AWAY P

by Chelsea Forman | travel columnist

reserved in time by the rich salt that the town is renowned for, Hallstatt is an idyllic and ancient treasure that hugs the south-western shore of the Hallstätter Sea. Located in upper Austria, Hallstatt is in the Salzkammergut resort region of the country. The town’s old-world charm is unprecedented. There are layers of homes five to six hundred years old that tumble down the alpine coastline to the glass water below. Hallstatt is considered to be among the oldest, stillinhabited villages in Europe and it is unquestionably one of the most picturesque.

10

FALL 2014

W H AT ’ S I N A N A M E ? Hallstatt was named after the prehistoric salt deposits mined in the local mountains. Meaning “Place of Salt”, people have been coming to Hallstatt as far back as 7,000 B.C. to collect salt. The town’s salt mines are among the oldest mines in the entire world and launched Hallstatt into a long and lasting legacy of great prosperity.

W H AT T O D O Start your stay in Hallstatt with a ride up the mountain in the Funicular; the views are absolutely spectacular and will perfectly showcase the splendour of the region in its fullest and finest glory. At the top you can explore Rudolf ’s Tower which was built in 1282 as a defense for the mine workers, follow that with a half day tour of the ancient salt mines. Back down in town, hit the Bräugasthof restaurant for lunch, grab a pint and try some of the delicious Reinanke (whitefish), caught on Lake Hallstatt and served the same day. Walk along the only road that winds through Hallstatt and uncover the fairytale wonder of the stacked timber architecture and city square. Make your way to the cemetery where each grave has its own stunning flower garden. Because of the lack of land, over 1200 bodies have been cycled through the cemetery and into the nearby Bone House in the basement of Saint Michaels Chapel. After ten to fifteen years in the ground bones are dug up, painted decoratively to the family’s request, and moved to the Bone House.

IT’S A MAD, MAD [WOMEN’S] WORLD 22

FALL 2014

ICON

Celebrating the WOMEN of MAD MEN by Shannon Houston | celebrity columnist

T

he series finale of Mad Men is looming. Don, Roger, Pete — you guys are great. Really, you are. But the women of Mad Men are kind of a huge deal. As the great Waka Flocka Flame would say if he were tuning in to the AMC show (and if we were back in 2010), Peggy, Betty, and Joan go hard in the paint. In anticipation of another great season for these women, here are just a few reasons we’re all going to have a difficult time letting go of Elisabeth Moss, Christina Hendricks, and January Jones on Mad Men. WE’RE GONNA NEED MORE PEGGY OLSONS, PLEASE Any conversation about the women of Mad Men has to begin with the incomparable Peggy Olson. Peggy Olson is the answer to practically everything every feminist with a television set has been asking for since the dawn of feminism and television sets. Now that she is here, this statement can be made in full confidence. We don’t need more women on television. We need more Peggy Olsons. To say that Elisabeth Moss’ performance has stolen the show would be putting it lightly. Jon Hamm’s Don Draper has become iconic, but Peggy Olson is complex and revolutionary in ways that Draper simply is not (and, arguably, is not meant to be). From the moment she handed that ‘basket of kisses’ over to Freddy Rumsen, to the time she had way too much fun researching ‘The Rejuvenator,’ all the way up until she slayed Draper himself when she walked into a boardroom with an enormous Heinz ketchup bottle on a poster, Peggy Olson has consistently proven that she goes beyond the scope. She goes hard, and for that we thank her. We don’t need more women taking their clothes off on television, for whatever reason--titillation, feminism, plot. We need more Peggy Olsons.

N I C H E lifestyle

We need more versions of that one scene in ‘Waldorf Stories’ where Peggy Olson takes off her clothes to call Stan Rizzo’s bluff, and then proceeds to discuss the Vick’s account. It was one of the only times in the history of women taking off their clothes on television that actually, truly meant something. It meant, I’m calling you out — liberals, and nudists, and feminists, and everyone. You don’t really want to be naked and free, and if for a moment someone gave it to you, you wouldn’t know what to do with it. Well, we should probably let Peggy speak for herself:

‘I CAN WORK LIKE THIS. LET’S GET LIBERATED.’ We don’t need more fearless, strong women on television.

WOMEN of MAD

We need more versions of that one scene where Peggy Olson finally quits in ‘The Other Woman,’ just after Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce lands the coveted Jaguar account. She is simultaneously strong and confident and terrified. But mainly terrified.

32 year old American actress from California, who has played the role of Peggy Olson since 2007. Also known for her roles as Zoey Bartlet (The West Wing, 1999-2006) and Robin Griffin (Top of the Lake miniseries, 2013).

In this moment — and in many others on the show — Peggy is not a fierce, independent woman. There’s no, real empowering GIF that could be created out of this moment, and there is not a Beyoncé song in the world that could explain to us the magnitude of this scene. Peggy has had her fair share of bad ass moments and so has Don, but this isn’t it for either of them. This is a moment of weakness. Even as she’s doing the right thing, the adult thing, the feminist thing, it’s killing her! And even though it’s problematic to say this — even though this is not the defining moment of Peggy Olson — watching her become the only woman to truly bring Don Draper to his knees in a real, please-don’t-leave, can’t-let-go-ofyour-hand way is deeply satisfying to at least one feminist in this world. (That would be me.) We don’t agree with her all of the time. Some of us still cannot get over the fact that biologically she’s a mother, but in reality her child has no 24

FALL 2014

place in her life. There was that time when she invited Dawn to her house and they shared that awkward moment, when Peggy — if only for a second — became that young, purseclutching white woman. She didn’t end up taking her purse out of the room, but she damn sure thought about it. Peggy Olson is not a superhero. She is not a god among men (though it takes everything in me not to call her that). In truth, she’s really ‘just’ a very well-written television character. But the writers took it upon themselves to turn her into a representation of so many other issues. So Peggy functions as this double signifier of change. As Peggy Olson on Mad Men represents the changing times for women in the 1960s, Elisabeth Moss playing Peggy Olson represents an evolution of representations of women in contemporary media. She’s not the new Don Draper. She’s Peggy Olson.

WOMEN of MAD

37 year old American actress from South Dakota, who has played the role of Betty Draper since 2007. Also known for her roles as Cadence (American Wedding – 2003), Elizabeth Harris (Unknown – 2011) and Emma Frost (X-Men: First Class – 2011).

