MILK MEMORIES KEPT FRESH IN THE ARCHIVES There was time when everyone got their daily milk fix from the milkman. Doorstep deliveries of fresh pints of milk in glass bottles are arguably less common than they used to be and, for many of us, we now rely on supermarkets for a steady supply of the white stuff. So how do we preserve the cherished memory of our friendly milkman?

Well, the archives of Thompsons Dairies of Beverley is one way of doing this, as they document the activities of the dairy from the 1940s to the early 1990s and include photographs of old milk floats, and a daily log of deliveries made to schools in the East Riding.

As generations come and go, these archives will act as a reminder of the days of the milkman, and teach

us about what was once a way of life for millions.

Sales records reveal exactly what was sold by the business on a weekly basis, including non-dairy produce like fruit juice and bread Thompsons Dairies was first established in 1882 as a small-

scale operation in the yard of 97 Keldgate, Beverley. It later grew to become the chief supplier of milk and other dairy products in the Beverley area and was a strong

competitor to Dale Farm. A major East Riding business; it ceased trading in 1992, but its memory will live on in the archives.

Crafty opened its doors some 9 years ago in Hornsea. Kim had the idea of marrying her two passions – crafting and coffee, into one business and the Crafty Coffee Shop was born. It fast became a place where knitters could natter over a cuppa, crocheters can compare over a coffee and sewers could thread over shortbread.

Very soon the Hornsea shop built a crafting community through evening classes and knit and natter groups.

However, for the first 6 months of trading the Crafty Coffee Shop had to run as a ‘take out’ only business. For any new business, not being able to offer their full service was always going to be difficult, but Kim said that the support that she received from the local people of Beverley spurred her on.

In November 2020, the week that tier 3 was announced (under the then COVID-19 restrictions) was a challenging time for any business, but this is when Kim and the team opened up their new Beverley shop.

“The opportunity to come to Beverley was too good to miss,” says Kim, “and I wanted to offer the craft enthused population of

Nuts: Are They All Healthy?

Full of healthy fats, as well as protein and fibre, nuts and seeds are often cited as the nutritionists’ snack of choice.

But is it possible to have too much of a good thing? And are some better for you than others? We went to three wellness experts to find out – from what constitutes a healthy portion to a clever gut health-boosting hack, here’s what they said.

They Have Superfood Status Forget avocados and goji berries – nuts and seeds are one of the food world’s unsung nutritional heroes.

As Kathryn Bremner, wellness expert explains, “Nuts are superfoods packed with fibre, protein, vitamins, minerals and micronutrients. They’re a key element in the Mediterranean diet and according to research by Harvard University, just one serving of nuts per day is associated with a 30% lower risk of heart disease compared with having one serving of red meat per day.” Registered dietitian Louise Bula agrees, adding both nuts and seeds can prolong your life, with studies showing they can lower cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure and improve blood sugar control.

A Daily Dose Can Help With Weight Loss Numerous studies show eating a daily portion of nuts may prevent you from gaining weight. “Nuts are rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, which naturally target fat around the midriff,” Kathryn explains. “The best nuts for weight loss are those low in calories and high in fibre. The gingko nut is a good example. It isn’t easily available in the UK, but you can buy it in powder form to add to your morning smoothie. Walnuts and chestnuts can also help keep your appetite under control.” Belinda Hunter, registered nutritionist, adds that nuts and seeds

are also a good energy source if you’re following a lower carbohydrate diet. “Flaxseeds, chia, walnuts and hemp are particularly rich in omega-3 oils, which can also be handy if you are suffering from an inflammatory condition or are looking to support brain health.”

Some Are Higher In Carbs Than Others By and large, nuts are a low-carb snack packed with healthy fats and protein, but it pays to pick yours wisely if you are watching your waistline. As Belinda explains, “Cashews and sunflower seeds are particularly high in carbohydrates, but not all carbs are the same. For example, the carbs in sunflower seeds contain oligosaccharides, which can support gut health and may help regulate blood sugar. Also be wary of chestnuts, which contain twice as many carbs as cashews.”

They Can Support Muscle Growth, Too Both nuts and seeds are widely praised for their high protein content, but not all of them are created equal.

