BeverleyMag January 2016 Dear Readers Welcome to the January edition of your Beverley Mag and may I start by wishing all our readers, advertisers and contributors a very prosperous New Year from the whole team here at Beverley Mag. In this month’s edition we have lots of local news as well as a many interesting features and articles to keep you informed and up to date with all that is happening in and around Beverley in the New Year.

If you are still thinking about New Years resolutions we have a New Year, New You feature which may or may not spark some interest if you are thinking about life changes in 2016. It’s All Good News!

December saw real progress with my fair school funding campaign, which regular readers may remember I talked about in an article a few months ago. Following a successful Parliamentary debate on the issue in November, I coordinated a presentation of public petitions calling for fair funding from over 100 constituencies in the House of Commons chamber – including the petition from Beverley and Holderness, signed by 2,287 constituents. Thank you to everyone who signed!

The good news is that the Chancellor has now confirmed that the Government will consult on a new national funding formula early this year, based on a proper assessment of pupil need. This has the potential to deliver millions more to East Riding schools, which currently fall victim to an arbitrary and unfair system that simply locks in the amount local authorities spent on education decades ago. The campaign will not be complete until extra resource actually flows to our local schools, and I will be keeping up the pressure on Ministers, but I am optimistic we are closing in on our goal.

Another major constituency concern is climate change and flood protection. An important milestone was achieved in July when the new River Hull Flood Risk Management Strategy was agreed, which includes removing sunken vessels, raising river banks at

certain points and upgrading pumping stations. This amounts to a £45 million package designed to protect Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire. However, there is more to do, and following the devastating floods in Cumbria I took the opportunity to remind the Environment Secretary Liz Truss in Parliament of the need to do more for the East Riding. I will meet Floods Minister Rory Stewart shortly.

When it comes to the fight against climate change, December also saw me in Paris for the successful climate talks held there. I chair GLOBE International, a group of hundreds of legislators worldwide who campaign for sustainable development. The new Paris Agreement paves the way to limit the rise in global temperatures to well below two degrees Centigrade, which is vital to protect vulnerable coastal regions like Holderness.

Minding the Minster

Dad’s Army & Victoria!

As always, the change from the old year to a new gives us all the chance to stand back; think about what has happened and make plans for the future.

Last year was strange in certain respects. For no single reason that we can see, in the second half of 2015 there was a considerable drop in the number of people who wanted to go up in the roof of the Minster to enjoy a truly unique and world-class tourist experience. Maybe everyone in Beverley has already done it – although some individuals return three or even four times – but that can’t be the sole reason.

Perhaps it’s thanks to a general change in the type of people who visited the Minster this year. It’s not something I’ve assessed scientifically but I’ve had the impression that we’ve not seen as high a proportion of younger people, families and couples, walking around the nave

during the day. If that’s right then we can probably expect an upturn next year when Beverley appears on the TV and in the cinemas.

Last year part of the bigscreen remake of “Dad’s Army” was filmed in Beverley, and several scenes for the new ITV drama ‘Victoria’ – which they hope will fill the ‘Downton Abbey’ slot – were shot in Beverley Minster itself.

There is currently some talk of the crew returning to film more scenes over the next few months.

We know how TV can boost visitor numbers – after our appearance on ‘Antiques Roadshow’ in 2010 we saw a noticeable upturn – so perhaps we virgers will be belting up and down the Central Tower in 2016 like pistons in a machine.

I think we’d better start getting ready for what’s to come.

in Beverley throughout 2015.

Something new was brought to Beverley during November 2014 with the launch of the Quiet Riot gig at Hodgson’s which attracted a hundred people to see a great line up of local acts including the much touted Ming City Rockers (pictured right). This evening was to be the beginning of monthly gigs at this venue which has seen 40 of the best unsigned artists from the region playing in Beverley.

Live Music in Beverley created an album during 2015. An album featuring 23 of the best unsigned bands was released in January and is still available from Minster Records whilst the organisers were invited to run stages at Cottingham Springboard, Hedfest in Hedon, The Hull Marathon and also the East Yorkshire Show & Family Fun Day at Brantingham Park.

Band, Mighty and the Moon (pictured above), Breeze, Cuba Drive,Queenan Cox, Copenhagen and Jackson D. These can be heard regularly on Radio Humberside through Burnsy on a morning or BBC Introducing on Saturday evening. These are just a small selection of the people who have appeared and the Beverley music fans have loved every gig throughout the year and also seeing local acts or performers with Beverley connections such as the The Velvet Dolls, Behind Closed Doors, Sea of Wires, Rivers Johansson , Imogen Hart and The Supersonic Jets.