In Defense of Betty Draper Oh, January Jones. Is that you? Or is that Betty Draper/Francis being all vapid and ridiculous? The world may never know. Okay, here is the truth, for me, about the second Mrs. Draper. If you pay close attention, she is crazy — in a way that she never would have revealed to her therapist — and it makes her whole existence invaluable. Or as Buzzfeed once eloquently put it, there have been at least thirteen moments when Betty Draper didn’t give a f*#k. One of the first times we learned this was during Season One. We all remember the pigeon incident.

This is what happens when you live next door to the Drapers, and you casually threaten their family dog. Betty Draper will shoot your beloved pigeons down one by one, whilst Bobby Vinton plays in the background. Betty Draper will also cut off a lock of her hair and give it to your young son, then slap you in the supermarket if you call her on it. (Remember Helen Bishop?) Because Betty Draper is nuts. Then there was that time when she took her crazy to a whole new level during a conversation with second husband Henry Francis. The Season Six premiere ‘rape joke’ heard ‘round the world (described by creator Matt Weiner as proof that Betty is not bland, but rather, playfully perverse) had us all wondering if we really just heard what we thought we heard. Did Betty Francis just ‘joke’ about helping her husband rape her adolescent daughter’s friend, Sandy, the violin prodigy?!

You almost wish the writers could have given her more moments like this — but that would have taken away from the genius of it all. Betty is a fascinating character because she’s full of surprises; if she shoots too many pigeons, or makes too many horribly inappropriate jokes, the wholly important surprise factor becomes nonexistent. Like many of the women characters on Mad Men, she’s simultaneously unique and a symbol of her time — when she fires Carla, she’s dripping with white privilege; when she sleeps with the door-to-door salesman, she is the epitome of the desperate housewife; but when she catches that flight to elope in Reno (baby Gene in tow), and when she teaches those squatters in the city how to make goulash, she’s something totally other. However you read Betty — too cruel, too cold, or too crazy — her significance on the show should never be doubted.

N I C H E lifestyle

WOMEN of MAD 39 year old American actress from Idaho, who has played the role of Joan Holloway since 2007. Also known for her roles as Blanche (Drive, 2011 ), Saffron (Firefly, 2002-2003) and Nicolette Raye (Kevin Hill television series, 2004-2005).

Joan Holloway Shows Us How to Werk a Friendship Joan Holloway makes us uncomfortable. From the very first episode of, as she ushers us into the crazy world of Madison Ave., and introduces us to work life at Sterling Cooper, we feel awkward next to her. Admit it — your jaw was on the floor when she looked Peggy Olson right in the eyes and made the following speech with a straight face:

‘GO HOME, TAKE A PAPER BAG, CUT SOME EYEHOLES OUT OF IT. PUT IT OVER YOUR HEAD, GET UNDRESSED AND LOOK AT YOURSELF IN THE MIRROR. REALLY EVALUATE WHERE YOUR STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES ARE. AND BE HONEST.’

26

FALL 2014

Instantly we hated her. Or loved her. Or hated her. It was impossible to say for sure. It’s easy to see Joan from the perspective of the men who love, lust and obsess over her. Roger Sterling, Lane Pryce, Greg Harris, Bob Benson, that horrible horror of horrors, Herb Rennet from Jaguar. Hell, even Don Draper broke down and had to get her flowers one day. We could consider some of the most powerful moments her story brought to the show. Because of Joan’s character and ‘The Mountain King’ episode, we learned that there are still many, many people who believe that you cannot really be raped by your fiancée (or that if you go out to dinner after being raped, that means it wasn’t really rape). Joan’s sexual arrangement with Herb has also sparked much dialogue--and rightly so. Is she a prostitute? An entrepreneur? Is she the next Peggy Olson? All valid questions, all open for debate. But there is one aspect of Joan that should receive as much attention as her waist-to-hip ratio, and her relationships with the men on the series. More than a gorgeous emerald dress, more than a boardroom full of men, Joan Holloway knows how to werk the hell out of a relationship. She is — or becomes — an unbelievably amazing friend. Of all the roles we see women play on television, this may be one of the least common. Her interactions with Peggy are the most interesting to watch, as their friendship is one that transforms over the seasons. Joan does not start out as an unbelievably amazing friend, especially as Peggy goes on to gain new responsibilities in the office. She’s jealous and simultaneously arrogant, and it was sometimes unpleasant to watch. But eventually she becomes an actual friend, even if we still get the sense that she sees Peggy as a kid sister. The world of Mad Men feels that much more true to life when we’re watching Peggy and Joan lament their work troubles behind closed doors: In the Season Six episode, ‘To Have and to Hold,’ we got a glimpse at another important friendship in Joan’s life. Kate, the Mary Kay saleswoman (also a notable woman of Mad Men, as she was in town looking to make a big career move with Avon) shows up at a crucial point in Joan’s life. Because she agreed to sleep with Herb in exchange for a partnership, she’s being criticized at work, and her marriage to Greg is in a shambles. But Kate shows up and does what best friends from out of town are supposed to do-reminds Joan that she is a brilliant, amazing, inspiring human being, and gets her into a little trouble for the night. The two end up making out with a couple of young fellas in a club while Bonnie & Clyde plays. Because, that’s what friends are for. She’ll also give you valuable advice, when you haven’t quite figured out your upper management position:

‘YOU WANT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY? STOP DRESSING LIKE A LITTLE GIRL.’ NICHEmagazine.ca

TRAVEL BITES by Chelsea Forman | travel columnist

I never would have expected to want to eat my way through a vacation on the Riviera Maya, but I did and it was wonderful.