“Hemp seeds come top of the pile when it comes to protein (32%), closely followed by pumpkin seeds (30%), which is why you’ll often find these in protein powders. Peanuts are third on the list, followed by almonds and pistachios. When compared to a steak at 25% protein and salmon at 20% protein, they rank surprisingly highly,” Kathryn adds. If you are vegan, just be wary of relying solely on nuts and seeds for protein, as they aren’t complete proteins. “Nuts and seeds don’t contain all nine essential amino acids so it’s important for those on a plant-based diet to combine these with vegetables, beans or lentils,” says Kathryn.

Just Remember To Perfect Your Portion “A small handful of mixed nuts (around 30g) is the perfect portion size, providing around 180 calories,” says Kathryn. “The percentage of fat will differ slightly according to the nut – for example, most nuts have predominantly unsaturated fats but

roasting walnuts and flaxseeds as these have higher levels of fats than other nuts and seeds and can be easily damaged by heat,” she adds.

Brazil nuts, cashews and macadamias are higher in saturated fat. Too much of this type of fat can lead to raised cholesterol levels,” she says. “To get a diverse range of nutrients, the ideal combination of nuts for a snack would contain some almonds (rich in protein, vitamin E and magnesium), peanuts (high in protein and folate), walnuts (for omega-3s) and a couple of Brazil nuts, one of the richest sources of selenium.”

It’s Important To Know What You’re Buying Avoid dry roasted, salted, flavoured or honey roasted nuts, which often contain added salt and sugar and are loaded with calories. Kathryn also recommends buying organic nuts if your budget stretches, although if it doesn’t, consider just buying cashews, pistachios and peanuts organically, as these have been flagged as having a higher pesticide load than others.

Nut butters are also a great way to get your daily dose. “Opt for brands that don’t have any added sugar or additives – Pip & Nut and Meridian are good examples,” Louise recommends.

Soaking Them Helps With Digestion If you have IBS or struggle with your digestion, it could be worth soaking nuts before you eat them. “While nuts are packed with nutrition, they also contain phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors. These are naturally occurring chemicals, which can have an impact on how our body can absorb nutrients and reduce our ability to take up the goodness from minerals. Phytic acid binds to some minerals within nuts in the digestive tract to prevent proper absorption, which can cause problems. Soaking nuts in salted water for a few hours will activate the enzymes to neutralize the enzyme inhibitors. Simply add a pinch of salt to enough water to cover the nuts and leave for a few hours,” Kathryn advises. Belinda adds that roasting nuts will also reduce levels of phytic acid as well as enhance their flavour, but don’t roast them for longer than 10-20 minutes as intense heat can damage the nut’s oils. “Avoid

Louise says you can’t go wrong with upping your intake of almonds and flaxseeds. “These are the most nutrient-dense varieties. A 28g serving of almonds contains 14g healthy fats, 3.5g of fibre, 37% of your RDI for vitamin E and 19% of the RDI for magnesium. At the same time, a 28g serving of flaxseeds contains an impressive 7.8g of fibre, 5g of protein, 35% of the RDI for manganese, 31% of the RDI for thiamine (vitamin B1) and 28% of the RDI for magnesium.”

Finally, Get Creative Your daily dose of nuts and seeds can be so much more than a mere handful, says Belinda. Here are her top ideas for incorporating nuts into your diet… l Add nuts and seeds to granola and muesli, or sprinkle over porridge. l Add a variety of nuts and seeds to a small amount of dried fruit, coconut flakes, dark chocolate buttons, popped corn and cinnamon to make your own trail mix. l Sprout sunflower and quinoa seeds and sprinkle over salads to add flavour and crunch. l Dip almonds and Brazil nuts in dark chocolate for a sweet treat. l Blitz toasted hazelnuts and sesame seeds with cumin, fennel and coriander seeds, thyme, sea salt and black pepper to make a Dukkah – sprinkle over roasted vegetables, salads and hummus. l Blend walnuts with basil, rocket, garlic and walnut oil to make a pesto – enjoy with roasted vegetables, pasta or chicken. l Blitz pre-soaked nuts into a paste (using stock or coconut milk) to thicken curries and soups. l Roast the seeds from the middle of a butternut squash – sprinkle with olive oil, spices and seasoning and roast for ten minutes. l Make chia jam with your favourite fruit and serve with pancakes or plain yoghurt.

World of Wine Small on price, big on quality . . . that’s Morrisons Soave 2020, a crisp and refreshing summer drink that triumphed at the annual International Wine Challenge, being awarded an impressive 92 points, a Silver medal and a Great Value White under £8 award. .