Look forward to seeing further developments from Quiet Riot in the new year. As well as regular gigs in Beverley the concept may spread its wings to other towns such as Driffield and a fundraiser for the Hull Homeless Outreach Service is to be held at St Mary’s Church in Hull during late January. More top local acts who could not be fitted in during 2015 are planned to appear during the coming months as the nights reputation grows stronger and highly regarded Holy Orders are pencilled in for February. The evenings are usually held on the last Friday of every month and you can follow developments on the Facebook page Quiet Riot Beverley.

The first year has been a great success and more will follow during 2016. Quiet Riot have also been involved in two festivals and

Sale of the centuries Christmas is over, but the shopping frenzy continues as we finish with Black Fridays and Panic Saturdays, and move onto the January Sales bonanza.

It seems like, these days, the shops are never shut and we spend our lives queuing for the bargain of the century - but has it really always been like this?

Well, apart from the fact that shops used to be closed on Sundays, the appetite for a good sale bargain has always been there: Documents at the East Riding Archives in Beverley show that while the Shops Act 1912 ensured

opening hours were closely regulated with a weekly half holiday in which shops closed at 1pm on Thursdays; local businesses in our region could open until 7pm during the week and 10pm on Saturdays – not much different to nowadays.

Archivist, Sam Bartle said: “We’ve been trawling through the archives uncovering images of shops from the early 20th century to see what shopping was like in those days, and the main difference between then and now appears to be that shops were smaller and more locally-oriented.”

East Riding walking netball setting national example A walking netball programme which started in the East Riding just three months ago is proving so popular that England Netball plan to use it to promote the sport nationally.

Since the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Sport, Play and Arts service started up the walking netball sessions in Haltemprice the numbers of those attending every week has doubled.

Now England Netball, the national body for the promotion of the sport, is to feature the East Riding based sessions in a promotional film to try and encourage more players across the country to get involved.

Walking netball is aimed at ladies over the age of 50 who may previously have enjoyed the sport and would like to play again, try something new, get a bit fitter or just meet new people in a fun and friendly setting.

Sarah Johnson, community recreation officer with the council’s Sport, Play and Arts Service, said: “Walking netball is a relatively new sport with only a very small number of sessions running in the country at the moment. “But it is growing in popularity and the interest and support that we have had from England Netball shows just how much potential this has to become an established and

much loved sport and it is great that we as a local authority can play a part in that.”

The sessions are played on a reduced size court with adapted rules at East Riding Leisure Haltemprice every Thursday 10.4511.45am and costs £2 per session.

The sessions for 2015 have now finished for the year but the 2016 programme re-starts on 7 January.

The sessions are supported by England Netball development officer Pauline Hardy who added: “Walking netball really is a fantastic way for ladies to get a little bit fitter while enjoying all the fun and excitement of a game of netball.

“Anyone who would like to try something new, re-discover a love of the game, or just meet like-minded people in a friendly environment, should come along to these sessions and discover for themselves what is proving to be so popular.”

Stay active and engaged this winter East Riding residents are being encouraged to stay active and socially engaged this winter thanks to free guided walks that are taking place whatever the weather.

And organisers want to recruit more volunteers to lead walks in their local area, especially shorter 30 minute walks aimed at those who are less mobile or fit.

The East Riding’s ‘Walking for Health’ programme, which operates all year round, has so far helped almost 2,000 people to become more active, get back on their feet after illness or injury or to simply make new friends.

Anyone, regardless of age or ability, who has an interest in walking, wants to slowly introduce exercise into their daily routine after illness or injury, wants to get fit or boost their mental well-being, can get involved.

It is part of the National Walking for Health programme which is governed by Macmillan Cancer Care and the Ramblers Association. Councillor Jonathan Owen, chairman of the East Riding Health and Wellbeing Board, said: “The colder weather may be here but don’t

For swimmers there is a wonderful pool located on the beach. When the tide goes out it is a great place to take a dip. In fact the island boasts 45 miles of beautiful beaches. If water & the beach is not your style don’t worry there are many places of interest on the Island.

Whilst in St Helier why not visit the Howard Davies Park, often there is music on the bandstand and the gardens are lovely to stroll around. On a more serious note there is a war memorial that is well worth a visit too. If war time is of interest to you then the island offers many more sights from these times including the underground war tunnels & Liberation Square, all within a short walk or bus ride.

The island is very easy to travel around & the bus service is excellent. Of course there are also many organised tours with guides to enhance your experience. Should you wish to hire a car and enjoy the island at your own pace car hire is cheap. Beware of the very narrow green lanes, but with a speed limit of 15 miles per hour the country lanes are very manageable.

The shore line is ever changing from flat sweeping bays to castles & lighthouses perched on rocky headlands. Corbiere Lighthouse, shown opposite, is one of the islands great landmarks.