I

would like to start by addressing a misconception about Mexico — in this particular case the Riviera Maya. How many times have you been warned before soaring down to the white sanded, Caribbean coast of the country not to eat anything, not to indulge in the frosty blended cocktails, and to always, no matter what, pack plenty of Imodium®? What I experienced in the Riviera Maya was something wildly different than stomach bugs and sun baked buffets, all thanks to a little thing called Gourmet Inclusive. Karisma Hotels & Resorts is pioneering a new vacation experience for travellers seeking the luxuries of Mexico without the hassle of scheduling a Twinrix® vaccination beforehand. The exclusive resorts developed the Gourmet Inclusive concept to ensure visitors can enjoy the best of the tropical wonderland while dining on decadent, world class dishes prepared by renowned chefs. The sprawling El Dorado Royale, A Spa Resort in the Riviera Maya, boasts 150,000 square feet of greenhouses growing fresh,

flavourful, hydroponic vegetables and herbs that supply Karisma’s 12 resorts and are used by chefs to enhance the culinary experience. Guests of Karisma can order gourmet dishes from butlers beachside or have them delivered bedside 24 hours a day. Ramping the culinary experience up to new, delicious levels Karisma Hotels & Resorts, with Air Canada and Jackson Family Wines have introduced the Canadian Beef Culinary Series. The second week of every month throughout 2014 Karisma El Dorado Royale, A Spa Resort will be hosting a renowned Canadian chef who will delight attendees with new and innovative beef dishes, paired exclusively with Jackson Family Wines. NICHE magazine was invited down to Riviera Maya by Karisma Hotels & Resorts, Air Canada and Jackson Family Wines to experience the inaugural event where Canadian celeb chef Louis Charest served up unforgettable beef dishes that were paired with delicious wine samplings by Jackson Family Wines.

For an all-too-quick four night trip I basked in the tropical weather of the Riviera Maya by day, exploring the sprawling El Dorado Royale property and its endless luxuries, and by night I indulged in the shear cooking magic of Chef Charest.

There’s over 100 cuts of beef.

And that’s really the beauty of beef, it’s so diverse,

IT CAN BECOME ANYTHING. -MARTIN CARPENTER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CANADIAN BEEF INC.

Our culinary journey began with a beach barbeque where a line of chef ’s in crisp white linens the colour of the sand beneath our feet sliced simple strips of beef from most every cut imaginable onto our plates for tasting. The beef was lightly seasoned — salt, pepper and a touch of oil — it was an introduction to the diversity of beef, how it can stand alone, how each cut is so completely different from the next. It was the first step into our education about beef. Beef initiation if you will. After the first night we delved deeper into the more complex world of preparing gourmet beef. On our second evening we sat under a palapa listening to Chef Charest explain the evening’s menu. We were served a grilled rib eye with chimichurri, braised beef shank in a demi glacé and a grilled petit tender. As we began eating the palm trees started to rustle, and a torrential downpour of rain began tearing through the roof of the palapa. The tropical drops were so enormous that it wasn’t long before the water on the ground was ankle deep. Napkins went over the top of wine glasses and shoes were pulled from feet and tucked behind backs on chairs. With toes dipping in the rain water on the floor, our forks and knives never stopped moving, and we all understood then the magnificence of perfectly prepared Canadian Beef. We were soaked by the mighty warm drops of water, but it didn’t matter, the food was all consuming. The rain ended quickly and after dinner that night our group strolled to one of the resorts restaurants, Santa Fe Grill, for a night cap — and of course for me, dessert. As we stood on a balcony overlooking the expansive mangrove jungle one of my

travel comrades began telling a comedic story with great arm gestures. He threw one of his arms to the side and knocked my carrot cake (hardly touched, I’d only had one bite) off my plate. It sailed through the air and then down; down three stories to the marshy ground below. We heard a commotion and hung our heads over the side of the railing only to see a huge crocodile munching down my cake. I couldn’t help but imagine how much more he’d like a sample of Chef Charest’s Canadian Beef. The third evening things became a little bit more Kitchen Stadium-esque. We were offered aprons and sat at beautiful tables facing the front of house. Chef Charest and Martin Carpenter, the Executive Director of Canadian Beef Inc. took us through a step by step cutting demo and cooking class of the best kind – the type where you sit wearing an apron and drinking wine while someone else does all the work, you know what I’m talking about. The dinner was superb. We started with beef chuck ravioli with jalapeno beurre blanc paired with a Russian River Valley, 2010 Chardonnay. We moved onto achiote BBQ top sirloin with lobster risotto with Shiitake mushroom chips and sofrito velouté, paired with a Santa Maria Valley, 2009 Pinot Noir. The finale was a superb chocolate symphony tasting plate with the absolute highlight being Jackson Family Wine’s Sonoma County 2010 Zinfandel. With full stomachs we made our way to one of El Dorado Royale’s beachside bars. We sat on beautiful wooden swings and lazily sipped cocktails while the ebb and flow of the tide lulled us into a sedated sleepiness.

Our fourth and final night. Every meal leading up to this one was like a small lesson before the big exam. Dressed in our formal finest we were welcomed at our final venue, Fuentes Culinary Theatre, by a mariachi band, tequila laden vacationers dancing in what I’m sure they thought to be a classy manner, and glasses of champagne. It wasn’t until we walked through the doors into the theatre that I truly understood the seriousness to which El Dorado Royale takes it’s culinary events. Forget “Kitchen Stadium-esq” — Fuentes is the tropical, more fun twin sister to the real Kitchen Stadium. The palapa stands at over 100 feet and is decked out with a state of the art kitchen designed for classes and demonstrations. There is a sound system and enormous projectors so that you can see every cut the chef makes. The wait staff is beyond charming and drinks magically appear before you every time you turn your head! Chef Charest prepared a meal fit for royalty this final evening. Five courses, five different cuts of beef. The starter was incredibly memorable. Flaxseed spiced beef tenderloin crudos served with a quail egg, cilantro aioli, jícama and mango salad, paired with a Sonoma County, 2011 Sauvignon Blanc. This was one of my absolute favourite meal pairings. The tropical grapefruit and peach notes in the Sauvignon Blanc complimented the acidity and flavour in the salad, while the spicy flavours in the beef brought out some really unique spices in the wine. We ate and drank Jackson Family Wines and listened to Chef Charest discuss the menu, and intently watched as he handled the different cuts of beef with mastery. Four days. That’s all it took for me to learn that Mexico can in fact be a superb place for a culinary vacation, you just have to pick the right place. Sunshine, crystal clear water and divine food are a wonderful combination — and if you need a hook to get your partner down there, just throw the words “Canadian Beef ” into that sentence. I guarantee you an unforgettable vacation at El Dorado Royale and a new perspective on Canadian beef.

