@nicheonline

Well, it’s about time you got here! For many months now, the entire NICHE team has been planning for the new year. Like an excited child waiting impatiently for Santa to come at Christmastime, it felt like 2015 would never arrive! I cannot wait to share a year of splendid fashion shoots, a bounty of beauty and inspirational lifestyle articles. True to our name, NICHE magazine strives to be unique and continually evolving, and 2015 is no different. We have tweaked our fashion forward approach to remain worldly but with a definitive local perspective. Our content remains intelligent with enhanced editorials that touch a local chord; stories I am certain you will love reading. Our design remains ever elegant, with glossy photos and thoughtful layouts, but this year, with a new approach to reader connections and expanded online exclusives.

And now we welcome the new year. Full of things that have

NEVER BEEN

-RAINER MARIA RILKE

The theme of this issue is New Year New You… and having just turned 50, I am sharing my journey, along with Robin Farrell and Diana Yaworski, with you - as we experienced facial rejuvenation. Also included in this special segment are articles about Venus Swan technology, body contouring and lash extensions [New Year New You, page 39].

8

WINTER 2015

Another new twist for 2015 is a modification to our very popular celebrity ICON series. For this year, we decided to showcase iconic couples, and we’re starting off the new year with one of the biggest power couples – Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie [Icon, page 26].

@nichemagazine Follow NICHE for fashion, beauty & lifestyle inspiration, events & contests!

Looking for a travel adventure? Check out our experiential travel feature on San Francisco, told only as NICHE travel columnist Chelsea Forman can [Travel with NICHE, page 80]. Personally, I travelled to Canada’s East Coast and brought back a story about the most delightful resort, just a stone’s throw from Peggy’s Cove [Hidden Gems, page 22]. This issue of NICHE will not disappoint our fashion and beauty fans. Reader favourites are back including Face It, Beauty [re] Marks, Hell on Heels, and of course runway shows and seasonal collections [Fashion Forward, page 72]. A few new ones to watch for include a local take on a celebrity look [Get The Look, page 92] and a column from local jewellery designer, Sylvia Tennant who takes us inside the world of fashion accoutrements [Accessory Wall, page 52]. As always, my goal for NICHE magazine in 2015 is to not leave this year the same way we found it, and to offer inspiration that will help you Discover Yours.

HONG KONG

AWAY

ASIA’S FRAGRANT HARBOUR

by Chelsea Forman | travel columnist

J

ust off the coast of Southern China, at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta, is the sensational city of Hong Kong. With the accessibility of its geographical location, Hong Kong has long been an intersection for international trade, linking Eastern and Western worlds. Hong Kong encompasses a number of different regions, most notable being Hong Kong Island to the south of Victoria Harbour. This thriving cosmopolitan city has a colourful blend of culture and character, most definitely a result of the areas unique history. Hong Kong’s futuristic and advanced architecture is a breathtaking juxtaposition to the areas natural beauty. At night the city lights glow so bright that it will leave you dazed and completely enamoured with Hong Kong, a city that redefines the limits of impossible.

10

WINTER 2015

W H AT ’ S I N A N A M E The name Hong Kong originates from the Cantonese name Heūng Góng, meaning Fragrant Harbour. Prior to 1842 the name was specifically linked to a tiny inlet called Aberdeen Harbour, where incense trees were exported from.

W H AT T O D O Your time in Hong Kong will only be restricted by your own imagination. Anything you could ever want to do is right at your fingertips. In order to get your bearings in this super-metropolis, take a tram ride up The Peak. This is the highest point on the island, with the best views and highest real estate values in the world. Back at city level you will find an abundance of historical temples and bazaars, fine and unusual dining, extraordinary amusement parks, endless festivals and plenty of street vendors to barter with. While shopping malls are open very late, all of those women who particularly love a bargain need to check out the Ladies Market, which has over 100 stalls filled with clothing, accessories and fabulous souvenirs. Find time to take a stroll along the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade. Start at the famed Clock Tower and past the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the Hong Kong Space Museum, the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Avenue of Stars. As you pass a handful of tourist hotspots, it will become increasingly difficult to concentrate on anything other than the staggering beauty of the Hong Kong skyline, gleaming over the bustling waters of Victoria Harbour.

Oceanstone Seaside Resort

A stone’s throw from Peggy’s Cove

I

by Tracey Drake

have always dreamed of finding a special little cottage, tucked away in an idyllic setting on sandy shores in the middle of nowhere, and holing up there for an honest-to-goodness writer’s retreat. Too bad the pace of my life doesn’t allow for such a luxury – at least not yet. So, for now, I take the quiet moments as they come my way, finding tranquil places to recharge my mind and creative spirit. One such spot, Oceanstone Seaside Resort, which came to me quite by surprise during a visit to Nova Scotia, has left me longing for East coast sunsets, seafood and sincerely nice folks. Oceanstone Seaside Resort is located just forty minutes from Halifax and down the road from iconic Peggy’s Cove. Since it is considered one of the most romantic and picturesque places to get married in Canada, I was expecting pretty and maybe a little contrived. What I found instead was a genuine tranquility and warm hospitality that is whatever you choose to make of it. Whether you want to hide away in a cozy cottage (as I did) or relax in a luxury suite; enjoy a candlelit restaurant dinner or experience a true East coast beachfront sunset picnic - having it your way, and still having it all, is what you can expect at this hidden gem on Nova Scotia’s south shore. Named after the Canadian writer, I stayed in Grey Owl Cottage, which was beachfront and well hidden amongst a tangle of tall trees. With an ocean view that soothes the soul, and a woodstove that warms the toes, this cottage should be on the front of a postcard! The only time I ventured away from the sanctity of my oceanfront cabin was to dine al fresco at the Captain’s House, with Executive Chef Bryan Corkery. A great story teller as well as a brilliant cook, Chef Bryan taught us how to prepare fresh lobster, before serving up a dinner feast that consisted of his delightful and modern riff on clam chowder, and the aforementioned East Coast lobster, that was bigger, sweeter and more delicious than any lobster I had ever eaten. When the time comes and my life takes a pause, I would very much like to return to Oceanstone for a week or three, settle once again into Grey Owl Cottage, and catch up… with myself.

