In August 2014 Maria Lucia Cattani began what would be her final wall drawing.

Measuring approximately 220 x 220 cm, the work demanded considerable effort and determination. Diagnosed with brain tumor some ten months previously, she had soon lost much control of her drawing hand and finally began to draw from her wheelchair using the other hand, directly onto a wall.

Em agosto de 2014 Maria Lucia Cattani iniciou o que seria seu úlmo trabalho de parede. Medindo aproximadamente 220 x 220 cm, a tarefa lhe exigiu considerável esforço e determinação. Diagnoscada com câncer cerebral dez meses antes, ela havia perdido o controle de sua mão direita, mas iniciou este trabalho em uma cadeira de rodas usando a mão esquerda para desenhar diretamente sobre uma parede.

Em agosto de 2014 Maria Lucia Cattani começou o que seria seu último trabalho de parede. Medindo aproximadamente 220 x 220 cm, o trabalho demandou considerável esforço e determinação. Nesta época, o tumor cerebral diagnosticado dez meses antes já havia lhe trazido severas deficiências. Meses de tratamento tiveram como consequência a interrupção de uma prática criativa de mais de 40 anos. Depois de ser incentivada, ela finalmente começou a desenhar usando apenas a mão esquerda com um marcador à base d’água, sentada em sua cadeira de rodas, e trabalhando diretamente em uma parede da casa que havia sido construída quinze anos antes. Eu imaginei que seria um desenho horizontal, que poderia cobrir a parede em um nível acessível a partir da cadeira, que foi a forma como o trabalho começou. Mas logo ela insistiu em cobrir toda a parede, de cima para baixo. As partes inferiores poderia ser alcançadas esticando-se para baixo, mas os níveis mais elevados do desenho exigiam que ela sentasse em uma cadeira sobre uma mesa. Durante um período de cerca de cinco semanas, durante o qual a sua saúde continuou a se deteriorar, este desenho cresceu para proporcionar uma sensação de alegria e vida, tanto para Maria Lucia quanto para quem teve o privilégio de vê-lo. In August 2014 Maria Lucia Cattani began what would be her final wall drawing.

Measuring approximately 220 x 220 cm, the work demanded considerable effort and determination. The brain tumour diagnosed some ten months previously had soon deprived her of use of her drawing hand. Months of treatment and deterioration meant that she had almost stopped any form of the creative practice to which she had been committed for 40 years. After a little encouragement she finally began to draw from her wheelchair using a water-based marker in her other hand, directly onto a wall in the house we had built fifteen years before. I imagined that this would be a horizontal drawing that might cover the wall from a level reachable from her chair, which is how the work began. But she soon insisted that she would cover the entire wall from top to bottom. The lower parts could be reached by stretching downwards, but the higher levels of the drawing required her to sit on a chair on top of a table. Over a period of about five weeks, during which her health continued to deteriorate, this drawing grew to provide a sense of joy and life both for Maria Lucia herself and for anyone else privileged to see it. Uma parede, que separa, como um limite e um fim. A parede tem para si o ideal de imobilidade. Você não pode arrastar, se não derrubar. Murais e paredes estabelecem uma relação de conflito. Um está preso ao outro em uma adesivagem ambivalente, fruto de um desejo oculto. A essência da parede é permanência, o mural, ao parasitar-se, almeja uma certa eternidade.

A wall, a division, a limit and an end. The ideal of the wall itself is immobility.

You cannot move it without knocking it down. Murals and walls set up a state of conflict. One is attached to the other in ambivalent adhesion, the fruit of hidden desire. The essence of the wall is permanence; the mural attached to it craves a degree of eternity.

A última parede de Maria Lucia foi resultado de persistência, garra, doçura e delicadeza – características comuns a toda sua vida e obra e que a seguiram até os últimos momentos, adaptado-se ao possível e dentro de suas limitações físicas: um testamento da sua paixão pela arte e pela vida.

Maria Lucia’s final wall was the result of persistence and determination, delight and delicacy – characteristics of her whole life and work which she retained until the end and adapted to what was possible within her physical limitations: a testament to her passion for art and life.