FA S H ION Encompassing boldness, glamour and undeniable sexiness, Versace has stayed true to the family driven Italian label since the founding in 1978 by Gianni Versace.

by Josie Joy Saldat | fashion columnist

ianni was born in 1946 in the city of Reggio di Calabria, Italy and was instantly immersed in a life of Roman and Greek classical influences. With a dressmaker mother, Gianni joined his mother at her atelier, disregarding his father’s hopes in young Gianni pursuing a surveying degree from a technical school. Gianni moved to Milan in 1972 where he worked alongside numerous Italian designers including Complice, Genny, Mario Valentino and Callaghan. With her elder brother leaving the nest, Gianni’s sister, Donatella would take the train great distances to visit and assist his work. Versace became known for representing a sense of power, beauty, strength, in-your-face sexiness and not being afraid to push all limits within the fashion industry. Cutting-edge techniques and use of unique materials such as aluminum mesh proved that Versace was constantly pushing the boundaries. Gianni Versace found copious amounts of inspiration from artists such as designer André Courrèges, and the innovative Andy Worhol as well as influence from Ancient Roman and Greek art. His admiration for art became evident through the use of elaborate baroque and wild animal prints which quickly became iconic for the fashion house. The Versace logo was instantly recognizable for the use of a gold medusa head and iconic Greek key print. Gaining quick popularity, new friendships came to light with Elton John, Madonna, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista. Incorporating supermodels in large groups for advertisements became a signature marketing tactic for the house of Versace, and Gianni was later credited with creating the ‘supermodel’ by agreeing to pay high sums.

It was through Donatella’s use of celebrities and supermodels for advertising techniques that helped Versace reach stratospheric heights. Not only friendships, but romance as well, Gianni Versace embarked in a relationship with Antonio D’Amico which lasted until Gianni’s death 15 years later. Versace group produces luxury clothing, accessories, makeup and home furnishings as well as operating Palazzo Versace hotel in Australia and Dubai which reflects pure opulence in every aspect. Gianni was a mastermind with a key interest in architecture and art. Some of his main inspirations came from Andy Worhol, Ancient Greek and Roman art as well as abstract art. When the proposition came of opening the first fashion-branded hotel, Gianni could not resist. The House of Versace branched out and created costumes for numerous theatre performances as well as ballet productions throughout his career which resulting in being awarded with theatre’s Machera D’Argento prize. the San Francisco Opera in 1989. Frantic times came to halt and things began to slow down when Gianni was diagnosed with a rare cancer of the inner ear in 1993. Many large roles within the company were put in the hands of brother, Santo and sister, Donatella.

FALL 2014

July 15, 1997, Versace was shot and murdered on the front steps of his Miami Beach home and the re-noun fashion empire was left in the hands of Santo taking over as CEO and his dearest younger sister and greatest admirer, Donatella Versace, with the reins for all creative aspects. With the tragic death of a true industry genius, The Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City honoured Gianni Versace with a retrospective held soon after his passing. In 2002, Versace was also honoured with a showcase of his work at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, featuring 138 of his most famous designs and a handful by his sister, Donatella. Versace is a true dynasty filled with soul and passion. Gianni Versace left a lifetime pension of 50 million to partner, D’Amico and his empire in the hands of his family including a fifty-percent stake to the main heiress of the empire, his niece, Allegra Versace. Gianni Versace passed a legacy of gracing the industry with vitality and art. While her previous battles with addictions, Donatella Versace pushed though and continues to bring life to the family dynasty. Retaining the foundations of structure, embroidery and revealing designs, Versace designed many pieced worn by Beyonce for the recent On The Run tour.

FAL L FRESH

T

by Sara Rose | fashion columnist

he trees have shed their summer layers, and we all know what that means! It’s finally time to retrieve the stored fall fashion from hibernation. Are you one to hide your seasons in storage? If your like most west coast fashionistas out there, you are the owner of seasonal wardrobes. Seasonal wardrobes meaning specific apparel for each weather system or season. Therefore, along with reintroducing pieces back into your “collection” (it just sounds more chic calling it that) there should be a purge of unnecessary articles. Let’s discard the residuals and begin FALL FRESH.

To get warmed up and relieve your ‘discard’ stresses, begin by getting rid of the obvious discards. There are always going to be major duds, with unnecessary rips, snags, colour stains (the armpit region is always a zone to be wary of — whites aren’t supposed to be tye-dye yellow... just saying), or completely outdated pieces. Sooooo ya — you can go ahead and just toss those garments now. Always remember that one woman’s fashion trash is another woman’s fashion find. Make sure to drop articles at your nearest VVboutique (Value Village) and let them be the final judge of your discard pile. There are multiple designers or creative persons out there, looking for exactly that toss to recreate and rejuvenate! Now that the warm up is complete, bringing in a counterpart (a.k.a. a really honest friend) at this point in the game can be of major assistance. I find it makes the whole process a lot more fun and a whole lot easier, as they can help make the tough calls. They might also be willing to take a few pieces off your hands (meaning you have always borrow it back if you get purgers remorse). Feel better? With closet space to spare, your fall fashion fabulousness is clearly in plain sight.

Mayf

Cleaning your closet should be an enjoyable project to undertake. Out with the old will in turn make more room for some new. AND to your delight and surprise, you may discover new ensembles right in your closet! We might not be prepared for the weather to change but help begin the preparation. Enjoy the entrance into Fall — Freshly.

For each garment or accessory, ask yourself...

FALL 2014

ARTS & FINDS THE ESSENCE OF MID-CENTURY AWESOME:

PARTIES AND DÉCOR. KIND OF LIKE HOW MAYA ANGELOU SAID “MODERATION IN MODERATION,” THERE’S A FINE LINE BETWEEN MINIMAL AND SUPERFLUOUS. by Jill Lang | arts columnist A Leo would understand this line and dance all over it. Art and hedonism come in necessary. In the 50s and 60s, people enjoyed life and meant every moment of it. Although I can’t say I’ve ever watched the cultural phenomenon Mad Men, the show must be doing something right if it’s paying such dedicated homage to my favourite era of the twentieth century. The Second World War provoked minimalism, while artists dictated functionality, appearances and design. Leo enlivened the party. Vintage 60s smocked pillow in emerald velveteen for the leonine princess? Eventually, it seems, we understand our value. Tough times may produce innovative designs out of necessity, sure, as long as we understand the need is to be creative.