This put it ahead of an iconic wine of the region, Pieropan La Rocca Soave Classico; which, at £30 a bottle is more than six times the price of Morrisons £4.25 offering.

I enjoyed a bottle during a back garden family lunch on the hottest day of the otherwise washout month of May - salads, crusty bread, cheese and meat boards and it went down a treat.

Overall, the supermarket is on a roll at the moment, taking home one gold, 20 silvers, 49 bronzes and 33 “commended’s” at the wine challenge.

The gold was awarded to The Best Amarone 2017 (following a gold at last year’s International Wine & Spirit Competition), while other highlights included a silver for The Best Cremant de Limoux, which has been on offer for just £10, down from £12, but unfortunately that offer finished on June 1.

Three brand new additions to the range – The Best Vinho Verde, The Best Gavi di Gavi and The Best Alto Adige Pinot Grigio – won bronze medals before they even launched in stores.

The International Wine Challenge sees thousands of wines from all over the world blind tasted by a panel of experts. The judges’ tasting notes described the wine as “Lemon sherbet and cream on rose.

Textured, round and soft with great balance and subtle, yet lingering flavours, on the finish.”

Mark Jarman, Head of Wine Sourcing at Morrisons said: “We pride ourselves on offering our customers fantastic quality wines for affordable prices. The silver award given to our own-brand Soave exemplifies this; it may have a small price tag, but the judges still appreciated its balance, distinctive nose and lasting finish.

It’s always good to hear from independent wine merchants and we’re lucky to have Roberts & Speight in Beverley and House of Townend in Melton/Hull. As well as discovering something a bit different from the usual supermarket fare, staff are always knowledgeable and only too willing to take time out to discuss wine and make recommendations.

And even though it is part of a chain I would bracket the Beverley branch of Majestic with those comments, too.

So, even though they are based way down South, it was lovely to hear from Hampshire-based independent wine merchants Wine Utopia for the first time this month (visit https://m2.wineutopia.co.uk).

With one of the key gift dates happening this month (Father’s Day - and, yes, I know I’m dropping big hints here!) they wanted to tell me about what seems a really good offer.

Their “Father’s Day Duo” (£30.95) comprises two really good wines - first, a bottle of 2017 vintage Château Milon Cuvée Caprice which is a proper Saint-Émilion, with rich plummy fruit throughout.

It’s intense, warm, spiced fruit and soft leather on the nose; in short a food-friendly Bordeaux with a fresh, structured finish that works with a range of dishes, from classic robust beef, game and lamb roasts or stews right through to well-aged farmhouse Cheddar.

That particular wine sells for £17.95 a bottle and the Father’s Day offer pairs it with a delicious rose, that’s perfect drinking this time of the year.

Domaine de la Vieille Tour Rosé 2020, Côtes de Provence (£13.95), is raspberry-pink with delicate aromas followed by lovely sweet fruit from Grenache grapes; superb on a summer’s day. Serve chilled and accompany it with seafood, Mediterranean dishes, or just by itself.

I also notice that this month also claims June 26th to be International Rose Day so if you wanted you could celebrate that, too, with this wine.

Finally, this month, I make no comment on the news that the demand for low and no alcohol beverages, while still small, is on the rise, although it’s claimed that wine is missing out on the opportunity, compared to beers and spirits.

In a presentation given at the London Wine Fair, Lulie Halstead, from research company Wine Intelligence, said that although 39 per cent of UK wine drinkers are actively moderating their alcohol intake, the demand for low and no alcohol wine is static and may even be going backwards.

The growth of low no alcohol drinks that some had claimed was coming, will not come from wine, she said. In fact compared to before Covid, she felt there is currently less opportunity for low and no alcohol wines to succeed.

Even though more people are aware of the options, they are less likely to buy them, she said.

Sweet Chili Lime Chicken (Serves 4)

Chef Hossein Ghazaani, owner of Pizza Pan, Beverley says this is an entree that disappears quickly whenever I serve it at our dinner parties. It’s difficult to say which part is more addictive - the crunchy and airy texture, or the flavours of sweet chili sauce mixed with freshly squeezed lime juice.

The shallow-frying method in the recipe will produce the same crisp texture as deep-frying without using a lot of oil, and you have the option of getting the chicken extra crunchy by double-frying for 30 extra seconds.