BRAD PITT & ANGELINA JOLIE

U

by Josie Joy Saldat

ndoubtedly one of the most breathtakingly radiant and natural leaders, Angelia Jolie exchanged vows this year with Hollywood heartthrob, Brad Pitt. The super couple also known as ‘Brangelina’ embarked in their romantic relationship while on set starring in Mr & Mrs. Smith in 2005. With a total of six children, three adopted: Maddox, Pax and Zahara and three of their own: Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne, there are no signs of them slowing down as two of the world’s biggest movie stars. Stepping into a brighter and unfamiliar spotlight, actress and philanthropist, Angelina Jolie is now taking her turn behind the camera. Debuting as a director, Jolie lead her first documentary in 2007, A Place in Time followed four years later with her next film, a wartime drama In the Land of Blood and Honey which encompassed a love story in the time of the Bosnian War. Appearing in the forefront of Hollywood, Jolie starred in her biggest commercial success yet, fantasy film Maleficent. Recently completing her work on her newest directorial role, Louis Zamperini

biopic - Unbroken and buzz revolving around Jolie writing, directing and costarring with Pitt in romantic drama By the Sea, this power couple is rising higher than ever before, and they are doing it all hand-in-hand. Tying the knot in August 2014, the couple wed at their estate Château Miraval in Correns, France. Jolie wore a custom Versace dress to the ceremony with drawings and artwork from their children covering the white gown. Known for starring and appearing in over 40 major films, Pitt has been active in social and environmental issues. Not afraid to speak his mind, Pitt commented to the press that the wedding with Jolie would occur only when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able. Brad and Angelina currently have three homes; their main residence in Los Angeles, Chateau Miraval, a site first inhabited in pre-Roman times in the village of Correns, France and their newest addition, Villa Costanza, 4.4 acres of property in the wine-production area Valpolicella, Italy.

A family is a risky venture

because the greater the love, the greater the loss... That’s the trade-off.

BUT I’LL TAKE IT ALL. -BRAD PITT

Recently turned 51, Pitt has come a long way since moving from hometown Shawnee, Oklahoma to Los Angeles in hopes of perusing an acting career. Not only recognized internationally as one of the top male actors of his generation, Pitt also co-founded the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, a charitable organization to aid humanitarian causes around the world. With an initial investment of $8.5 million to the foundation in 2006, there’s no question why both Pitt and Jolie have been topping Time Magazine’s Top 100 most influential people in the world. Jolie is noted for work with refugees as a Special Envoy as well as a former Goodwill Ambassador for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Her involvement with the UN began while filming her most recognizable international film Tomb Raider in Cambodia. 28

WINTER 2015

Undergoing a preventative double mastectomy in 2013, Jolie made the collective decision to lower her risk of cancer and Pitt stood by her side as both have undergone many challenges despite the sparkle and glamour of their stature. Witnessing the power couple together brings about a sense of awe – both with titles as ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ and ‘Sexiest Woman Alive’. It is clear that Pitt admires the unique and extraordinary traits that Jolie possesses: preforming 80% off all stunts, being noted as the only actress to control her own PR, and having a Private Pilot Certificate, are just a few. It goes both ways, as Jolie clearly needs a man to support her independent, determined and nurturing personality; all qualities that Pitt has in spades, making them a legendary iconic couple.

MODERN AGING AT

40 - 50 - 60

Halfway through 2014, I started to dread my upcoming 50th birthday and seriously considered ways I could make myself feel better; in particular to have a refreshed, more restful appearance (don’t mistake that with wanting to look younger, please – there is a difference). Along with two other women who felt the same, Robin who just turned 40, and Diana who was adjusting to her 60s with some discontent, we felt that it was high time to debunk the myth about facial rejuvenation. The term ‘medical spa’ was so badly abused over the last fifteen years, most people don’t even want to discuss it. The truth is that modern treatments, delivered in the right treatment facility, by a licensed physician, is something worth talking about.

You just cannot help but be affected by Robin’s liveliness and genuine personality. As the popular co-host of Kool Mornings on 107.3 KOOL FM, Robin, who just turned 40, is a well-educated and accomplished professional woman, and the co-founder of the ALS Cycle of Hope. Robin spends a lot of time in studio, being heard but not seen. With a new decade ahead, Robin wanted a physical boost, as she put it, and her time with Dr. Banks at MD Esthetics was a very positive experience. The simple fact that Dr. Banks took the time to understand Robin as a person was an important part of this process for her. Robin’s transformation is at once subtle and remarkable. She loves the brow lift, achieved through Botox, and that her skin is glowing. We love that playful spark in Robin’s eye!

“One of our goals at MD ESTHETICS is to have a person look as vibrant and youthful as they feel. Robin has an amazing energy, full of positivity, playfulness, and personality. I am really happy how her treatments turned out and happier still how it made her feel. Now her skin reflects her youthful energy. Botox has given her a very natural brow lift and makes her eyes look vibrant and bright. Through soft tissue filler, composed of a substance found naturally in our body, we were able to restore lost facial volume and structure. This produced softening of her undereye shadows and lifting of the skin along her jawline. The “icing on the cake” was improved skin clarity and glow through a laser/light treatment and medicalgrade skin care. All of her treatments had essentially no downtime and can be completed in one day. The end result is a refreshed, revitalized, and restored Robin that looks amazing and with a “can’t quite put a finger on it” quality.” Dr. Banks, MD Esthetics

TRACEY DRAKE Magazine Editor

As Editor in Chief and Creative Director of NICHE magazine and at HOME magazine, it is hard for Tracey to cram everything into a day, and often times, her skin pays the price for her work schedule. After turning 50, it was suddenly staring her in the face and she was ready to make some positive changes. Tracey was clear with Dr. Banks that she was very comfortable with who she was, and didn’t want drastic changes. She simply wanted to look less tired, and more rejuvenated, and the team at MD Esthetics gave her exactly that – no more, no less. Tracey is ecstatic with her skin that is now refreshed, polished and even-toned with all the redness gone. Her favourite procedure was a toss-up between Volumalift, which immediately restored volume around her eyes and lips, and Botox which removed that “nasty editor’s scowl” (her words).