Maria Lucia Cattani iniciou seus trabalhos em paredes na metade da década de 1990. Na Reading University ela imprimiu diretamente sobre as paredes usando blocos de madeira cortados à mão e carimbos de borracha. Venetian Red Chinese Orange é uma parede impressa com blocos, com outra versão em papel, medindo 350 x 350 cm. Em Por volta do branco, apresentado em 1999 no Torreão, em Porto Alegre, todas as paredes de uma sala de 4 x 4 m foram pintadas com blocos de borracha de 3 x 3 cm. Para a Bienal do Mercosul de 2005, e em Berlim em 2006, ela fez obras de parede que envolveram tanto impressões quanto incisões diretamente nas superfícies das paredes. 2 lados / 2 sides, de 2008, foi um livro de artista que utilizou corte à laser como estêncil, que serviu de base para trabalhos em Londres, Porto Alegre e Providence, R.I., EUA. Comum a todas estas obras é o gesto da artista entalhando os blocos ou imprimindo e fazendo incisões diretamente sobre a parede, em um processo extremamente trabalhoso e demorado para produzir obras in situ.

Maria Lucia nasceu em 13 de julho de 1958 em Garibaldi/RS, Brasil, e faleceu em 6 de fevereiro de 2015 em Porto Alegre/RS, Brasil. Cursou o Instituto de Artes da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brasil.

Complementou seus estudos no Pratt Institute, New York, USA; na Reading University e na University of the Arts London, UK. Foi professora do Instituto de Artes de 1985 até 2014, quando aposentou-se. Participou regularmente de exposições a partir dos anos 1980 até 2014. Seus trabalhos estão em coleções públicas e privadas no Brasil e exterior.

Maria Lucia Cattani began producing wall works in the mid 1990s. At Reading University she printed directly onto walls using hand-cut wood blocks and rubber stamps. Venetian Red Chinese Orange was a block printed wall with another version on paper, each measuring 350 x 350 cm. At TorreĂŁo in Porto Alegre in 1999, Por volta do Branco involved printing the entire walls of a 4m x 4m room with a rubber block measuring 3 x 3 cm. For the Mercosul Biennial in 2005 and in Berlin in 2006 she made wall works which involved both block printing and direct carving into the wall surface. In 2008, 2 lados / 2 sides was a laser-cut bookwork which became the stencil for a wall work in London, Porto Alegre and Providence, R.I., USA Common to all these works are the direct gesture of the artist, carving the blocks or printing and cutting into the wall, and an extremely laborious and timeconsuming process of producing the work in situ.

Maria Lucia was born on June 13, 1958 in Garibaldi, RS, Brazil and died on February 6, 2015 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. She studied Fine Art at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil; Pratt Institute, New York, USA; Reading University, and University of the Arts London, UK. She taught at UFRGS from 1985 until 2014. She exhibited regularly from the 1980s until 2014 and her work is in major public and private collections in Brazil and abroad.

Contribuições | Contributions Airton Cattani é irmão de Maria Lucia e professor do Curso de Design da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Seu livro Poema das quatro palavras (Marcavisual, 2015) – transcrito aqui em uma única pagina – foi realizado em homenagem à memória de Maria Lucia e recebeu o Prêmio Açorianos 2015 de melhor projeto gráfico.

Jane Bryce é autora, critica literária e amiga de Maria Lucia. Ela a visitou em dezembro de 2014, poucas semanas depois da conclusão da última parede e escreveu o poema em janeiro de 2015.

Carlos Gallo é galerista. Ele trabalhou com Maria Lucia durante muitos anos, tendo passado bastante tempo com ela nos seus últimos meses.

Maristela Salvatori é gravadora, professora no Instituto de Artes da UFRGS, colega e grande amiga de Maria Lucia.

Nick Rands é artista plástico. Casou-se com Maria Lucia em 1994.

Airton Cattani is one of Maria Lucia’s brothers and teaches graphic design at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. His Poema das quatro palavras (Marcavisual, 2015), made in homage to Maria Lucia, exploits two different meanings of the Portuguese word parte, as ‘a part‘ and ‘to part’, to convey different senses of loss. As a bookwork, it was awarded the Açorianos Prize in 2015 for best graphic design.

Jane Bryce is a writer and critic and friend of Maria Lucia. She visited in December 2014, a few weeks after completion of the wall drawing and wrote the poem in January 2015.

Garlos Gallo is an art dealer. He worked with Maria Lucia for many years and spent considerable time with her during the final months.

Maristela Salvatori is a printmaker and teachers at UFRGS Instituto de Artes. She was a colleague and close friend of Maria Lucia for many years.

Nick Rands is a visual artist. He married Maria Lucia in 1994.