Ingredients: Sweet Chili Lime Chicken 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 egg whites 1lb boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts, cut into 1” cubes 6 tablespoons sweet chili sauce (recipe follows) 2 tablespoons Chinese rice wine or dry sherry 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice 1 teaspoon sesame oil ½ teaspoon crushed red chili flakes 1½ cups cornstarch ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 3 cups plus 1 tablespoon peanut oil or vegetable oil 8 dried red chilies (Japonés, serrano, Tien Tsin, or cayenne) 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger

1 teaspoon white sesame seeds, for garnish Scallions, green parts thinly sliced, for garnish

Sweet Chili Sauce 5 fresh red jalapeño or Fresno chilies, roughly chopped 1 clove garlic, peeled ½ cup rice vinegar ½ cup sugar ½ teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon cornstarch Method: 1. In a large bowl, combine the soy sauce and egg whites. Add the chicken, toss to coat with the mixture, and let sit for 10 minutes.

2. In a small bowl, combine the sweet chili sauce, rice wine, lime juice, sesame oil, and chili flakes. Set the sauce aside.

3. In a large bowl or deep plate, toss the cornstarch with the salt and black pepper. Add the chicken and toss to coat in the cornstarch, shaking off any excess before frying.

4. Pour the 3 cups of oil into a wok and heat until the temperature reads 350°F on a deep-fry thermometer.

Working in two or three batches, fry the chicken cubes until golden brown on the outside and cooked through, 4 to 5 minutes, flipping with tongs about halfway through to ensure even cooking. Transfer the chicken to a plate lined with paper towels to drain. Optional: To get the chicken extra crispy, work in batches again and return the chicken to the oil for 30 more seconds before draining again on paper towels.

5. Pour the oil out of the wok into a heatproof container and save for discarding. Wipe the wok with a paper towel to remove any browned bits, but don’t wash.

6. Reheat the wok over medium-high heat. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon oil and swirl to coat the bottom.

Add the dried chilies, garlic, and ginger and stir-fry until just fragrant, about 20 seconds. Pour in the sauce mixture and stir until thickened, 1 to 2 minutes.

7. Return the chicken to the wok and stir well to coat with sauce. Transfer the chicken to a serving dish. Garnish with sesame seeds and scallions and serve.

I love using it plain as a dip for raw vegetables or a fiery alternative to hummus and soy sauce, respectively.

The sweetness is easy to control by varying the amount of sugar, and the heat by choosing the type of chilies you use. Red jalapeños or Fresnos are my favorite because they give a medium heat closest to store-bought versions of sweet chili sauce.

Makes about 1½ cups 1. In a food processor, combine the chilies, garlic, rice vinegar, sugar, salt, and ½ cup water and blend until pureed.

2. Transfer the mixture to a medium skillet and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, until the liquid is slightly reduced. Whisk the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water until the cornstarch is completely dissolved, then stir it into the chili pepper mixture. Cook, stirring, until the mixture has thickened, another 30 to 60 seconds. Transfer to a bowl to cool and use immediately or store in an airtight container in the fridge.

The refrigerated sweet chili sauce will keep for up to 1 month.

The small grants scheme, funded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, is intended to enable Town and Parish councils, voluntary and community sector organisations and others to: l hold events and festivals l organise COVID recovery community activity l extend access to services, all intended to encourage residents back onto high streets and to utilise arts, cultural and community facilities.

The grants scheme is now open for applications, in line with the Government’s current road map which aims to see a lifting of most remaining restrictions in June.

The total grant fund is currently £250,000, made up of £200,000 from the council’s budget and an additional £50,000 from the council’s public health team. This additional budget is particularly aimed at supporting vulnerable residents to participate in planned activities, particularly those who have been shielding and might

‘If you’ve had a bad day, tell yourself, ‘Tomorrow will be better’ and plan on what you can do to make it that way. Or, if you know you’ve got a Zoom meeting with a tricky client, rather than approaching it with dread, prepare for the challenge and do your best, but afterwards let it go.’

“We have waited a long time for events and festivals to safely return and for COVID recovery community activity, both as examples, to make a difference to our region’s communities and being a big welcome to people’s lives.”

PRACTISE GRATITUDE ‘Gratitude allows you to redirect your focus,’ says Kimberly. ‘When you feel grateful, your mind shifts from what you should have more and shifts your focus to what’s good in your life right now. Practising gratitude is a process of trying your best to see and be thankful for the positives in your life, even in the midst of a difficult situation.’