“Tracey is one of the most amazing people I have met. She portrays a sense of confidence and competence that is rare. At MD ESTHETICS we understand the importance of a person’s confidence and how having healthy, vibrant skin can help maintain this. Tracey had our Volumalift procedure that involved restoration of facial structure and volume with soft tissue fillers, composed of a naturallyoccurring substance. It’s important to note that this treatment is a restoration, not an augmentation; We simply want the person to look healthy, vibrant, and ageappropriately youthful, at the same time retaining all their beautiful features and character. Tracey also had Botox to help soften lines and to tighten skin around her eyes. Her eyes look amazing. She also had IPL to clarify her skin, targeting brown spots, redness including visible vessels, giving the skin a more even tone and clarity. With the additional benefit from medical-grade skin care from SkinMedica, Tracey’s skin has a new glow that she will be able to maintain easily over time.” Dr. Banks, MD Esthetics

DIANA YAWORSKI Medical Professional

Diana is a vivacious, active woman; a mother and a grandmother. Now in her sixties, she told NICHE that she wanted to look as good as she feels. Diana works in the medical industry and leads a full life. As you can see from Diana’s before and after photos, there is a newfound confidence. NICHE had so much fun working with Diana; choosing wardrobe from Melanie Lyne that was youthful and fun, and yet still age appropriate. Diana wasn’t really sure what to expect but is thrilled with the results. Her favourite procedure was the Fraxel laser treatment. She was amazed at how immediate the results were; the sun damage on her face a thing of the past and she now has a much smoother, youthful complexion.

“Diana is truly a delight, as she exudes warmth and has a lovely youthful energy about her. Diana’s goal, like most of our patients, is to look refreshed and revitalized, while maintaining a natural appearance. In other words, to look great for her age. A nice place to start is to correct the deflation of the facial contours and volume loss in the temples, cheeks, tear troughs, lips, lower face/chin area. This can be corrected in less than an hour with our unique Volumalift procedure using injectable fillers that are composed of a substance found naturally in the skin. We next used Botox to reduce lines & wrinkles around eyes, forehead, and frown area. The next task was to improve Diana’s skin tone and overall skin health. We achieved this with a Hydrafacial, followed by IPL, Laser Genesis, and Fraxel laser treatments to remove brown spots and reduce areas of redness. To complete her transformation and support her long-term skin health, we introduced an anti-aging skin care routine using clinically proven SkinMedica products. Diana got the results she desired from a collection of treatments that were tailored to her goals, all of which had little or no downtime and are easy to maintain.” Dr. Milkovich MD Esthetics

Venus Swan Redefining the New You by Elizabeth Parsons | esthetician

V

enus Swan is an esthetic device that is clinically proven to improve the skin’s elasticity and reduce the appearance of cellulite. Venus Swan utilizes multi-polar radio frequency which produce a soothing and therapeutic heat matrix over the skin. Skin tightening, wrinkle reduction and cellulite reduction occur because the multi-polar radio frequency causes a thermal reaction in the tissue which stimulates the body’s natural healing response. This restoring response causes the skin to contract, achieving tighter skin, softening of wrinkles and reduced cellulite. In a nutshell, Venus Swan stimulates fibroblasts to increase collagen synthesis and create lipolysis through its thermal action. Redefining the new you, Venus Swan treatments are used to reduce wrinkles, rhytides, cellulite, circumferential fat, and tighten skin. The Venus Swan delivers effective results in a painless treatment that requires no downtime. • • • •

LASH EXTENSIONS lengthening your natural beauty 2015 may just become the year of the lashes. Over the last five years, professional lash extensions have continued to gain widespread acceptance, and 2015 is setting up to be even bigger.

If you’re not in NICHE, where are you?

Why is that? So much more natural looking than extensions of even a few years ago, and much more real looking than glueon lash sets, professionally applied lash extensions reduce time getting ready, and with less cosmetics to buy, they can save you money over the long term. Plus, they are just so darned pretty! Technician – Protect your eyes by choosing a lash technician that is properly trained, uses sterile tools and lashes, applies extensions only to your grown up lashes (and not baby lashes), and talks to you, prior to application, about your lifestyle and lash needs, to ensure you get the right thickness, shape and length. Application – Lash extensions are applied using a safe adhesive, directly to your own lashes. They come in a variety of thicknesses, lengths, shades and of course, quality. Don’t skim on the cheapies! Duration – The average person sheds 1-5 natural lashes each day, so the average refill time is 3-4 weeks. When cared for, extensions will remain intact until your natural lash falls out. You can prolong the time between refills by not rubbing your eyes, don’t use mascara and keep oil based and moisture rich products away from your lash extensions.

LASH TIP: Avoid getting your new lash extensions wet for 24 hours. Also, intense heat - shower, hot tub, steam room - will cause lash adhesive to reactivate (not good!).

About Body. WEIGHING IN on the body contouring conversation, Dr. Mark Lupin of Victoria, BC’s Cosmedica, gives NICHE magazine a take on Canada’s leading non-surgical fat reducing treatments.

The BIG issue.

Canadian men and women are as susceptible to developing pockets of unwanted and stubborn fat as any of our neighbours. This fat may seem all too resistant to diet and exercise - how rude - and may impact our wardrobe decisions, physical confidence and self-esteem.

Leading the Canadian body contouring scene are three unique non-invasive technologies with varying benefits. One of the key differences between these three systems is their mechanism of action: how they select and destroy fat cells and how that mechanism can benefit or affect you in other ways.

We want solutions that work without the need for restrictive diets or intense workout commitments. In my Victoria, BC practice, I meet hundreds of healthy individuals committed to living well and balanced with troublesome areas of annoying, persistent fat. They call it a muffin top, their love handles or pinch excess fat on their abdomens, lower buttocks or thighs - whatever it is, they/ we want it gone.

