Dairy Product Packaging: A Buoyant Industry Dairy activities have traditionally been integral to India’s rural economy. The country is the world’s largest producer of dairy products and also their largest consumer. On the demand side, the situation is buoyant. With the sustained growth of the Indian economy and a consequent rise in disposable incomes during the last two decades, more and more people today are able to afford milk and various other dairy products. This trend is expected to continue with the sector experiencing a robust growth in demand in the short and medium run. Indian dairy industry also offers good opportunities to both domestic and foreign investors for entry and expansion. According to CRISIL, while the organized dairy segment has been growing 22% annually the last 5 years, it will do even better in the next 3 years. Rich nutritional qualities of dairy products, rising purchasing power and growing health consciousness of Indian consumers has shifted their preference to branded dairy products. Although over 80% of milk consumption in India is that of liquid milk, other value-added subsegments like yoghurt, butter, ghee, paneer, cheese, dairy whitener, condensed milk, infant formula, ice-cream and cream, etc. form a growing market. Experts feel this segment will see 22-24% CAGR in the coming years. In this segment, ice-cream, cheese and yoghurt are expected to register the highest growth. According to a report on www.euromonitor.com, overall dairy product packaging in India witnessed a growth of 8% in 2015. The increase in availability of packaged milk in all formats of retailing channels along with increasing consumer preference for yoghurt and sour milk drinks, flavoured milk drinks, plain spoonable yoghurt and flavoured milk drinks supported the growth of dairy packaging in 2015.