She adds that negativity often comes from spending too much time on your own and overthinking things. ‘That’s why it’s important to make time for your friends – even if it’s just to meet for a walk or talk on the phone.’

GET ACTIVE ‘Rather than complaining, moaning and feeling sorry for yourself, take a walk, go for a bike ride, or hit the gym,’ says Kimberly. ‘The idea is to get your bodymoving. Physical activity releases endorphins and you’re less likely to feel pessimistic with these feel-good neurochemicals circulating in your body. If you don’t know where to start, download a fitness app.’

REFRAME PAST SETBACKS If you find your mind wandering to a past disappointment, such as a job or relationship that didn’t work out, think of all the details you can remember, trying to be as objective as you can. ‘In what way would you have wanted the situation to turn out better? Now reframe the situation by letting go of what you wanted to happen and write a paragraph or two about what good came out of it,’ says Kimberly. Perhaps you got a better job, or made a new circle of friends.

Manager Appointed as a Director at Hedon Insurance

Hedon Insuance have announced that they have appointed a longstanding employee to the team of Directors.

Having worked in personal lines insurance throughout her career, Sally Needham has been awarded a new role as Company Director.

This appointment will see her work alongside current Directors: Anne Walters, Karen Verschoor-Lowe and Paul Hurford.

With branches in Hull, Hedon, Hornsea and Cottingham, Hedon Insurance continues to provide a local service to local people, having celebrated 50 years in business in 2019.

HEY LEP appoints Business Engagement Board as key Advisory Partner from the private sector

The newly formed Hull and East Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (HEY LEP) has appointed the region’s Business Engagement Board (BEB) as its main private sector Advisory Partner.

The BEB, chaired by Thomas Martin, Chairman of Arco, was formed in Autumn 2020 to ensure continuity in communications between the private and public sectors in the region, whilst the new HEY LEP was being formed. It also led on the recruitment of the new Chair and Deputy Chair for the LEP. Now the HEY LEP is officially active in the region, the BEB will provide a coordinated voice for the region’s business community and will be available to be consulted by the LEP Board on economic issues affecting the private sector in the region. It will also act as the LEPs ‘eyes and ears’ in the region and will work

alongside the LEP to bring business’s influence and views to the attention of the two Councils in the region and Government and to promote the region at national and international level.

The BEB will focus mainly on strategic business needs for the future of our region by prioritising the key business sectors in Hull and East Yorkshire, as well as any important pan-Humber activities. It will also support the LEP in its engagement with Government and in promoting the region at national and international level.

James Newman, Chair of HEY LEP, said: “I am delighted that the Business Engagement Board has agreed to work in partnership with the new HEY LEP. It has done a great job in maintaining private sector involvement during the last six months, whilst the new LEP was being formed.

“Whilst the LEP will continue to

work closely with all business and sector groups as well as individual businesses and organisations in the region, by having the BEB as a strategic partner, the collective and united views of business will be readily available, enabling the LEP to take decisive action with the support of the private sector.

Thomas Martin, Chair of the Business Engagement Board, said: “Now is the time for one region and one collective voice to demonstrate that we are joined up like never before.

We can mobilise our efforts as the BEB membership represents tens of thousands of jobs in the region.

“Working in conjunction with the LEP will ensure we are asking the right questions and demanding the right answers of local and national Government and making us, as a region, much easier to deal with than ever before. We cannot waste the opportunity that awaits everyone in the new HEY region.”

Holiday in Iceland

Geothermal pools, ice-covered volcanoes, towering glaciers – Iceland has one of the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes in Europe. It’s also got unique wildlife and a buzzing cultural scene in Reykjavik and beyond, so no wonder it tops many people’s bucket lists. Now it’s on the UK’s green travel list, this summer looks an ideal time to go. Here’s everything you need to know before you head off…

The second largest island in Europe after the UK, Iceland is home to an impressive landscape, from beautiful lakes in the north to rugged, dramatic scenery in the east. While the winter months are the ideal time for skiing, snowboarding and similar sports, the summer months are ideal for visiting the coast, bathing in natural springs, and hiking. From March to June, visitors can make the most of peak sunlight hours (there are up to 21 hours of daylight) including summer solstice in mid-June, when the midnight sun makes an appearance. With so many things to see and do year round, you’ll want at least a week or two to make the most of what’s on offer.

The country is split into seven regions: Reykjavik: Iceland’s capital, the starting point of most trips, is not to be missed. Check into a guesthouse or hotel to experience a culture and history which dates back to Viking times.