N I C H E home

THE MORE YOU KNOW:

JUPITER IN LEO INSPIRES COURAGE TO LIVE FROM THE HEART, GENEROSITY AND GOOD FORTUNE

I suppose we could be critical and focus on everything that went wrong in the past, or we could beat the drums of timeless beauty, and bedazzle ourselves on into the future. Let’s lounge like lazy lions on tufted magenta sofas, beckoning to the bar carts to roll us some drinks while a handsome man throws on some vinyl records next to the retro media console. Surround sound button to the left. Ladies winking fake, flowing lashes to the right. People and plants vibing against a backdrop of graphic patterns, vibrant colours and dimmed lights. Is that a starburst mirror flickering? Fortunately our predecessors are downsizing, and the market is flush with works from designers like Charles and Ray Eames, Eeros Saarinen, Hans Wagner and Florence Knoll (to name a few). My wish list includes a vintage globe, along with the original Brazilian rosewood Eames Lounger and Ottoman. I’ll also snag a couple Saarinen womb chairs with ottomans, 48

FALL 2014

tulip stool, two executive arm chairs and a side table in Danish teak. Of course, I’ll need a 1964 Smith Corona Corsair deluxe manual typewriter in turquoise aqua blue. Back to the basics, you know? And a shag, universe — don’t forget the shag carpet!

What can I say? Earthly comforts, shiny things and humans who follow their hearts. Jupiter in Leo at its finest. It’s not a wonder that Leo rules the heart. Interestingly the Eames Lounger and Ottoman were released during a Jupiter in Leo transit in 1956. And oddly enough, Charles Eames was greatly influenced by the Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen, who shared a birthday in late Leo with son, Eeros Saarinen, who happened to be a close friend and business associate of Charles Eames. The legendary Office of Charles and Ray Eames played host to some of the most groundbreaking designers in America and was known as the ‘little studio that could.’ Flower power bloomed in our homes first, and then blossomed into a revolution.

NARS CONTOUR BLUSH

a sculpting duo for enhanced facial features

Day-to-Night Powder Contouring by Gracie Andoque | beauty columnist

T

here is a certain kind of power to be able to translate beauty looks from the fashion runways of the world to the comfort of your own vanity. We all have tuned in to Youtube and thanks to hundreds if not thousands of makeup gurus all over the globe, we become beauty pros at our own convenience. We become the muses of illusion, bringing back the shape that our faces once were and cheeks become more defined. Gone are the days when the art of contouring are reserved for the fashion runway’s elite and is now front and center in a woman’s daily beauty regimen. It can certainly be part of yours! It may be a little daunting but with the proper knowledge and perfect practice, it will be a cinch in due time. When it comes to venturing out to the world of contouring for the first time, using powder is your best bet. One would want to use contour powder on powder based foundations to avoid blotchiness. Plus, it is easier to blend. Most sculpting powder kits were created for dual purpose of shaping the face particularly the cheeks.

50

FALL 2014

The concept of contour is to sculpt an area of the face and define facial structure with the use of cosmetics.

MAKE UP FOR EVER SCULPTING KIT a light and shadow contrast to reshape the face

BECOME A CONTOUR GENIUS Get to know your facial features:

Each face shape is unique. Identifying the structure of your face will help determine where to properly place the dark shades.

Find the right shade that works with your skin tone:

Look for a hue that is slightly darker than your skin tone for a more natural look.

Cast true shadows and stay matte:

It is best not to use shimmery products to create a naturallooking contour. Leave the shimmer to highlighting.

Invest in proper makeup tools:

It takes the right kind of brushes to get the job done and help achieve the look with precision.

Perfect your technique:

(then you’ll create the perfect illusion) Practice makes perfect. The more you do it, the more you’ll get used to creating an effortless contour.

EASY, DAY-TO-NIGHT WEARABLE CONTOUR Day:

The idea is to mimic the appearance of a soft shadow when your face is under natural light. During the day, you want to keep your contour natural. Begin by dabbing a little bit of sculpting powder onto an angled contour brush. Remove excess product at the back of your hand. Then follow along the hollow part of your cheekbones and start applying product with soft upward motions. Start light and work your way up. When you find that the lines are a bit harsh, buff the edges out with a little bit of face powder. Define your eyes by lightly applying the same sculpting powder just slightly above the crease for a balanced day contour.

Night:

At night time, you can get away with a little bit more product and definition. Simply add to your day look by outlining your jaw bone and gradually building it up. If you are feeling confident and would like to go slightly pro, shape your nose by lightly applying contour powder to the sides of your nose bridge and blend in. Finish the look with a light dab of highlighting powder on cheeks, forehead, bridge and tip of the nose and chin.

• Dermal Fillers: Juvederm®, Voluma® and Volbella™ • Botox Cosmetic® • Wellness and Bioidentical Hormone Consultation • Medical Laser for Hair Removal and IPL Photo rejuvenation • SmartXide Dot™ Fractional Resurfacing • Professional and Therapeutic Skin Care – ZO® • Latisse®

NICHE TIPthefrom PROS Make sure to look straight ahead, while contouring, to instantly see results. You might overdo the application if you are applying the sculpting powder with your face to the side.

Fall 2014 runways were so thrilling! It was exciting to watch new concepts coming down the world runways. Newly appointed designers for MBMJ, Luella Bartley and Kate Hillier hit a home run with their first collaborative collection. It seems to me that the MBMJ collection for Fall 2014 echoes what all of us were wanting – a fresh approach to wearing coats, skirts and boots, with a style that plays up shape and layers, while leaving the girly girl intact. Leather, satin, and pleated tulle all carefully combined to create a divinely complicated feminine edginess.

P I N K TA R TA N PAT R I OT I C CONFIDENCE MEETS L A N G U I D L AY E R S It’s no secret that this is my favourite Canadian design label, and I watch as season after season, Kimberley Newport-Mimran outdoes herself. For Fall 2014, the Canadian reference was everywhere; in the oversized lodge inspired prints, the prominent use of fur, the crisp pops of red and a nod to the winter quilt. However, for me, the most reference was the realization that through this collection, Pink Tartan displays a deep understanding of how Canadian women long to dress for cold weather -in warm but interesting layers that simultaneously deliver style and panache.

