(Not pictured: Carlie Wopperer ’05) In response to an alumni communication from faculty member Larry Desautels this year, Marykate Oakley writes, “I had every intention of giving [to Nichols] anyway, but I wanted to reach out personally and let you know how much I enjoyed reading your words and how the veracity with which you spoke (wrote) reinvigorated the great pride I have in the opportunities Nichols afforded me. It’s hard to believe I graduated nearly nine years ago, and though I don’t make it back to Buffalo nearly as much as I’d like, not a day passes that I’m not grateful for the ways Nichols shaped me into the person I am today. From the field, to the ice, to the classroom, my Nichols experiences instilled in me the importance of being a loyal teammate, a diligent student, and most of all, a good person with integrity and strong

character. And for all of these things, I am forever indebted. It was not until I went on to other academic institutions that I could fully appreciate the solid foundation Nichols provides its students. As you know, I did my undergraduate work at Princeton. I then went on to get my master’s from Columbia, and I am pursuing a doctorate in clinical psychology at UMass Amherst. The point (aside from catching you up on my life) is to share that, to this day, I have never felt more engaged in and challenged by my academics than I was at Nichols, and for this, I fully credit the teachers and administrators for creating an environment that encourages intellectual curiosity and fuels a passion for knowledge. So I hope your students are taking full advantage!”