The North: An area of true contrasts, the north brims with mile-long valleys, mountains,

lava fields and a coastline of lush greenery. Vatnajökull national park is worth a visit, as is Ásbyrgi canyon and Dettifoss waterfall – the most powerful in Europe.

The East: This is where you’ll find Iceland’s largest forest, as well as plenty of mountains and streams.

The fjords are a particular highlight in the summer, when visitors can explore the region by boat or kayak.

It’s also worth visiting some of the many fishing villages here.

The Westfjords: Iceland’s northwest corner, known as the Westfjords, is a peaceful region of unspoilt wilderness. Largely uninhabited, its nature reserves teem with wildlife. Don’t miss Dynjandi – another spectacular waterfall.

The South: The southern coastline attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and it’s easy to see why – count on natural wonders like waterfalls, glaciers and lagoons. There are also several museums dedicated to Icelandic heritage.

Reykjanes: This remote region is known for its geothermal activity.

The dramatic landscape has craters, caves, hot springs and lava fields.

Ideal for hiking, its rugged terrain has several waymarked routes to explore. Reykjanes Geopark is a must-see, as is the Viking World museum.

CULTURE Much of Iceland’s allure lies in its landscape, but there are several cultural hotspots to explore too.

Reykjavik has some of the best museums and restaurants. Its Sandholt Bakery makes delicious pastries, while Café Flora, in the Botanic Gardens, serves traditional Icelandic dishes made with local produce. The National Museum is a must-see, as is the Harpa arts centre. Visitors can learn about traditional Icelandic culture at Landnámssýningin, then watch a live music performance at Húrra in the old town. If passing through Laugavegur in the south, be sure to stop off at Hlemmur Mathöll food hall which is known for its smørrebrød (rye bread) and Asian street food.

The West: There’s a bit of everything here, including volcanoes, waterfalls, wildlife and epic national parks. Don’t miss the mysterious volcano Snæfellsjökull which is the source of several ancient legends.

When To Go: Iceland is a yearround destination. To see the Northern Lights and enjoy winter sports, October to March is the best time to visit. April to September is ideal for hiking, cycling and seeing the midnight sun.

WILDLIFE Lovers of the outdoors flock to Iceland for the wildlife. Arctic foxes, Icelandic sheep and native puffins are often spotted by visitors, while several tour operators run sea safaris or hiking trips to see rare bird species. The summer months are the best time to spot humpbacks and blue whales in Skjálfandi Bay where boats head out hourly. You might even see white-beaked dolphins and minke whales. Up north, Iceland’s longest

fjord, Eyjafjörður, is another spot for whales – the waters are much smoother, though sightings aren’t as frequent. For orcas (killer whales), head to Snæfellsnes peninsula. Puffins are also out in full force in summer – drive to the top of Látrabjarg peninsula in the Westfjords to spot them and razorbills. En route, you’re likely to see sheep and horses too. Reindeer can be spotted throughout the countryside and seals are often sighted by Reykjavik’s coastline.

Our first tour took us North to Scotland enjoying fabulous scenery, and wildlife. Dunrobin Castle if you are up that way is well worth a stop . We also enjoyed seeing a 4 day old Reindeer still very wobbly on his legs. Our second tour took us to North Wales where we enjoyed wonderful weather, stunning scenery and amazing gardens. Everywhere we have visited we have been welcomed with open arms.

We are enjoying garden visits in the open air for a change of scenery a day outing is taking baby steps back to travelling. My mum was dubious but after a day at Barnsdale Gardens with afternoon tea she felt so much better.

Getting back to wearing your going out clothes can be difficult, although I travel a lot, having been grounded for several months I just did not know what to pack! I am getting there now. Do remember to plan in advance, check your outfits still fit nicely - it is lovely to dress up a little, wear nice shoes and use a handbag.

STAR OF THE NEW JAZZ AGE!

Roy Woodcock reports on the top-of-therange crossover model unveiled as part of the latest-generation Jazz from Honda. . . .

If you needed any further proof that the crossover craze has taken a firm grip on the car market the new Honda Crosstar surely provides it.

The fact that the Japanese car maker felt compelled to create a jacked-up version of its popular and hugely practical compact hatchback is a sure sign that these pseudo-SUVs are here for the foreseeable future.