UltraShape®

We are fortunate to live in a day and age where science and technology have evolved real and effective solutions. Today’s leading body contouring treatments have answered our desire to forego the risks of surgery and anesthesia while respecting our need for no downtime treatments that work, keep us safe and keep us in life.

by Dr. Mark Lupin | dermatologist

WINTER 2015

The first non-invasive fat-removal device to be approved by Health Canada in 2007, UltraShape can reduce your abdominal circumference (total waistline or midsection) in as little as one treatment. It can also be used to treat the thighs and hips. Patients enjoy an established safety and comfort profile as well as UltraShape’s ability to selectively target fat cells without disrupting surrounding tissues. Following treatment, there is no bruising or downtime and results tend to be noticed sooner than with other options. Mechanism of action: Mechanical disruption via acoustic ultrasonic energy (non-thermal).

Liposonix®

Custom contouring with the possible benefit of skin tightening and improved skin texture is offered with Liposonix. A thermal type of energy simultaneously targets fat cells and promotes collagen synthesis to firm skin. Results can be noticed around twelve weeks and while there is no downtime, the treated areas can be minimally sore and bruising is possible. One to two treatments are normally all that is required. Mechanism of action: Thermal via high intensity focused ultrasound energy (HIFU technology).

CoolSculpting®

Newest on the scene in Canada, CoolSculpting offers a solution to ‘debulk’ and contour the body in one to two treatments. Patients report a relatively comfortable treatment experience although there can be some soreness and numbness after treatments. CoolSculpting selectively freezes targeted fat cells with relative sparing of surrounding tissues. While this is a heavily marketed technology and it can be effective, there have been reported cases of paradoxical increase in fat which are not reported with UltraShape® or LipoSonix®. On the upside, within twelve to sixteen weeks, the body can be better contoured.

With any treatment, results will vary. The differences between body contouring options in the Canadian marketplace reflect the differences in a number of critical components; the engineering, development and clinical testing process, a device’s power, strength and even the modality for delivering treatment will affect the overall efficacy and experience of a body contouring treatment. As with most technologies, it is at least if not more important to choose a physician and clinic that are the most experienced. To find the best option for you, consult your local physician to help point you in the right direction and ensure you feel well informed.

ACCESSORIES! for the LOVE of GLOVES

I

by Sylvia Tennant | fashion columnist

t has never been easier to dress with detail during these colder months, thanks to refreshingly innovative accessory trends from fashion’s most celebrated brands. Gloves have officially stolen the spotlight on the runway, and this winter is the time to have fun with various interpretations of these high-end looks. Opera length gloves no longer need a white-tie party invitation to come out of your dresser. To avoid looking like Cinderella, translate a long glove to everyday wear with crop-sleeved jackets and ponchos. Keep it modern and feminine with colours, textures or patterns your options are endless! For evening, don’t be afraid to get embellished. High-impact accessories are here to stay, and no one did it better than Dolce & Gabbana. Their Fall/ Winter 2014 gloves are heavily ornamented with embroidery, jewels, and pearls. If Dolce isn’t in your budget, I suggest a DIY night with some leather-grade epoxy, vintage brooches or earrings, and thin chain (hello, old necklaces in your jewellery drawer). For the less elaborate fashionista, or for days when you’d rather have jewels around your neck, look to Lanvin’s subtler sheered gloves for inspiration. I like them best with a sleeveless dress, although this version was impeccably styled with both short and longer sleeve lengths on the runway. In my opinion, gloves are one of the most overlooked accessories in the modern woman’s closet. Take advantage of the season and get shopping for pairs that compliment your personal style. Your hands (and manicure) will thank you.

TRAVEL BITES by Stuart Brown | wine columnist

O K A N A G A N VA L L E Y, B R I T I S H C O L U M B I A

T

asting wine is a wonderful way to spend your day, weekend or even your vacation. I have heard countless tales from my friends and family about their travels in wine regions and visiting the local producers. I, too, have spent many vacations exploring wine regions and tasting wines paired with local foods and regional cheeses. Wine tourism is growing in popularity, and of course, the wine industry has worked to accommodate this growing business. Many wineries around the world now provide exquisite tasting rooms with vineyard views, wine tasting events, paired dinners, tours of the vineyards, wine making facilities and cellars, and of course accommodation to make the visit complete. It is reasonably easy to now create a full experience for the travelling wine enthusiast.

And wine not? Wine is a beautiful thing that comes

from a specific place where the grapes it is made from are

grown. It can complement regional cuisine and it is the perfect beverage to enjoy after a long day of sightseeing. There is almost nothing better than lingering over a glass of wine while looking at the sun dip below rolling hills of vineyards, especially if you are sharing that moment with someone special in your life. Wine experience is unique to each place it is created from. We should all take the time to enjoy the food, people, sights, culture, and wine all coming together near or at the vineyard and where the wine is created. Wine regions, like Bordeaux and Burgundy in France and Napa and Sonoma counties in California, are wellknown tasting destinations. More recently, however, areas around South America, Canada, South Africa, and New Zealand have come into their own as wine tasting destinations. Here are a few of my favourite wine destinations and a few examples of my favourite wines that you will want to taste while you are exploring there.

1 . O K A N A G A N VA L L E Y, BRITISH COLUMBIA:

I know it is near to home, but it is also one of my favourite wine regions. Though the Okanagan is a region of small production, the quality of wine is amazing and the diversity of styles and varieties is astounding. Fabulous Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah grown in a semi-arid desert surrounding some pretty beautiful lakes. From the Canada/ U.S. border, the Okanagan Valley runs north from the summer vacation hotspot of Osoyoos, through the region’s viticulture center in Penticton, and past Okanagan Lake to Vernon. Most wineries have tasting rooms that are open to the public and they offer tasting experiences generally starting from $15 per person. From the modern, but approachable tasting room at Poplar Grove, to the boudoir-style tasting room at Dirty Laundry there is something for everyone in the Okanagan.

