01BREWS ON THE CORNER

Studio 1B l Winter 2022 l Prof. David Beker

Media: Hand Drafting, Model Making, Photoshop

Duration: 10 Weeks

Brews on the Corner is a project located at the corner of Lancaster Avenue and 35th Street in the West Philadelphia neighborhood of Powelton Village. The project is a mixed-use building, with a restaurant/music venue on the ground floor with two floors of apartments above. For the purpose of this project, the interior of the apartments were not designed. The site being on a major commerical corridor and the rich history of Powelton Village, served as a catlalyst for the idea of creating a strong sense of community through the project. The intent was to create a gathering point for the community on the corner, or a “Landmark on Lancaster ”. This is done by creating a large cylindrical cut out on the corner of the site, inspired by a nearby building. This void creates the entry to the restuarant and main outdoor seating area. The outdoor seating and balconies on the sides of the building contribute to the commmunity aspect of the design by encouraging eyes on the street.

02 PCR BOATHOUSE

Studio 1C l Spring 2022 l Prof. Jennifer Hofer Jeffery

Media: Hand Drafting, Autocad, Model Making, Photoshop

Duration: 10 Weeks

This project is an addition to Philadelphia’s historic Boathouse Row. Situated along the Schuylkill River, this boathouse for Philadelphia City Rowing (PCR) brings a new light to the familiar sight of Boathouse Row at night. PCR focuses on breaking down barriers for kids to get into the sport of rowing, and wanted a boathouse that was focused around community. The large steps on the ground floor can serve as an impromptu gathering space as kids, coaches, and parents enter the boathouse. The glass facade facing Kelly Drive and the semi-transparent polycarbonate cladding allowing for transparency and a visual connection with the community. PCR also wanted to focus on flexible communal space, which occupies the second floor and the roof. The flex space and the roof garden can become classrooms for the kids, with the garden serving as a space for children to learn and nutrition and nature. Utilzing the polycarbonate cladding, the building interalizes the iconic lighting of Boathouse Row, creating a new interpretation of a classic Philadelphia scene.

03 MANTUA ROWHOUSE

Studio 2A l Fall 2022 l Prof. Jackie Niemiec

Media: Autocad, Model Making, Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator

Duration: 10 Weeks

This project is a reinterpreation on the basic unit of housing that makes up Philadelphia, the rowhouse. The rowhouse is designed to be occupied by a homeowner on the first and second floors, along with the basement, and the renter on the third floor. This model of housing will be used to create generational wealth for the homeowner. Since the rowhouse is made up of two distinct units, more privacy is needed than in a normal rowhouse. This need for privacy is manifested in the use of two seperate staircases. The exterior staricase connects the rental unit to the porch. The staircase is wrapped in a brick veil, which allows for light to enter and the staircase and allows for privacy and protection from the elements. This brick screen takes a vernacular material and elevates it to a more contemporary level. The porch and stoop serves as a gathering space and a continuation of West Philadelphia porch culture.

04 COURTYARD COMMUNITY

Studio 2B l Winter 2023 l Prof. Jim Rowe

Media: Autocad, Model Making, Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator

Duration: 10 Weeks

Situated on a vacant lot in Philadelphia’s Francisville neighborhood, the project consists of a 32-unit apartment building and a branch library of the Free Library of Philadelphia. The site plan is centered around a courtyard, which people from the apartments and library have acess to. The courtyard offers a more protected and intimate open space compared to the park across the street. Due to the courtyard being shared by the apartments and library, there can be a multitude of users throughout the day. The apartments are broken up into three buildings. With each building based around a vertical circulation core. On the second and third floor, each core has two 2 bedroom units, a1 bedroom unit, and a studio. This arrangement allows for a more neighborhood like quality to each floor and for the 2 bedroom units to get light and ventilation from multiple sides. The library, which is clad in limestone, anchors the main corner of the sites and establishes the prescence of the public institution. The majority of the program for the library is located on the ground floor to allow for the staff to easily manage the space.

05 HARVEST PAVILION DETAIL

Representation l Fall 2022 l Prof. Daniel Brown Media: Hand Drafting, Photosho, Rhino, Illustrator

Duration: 3 Weeks

For this project, a section detail of an unfamiliar building was given. This section detail is of the Harvest Pavilion in Yang Cheng Lake, Kunshan, China by Vector Architects. The building is surrounded by glass panels and doors which blend the distinction between inside and outside. Bamboo is used on the ceiling and the exterior to bring vernacular materials into the project. The canopy utilizes a trellis system to provide shade. The building’s design and structure are simplistic, relating to the simple landscape and actvities going on in the inside. Isometric section details were constructed using hand drafting and Photoshop, and then with Rhino, to explore the structural system and materiaity of the building.
