rieste, Italy is a little cosmopolitan hub located in the highest part of the Adriatic Sea in northeastern Italy. Nearly completely surrounded by Slovenia, this seaport city clambers carefully up a Karst Plateau from the lulling waves of the Adriatic. Due to its geographic location, Trieste offers visitor’s a delightful flavour of cultural movement, there is middle Europe to the north, Slovenia and the Balkans to the east, Italy and the Latin countries to the west and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Trieste is a charming city with a heterogeneous history. It flourished as a powerful centre of politics under the AustroHungarian Empire and was a producer of extraordinary literature, music and art. After World War one Trieste was annexed to Italy and the city lost its commercial influence. Today Trieste is defined by a palpable energy inspired by its peoples zest for life. Viennese architecture that is reminiscent of delicatessen cakes line streets that are otherwise filled with friendly faces and fresh sea breezes.

10

SPRING 2015

W H AT ’ S I N A N A M E It was Julius Caesar who first recorded this Mediterranean city’s name as Tergeste in his writings Commentarii de Bello Gallico (51 BC). The name Trieste is a derivation of the ancient name, Tergeste, which comes from the Venetic words “terg”, meaning market and “est”, meaning place.

W H AT T O D O Get a true feel for the city by beginning your visit with a trip to the Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia — the piazza is enclosed on three sides by ancient palatial buildings, and opens outward to the Adriatic. Take a leisurely stroll through the streets of Borgo Teresiano. Be sure to stop at one of the many literary cafes for a cup, Trieste has been unofficially titled Italy’s coffee capital because of how spectacular the beans they brew are. One of the most remarkable sites to visit in Trieste is the wondrous Castle Miramare, which splays elegantly over the sea and conjures romantic fantasies of princes and happily ever after. Do not leave without trying a cup of GROM gelato.

This is JEWEL, the first of four special edition capsule collections he created. These golden sandals bring back the most iconic styles that represent both the designer and brand.

“EVERY SHOE I CREATE BEGINS WITH AN IDEA. SOMETIMES THAT IDEA TAKES THE FORM OF A DREAM OR A FEELING. SOMETIMES IT’S A MEMORY. fter reviewing applications from thirteen emerging B.C fashion designers, NICHE magazine’s $15,000 Emerging Designer Sponsorship went to Alex S. Yu, a talented young dynamo who presented an 11-piece Spring/Summer 2015 collection at Vancouver Fashion Week on September 17, 2014. Closing the evening on Emerging Designer night, the show literally brought the house down, with a standing ovation for this talented young B.C designer. W H AT WA S Y O U R I N S P I R AT I O N FOR THIS COLLECTION?

T

he inspiration for my SS2015 collection came from two sources. One was my experience of living in East London while I studied there. East London is a very vibrant, young neighbourhood that houses many upcoming and poor artists, designers and students. I was inspired by the street art that they created in the forms of graffiti, sculpture and collage, all over the neighbourhood and how they chose to use such a vibrant form of art to project their feelings of oppression and rage towards life and the government. The other source of inspiration was my favourite children’s book author, Dr. Seuss. I was inspired by the colours, shapes and optimistic mood of the books. The biggest challenge was actually linking all the pieces together using the two contrasting sources of inspirations. I chose to merge those two inspirations and designed pieces from my imagination after being inspired.

N I C H E fashion

W H AT A R E Y O U WORKING ON NOW?

I

am currently in Taiwan working on my FW2015 collection, which will be shown at Vancouver Fashion Week in March 2015. It will be a bigger collection than my debut and it will be a collection that is more varied and wearable than my previous collection yet retaining my signature whimsical, sort of naive, rebellious feelings. The collection is inspired by one of my favourite movies, Mean Girls, and my experience in secondary school, focusing on all the clichés and stereotypes that existed back then.”

HOW DID THE NICHE SPONSORSHIP HELP YOUR CAREER?

