CONCEPT We are looking to give Margaret Morrison an identity to the rest of campus that reflects the work produced within the building. This is accomplished by enhancing the features of the classical Hornbostel architecture, while adding a modern interpretation of the Rotunda space.

precedent study

precedent study: crown this example highlights an architectural feature very similar to the case of margaret morrison carnegie hall. the single strip of intense light draws emphasis to the datum at the top of the building.

this example demonstrates the dramatic capability of lighting the topmost structure of a building. the direct contrast between the blue-lit background and the amber uplighting creates a beautiful composition of a crown.

this example serves as historical precedent of prominent architecture being lit in a “crown situation. many skyscrapers in new york serve as identifiers and landmarks of the cityscape.

a more recent update to a historic precedent, this is the empire state building receiving a newer, more updated method of lighting the highest structure. even today, lighting the topmost structure is commonly used to highlight and distinguish buildings.

precedent study: column this example highlights the dramatic quality of low-intensity lighting at the base of a column. it serves as a precedent of how the columns were to be lit from the exterior.

this example shows the effect of contrasting the low-intensity columns with a different color temperature crown lighting situation.

this is a strong precedent of lighting a column from the base where the upper ornamentation is highlighted and the shadows cast are made even more beautiful. the negative aspect of this lighting is the blindingly intense hot spot on the column shaft.

a good representation of how a change in color temperature can create a completely different composition on the column.

precedent study: niche this precedent exemplifies the way that uplighting can exagerrate a curved surface and create a dynamic lighting situation.

the example shown to the left is an amazing demonstration of transforming architecture that is historically bare and empty at night but then becomes a beacon to those that see it.

this is a good example of how lighting the niche space does not dramatically change the interior zone, thus differentiating between interior and exterior without blending the two.

a strong representation of how one can isolate the upper portion of a niche zone and create an even stronger contrast between the dynamic, curved ceiling and the solid vertical walls.

precedent study: entrance this precedent highlights the dramatic method of sequential vertical lighting that can take place given a gradient and a grand enough entrance. this inspired us to draw the lighting of the rotunda on the main door.

this example highlights the true isolation that can be achieved when uplighting the entrance and utiliizing the curved entrance sequence to reinforce the concept described above.

this is an example of using a sequence of lighting to create a focus or draw the eye to the center using different color temperatures.

this is a broader precedent of having the interior zone of the rotunda be lit differently than the exterior zone where the interior floods out into the outside space.