The Crosstar sits at the top of the newly-revamped Jazz range offering, says Honda, a more youthful appeal that is aimed at buyers with “active lifestyles” - a phrase much liked by motor industry marketing folk which appears in the advertising blurb for any number of similar vehicles.

The Jazz has been around since 2001 and gone through three previous generations - but none have been quite like this one.

The Crosstar rides 30mm higher than the rest of the range, as well as being slightly longer and wider, and the fashionably rugged SUV-

style presence is created with the addition of a bolder grille, black cladding to the wheel arches and sills, integrated roof rails and silver and black two-tone, 16-inch alloy wheels.

Crosstar buyers can also opt for a model-specific surf blue paint job with a contrasting black roof, while on the inside the upholstery is water repellent - presumably for all those outdoorsy types.

Power comes from a newlydeveloped hybrid system comprising two compact electric motors connected to a 1.5-litre petrol engine, a lithium-ion battery and a continuously variable automatic transmission.

When pootling around town, the Crosstar switches automatically between electric-only EV mode and hybrid drive to maximise efficiency with the petrol engine taking the full load at highway speeds, supplemented by an extra boost from the electric motors for sharp acceleration.

Shifts between the three modes are seamless and the car is punchy and responsive to drive, with an indicator on the instrument panel telling the driver when EV mode is in operation.

The only issue is the engine roar as the CVT catches up when you ask for a quick turn of pace - but this is an affliction of all cars which employ such transmissions and when driven more sedately the Crosstar is pleasingly refined, as you’d expect of a hybrid.

The extra height means a little more body roll in corners than with a normal Jazz and the ride is a little firm and jittery over poorer road surfaces but otherwise comfortable.

Fuel economy and emissions also both take a slight hit when compared to the standard car but at 58.9 miles per gallon on average and 110g/km respectively they’re still respectable and mean running costs should be low.

However, that obviously buys you range-topping equipment as well and the Crosstar is bristling with some pretty decent kit for a small car.

A nine-inch touchscreen infotainment interface incorporates digital radio, navigation and Apple and Android smartphone connectivity as well as a rearview camera, while the audio system is an upgraded one featuring eight speakers.

You also get heated front seats, climate control, keyless entry and ignition, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist and traffic sign recognition.

Motoring

Of course, all of that, except the upgraded audio system, also comes on the standard Jazz EX which is £1,200 cheaper. Whether the fashionable SUV trappings are worth that much extra will ultimately be a personal choice.

Two of the claims are that playing golf makes you healthier and happier and can help prevent and treat depression.

The Club has celebrated the success of one of our lady members whose career began at Beverley at the age she was 21 and she went from strength to strength to become an accomplished golfer playing off a handicap of scratch. Angela says ‘I have always enjoyed sport of any sort and my first love was really tennis table. My love of golf started when I met my husband Chris, who introduced me to the sport and has always been very supportive, especially when the family were young and I was asked to play in national and regional tournaments’.

Recently she represented the Club in the Yorkshire Veterans Championships held at Oakdale Golf Club in Harrogate and played extremely well to finish 5th out of 105 ladies. Subsequently qualifying for the Matchplay event (played over the next two days) where she beat ladies from Keighley and Hallamshire and qualifying for the semi-finals the following day. After a close encounter she lost 2-1 in the semi-finals but was rewarded by being selected for the Yorkshire Veterans team to represent Yorkshire against Durham at Brancepeth Castle at the end of the month. Angela says she is keen to encourage beginners of all ages to play golf and recommends our Academy membership as a fantastic start point for any beginner.

HOW IT HELPS ‘It opens up the front of your body and provides a deep hip extension stretch,’ says Leanne. ‘Additionally, the spinal twist stretches the small muscles between your vertebrae and stimulates blood flow to your spine.’

GETTING INTO POSITION: 1. Start with your right foot forward and your left leg behind you (in a low lunge stance).

2. Keep your left hand on the floor.

Inhale to twist to your right and reach your right hand up towards the ceiling.

3. Let your hips sink down towards the floor and keep your spine long as you twist. Aim for a smooth, even twist throughout your spine.

4. Hold for five deep breaths.

5. Repeat on the second side.

Damp & Shady Plants

Not every garden can enjoy full sun and some get less light and suffer from damp, but don’t despair! We reveal the plants that are happy in damp conditions.