2. MENDOZA, ARGENTINA:

In recent years, Argentina has established itself as a top wineproducing region, known for its exceptional Malbec, as well as some lovely Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. I last visited in 2012 and the craze for Argentinean wine has not subsided. Even though many of the wineries in Mendoza offer tastings and tours, it is best to have a reservation set up before you arrive. Getting a wine tour set up for you out of the city of Mendoza is highly recommended. The scenery is magnificent; some of the wineries are architectural achievements with vineyards set upon the rolling foothills with the backdrop of the majestic Andes Mountains. The wines compliment some of the best beef in the world - as well as my favourite fingerfood - empanadas! You might even learn to tango while down there…

4 . W I L L A M E T T E VA L L E Y, O R E G O N :

When it comes to wine regions, Burgundy holds a special place in my heart. With only two grapes, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, how difficult could it be to understand and explore Burgundy? Well, it is extremely difficult, but well-worth the work. Burgundy has many communes that each have a variety of appellations that can make it seem quite complex. It is great fun to be able to taste and experience the amazing wines that this area of historic tradition can produce. This is about as old-school as a wine region can get where not much has changed in hundreds of years. My favourite communes are the famous Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin.

Running south from the uniquely down-to-earth city of Portland, this valley is populated with many quality wine producers. The region is best known for its outstanding Pinot Noir, but you will also want to check out the flavourful Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer. This is a home-grown trip that is comfortable and easygoing, not pretentious and complex. You will be captivated with the beautiful scenery of rolling vineyards with the backdrop of the Cascade Mountains. A couple of my favourites are Domaine Drouhin and Evening Land Vineyards. 5 . B A R O S S A VA L L E Y, A U S T R A L I A :

One of Australia’s oldest wine regions found just outside of the city of Adelaide, Barossa is a must visit when Down Under! It is a region of many mesoclimates where it can be extremely hot on the valley floor to progressively cooler at higher altitudes in the hillsides and further north of the valley. The ruling grape is Shiraz (Syrah), but keep a close eye out for some amazing examples of Riesling, Semillon, Chardonnay, Grenache, Mourvedre, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Oh, and did I mention the people? Some of my favourite characters in the wine world live in Barossa… always a party.

Your FASHION RESOLUTION

R

by Sara Rose | Fashion Columnist

iddle me this. When dishcloths become “worn”, we turn them into rags BUT when part of our wardrobe gets tattered and tired, why do we try to make sense of it and pretend its edgy?

Is it impossible for you to let go of your favourite fashion pieces, even if they are ready for the trash? Time for a fashion intervention resolution! Let’s begin this year with our best fashionable foot forward, and I don’t just mean purchasing new shoes. 2015 is a great year to begin your own purchase and purge (P&P) program, with an attempt at building a new eye for upcycling. Not only will this keep your style up to date, but it will also create the clutter free closet that you really do want. Think about it this way — You have ONE body and just SEVEN days in a week! So, speaking for myself, there is truly no explanation as to why I own well over 50 dresses for any occasion, and still find the need to purchase more.

CREATE A FA SHION PA CT WITH Y OU RSEL F

Step 1

Clean your closet, asking yourself the following question: How many garments are in your wardrobe that you never wear? Get rid of them, but never throw them away! There are so many ways to recycle the pieces you no longer want or wear, including consignment, online selling or donating to a local charity shop that accepts used clothing (Value Village, Salvation Army, etc). One of the best parts of a good closet purge is the rediscovery of fashion you forgot you had. For instance, let’s say there’s a sweater, and the purge pile is calling its name, but you absolutely love it! Before you get rid of, as assuming the condition is good, look to the rest of your closet for new ways to match and coordinate. If you struggle with creativity, look to fashion magazines for inspiration. Fashion editorials and street style images, like those inside NICHE magazine, are always covering a large demographic of style, body types and seasons. These are done by professionals to provide style guidance. Upcycling your wardrobe, whenever possible, will help to redefine your attention to detail and appreciation for the art that is fashion.

58

WINTER 2015

Step 2

Starting right now, for every garment or accessory you purchase, get rid of one. This process will provide guidance into a whole new world of realization and reality. Before you purchase a new item, ask yourself: Do I really want or need this or is it an impulse buy? If I do buy it, what piece from my current fashion collection will have to go? Is the trade-off really worth it?

Succeeding in this process will bring a new found love and appreciation for what you buy and what you already have!

Compounds found in lip balms including petroleum, camphor and menthol does offer temporary relief, but does nothing to promote healing or improve hydration. MARSALA 2015

by Elizabeth Dean | design columnist

E

ach year, the colour experts at Pantone® try to gauge the societal mood and choose a colour of the year. For 2015, that colour is Marsala, an earthy wine red, which Pantone describes as an impactful, fullbodied and elegant grounded statement; a red-brown hue named for Sicilian wine. Personally, I liken the colour to a 1970’s mood ring which was gloomy and lacklustre, or a muddier version of a rich Mediterranean terracotta. This neutral (and somewhat serious) tone has the ability to be universally appealing and when used in moderation, can translate easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors. From paint chips and furniture showrooms, to fashion boutiques and rug stores, this colour will be everywhere in 2015. Luckily, there are ways to use it as a strong and effective interior design anchor colour, without dampening your décor spirit.

PANTONE® COLOUR OF THE YEAR

E L Y T S with

Play with patterns: Even when we love a colour, it can sometimes be too much - too dark, too light, too red, too brown. You get the idea. I love to take a favourite colour and find it hidden harmoniously within a great fabric pattern. Marsala might be too drab for small, sun-starved spaces on the West Coast, but in this context, it can be perfection. Liliana Occasional Chair in floral, Pier1 Imports, $399.

Culturing Life

Step back a shade: Love the idea of Marsala, but finding the tone a bit sombre for your room? Look for paint or furniture with similar undertones, but with a brighter base tint. For example, Ikea sells Behandla (a red glazing paint) that would be the perfect compromise. And if you don’t care to mess up your manicure with paint, they offer a line of furniture that comes ready to enjoy. Hemnes Linen Cupboard in red, Ikea Canada, $329.

