the future creation of internal and external site signage.

Brand compliance

Brand compliance The AkzoNobel brand has been created to accurately represent the mission and values of the company.

It is the primary point of contact between the public and AkzoNobel, and so it is essential that it extends to as many systems as possible, including signage.

We have achieved this by employing Helvetica Neue, the primary brand typeface, and by complying with the predetermined AkzoNobel colour palette.

Typography Helvetica Neue has been chosen for the Ashington Site signage because of its high levels of readability and legibility, and its compliance with AkzoNobel brand guidelines.

Helvetica Neue Bold is to be used for all primary information, with Helvetica Neue being used for any secondary information.

If there is only primary information to be displayed, use Helvetica Neue Bold.

If Helvetica is unavailable, Arial can be used temporarily until it is.

Note that Italics should not usually be used in signage.

Typography

Typography Type is to be aligned to the left on all signage. This ensures maximum levels of readability by creating a consistent and well recognised starting point for the eye.

Type aligned to the centre or to the right is not appropriate and cannot be used in most circumstances.

Leading (or line spacing; the space between lines of type) can have significant effects on the legibility of the sign’s information. Leading is always slightly larger than the type size, so if the type is 250pt, 251pt leading would be suitable.

Colour system The signage colour palette has been chosen for its optimal visuals, high levels of contrast and compliance with the brand guidelines.

Signage Blue will be used for the majority of internal and external signage, with Signage Red being applied only to signs with critically important information being displayed.

Red renders type less readable than blue does, but it also draws attention much more effectively than blue.

Colour System

Colour system Usage scenarios are presented here to clarify when Signage Blue and Signage Red should be used.

Red should only be used on signage which demands immediate and critical attention, such as displaying information which could result in danger if not followed.

Blue should be used for all standard information signage, and particularly on directional signage.

Blue should always be used as a background for signs which display location names. This helps to create a visual hierarchy which immediately draws attention to the most important information.