VANCOUVER was recognized

here is something to be said for vacationing in your own backyard, especially when you live in British Columbia. The landscapes are so rich and ever changing. The communities are diverse and intriguing. The B.C food and lifestyle are second to none. Come along on my sea to sky adventure from Vancouver to Whistler. Before retreating into the mountains, we spent a few days in Vancouver enjoying an urban holiday. We stayed at the wonderful OPUS Hotel Vancouver, which was named one of the top 5 trendiest hotels in the world by TripAdvisor. The room was modern and chic, with a luxury spa-like bathroom and big, fluffy king size bed. The location was ideal, in the heart of Yaletown, and right near the seawall. From this fashionable home base, we experienced many aspects of Vancouver. Some of the city’s most popular neighbourhoods that we visited included Chinatown, Gastown, Granville Island, Granville Street, Robson Street, West End, Yaletown, Commercial Drive, Kitsilano, Davie Village and Kerrisdale. We devoured remarkable pizza at The Parlour, designer shopping at Holt Renfrew and bargain hunting at Army & Navy and Community Thrift, and had mind blowing poutine at Belgian Fries on the Drive. We walked everywhere, drank way too much artisan coffee, especially in Coal Harbour - the most perfect place to people watch in Vancouver. We also spent a lovely day watching artisans on eclectic Granville Island.

N I C H E travel

Vancouver is a coastal city with a greater Vancouver population of more than 2.4 million people. Did you know that Vancouver is proudly one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada? It’s true! About 52% of Vancouverites first language is not English. Vancouver is also the most densely populated Canadian municipality, and the fourth most densely populated city (with popular over 250,000) in North America, behind New York City, San Francisco and Mexico City.

Then it was time to road trip. One of the best parts about this trip was the transportation. The Sea to Sky highway demands the right vehicle, and Sara Nowak, award winning sales consultant at Vancouver’s MCL Motor Cars was nice enough to lone us a 2014 Jaguar XJ 3.0L AWD. It drove like a dream and looked even better. It hugged every curve of that wonderful highway from Vancouver to Whistler, and was whisper quiet. The interior was ultra luxurious and no amenity was overlooked. It is a dramatic combination of beauty, style and power – the hallmarks of a true fashionista. Seriously, I didn’t want to give the vehicle back.

We were in Whistler for four days, and stayed at the incredible Nita Lake Lodge (see Hidden Gems, page 72). It was the perfect spot from which to enjoy all that Whistler has to offer, without the bustle of the main village. I had not been to Whistler since before the 2010 Winter Olympics, and it was interesting to see the ‘spit and polish’ of the small skiing village and the transformation of the town core. As a non-skier, I was amply impressed, as there is now many other things to do like world class shopping, sightseeing, and of course, fine dining. There is no shortage of places to eat in Whistler, and no matter what you are looking for, it’s here. I was disappointed to see the fast food chains like McDonald’s taking up residence in this quaint little village, but the place was packed every time we walked passed the doors. We opted for unique dining experiences! And we were in luck, because it was “Dine Around Whistler” during our stay (shoulder season) which meant that almost every restaurant in town offered a $30/$40 multi-course menu. Our favourite in-town meal was at 66

Alta Bistro. This adorable little upscale eatery features the finest local and naturallyraised food with a showcase of hand-crafted cocktails, wines of character, and micro-brewed beer. Sourcing from the best suppliers of British Columbia and using traditional and modern culinary techniques, chef Cassettari prepared a culinary 4-course feast for us that were as much Whistler culture as it was true B.C fare. The Alta Deli Board, with local meats and cheeses was exceptional, and if you go, try the B.C. Snapper with clams and bacon — yum! Mixologist Scot Curry impressed the heck out of me all night long. His cocktail knowledge was beyond impressive and he is certainly a shining star at Alta Bistro. He even sources local ingredients and makes his own tonic (best G+T). This was also the first time we had experienced the award winning wines from Vancouver Island’s Unsworth Vineyards.

Sea Star Estate Farm & Vineyards recognized by the Northwest Wine Summit as a “Winery of Distinction” one of only 8 wineries in B.C. to be honoured. Our grapes are complemented by another Pender Island vineyard, Clam Bay Farms ensuring our wines are authentically made from locally grown grapes, bestowing their unique nature to the wine. THINGS TO DO WHEN TRAVELING FROM SEA TO SKY: 1. VODKA SHOTS IN THE BELVEDERE ICE ROOM AT BEARFOOT BISTRO (WHISTLER) —

No visit to Whistler is complete without an adventure at Bearfoot Bistro, located right in the heart of Whistler village. Not only did I try my hand at sabering a bottle of Champagne (successfully I might add, thanks to our gracious host Marc Des Rosiers), but we also donned white down-filled parkas and stepped inside the freezing Belvedere Ice room, the coldest vodka tasting room in the world. 2. ‘HAMILTON STREET’ PIZZA AT THE PARLOUR (YALETOWN) —

My favourite spot in Vancouver’s trendy Yaletown district. Lively, cozy and marvellous food! Try the Hamilton Street hand crafted pizza with blue cheese, arugula, pear, walnuts, caramelized onions and balsamic glaze.

Mountains are

the beginning and the end of all

3. SHOPPING AT COMMUNITY THRIFT & VINTAGE (GASTOWN) —

Right around the corner from Army & Navy in Vancouver’s Gastown district, is the best little used and vintage shop. I never leave without at least one bag full of clothing, shoes and bags, and I always snag a designer bargain. Last time? The coolest Valentino vintage shirt jacket. Cost me $87 bucks. Score!

NATURAL SCENERY. -JOHN RUSKIN

4. MAPLE BUTTER BEAVER TAIL AT ZOG’S DOGS (WHISTLER) —

Just next to the village ski lifts on Sundial Crescent, check out the little food kiosk that does serve up exceptional poutine topped with caramelized onions, but for me, the star of their menu was the warm maple butter beaver tail.

Even if you go to Whistler to wine and dine and perhaps reconnect with your partner, you have to get a little active, even if you don’t ski or snowboard. We spent an afternoon with Ziptrek Ecotours, on their Eagle Tour which consisted of three exhilarating hours, five ziplines, 4 treetop bridges and a 2000-foot zipline that drops 20 storeys! That was definitely enough excitement for one long weekend, so the following day, we headed off to Scandinave Spa, which offers

the Scandinavian bath experience, commonly referred to as hydrotherapy. Summer or winter; rain, shine or snow; the experience cleanses the body and skin, improves blood circulation and produces the effect of increased wellness and intense relaxation. With hot pools, cold plunges, sauna and steam, it only took a few hours to ease away daily life stresses. It was at once relaxing (hot) and shocking (cold) and each of the three stages was amazing.

Of course, if you are a snow bunny, there is no better place to spend a vacation this coming winter season. With the new peak-2-peak Gondola, visitors can experience Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. Did I mention that you ski into and out of a village filled with fashion, beauty and lifestyle shops? Yes, it is a little slice of mountain heaven.