In these climate-changing times, we have to cope with extremes of wetter winters, heavier rainfall and storms, as well as warmer, drier temperatures. Mediterranean plants definitely don’t appreciate their roots sitting in soggy soil, so if your garden tends towards the damp and maybe boggy, too, it’s wise to choose plants that will be happy in these conditions.

Damp growing spaces can come in a few different varieties. There are outand-out boggy, riverside or pondside areas that might also be prone to flooding during wetter weather. Or you might have heavy clay soil that gets sticky and boggy in wet winters but can dry out in the summer. Perhaps you have a tricky spot that tends to stay damp and shady, where the soil holds onto moisture and remains cool, similar to the edge of a woodland.

As always, nature provides the solution to all these problems in plants that are perfectly adapted to these conditions. There are shrubs and perennials that span a wide range of interest to give you seasonal colour, texture and structure right through the year and many of them are magnets for pollinators, too.

From the first appearance of primulas and marsh marigolds in spring and irises in early summer, the damp garden is full of colour.

You can carry this right through into autumn with successional planting.

There are so many damp-friendly perennials to choose from, right across the colour spectrum. Astilbes come in hundreds of shades from white through pink to deep red, while persicarias will bring more ruby and white tones, rudbeckias and ligularias will add some sunny golden zing with their daisy-like flowers.

Adding foliage plants Foliage plants also come into their own in damp areas, with giant Gunnera manicata making the biggest statement of all. But if you don’t have room for this monster, the diminutive G. magellanica makes great ground cover.

Japanese petasites, which is also edible, puts on a wonderful, lush foliage display, but needs room to spread. For smaller spaces, hostas and ferns will transform shady areas into cool green havens.

Some of the best shrubs to combine with perennials in moisture-retentive soil in a layered planting scheme are salixes and cornus. These look great both in waterside locations, and in mixed borders, where the coloured stems are great for winter effects and the summer foliage makes a good companion for the more brilliant flowering perennials.

Plants for damp soil Lythrum salicaria ‘Robert’ (above) With its upright spikes of bright-pink flowers, loose strife will naturalise on the edges of ponds and waterways. Great for pollinators, the autumn colouring of the foliage is an added bonus.

Astilbe ‘Fanal’ (x arendsii) AGM The long-flowering red feathery plumes of Astilbe ‘Fanal’ make a real statement and the foliage contrasts with bolder leaves.

They will tolerate a shadier damp spot, but for the best results full sun is preferable.

Lobelia cardinalis A dazzling plant, with its dark-red foliage contrasting with brilliant red flowers, this needs moist soil and will look fantastic teamed with ligularia and rodgersia . HxS: 3x1ft (90x30cm).

Top Tips

Very wet soils can cause roots to rot as there isn’t enough oxygen for healthy growth. The best way to improve soggy soils and heavy clay is to dig in plenty of organic matter.

This will improve the soil structure and drainage, reducing compaction and allowing nutrients to reach the roots.

It will also help to hold onto moisture through dry summers.

Adding a thick mulch in spring around plants will help to stop clay soil drying out, too.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Getting back to normal

Holidays, indoor eating and drinking plus theatres, cinemas and museums are all back on the menu! And let’s not forget hugging your nearest and dearest again. So how are you feeling? Happy to be out and about? Or a little more reserved, taking it slowly? There’s no right or wrong way – and don’t let anyone tell you differently! You have to do what feels most comfortable for you. But I can’t help feeling so much more optimistic!

I’m having my second jab this month, so I will be fully vaccinated (a big thank you to all those involved in the vaccination programme). A note of caution though – washing your hands, social distancing and mask wearing are still good rules to live by – and are still required in certain places.

Shout out for exam pupils

This is a huge well done to all those who have just finished their GCSE, ‘A’ Level, BTech and other vocational assessments.

It has been so hard for them, with so much disruption in these critical years.

And while they may not have had formal exams, they have had so many assessments, they must all be exhausted!

Let’s hope that they can have a good break over the summer holidays now before they start the next chapter of their lives, whether that is in 6th form, at a college, starting an apprenticeship, reading for a degree at university or entering the wonderful world of employment!

Duck eggs better for baking

Did you know that duck eggs are better for baking? How have I never heard of that before? The reason I found out was that my friend gave me some of her duck eggs the other week and said they were particularly good for baking. So, as I do with most things, I did my research.

Apparently, duck eggs have slightly more protein in their whites which helps cakes rise better – and I must say my cakes have been much lighter and fluffier when I’ve used them!