Offset a feature: I love a serious feature wall! When the colour is well selected, it can set the mood for an entire room. Marsala as a feature wall colour is not a bad option – just remember to offset it with light coloured furnishings. Also, this colour can go from zero to formal in no time at all, so if you are looking for modern edge, err on the side of contemporary with your furniture and artwork selections.

by Josie Joy Saldat | fashion columnist

anadian Fashion Designer Joseph Mimran (Joe) was born in 1952 in Casablanca, Morocco. Known infamously for launching Club Monaco and Joe Fresh, Mimran formed an infinite love for the industry at a young age; his mother owned her own couturier and dressed Hollywood’s elite. With the Mimran family moving into the heart of Toronto, Joe’s brother, Saul purchased a small factory within the garment district to help produce their mothers designs on a larger scale. Working in the family business, Mimran soon realized the demand for tailored work wear for the modern woman. Partnering with his brother, Mimran launched a new line with a modern aesthetic in 1979. The duo quickly transformed into a trio with the hiring of Canadian Designer, Alfred Sung to step in as head designer, which resulted in an Alfred Sung collection launching across North America. Mimran made the decision to let his partners manage the direction of the Alfred Sung brand, as he embarked on a new adventure — the creation of Club Monaco.

Starting with Mimran’s struggle to find a plain white cotton shirt, he decided that Club Monaco would be a brand consisting of minimal basics. At that time, with big hair, shoulder pads and bright colours on the fashion front, The Bay (now Hudson’s Bay) and Eaton’s department stores didn’t understand his concept and minimalistic approach of the CM line, and they turned it down. This led to Mimran heading out into the retail world on his own, and the first Club Monaco retail shop opened its doors on Queen St. W in Toronto in 1985. A decade later with the success and acceptance of the brand, Club Monaco opened its flagship location on Fifth Avenue in New York City. By 1999, Club Monaco was worldwide with 125 stores including locations in Canada, USA, South Korea and Japan. Mimran sold Club Monaco to the Polo Ralph Lauren Corp and began investing in emerging businesses. In 2002, Mimran and his wife, designer Kimberly Newport launched her new fashion label, Pink Tartan; Mimran managed the business side and she handled design. Unlike Club Monaco, Pink Tartan, an on-trend, current brand was instantly accepted by department stores, including Holt Renfrew and Saks Fifth Avenue. The Weston Family, owners of Loblaw Companies, took notice of Mimran’s success and asked him to design the President’s Choice home collection as well as a private label collection for their other business, Holt Renfrew. From Mimran’s Toronto based design consulting firm, Mimran & Associates, Mimran oversaw all design of clothing, home and entertainment for Loblaw Companies.

LAST WORD:

JOSEPH MIMRAN

…on the topic of JOE FRESH Since the Canadian launch in 2006, Joseph Mimran has personally overseen the design and development of the extensive Joe Fresh clothing range, from chic footwear to the latest in outdoor fashions. According to Mimran, the Joe Fresh brand is the answer to consumers’ desire for accessible, of-the-moment style with collections for women, men and children, and the label was designed to solve the family’s fashion needs.

Astonished with Mimran’s work in the industry, Loblaw Companies presented the offer to create a private-label line to sell within all of their superstores and markets across the nation. The rest, as they say, is history and Joe Fresh was born. Created in 2006, Joe Fresh is one of Mimran’s greatest successes; affordable fashion that was initially available in 40 Loblaw locations across Canada. Joe Fresh not only offered stylish, fresh and affordable apparel to answer family fashion needs, but also took on exciting special projects such as designing singer, Usher’s outfits for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, collaborating with Barbie and completely redesigning the Scouts Canada uniforms. 68

Joe Fresh is now considered a Canadian fashion success story — and one of the first designers to show a fast fashion collection at Fashion Week. Demand was so high, that the company began opening free-standing stores, with the first flagship store on Granville Street in Vancouver. Mimran continues to contribute to the highly in-demand industry, showcasing

Joe Fresh bi-annually for the season’s collections at Toronto Fashion Week. With high recognition within the industry, retailing guru — Mimran is chairman of the Fashion Design Council of Canada, and is also active in many philanthropic causes. Bringing Canadian heritage influence to the international runway season after season, Mimran is a true Canadian fashion legend.

• Smell is a big indicator when makeup has gone bad. Mascara will have a gasoline-like smell and lip gloss gives off an unpleasant pungent odour. • Foundations and concealers change colour and consistency when it goes bad. • Lipstick becomes difficult to apply smoothing, and will not hold its colour. • When brushes fray easily, are thinning and bristles fall out.

The Good, The Bad & The Memories…

very New Year brings us that sense of fresh starts and new beginnings; that time when we make resolutions and vow to make this year better than the last. It also gives us an opportunity to reflect on the good, bad and the ugly of the last 365 days, which always inspires me and provides me with a movie reel of life lessons. This past year has certainly given me many blessings and gifts, but I was also presented many new and difficult challenges that have touched me, taught me and I believe, made me a better person. While I am so happy the New Year is here, 2014 has forever changed me. Just as I’m sure is the case with you, my past year was filled with amazing highs and some devastating lows, but in retrospect, I am grateful for both. The highest of the highs for me this past year was that, after 15 years of taking medication for his seizures, my son Chase

78

was completely taken off and is now seizure free. Another very high note for me in 2014 took place in Rome, Italy this past March, where I was given the incredible gift of becoming the first ever soloist ever to be permitted to sing in the sacred Sistine Chapel since its erection in 1472. This honour was something I will forever cherish as long as I live. I was asked to accompany a musical group from NY; an opportunity that allowed me to travel throughout Europe, performing with one of my best friends and violinist Rosemary Siemens, to places I had only dreamed of visiting. Later in the year, I spent 2 glorious weeks on holidays with my youngest son Chad, where we visited the country of Colombia for a mother and son trip of a lifetime. I also started a few new business ventures that kept me extremely creative and challenged, and finally got out of a mommy vehicle and purchased myself an electric car, which not only made me feel good about helping the environment, but it is also the car of my dreams.

of him. I will never forget the sheer panic I felt, and the overwhelming need to protect my child. Perhaps the greatest gift I was given this past year came from a dying friend. My brave and courageous friend Adrienne Pace who had battled kidney disease for years and at age 44 chose to end her battle in her own way, and decided to refuse treatment. I had only known Adrienne for a couple years and saw her and spoke to her off and on, but it wasn’t until she was extremely ill that she reached out to me and asked if I wanted to get together. I knew it was going to be very difficult for me to handle, but this wasn’t about me, it was about her. So, I spent a lot of time with her in her last few weeks and although I felt helpless and overwhelmed, I was beyond honoured and grateful to have spent time with this incredibly beautiful, pure spirited woman. She was and will be such an inspiration in my life going forward as her strength gave me a gift I will forever take with me and her spirit will always be a testament to how fragile life is and how we should cherish every living breathing moment. Thank you my dear friend for blessing my life.