A

fter VFW, I had gained some local recognition. I held a pop up shop shortly after the fashion show to sell pieces from my SS15 collection that I showed, and all products were sold out within a day and I got quite a bit of orders from new clients that saw my show. I also received a lot of local and international media attention including Vogue UK, Elle Italia, Glamour UK, Glamour Brasil, Vancouver Sun, The Province, and a lot of blogs and social media mentions. I also got featured on the cover of a local Chinese newspaper, City Style. Another benefit was the many contacts from stylists to pull the collection for photo shoots including internationally. I flew to Tokyo to do an extensive photo shoot with a London/ Tokyo based stylist. Some celebrities and artists from Taiwan also borrowed some of my pieces for media appearances. Following Vancouver Fashion Week, I was invited by New York Fashion Week to show for FW2015, but will not be attending due to lack of funding. I will, however, be returning to Vancouver in March to show at Vancouver Fashion Week again.” 26

M

iuccia Prada was born on May 10, 1949, in one of the world’s most infamous fashion capitals: Milan, Italy. With two older siblings, Miuccia was the baby of the family. However, from an early age she proved to be a woman of determination, who always wanted to be innovative and original. She went to university for a Political Science degree, eventually receiving her PhD. Miuccia was born in a period of difficulty in Italy and it was her dream to make a change not only for her country but also for the women of Italy. As a strong feminist, she began her career in politics, joining Italy’s Communist Party. However, this career was short lived, and her dream of making a difference would be in the form of Prada’s fashion house.

n 1970, Miuccia Prada joined the family business, started by her grandfather Mario Prada in 1913, alongside her mother, Luisa Prada and in 1978, she inherited it. With no formal fashion training, she took a family run luggage business and turned it into an empire that is recognizable by all today. This could not have been possible without the help of her then business partner, and now husband, Patrizio Bertelli. Patrizio began working with Miuccia as her business advisor when she took the business over, and with his help, she was able to use her own creativity to change the house of Prada, as we know it.

SPRING 2015

Miuccia began designing simple black nylon handbags and backpacks that were well made with understated labeling. This idea of an antistatus bag took some time to gain popularity, especially with competing labels like Louis Vuitton. However, in 1985, the classic Prada handbag became an overnight sensation and in opposition to the logo heavy style dominating the fashion world at the time. It was known for its practicality, which went hand in hand with its sleek lines and Italian craftsmanship. This bag became symbolic for the House of Prada through its offhanded aura of luxury. This idea of subdued fashion is what sets Miuccia apart from the rest of the fashion industry. “I want to make clothes that are beautiful of course, but also clothes that are interesting and considered and intelligent and not out of place.” Miuccia Prada’s fearlessness in trying new styles was seen in her first ready to wear collection, sent down the runway in 1989, with dropped waistlines and narrow belts. The fashion world took notice of Prada’s clean lines, opulent fabrics and basic colours seen on the catwalk.

s the House of Prada put their name on the fashion map of the world, Miuccia wanted a more accessible womenswear line and Miu Miu was born. Named after her own nickname, Miu Miu was inspired by all things Miuccia. The line was modeled after her own personal wardrobe and has an actress cult following. Up until this year Miu Miu has yet to branch out past clothing and accessories, however this year they will be launching their first ever fragrance.

SPRING 2015

For Miuccia Prada and her husband Patrizio Bertelli, the House of Prada is something they have nurtured together from the day Miuccia inherited it from her family. This gives it a true Italian feel, making it a truly Italian brand, passed through the family. Miuccia never strays away from the look she knows and loves personally, and knows that her customers will love as well. Prada’s originality has made it one of the fashion world’s most influential fashion houses. Throughout the 1990’s both Prada and Miu Miu’s lines grew in popularity and Miuccia Prada awarded a number of awards for her role in the House of Prada. In 2012, Miuccia was honoured by having her work showcased at the Metropolitan Museum of Art alongside fashion legend Elsa Schiaparelli. This exhibition shows the influence Miuccia Prada has reached with her work and will continue to do so.

OF FASHION

Women often don’t want to admit that they like fashion. And yet fashion enthralls everyone, from the taxi driver to the mega-intellectual. I have often asked myself why this is. I don’t know the answer. What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today when human contacts go so fast. Fashion is instant language.