The island is a walkers paradise with many guided walks offered from easy and flat to those for the more serious walkers looking for a challenge.

If you would like to see the island from a different perspective why not take an excursion by boat?

Other attractions include the Durell Zoo who focus on wildlife conservation, Potteries, Jersey Pearl or why not visit the Vineyard.

For food lovers there are so many restaurants to choose from you will be spoilt for choice, seafood is advertised in abundance.

Should you fancy exploring further afield why not hop on a ferry. These depart from the harbour in St Helier. It is possible to enjoy a day in France (passport required) or other nearby Channel Islands of Herm, Sark, Guernsey or Alderney.

10 Business Ideas for 2016 What businesses can you get off the ground fast without having to spend lots to set up?

Steve Mann, head of finance at Dalton Spire Ltd, picks 10 of the best: Take a look around you this morning as you drive or catch the train to work.

From the window cleaner who arrives on your street as you close the front door behind you to the coffee cart serving cappuccinos the world is full of thriving and profitable small businesses that have been set up for relatively little initial outlay.

These are not ‘clever’ businesses trading on the strength of innovative new products and nor do they require the backing of deep-pocketed investors to get them off the ground. They succeed because their owners are responding to genuine demand for tried and trusted services.

And with a low initial outlay and overheads, many of these small-scale ventures can be profitable within weeks or months and over time provide their owners with a good income.

So how do you get started? Well, to give you an idea of how it’s done, here are 10 great businesses ideas I’ve come across that you can get up and running within weeks.

1. Mopping up – household cleaning The lower your outlay, the faster you turn a profit and that’s one of the big attractions of launching a domestic cleaning business. For instance Millie Dark, founder of Sussex cleaners, Mrs Muscle started her company with no real investment. “My customers supply all the equipment and cleaning products,” explains Millie.

2. On cloud K9 – dog walking A dog walking and pet sitting service can also be set up with minimal investment. For instance, when Catherine Cleaver started her business – Catherine’s Pet Services – all she needed was £500 for a couple of garden kennels. Catherine placed a few ads in shop windows. Over time – and with the help of word of mouth recommendation and ads in the local magazine – what started as a part-time activity became a full time job.

3. Cutting it – home hairdressing Many hairdressers dream of starting their own businesses but are deterred by the cost of renting a salon. Setting up a home visit service can be an ideal way forward. There is a significant outlay on brushes, tongs, dryers, mirrors and products. Customers expect to see the same products they find in a salon. Customers will also expect evidence of recognised skills.

4. A caffeine hit – mobile coffee bar We’re a coffee hungry nation and beyond Starbucks and Costa there are thousands of small mobile barista carts selling lattes on the go.

“A coffee maker will cost about £5,000,” says Beth Baxter, co-founder of Camper Cafe. “And then you have to pay for the cart or a van to put it in.”

Finding pitches is the most challenging aspect as you are often in competition with other vendors.

5. Juiced perfect – mobile juice bar The rise of coffee carts has been matched by the emergence of juice bars in markets, shopping malls, public thoroughfares and events. The set-up costs are similar to coffee in terms of equipment and training.

6. Bright idea – window cleaning If you have a car with a roof rack you can start a window cleaning business for a few hundred pounds (bucket, ladder, clothes, etc). Alternatively you might invest in high pressure pure water sprays, water tanks (around £2,000) and a van to carry them (say £15,000).

7. Showing drive – ‘Man in a Van’ business Advertisements for ‘Man in a Van’ and ‘Light Removals’ services are a common sight on shop window advertising boards. The pre-requisite is probably a Luton-style box van with tail lift - that’s also the main expense.

8. Highest bidder – an eBay business Launching an eBay business allows you reach a national and occasionally an international market. You can auction goods or sell at a fixed price.

Most eBay businesses will pay at least £19.99 per month as a subscription fee (rising to £59.99 for a featured shop and £349 for an ‘Anchor Shop’) and on top of that you will pay fees for each auction or fixed price insertion.

9. A gem of a business – jewellery and crafts Many small businesses are based around the skills of their founders. For instance, if you have training as a jeweller or sculptor, an obvious way to sell your work is to market direct to the public via web, craft fairs or through shops.

10. Snappy work – photography Photography is another skills-based business. Go to almost any event – from music gigs to vintage car rallies and weddings and you’ll find photographers hard at work.

Very different businesses but all can be started quickly and easily using readily available equipment or existing skills. Importantly most of these businesses take payment either at the point of sale or soon after and that’s great for cashflow.

Chatting with a Juicing Expert Andrew Mann a health and wellness pro talks about benefits of juicing and how to get started With the start of a new year comes the hopes and dreams that we can make this year better than the last.

