TYPOLOGY: Bushfire Memorial Museum
LOCATION: Binna Burra, QLD
YEAR: Third Year Bachelor of Architectural Design 2024
PROGRAMS USED: ArchiCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign
The tragedy of the Black Summer Bush Fires highlights the fragile nature of the Binna Burra community where this Memorial Museum will be a transcendence of memories, allowing the collective grieving experience of the people and the land to commence. Utilizing the Dual Process Model of Grief proposed by Stroebe and Strut, this proposal will embody the oscillation between two realities. The community will learn to navigate dysfunction through confronting the void, known as loss-oriented proccessing and re-imagining existence knwn as restoration-oriented processing. This duality mirrors the human condition as the communty grapple with existential questions aiming to balance despair and hope. As visitors traverse through the memorial museum, they will meander through a symbolic narrative - arrival, aftermath, alleviaion, ascendance - mirroring the journey of the human spirit as they overcome devastation. Confronting the void becomes and invitation to re-imagine existence.

The Women’s Transitional Facility, shaping the future women of our society, aiding them through rehabilitation slowly reintegrated these female residents back into society. Through the analysis of Kevin Lynch’s theory of city systems, specific design choices through the notion of edges, districts, pathways, nodes and landmarks will have an overall influence on the way these women engage and navigate their time within the facility. With a key focus on edges and pathways , with influence through the surrounding, this massing proposal suggests the impact different edge treatments have on carving out certain pathways within the facility, dictating autonomous decision making while promoting ideologies of self-motivation, awareness and discipline. The result of these carefully considered pathways provide women room for movement and growth where they are guided from district to district, navigating thresholds and shifts in different conditions seen through the urban and environmental context. With influence from Stan Allen’s research regarding Infrastructural Urbanism, adaptions are made to the current ecological context where programs are connected through strategically designed pieces of infrastructure. Overall, this adaption will depict a seamless blend between the natural and built environment, establishing networks for future movement, navigation, communication and connection between society to take place. This massing proposal draws on connection to country, determining initial patterns of land use and navigation of tracks made by indigenous people. The Women’s Transitional Facility will become a space for respite, healing and rehabilitation with the key aim to seamlessly integrate these individuals into society.