Perusing the Pintxoz in starry Basque Country

an Sebastian, Spain — In this glitzy, seaside resort town in Basque Country, locals in black berets mingle with tourists along the narrow, stone streets edged by the gleaming Bay of La Concha, just 12 miles from the border with France. You know it’s a mecca for foodies because there are currently five Michelin-starred restaurants in this city of fewer than 200,000 people, including Arzak and Akelare, both honoured with the premier three stars for 2013. But you don’t have to drop a bundle and reserve your spot far in advance to explore some of the finest Basque cuisine. That’s because you’re in the birthplace of the pintxo (prononunced pin-cho) and there’s no shortage of places where you can sample this ultimate finger food. Pintxo bars aren’t as upscale as the starred restaurants, of course. But they offer an appealing gastronomic experience that melds tradition and innovation with the Basque love of fresh, local ingredients and the camaraderie that comes from sharing food and drink in a casual atmosphere with friends and family.

is about 60 miles from Bilbao, the largest city in northern Spain's Basque Autonomous Community, which is home to the iconic Guggenheim Museum, and where there is no shortage of pintxos. A culinary excursion can easily include both cities with easy connections via car, bus or train, and enough pintxos to fill your stomach.

Bare Essentials Lingerie Experience The Difference….

P

intxos are not as large as tapas, the small plates of Spanish cuisine that have become ubiquitous across the U.S., and are designed to be just a bite or two, often served on just a napkin, not a plate. And while visiting a pintxo bar can be a casual outing, there’s a definite style of pintxo dining that locals practice and travelers would be wise to observe, a kind of pintxo pub crawl, if you will. Here are two pieces of advice — offered by Gabriella Ranalli of Tenedor Tours, which takes tourists on culinary excursions in San Sebastian — that will help you have the best experience and will keep you from being labeled a tourist.

1. Eat only one pintxo at each bar as each has its specialty. Savour it, along with a glass of wine, and move on to the next place.

2. Most pintxos are served on napkins,

and the way you dispose of the napkins will mark you either as a local or an outsider. When you are finished, don’t leave the napkin on the bar or look for a garbage container. To demonstrate true Basque style, raise the napkin into the air and throw it to the ground under the bar. Don’t just drop it like a kid feeding vegetables to the dog. True locals fling to the floor with flair, take one last swig of wine, and move on to the next place.

If you go: Ranalli’s Tenedor Tours offers culinary-themed experiences for travelers to the Basque region including cooking classes, market trips and visits to Basque cooking clubs. She’ll even take you on a walking tour of her favorite pintxo bars in San Sebastian.

If you prefer to go it on your own, here are some pintxo bars in the city’s old town that are worth a visit:

Borda Berri on Calle Fermin for stewed beef cheeks.

Txepetxa on Calle Pescaderia for the best anchovies in town.

Bar Nestor on Calle Pescaderia for the best tortilla, a Spanish egg dish, not a Mexican wrap.

n San Sebastian, you must also stop in at the Hotel Maria Cristina, a grande dame extraordinaire, if not for a stay then at least to savour a gin and tonic, one of the hotel bar’s specialties. An overnight would be a splurge for sure, but it’s extremely lux and in a great location. Whenever I’m in Spain, I try to stay at one of the government-run paradores, refurbished historical buildings turned into hotels. About a half hour’s drive from San Sebastian is the Parador de Hondarribia, one of my favourites. It’s a 10th Century castle with an especially nice feel with views of France. Hondarribia is a fishing village, a picturesque town with stone streets, homey restaurants, specialty shops and great water views. A midweek night in April goes for 181 Euros (about $245) but the paradores website offers many packages that are discounted.

In Bilbao, the Guggenheim Museum is a modern art-lover’s dream. But even if that’s not your thing, the museum is engaging and surprising in the way space is used. It’s definitely worth a visit. A good place to stay is the Gran Hotel Silken Domine, which is just across the street from the museum. It’s a luxury spot with a modern art feel and a bit of whimsy in a great location. Rates for a midweek night in April start at 161 Euros, about $218.

by Gracie Andoque | beauty columnist

ou’ve taken the time to carefully plan out one of the most important days of your life. Now, it’s time to think about you and your skin. Like your eternal love, the memory of the day and wedding pictures will last forever. To make sure you put your best face forward, the NICHE experts have compiled our “what not to do the weeks before your wedding day” tips. You can thank us later.