Of course, there were also challenging and extremely difficult moments this past year; trying times that I believe had the greatest impact on me and taught me more about love than any other time of my life. Yes, a new year is time for resolutions and My father, whom I absolutely adore, was goals, but lessons from days past always diagnosed with bladder cancer this year teach me the most. which not only gutted me, but presented me with emotions I had never felt before. by Chelsea Forman | travel columnist

y dear friend, Amy, and I have been anxiously awaiting our first solo girl’s getaway away for weeks and alas, it has finally arrived. We are headed to the beautiful city of San Francisco. A city so rich in history, I can hardly contain my excitement. I feel a sudden urge to take my bra off and burn it, throw up peace signs and rock back and forth to Scott McKenzie’s, If You’re Going to San Francisco. I settle for something more tame and conjure my best Jeanette MacDonald impression from San Francisco. You know, when she belts out those catchy lyrics, “San Francisco, open your Golden Gate,” that’s the only line to the song I can remember, but I think I have her tone down, although that may just be because of the happy hour cocktails we enjoyed before take-off. After landing, we hop on the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), and before we know it we are strolling out into the epicentre of downtown San Francisco. Our hotel is located right in the heart of the madness, Union Square, just as we like it. After a quick check-in and change of clothes, we head out into the clear night and hit the infamous hot spot, 620-Jones; if you can believe it, it’s located at 620 Jones Street. The venue has a sprawling roof top patio, and the inside is so trendy, I would describe it as dirty in a cool way, like a hipster with dreadlocks. We dine on wine and cheese and discuss the three full glorious days ahead of us. We settle up our bill and head back to the hotel to get some serious beauty sleep, because come 7am, we walk. If you plan on taking San Francisco seriously do not opt for the cute flat over the comfortable sneaker, those streets with their near vertical hills will eat you alive. There is too much, spread out over such a massive distance that simply cannot be appreciated from the back seat of a cab. That being said, if walking isn’t your thing, both bikes and Segway’s are very popular modes of transportation in the city. Amy and I are walkers, so our first day begins with a brisk one all the way down one of the city’s main drags, Market Street, then along the water to Pier 33, where we will be departing for our Alcatraz Tour.

Please don’t miss Alcatraz because you think it’s scary, or dusty, or whatever — just remember that you will need to book your tickets a good month or more in advance. The history of the island and facility is just incomparable, and the boat ride and views to the city are breathtaking. There are headsets available that will take you on a guided tour. When we finally make it back to the mainland we are completely famished. We cruise down to Pier 39 and check out the famed sea lions before grabbing a bite and a beer at one of the trendy little eateries. There are countless seafood joints and casual fare to enjoy at Pier 39. When you leave, hang a right and keep walking along the water until you reach Fisherman’s Wharf where you will find an abundance of shops, restaurants, bars and fabulous people watching.

From Fisherman’s Wharf, carry on down Beach Street until you reach the park at the end. To the left you will see one of the holiest sights known to women, a little gem called Ghirardelli Square — yes, that is Ghirardelli as in the chocolate. Holy Mother, Amy and I walk inside and it is like Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory meets Pop Tate’s Chok’lit Shoppe. After having our fill of sweet samplers we head out to find a little cocktail spot world renowned for its Irish coffee. 82

WINTER 2015

Buena Vista Café has been in its location on the corners of Hyde and Beach Streets since 1916 and their signature Irish coffee has been served since 1952. Amy and I find a spot at the bar and take a load off. The bartender is a bored looking fellow, dressed in a crisp white dress shirt with a matching snow white moustache and floppy white hair. He doesn’t utter a single word, just looks at us blankly waiting for the obvious: our drink order. “Two Irish Coffees, please Sir!” I say. He’s a Sir; any man with a moustache like this is a Sir. He turns away, takes a few wordless orders from other patrons at the bar and then lines up eight glasses. His next steps are rapid and meticulous, second nature. He runs his arm seamlessley along the top dousing each glass in hot water, and then empties all of them. Next comes the coffee, he fills all the cups in one fell swoop then plops sugar cubes into each, and free pours fine Irish Whiskey into the steaming cups. Finally, all the glasses are topped with a collar of whipping cream. Amy and I are sipping the most divine concoction within three minutes time.

The little Irish pick-me-up gives Amy and I a second wind of energy and we head along Beach Street in search of North Beach, better known as San Francisco’s Little Italy. We are absolutely amazed by the splendour and beauty of the residential architecture styles and stop every few houses to take a photo. When we finally reach North Beach, we are delighted by the district, it’s quaint and magical and both of us can see ourselves living here immediately. There are flower shops, boutiques, parks with people dozing in the quiet, restaurants and friendly faces all around us. After perusing the district we cut up through Chinatown and head back to the hotel to change before going out for the night. San Francisco has a really unique night life. There are still several hidden Speakeasy’s to visit that require advance bookings and passwords, the venues do a fantastic job of embracing their histories, bringing to life the secrecy and underworld associated with Prohibition. We have a delicious dinner at The Slanted Door and then go to a trendy little spot called Novella. It’s a literary-themed bar with drinks named after characters and book-lined walls. I immediately start geeking out over this place.

WINTER 2015

Our second day in San Francisco is spent in Union Square. Calling all shoppers, this is your stop. Union Square offers an abundance of boutique and luxury retail shops, art galleries, flagship hotels, restaurants, theatres and night clubs, all surrounding an urban park. Off the main square is a sweet little, allystyle street with squished buildings and bistro tables, it’s called Maiden Lane. This is where you will find Chanel, Theory and Hermès varietal of boutiques all lined up in a row. Amy and I are beyond thrilled that there is a women in costume singing Opera in the lane; she is absolutely brilliant at her art.

Bridge and the Painted Ladies at Alamo Square, better known to the children of the nineties as the park and houses from the introduction of the television sitcom Full House. From Alamo Square, we walk to the district of Haight-Ashbury.