If you are one of those people whose life is in desperate need of a recharge, let me tell you about Nita Lake Lodge.

enough so that I can find my own vacation rhythm but not so far that I cannot partake of the nightlife and dining, when the mood strikes me. This is what I loved most about Nita Lake Lodge. Perched elegantly on a pristine glacier fed lake, Nita Lake Lodge is just a five minute shuttle (complimentary) ride from the heart of Whistler Village. I chose the Hepburn quote quite on purpose, because Nita Lake Lodge reminded me a little of Audrey; beautiful, majestic and well put together, but never pretentious or boastful — equally comfortable in heels and lipstick or ballet flats and a ponytail.

My life is all about hustle and bustle, trying to cram as much as I can into each 24 hour block of time. So, when I am on holiday, I prefer to be removed from the main street action of a resort town; just far

Named one of the top 25 hotels in Canada by TripAdvisor, this massive wood lodge is located a mere 500 metres from the base of Whistler Mountain in the Creekside community.

Our lakefront suite was spacious and comfortable, with a massive beamed wall with fireplace that separated the living and sleeping areas. Expansive windows in both rooms and a balcony overlooking Nita Lake quickly became a favourite spot to convene for drinks and conversation; early morning with coffee and late evening with a great bottle of B.C wine. The spa inspired bathroom featured a massive soaker tub and a 2-person stone tiled glass shower. I was also impressed that the toiletries provided were L’Occitane en Provence, one of my favourite brands.

THINGS TO DO • Experience the ila™ Kundalini Massage at The Spa at Nita Lake Lodge. It is a unique back massage that uses essential oils, ancient massage techniques and chakra healing. I left feeling energized and happy • Reserve a complimentary canoe or kayak and meander around Nita Lake • Sample the fresh shucked oysters mignonette, with fresh horseradish and lemon in Aura Restaurant • Sign up for an Ashtanga Yoga class at Jivamukti Yoga Whister (located on the main level at Nita Lake Lodge). This exceptional practice makes the body flexible, strong and healthy and brings mental clarity, peace and happiness

• Hitch a mountain ride on the Whistler Creekside Gondola, located just 500 Dining at Nita Lake Lodge was certainly a metres from Nita Lake Lodge gastronomic treat! Lunch at Fix Café was homemade heaven, with delicious breads and pastries, expertly brewed coffee and one of the best fruit smoothies I have ever had. Dinner at Aura Restaurant was a multi-course sensation, and we reveled in every mouthful. Chef Paul Moran was a delight to talk to, and his knowledge of ingredients was impressive. At just 26 years of age, Chef Moran has travelled the world honing his culinary skills and was the first ever recipient of the Hawksworth Young Chef Scholarship in 2013. I think my most favourite dish was the Crispy Skin Chicken with round zucchini, chicken emulsion and wild mushrooms. A close second was the Nita Lake Salad with local Squamish greens, shaved raw veg and sherry dressing. Every dish brought to our table was fresh, innovative and yet simple — farm to table at its finest.

FALL 2014

Whistler’s only train station, which services the famous Rocky Mountaineer, is located at Nita Lake Lodge and there is a lovely walking path behind the hotel, which meanders through forested areas, alongside the creek and railway tracks. This is also the type of property that you just want to spend time in the open concept lobby and public spaces. Cure Lounge, the central bar area with oversize lodge furnishings was warm and cozy. I recommend sampling their signature cocktails — including a Caesar made with Ciroc vodka and port, adding flavour depth to this Canadian classic drink. There is also a fabulous art gallery onsite, White Dog Whistler Studio Gallery, which is worth a look-see. Of course, no wellness retreat is complete without a trip to the spa, and The Spa at Nita Lake Lodge did not disappoint. The peace and tranquility was palpable from the moment I walked through the spa doors. The relaxation lounge was filled with natural light and comfortable chaises. The rooftop hot tub and eucalyptus steam room were divine, and the treatments were professional and much needed. I highly recommend Sole Therapy and the Nurturing Body Wrap treatments. The Spa at Nita Lake Lodge specializes in wellness featuring sustainably-sourced organic products and offering an unforgettable experience. Nestled in the mountains, surrounded by natural awesomeness and created to elevate your senses and your expectations of what a great destination resort should be, Nita Lake Lodge was the perfect place for me to restore, renew, revive, reclaim and redeem. The management of Nita Lake Lodge dubs its property to be exceptional, intimate, authentic. An enthusiastic yes on all three counts from me.

TA L K My fab Fall by Mary Zilba | celebrity columnist

I

simply love it when the leaves start to change colours and the warm summer air turns crisp and evening comes a bit earlier. Who can resist putting on a cozy cashmere sweater and sitting by a fireplace or having a nice warm bowl of Butternut Squash soup curled up in a chair? NOT ME! Fall is also that time of year when I reminisce about my years growing up in Ohio and Southern Michigan. I can still hear the

high school bands practicing in the distance for football home games, Thanksgiving holidays and there is a certain smell in the air that when I close my eyes, I can still remember and I am home again. Fall is also that time of year when I indulge in one of my favourite activities; shopping. Every year I look forward to running out to my fave shops and indulging in the fab fall fashions. It’s time to cover up with beautiful fabrics and classic lines and colours. Neutral greys, browns, black and jewel toned sweaters and leggings, boots and stylish jackets, who can resist? Fab Fall also represents the time of year where everyone needs to hustle just a bit more and get back into a routine. Lazy days of summer turn into busy days of preparing kids for back to school, packing lunches, playing taxi cab mom again and overseeing the household in a much different way. Now that I have two boys out of high school, life is quite a bit different and balancing their needs can be a bit more challenging. My eldest son lives in Santa Barbara, California where he goes to school, so preparing him means days and days of organizing his life and getting used to a bit of Empty Nest Syndrome again. However, my middle son and youngest always have something on the go that keeps me on my toes at all times.

Personally, fall gets me back on my “A” game as well. It’s that time of year when I am less distracted by barbecues, sunny days and drinks on a patio and ready to tackle work with a new enthusiasm. It becomes a bit easier when the boys are in school for me to concentrate on my businesses and allows me the time to be more creative as well. My mother always said that when the kids are away at school the hours fly by so quickly, so be sure to organize your free time well. She certainly was right about that and I have learned to customize my time in a way that allows me evenings free to cook, help with homework and spend time with my boys. This particular fall season is extremely exciting for me as I am launching my very first Fall collection of MZ by LotusActiva. I am so thrilled to introduce some amazingly cozy active wear and sweaters for everyone just in time to cuddle up in style and am releasing some brand new music. So after a day’s work, put on your comfy sweaters, grab a bowl of hot soup, cuddle up next to the fireplace and savour the abundance and loveliness of Fall.