1.

DON’T EXPERIMENT Resist the urge to try something new. It may seem indulgent, but new products with foreign ingredients can provoke allergic reactions. Unless you start well in advance, stick to what you (and your skin) know the two weeks leading up to your big day. If necessary, include a visit to the dermatologist at the early planning stages, to get onto a skin regimen that is best suited for your skin.

48

SPRING 2015

2.

S K I P T H E S PA Sure it’s fun to visit the spa with your bridesmaids the day before your wedding, until one of you breaks out in hives! Facials are amazing but also unpredictable, and skin needs a period of recuperation. In the days leading up to the wedding, stick to your usual beauty routine. The only other things that should be introduced at this late date are wedding necessities - hair, nails and makeup. Everything else should be at least two weeks prior.

3.

WA X I N G W O E S Waxing can lead to redness, bumps and skin irritation, especially if you’re a wax virgin. For legs, bikini and underarm areas, begin three months before your wedding day to build skin tolerance. For a more gentle approach to facial hair removal, opt for threading a week before the wedding day.

4.

DRINK UP! Increasing water consumption will keep blemishes away, plump out skin to reduce fine lines and keep your face and body hydrated and luminous. Keep a water bottle at the office, gym and at home for hydration on the go.

5.

6.

It’s easier said but it CAN be done. Stress causes hormonal imbalances which can lead to breakouts and skin imperfections. Make sure to take time for yourself. We recommend the Mindfulness App on iTunes ($2.29).

Sleep is a beautiful thing. Your eyes, your skin and your entire being will thank you! You’ll feel energized plus you’ll look great in your wedding photos, sans the eye bags.

WEDDING DAY O

by Calvyn Cass

ur day was the best unplanned wedding of 2014, I am almost certain. With four days’ notice, we somehow managed to pull off the most magical day of our lives. It started at a little ice cream shop on Robson Street on Friday July 10th! I turned to Michael and casually said, “Feel like getting married this weekend?” Without any hesitation,

50

SPRING 2015

he smiled at me and calmly replied, “Sure”. Having been engaged for a year and a half, I would hardly say no one saw it coming, but it certainly caught everyone off guard. Luckily, everything fell into place. Our friends offered suggestions on locations and a list of commissioners was

readily at hand as someone I knew had recently wed as well. I called up my friend, Heather March, and asked if she could get me a room filled with white flowers in two days to which she answered with brief silence, and then, “how do you feel about hydrangeas?” Before that day was over, everything was set.

Our plan was always to wear colour, so it was no surprise to our family and friends when we asked everyone attending to wear white, although there were a few fashionistas that needed a little convincing. All that was left to do was find our suits and on Sunday night, with just thirty minutes to spare before the store closed, we went to Holt Renfrew. Michael and I walked directly into Tom Ford; both of us sharing a dream to marry in Tom Ford suits.

A GAY SUMMERS DAY WEDDING... IT WAS AS IF THE SUN WAS OUR SPOTLIGHT AND WE WERE THE STARS OF A BEAUTIFULLY CAST DREAM. On July 14, 2014 (also my mother’s birthday), I married Michael, the love of my life. My good friend Sara took charge and made sure everyone knew what was happening and where to be. She was somehow able to arrange an impromptu reception at the Belgard Kitchen, who was so kind to host us. All in all, we are a couple of lucky guys — grateful to have our spontaneous wedding day become our perfect wedding day.”