For dinner we decide to go back to North Beach and try a place called the Stinking Rose, yes, you read that right. This place is garlic, garlic, garlic. The ceilings are all dripping with strands of it and every dish is saturated in it. We share pizza and pasta (and Mylanta) — relieved we won’t have to worry about smooching anybody when we leave!

Haight-Ashbury, or simply The Haight, really began to flourish post war in the 1950’s and continued to expand to its peak of popularity in 1967 during a time referred to historically as The Summer of Love. This was a summer when over 100,000 hippies congregated in the neighbourhood and it became the epicentre of the Hippie Revolution in North America. Today the neighbourhood maintains a very bohemian atmosphere. There are vintage shops and smoke shops with names like The Love of Ganesha where you can still purchase a little piece of the tie-dye, flower power era. Amy and I meander lazily in and out of shops and bookstores all the way down Haight Street to Golden Gate Park.

On our final day in the Bay City, we hit some very notorious hot spots; the Golden Gate

All too quickly it is time for us to bid adieu to the wondrous city of San Francisco. With

flowers in our hair, Bloody Mary’s in our bellies and the tune to Full House stuck in our heads, we hop on one of the iconic trolley cars, hang off the side and bomb back to Union Square and then, onward and upward, back home to British Columbia.

IMAGINE, GROWING UP WITH ENDLESS TIME TO BE CREATIVE — DIGGING IN THE CRAFT BOX EVERY DAY, TAKING ANYTHING YOU WANTED AND MAKING ANYTHING YOU WANTED by Jill Lang | arts columnist

ndeed Kim Newns grew up with the world of arts and craft as her oyster, learning, among other art forms, finger painting (which she still does) from her mother, who ran a pre-school out of their large home in Cobble Hill. Newns also spent considerable time with her father, who was a musician, taking acting and voice lessons and performing piano.

“I HAD AN AMAZING CHILDHOOD, BEING CREATIVE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A TOP PRIORITY.” Although Newns completed a Bachelor of Commerce from Mt. Allison University in New Brunswick and

the business of art fans her fiery flames, she’s most playful and relaxed painting and creating. Once she sits down and the first brush is lifted, there’s no stopping her. She works predominantly with acrylic and oil, and recently she painted her first water colour in ten years—her first ever lion painting, which I gave to my mother for her sixtieth birthday in Leo last year. Newns’ artistic influences include Emily Carr, Monet and Picasso, with landscapes and music being her favourite subjects to paint. “Growing up in such a musical household has given me the ability to really listen, feel and appreciate music,” Newns says. “You will see on your Janis Joplin painting where I was listening to ‘Me and Bobby McGee’ and where I was listening to her slower songs.”

You could say Newns makes musicians come to life. Perhaps we could call musical art her niche? At this point we could also call Newns my favourite artist, as the Beacon Hill Park-inspired A Duck Date decorates my walls with Janis. Louis Armstrong in his rocking chair could comfortably join the wall club, along with Girl from Impanema (in fact I want her singing at my wedding), and yes please, universe, a Kim Newns’ jazz shuffle!

Since 2011 Newns has had her artwork on display at Serious Coffee on Broad Street and Tin Roof in Cook Street Village. In March 2012, the Victoria Event Centre hosted Newns’ Debut Art Show, and she has participated in art demonstrations at various venues in Victoria including the LOOK show at the Bay Centre and Studio 30 Art Club. In July 2013, Newns hosted an art project at the Extreme Outreach Society’s Super Kid’s Camp for sixty 6-12 year olds, as well as coordinated the first youth arts show at the Arts Centre at Cedar Hill for the CACGV Art Jammers. Along with painting when the whim strikes her, Newns also regularly takes on commission projects.

Jane,

Dear

Dear Jane – I am a recently divorced woman in my late 40s who is re-entering the dating world for the first time in nearly 25 years. Things have really changed when it comes to dating and I am really feeling lost. Any advice on getting back on the horse, so to speak? Leanna V. Leanna, it’s normal to feel confused about how to re-enter the dating world, especially given the ways in which technology has altered this territory. I mean, really, what is this Tinder thing anyways?! All joking aside, to get the ball rolling, start by making a list of “deal breakers” and then narrow it down to approximately five things that are nonnegotiable. Secondly, decide which avenue(s) you will use to meet people. Some options include online websites, set-ups through friends, social/recreational groups, and matchmaking services of course. Do your research and choose the method that will work best for you. As an aside, keep in mind that paying for online sites and matchmakers do tend to have members who are more serious because they have invested money in the process. Finally, in the words of Nike “Just Do It!” Dating, itself, offers the best opportunity to discover what you like, what you loathe, and what kind of person is going to float your boat.

Dear Jane – I seem to be drawn to the wrong men, time after time. Maybe I need to find someone more like me. Is it really true that opposites attract? Lee M. I formulated a saying a few years ago that applies well here: “opposites attract but don’t last.” It’s normal to be drawn to people that are different from us—it’s exciting and offers opportunities to try new activities and evolve into more complex beings. The things that are different and seem so appealing at first, however, are often the same things that erode the relationship. So much so, in fact, that psychologists working in this area call these types of relationships “fatal attractions.” Thus, if you’re trying to find someone to spend the rest of your life with, then choose someone who lives like you. Don’t get me wrong, you don’t need to be identical but your overall values, goals, and lifestyle should correspond.

Starting with clean hair, brush your hair straight back (to the nape area) on the top and sides. Keep brushing until all hair is smooth, sleek and tangle-free. TIP: Tilting your head back just slightly will allow you to pull the hair very tight to the nape of your neck.

Being cautious to keep the hair neat, gather all your hair in your hands and pull it high to the top of your head, fasten with a hair tie and pull the ponytail taut. TIP: Pull the position of the ponytail higher than the top of your cheeks to slim the face and define cheekbones.

Take a strand of hair – between one half and one inch wide and wrap it flat around your hair tie to cover the elastic and provide that polished look. Either tuck in beneath or secure it with a bobby pin. TIP: Choose a width based on the thickness of your hair; thinner hair gets a narrow wrap with thicker hair getting a wider strand wrap.