I often ask my clients when determining your closet’s space look at your lifestyle, for example, what are the items you use the most? What are the items that you use the least and you would want to keep new? And always think about how you want this closet, to help you make your daily routine more comfortable?

Your closet needs to be a place of joy and celebration of

WHO YOU ARE. - S TA C Y L O N D O N

THE GENERAL RULES OF THUMB FOR PLANNING A CUSTOM MADE CLOSET: • Drawers for small items should be at least 16 inches deep. • Shirts need about 40 inches of space for vertical hanging. • Dresses need about 72 inches of space for vertical hanging. • A pair of shoes requires approximately 8 inches of shelf width (slightly less for women’s shoes and slightly more for men’s). • A floor to ceiling mirror is an absolute necessity in a closet. • Play a game of golf on the Greg Norman designed course at the Nirwana Bali Golf Club • A drawer or space to put your everyday items is also a good idea, for example, car keys, lip balm, sunglasses, watches, etc. • A drawer for ties for men and scarves for women in my opinion has always paid off in the long run.

FIND A WAY TO DISPLAY YOUR BEST LOOKING ITEMS LIKE YOUR SHOES , PURSES AND HATS . These items will be the accessories of your closet. To do this, regular shelves without a door will do, or if you prefer a door to keep away dust from them, maybe a glass door is a much better idea. Showcasing your best looking shoes and purses especially, in my opinion is a best way to add a finishing touch to your closet organization. Whether customizing your closet or assembling a store/ bought unit, you must always know your

priority in organizing your closet before starting this process. Customizing your closet offers you more flexibility and is a more satisfying approach, yet store bought units re more cost efficient and quicker to complete. Either way it is always a good idea to contact a professional, however following the above tips is a great way to get started.

MAYBELLINE

by Sharrie Williams | celebrity columnist

An excerpt from the diary of Jane Allen, Maybelline founder Tom Lyle Williams’ niece, while she and her cousin Annette Williams visited her uncle’s Villa Valentino in Hollywood, right before the start of World War II. Part 1 of ‘Villa Valentino’ was featured in the Summer 2014 issue. Read it online at NICHEmagazine.ca Thursday, June 6, 1940 Then came the house — Villa Valentino. Everything is lovely. After seeing his movie pictures, we had some idea of the layout of the gardens and the house, but not one part in the pictures was as lovely as the actual gardens and home. The white house is a beautiful contrast to the various vivid colors all around the house. The swimming pool is grand and has all colors in lounge chairs, pillows, tile with lots of colors and varieties of colors in flowers. Next came the interior of Villa Valentino. You enter the house from the drive on the second floor. George’s bedroom and bath are just off the beautiful little patio as you enter the front door. The two bedrooms upstairs, one for Emery and one for Tom Lyle, are furnished beautifully. Emery has a pretty bathroom adjoining his bedroom, but Tom Lyle’s bathroom is the most beautiful I have seen, equipped with every imaginable convenience. From the hall upstairs you descend to the library with the dining room to the right of the library, down three steps. The carpeting on the stairs and in the library is almost an American Beauty shade of red. The banister is white wrought iron. The chairs in the library are light wood with light blue upholstering. Magazine rack and tables are hand carved and white. The desk is right by the window in the library, with a large white chair in front of the desk for Tom Lyle while he dictates. The linoleum on the dining room floor is a light blue and the furniture is light wood, modern in design. The wall opposite the large bay window is mirrored, so you can sit facing the window getting a beautiful view of the valley, garden and homes, and you can sit facing the mirror and get the same view reflected in the mirrors. The kitchen is small, compact,

84

FALL 2014

orderly and all done in red and white. The small bedroom next to the kitchen is a single bedroom with bath intended for a guest room, but used by Herbert, the cook. The living room is quite large, has a large bay window and a big door opening on the badminton court and gardens. The rug is the same as Tom Lyle had at Wabash Avenue, light rose in color. The grand piano takes one corner. The opposite corner has a Capehart radio and record playing combination. This piece of furniture is very light wood. The radio can be controlled or regulated from two or three different spots in the house and garden. One couch is a light tan with red design. In the by are two beautiful easy chairs with table, lamp and coffee table. To the side of the fireplace is a Duncan Pfyfe loveseat in light blue, with a beautiful coffee table in clear glass. The coffee table in front in front of the other couch is ebony wood with a gold mirror top. The drapes in the living room and library are gold, and such beautiful material. They are hung so well that they look like spun glass. In the corner of the living room is a very small door opening into the Rumpus Room. The Rumpus Room is one of the most attractive rooms I have ever seen, and certainly the cutest bar. The decorations are all South Sea Island, with grass rug, wicker furniture and even tall stools to sit at the bar. The room is also equipped with a bathroom. Every night before dinner, we went to the Rumpus Room. George came in dressed in white coat to mix us a cocktail. S H A R R I E W I L L I A M S is the heir to the Maybelline legacy, Tom Lyle Williams’ great-niece and Evelyn Boecher Williams’ granddaughter. Growing up in their homes, and steward of the vast Maybelline archives, Williams tells the story of the birth of the Maybelline empire and reveals intimate details about the fascinating family dynasty. NICHE invited Sharrie to give readers an inside look into this beauty empire — sharing excerpts from her book, The Maybelline Story, available online at Maybellinebook.com.

Creative professionals from all realms of the fashion industry and design world are redirecting their artistic juices to the re-emerging world of stationery. Thanks to many of our favourite designers, stationery has progressed from drab to fab with the use of aesthetically pleasing colours, patterns, typography, art, and imagery. The look of stationery has come a long way, but it also brings back the nostalgia of a magical time of handwritten notes, cards, and letters. Yes, technology is great but there is something endearing (yet unfamiliar in the modern world) about receiving a thoughtful handwritten note or card from a writer who has committed to their words; no delete button, no backspace! Now that stationery is as chic as designs on this season’s runway and as creatively inspiring as art at the Louvre, it can be used for more than just writing your to-do list.