he Haut-Marais district of Paris’s third Arrondissement is undeniably one of the city’s most scrumptious offerings. The neighbourhood is a delightful mash-up of architectural treasures, juxtaposed by haphazard streets, trolling with patrons in new-age designer threads. Keeping with the concept of old meets chic, is Christian Lacroix’s Hotel du Petit Moulin. Tucked humbly inside a charming 17th century building with the façade of a bakery — or Boulangerie en Francias — is a gateway into the ingenious imagination of Lacroix. Hotel du Petit Moulin is one of the eccentric fashion mogul’s most successful presentations. Seventeen rooms, each unique, each equally audacious, all pulled from the fantastical mind of Lacroix. The hotel is a theatrical concoction of colour, pattern, artwork (including sketches by Lacroix) and objects. Each room has a defined atmosphere, a distinctive colour palette, and is accented by mismatched textures. Rooms very in character, but whether you’re tucking into a suite with wonderland vibes, or one with a more severe palatial feel, all are equally ornate and spectacularly grand. Bathrooms are adorned with the finest amenities and Hermès bath products — but of course!

THINGS TO DO • While you’re in Paris mon amour, walk out the door and fall in love — whether with a dazzling French man, a baguette from one of the countless bakeries, or a glass of wine at one of the many delectable restaurants, the choice is yours! • Paris is absolutely bursting with history, and the Marias district doesn’t fall short. This neighbourhood is where the great Knights of Templar set up shop in the 13th century and was the main aristocratic district of Paris. The ancient architecture is a truly breathtaking sight and there are an abundance of museums in the area to explore — one of which being the Pablo Picasso Museum. • Find your way to rues Charlot, Poitou, Bretagne and Saintonge for boutique shopping and art gallery strolling. Isabel Marant’s flagship boutique is located on the Saintonge, keep a sharp eye out for it as the shop is hidden within the exterior of an old weathered pub. • A quick 1.5 km jaunt from the hotel is the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral, sure to impress travelers of all tastes.

BRASS is the new BLACK

T

here’s good reason why brass has been worn as adornment for centuries. Whether polished, oxidized, hammered, or raw, it’s best known for its workability and warm, rich tones. Fortunately, this next-level metal is all over the Spring/Summer 2015 Ready-to-Wear runways, with designers showcasing current trends ranging from the sartorial resurgence of the 1970’s to modern, sophisticated chic. Céline presented practical options from your head to your toes (literally). Polished brass hair clips, handbag hardware, and shoe details glimmered, while both Gucci and Saint Laurent showed bohemian-inspired circular brass belt buckles, cinched at the natural waist. As for this season’s favourite brass statement necklace, I am torn between Pucci and Tom Ford. Both necklaces are opulently set with semi-precious stones and hang well below the collarbone. For an understated take on this trend, look to Zaleska’s La Paz necklace, featuring reclaimed brass and Herkimer Diamond quartz. With the price of gold at an all-time high, I suggest investing in quality brass pieces as a fabulous way to update your wardrobe without feeling the effects of a seasonal splurge. Rest assured: brass is back and here to stay.

ver the years, the master bathroom has transformed from a utilitarian space to a luxury room that is important to the wellbeing of the homeowner… and for good reason! We work hard, life moves at breakneck speed and at some point, we need to hide from the world and recharge.

Dornbracht MEM - Cyprum finish

Culturing Life

If you have 2015 earmarked to redecorate or renovate your master bath, here are the top trends in luxurious bathrooms, with women in mind.

1) TACTILE TILES White subway tiles are being replaced with patterned tiles in a variety of elegant styles and colours. Remember that your choice will be a long term commitment, so choose carefully and with the future in mind.

2) MUCH MORE MARBLE Ladies, how much do we love Cararra marble? It is often too expensive for large spaces but when used smart and sparingly in a master bathroom, marble can be the luxurious finishing tough to your dream retreat. If budget is a concern, use marble just on the vanity top.

3) SENSUAL SHAPES Watch for the silhouettes of tubs, vanities and even fixtures to take on a more curvaceous and feminine shape — moving away from boxy, straight lines of the past ten years.

4) OLD IS NEW AGAIN Vintage style taps, shower heads, and claw foot bathtubs are making a big comeback. Think Parisian inspired vanities and balloon back chairs that add softness and design interest.

The modern woman wants a modern bathroom, but it needs to also be functional. Dreamy is great but if the tub isn’t big enough to soak in and the shower doesn’t have a hand-held option for shaving our legs, pretty gets old really fast. We girls want it all, and it is possible to have comfort, functionality and luxury. Floating vanity units and frameless glass showers will continue to be very popular and are strong for resale value. However, female homeowners have a growing partiality for bathrooms that are large enough to include furniture (think about converting that spare room that never gets used) as well as antique dressers and harvest tables, retrofitted to create a modern day vanity with double or even triple vessel sinks. If you are short on space, consider a wall mounted toilet that gives the illusion of a lot more floor space.

The Root of Your Hair Problem

s our taste for all things trendy differs from season to season, so does our impulse to change our hairstyle; which often means colouring, harsh chemicals, straightening, blow drying and teasing. Hair is the crowning glory of every woman. Am I right, ladies? One thing that is always trendy is...

We may get great results that turn out to be temporary. The bad news? The years of bleaching, dying, overprocessing and chemically treating have wreaked havoc and imbalance on your crowning glory. The scalp is considered the groundwork for healthy hair. It is anatomically comprised of thousands of follicles responsible for hair growth. Each follicle has its own blood supply and sebaceous glands to keep each strand nourished and thriving. Believe it or not, its upkeep requires cleansing, moisturizing and exfoliating, just as the skin on our face needs. This promotes healthier hair by keeping the scalp’s natural oils balanced and maintains blood circulation.

n most weekends, downtown Vancouver’s neon-lit Granville Street teems with giddy young partiers ever on the verge of their next vomitus episode. But ask discerning locals where to drink and if they like you they’ll tell you to avoid ‘the Strip.’ Vancouverites have a hotlist of alternative favoured night-out haunts, from craft beer charmers to under-the-radar dive bars and from tiny live stages to steaming dance floors. All are within easy reach so long as you know where to go.

6:00PM Home of Canada’s best craft beer scene, new microbreweries are currently popping-up in Vancouver every few weeks. But despite the frothy clamour, one ale-maker stands out from the crowd. Brassneck Brewery concocted more than 50 different beers in its first six months (opened October 2013) and continues to hook drinkers with an ever-changing chalkboard of intriguing libations with names like Stockholm Syndrome and Magician’s Assistant. Arrive early for a seat in the tasting bar the holes punched in the woodplank walls reveal the brewery beyond and couple your sampler flight with a cured sausage from the jars on the counter. Still hungry? There’s often several food trucks parked outside and you’re encouraged to bring your grub into the bar.

One of Vancouver’s most eclectic art spaces, there’s lateopening on the first Thursday of every month here plus regular nighttime happenings from artist talks to burlesque-themed sketch classes. But the best way to meet local artsytypes is to grab a few drinks at a gratis show opening. New exhibitions kick-off monthly and there’s always something worth rubbing your chin at recent shows have covered embarrassing teenager art, disembodied dolls’ head paintings and clever designs applied to bike saddles and beer bottles.

8:30PM Hop on the number 3 transit bus outside the gallery and you’ll be downtown in 10 minutes. But you’re not heading for the Strip. Tucked above a 7-Eleven, the sticky-tabled Railway Club launched as a respite for train workers in the 1930s is Vancouver’s best oldschool bar. Now a laid-back, all-embracing hangout for everyone from red-nosed old lags to pennypinching students plus those easily-tempted office slaves who couldn’t resist dropping by for an afterwork libation (three hours ago) there’s a hole-in-wall food hatch and a generous array of great local-made booze: hoppy Fat Tug IPA recommended. But the Rail’s main attraction? A small, sweaty stage with a near-nightly roster of bands of the emerging and/or obscure variety.

PUB 340

NARROW LOUNGE

340 Cambie Street Downtown www.pub340.ca

Corner of Main Street and 3rd Avenue Mount Pleasant www.narrowlounge.com

10:00PM

MIDNIGHT

The frayed-around-the-edges Rail flirts with the dive bar look, but stale-beer-smelling Pub 340 is the real deal. A 10-minute downhill walk away, it’s home to a gaggle of glassy-eyed regulars during the day where else can you find dirt-cheap booze without a side-order of communicable diseases? while a younger, hipper crew rolls in as the night unfolds. But few are here for the greasy floors and grubby beerhall ambiance. Instead, they’re taking their pints to the front-of-house pinball room. For a dollar a game, you’ll have your choice of 11 tables, including the ever-popular White Water and the bellsand-whistles Wizard of Oz. Need to rest your flipping fingers? There’s also a bonus console programmed with 1980s video games.

Main Street noses uphill as you aim for the intersection with 3rd Avenue and a red light bulb mounted above an otherwise anonymous doorway. When the light is on, it means the Narrow is open. Descend the graffiti-lined stairway and you’ll suddenly emerge in a cozy, subterranean speakeasy no bigger than a train carriage. Grab a perch at the glowing bar and order from the menu of classic cocktails and trad martinis Old Fashioned recommended or snag a tiny table beneath the antler horns and garage sale artworks. One of Main’s best hidden hangouts, there’s also a secret Mexicanthemed garden out back complete with pinatas, painted picnic tables and a kitsch Jesus shrine flickering with candles. Hungry? Order the Guinness mac and cheese for a late-night fuel-up.

BRICKHOUSE 730 Main Street Chinatown

11:00PM Move swiftly along Hastings Street, then turn right onto Main Street’s Chinatown stretch: you’re keeping your eyes peeled for the faded awning of the Brickhouse bar. Echoing a laid-back 1970s rec-room, its eye-popping interior is lined with dog-eared books, movie posters and neon-bright fish tanks twitching with aquatic life. Jam-packed with vintage junk from 7UP fridges to dusty Bakelite radios, it’s the physical extension of owner Leo Chow’s eclectic mind. ‘We’re 60% British pub and 40% American tavern,’ he’s fond of saying as he pours well-priced drafts for the friendly young hipsters and international backpackers who regard the room, with its sagging sofas and everbusy pool table, as their personal den.

SPRING 2015

FOX CABARET 2321 Main Street Mount Pleasant www.foxcabaret.com

1:00AM You’ve now looped back to Brassneck territory but it’s long-past the brewery’s closing time. Luckily, there’s still plenty to do nearby. The popular Biltmore Cabaret (www.biltmorecabaret.com) once had a nightlife monopoly in this part of town its dancefloor, band nights and burlesque shows are still hot items but a challenger arrived on the scene in early 2014. Formerly one of North America’s lastremaining porn cinemas, Fox Cabaret’s new owners have transformed (and fully pressure-washed) the venue, ditching the dodgy flicks in favour of live music, DJ nights and events like Ice Cream Social dance hops. Far friendlier than the characterless Granville Strip clubs, it’s the perfect spot to end your alternative Vancouver night out.

oy do I love it when the snow starts to melt and I can finally begin to feel my feet and fingers defrost from the bitterness of winter. So when spring is here, I jump into it like a giant leap frog! Spring is always about freshness and vibrancy, where we finally get a chance to strip off the layers, show some skin and feel pretty. Toss off those winter toques and let your hair down because this season, the ever evolving time machine is taking us back to the 1970’s. Yep you guessed it, we’re talking platforms, bell bottoms and lots of fringe. Get ready for a relaxed, vintage inspired hippified season, Put on your best Bohemian frock, turn up the Joni Mitchell and maybe get ready for Coachella. Yes, I love the hippie look and the laid back vibe, but what I love about this season’s look is the HAIR! Lazy girls, rejoice! hair department and that makes me happier than a camel on Wednesday!

People often compliment me on my hair and although I am so grateful that I was blessed with a good head of locks, it’s not without problems. I naturally have curly hair and getting that polished, shiny look comes at a price. It has taken years off my life when I add up the amount of time I have spent blowing, straightening and curling, so I welcome with open arms the new trend of MESSY, UNKEMPT DO’S! Basically, all the look entails is making your hair look casual in any style you want. So goodbye to hot tools (for at least a little while). Easy as the look sounds, there are always things that one needs to do in order to make that transition from winter hair to spring, I asked my amazing stylist, celebrity hairdresser Joy Mitchell of thejoyofhair.com if she would give us a few tips and trends for this season: Mary Zilba: Joy, so many women wear long hair extensions, do you think this trend will continue this year?

JM: Mary that is a great question that I get asked often. I strongly believe that Ombre will continue to be in because of the representation of child-like hair; we all love that sun kissed look. The key is keeping it natural and blended. No more dip dye! For so long people have shied away from their natural hair colour, but this season it is welcomed back! I love adding highlights to hair and having it compliment the natural tone of the hair. MZ: What tip do you give to women transitioning from drab winter hair to getting locks ready for spring? JM: The key is to do what makes you feel good! It’s always nice to lighten up your hair in the spring, but most importantly because we are all unique, make sure your hair compliments your skin tone, eye colour, and face shape, and you will be good to go! If you are looking to grow your hair longer or add extensions this season but are nervous, it might not suit your face, I suggest adding in complimentary framing layers to enhance your facial features. Remember, healthy hair is the best hair!

Joy Mitchell: Looking at this years runway trends for spring, the common look has been long, flowy hair, similar to the 70’s. Women will likely continue to use extensions to create this look. Some extension tips are to make sure the colour matches perfectly by always checking them in the natural light. Also, make sure to get them cut in with your hair to create a seamless blend so they won’t be noticed. MZ: I have always loved the ombre look, but have been feeling like maybe we take me M A R Y Z I L B A is a singer, songwriter, television personality, up a notch to blonder. activist and mother of three boys. by Jane Carstens | relationship columnist

Need help demystifying the dating process? Jane Carstens answers your questions and shares some insightful and useful relationship tips.

Dear Jane – What do you think about blind dates? I am single again, and others keep trying to fix me up. Any tips? Barb L. Dear Barb: If by “blind date” you mean an evening out with Stevie Wonder then I say go for it sister! If, alternatively, you are referring to the kind of date on which you walk into a situation completely clueless about someone’s personality and/or appearance then I’d say maybe that isn’t such a great idea. If your friends are eager to set you up, I think you should be open to the opportunity. You may want to make sure that both parties involved (both you and your potential date) have gotten photos and some background information before actually agreeing to meet and going on a date.

ClosetCrow.com Beautiful clothes should be loved again

Dear Jane – I am thinking about going on a singles cruise in May. Is this a good way to meet single men? Joan M. If you are thinking of travelling on an organized singles “Love Boat”, first thing I would ask is what age range the cruise is geared towards; cruise travelers are usually seniors. Single/mingle type activities can be great fun as you will meet others, both male and female to hang out with, but if you are looking for single men in your age range make sure you get down to specifics before setting sail, and definitely have a mindset of having fun.

TIP: For darker nail lacquer colours, give each nail a generous dab, wait 5-10 seconds and then wipe off effortlessly.

Clip nails based on your shape preference. Oval shaped nails are easy to keep and universally flattering, while fresh, short squares are great for rocking a bold lacquer colour. Perfect your nail edges by filing and smooth uneven surfaces with a nail buffer. TIP: File in one direction only to reduce damage, beginning from the outer edge towards the centre of the nail.

Care for cuticles by skipping the nippers! Instead, soak hands and nails in a cuticle lotion or oil and then gently push back cuticles. TIP: For best results, use a simple wooden cuticle stick.

Prep and pamper hands and fingernails by exfoliating with a gentle sugar scrub. Focus on the fingertips as well as the surrounding area of the nails. Remove dusty and grime beneath the nails using soapy water and a gentle nail brush. TIP: Make sure nails and hands are clean and thoroughly towel dried before reapplying.

NINE SHOW AND TELL Spring is the most popular season to decorate or redesign a room. Make this the year that you infuse your space with soul, surround yourself with beautiful things that you love to look at, and create a unique room that shows off your distinctive style and tells your story.

I like my house to be unique to me. Sure, I’ve bought plenty of things out of a catalog, but the way I put them together in my home is special. You might have bought your sofa at a major department store, but the rug you found at the flea market is so unique, it takes your room from ‘carbon copy’ to ‘simply yours’ in no time. - N AT E B E R K U S INTERIOR DESIGNER