As we set our intentions and goals for the year ahead, research shows improving health — whether it’s losing weight, eating healthily, or getting fit — always tops the list.

So what’s your plan of attack this 2016? If you’re anything like me, you’re always on the lookout for that one thing that will really kickstart the momentum towards a healthier new you.

Enter: The Juice Cleanse.

The idea of cleansing has been around for ages, but what exactly is a juice cleanse? What are the benefits, why should we do it, and where the heck do we start? To answer many of these questions and more, I sat down with Andrew Mann, fellow Holistic Health Coach and all around juicing expert, to get all the juicy details:

So Andrew, before we get started, let’s make sure we’re on the same page. When we talk about juice and juice

cleanses, what exactly is meant by the term juice? Because I’m pretty sure all the hype isn’t about that gallon of apple juice hanging out in the grocery aisle.

That’s right. Juice, as we refer to it here, is prepared strictly from fresh fruits and vegetables. This means no added sugars, preservatives, or artificial anything. These fresh juices boast amazing tastes and colors and contain many of the vitamins and minerals essential for good health.

So what’s your personal background as it relates to juicing and juice cleanses?

I was not feeling well a few years ago and I was given a juicer as a gift. I made myself a carrot-apple-ginger drink on a Sunday morning and I felt an amazing energy burst that morning. So I made another one that afternoon. Fast forward, and for the next 45 days I only drank juice and did not eat any food. I never felt so good in my life. I watched the pounds shed, my energy increase, my skin glow, and felt amazing.

Sounds like the benefits were pretty immediate. What else did you notice?

A quick initial weight loss. I felt lighter, healthier, and all around cleaner. My skin cleared up, but most of all I had tons of energy.

45 days is pretty extreme, how long would you recommend others do a juice cleanse?

I suggest that you listen to your body and let your body tell you.

New Year, New You You will feel so great during the juicing, allow your body to tell you when it is time to slow down or stop.

Will you still be juicing? I suggest a raw food diet after juicing to gently ease your body back to foods.

What were the first 24 hours like?

The first 24 hours are the toughest. Once you make it past 24 hours, your body understands what is going on and you can sustain this for as long as your body tells you to. During the first 24-36 hours, you can be a little irritable, have cravings, or some mild stomach cramps.

Can people include food into a juice cleanse? Is there still a benefit?

There are no rules in my book. I do not suggest the food, however, I would rather 2 juices a day with food over zero juices per day. There is certainly still a benefit, by getting all of the micronutrients from the juices into ones system.

How do you combat the cravings for real food?

The cravings for food go away after about 36 hours. Drink plenty of water. Homemade almond milk is a great filler for the cravings if absolutely necessary.

How would you recommend starting?

Start with juices that are enjoyable to taste. Once you get through the first 24 hours, you can start to reduce the sugary ones, and your taste buds will begin to change and crave the greener juices! This is VERY beneficial.

What about all the sugar?

During a juice cleanse, or juicing, you need to watch the amount of sugars. As you get further into the cleanse, begin to reduce the amount of sugar intake. Substitute with more greens as opposed to fruits, which will reduce the amount of sugar. Naturally, your body will automatically begin to crave sugar less and less.

What are the do’s and don’ts for before and after a cleanse?

Have a plan ready for before and after. Some suggestions for before are: Drink plenty of water, eat very light for 1 to 2 weeks before, eliminate meat and dairy if you can, and have your juicing tools and foods all ready to go. After, have a plan on what you will be eating.

What do people need to get started?

You need a juicer! I suggest a good knife, peeler, a strainer for your sink, a pitcher that can measure ounces, and a good supplier of preferably organic local produce.

If someone was looking for more resources and information, where would you point them?

There are many great resources out there. From real life health coaches, to online articles as well as books. The Earth Diet book includes some fantastic juicing recipes. I would also watch the movie, “Fat Sick and Nearly Dead.” That has been and continues to be very motivating for people all over the world.

January Gardener In January, your garden could need protecting from frosts, gale-force winds and heavy rain. Check stakes, ties, fleeces and other supports for damage and consider moving plants to sunnier positions to maximize light.

Don’t forget to keep feeding the birds, food is scarce for them over winter. You can also start planning next year’s vegetable plot.

Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough to brave the elements, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels!

When the weather allows, carry on clearing paths of moss and leaves.

After heavy snowfall, gently brush snow off conifers and hedges to stop the weight forcing them apart. If you have a chance, pack the branches of tender trees and shrubs with straw and secure with fleece to protect them from the cold; thick dry mulches will also protect roots from freezing conditions.

If you haven’t already done this, lay old carpeting or something similar over cold frames to protect them and check the insulation in greenhouses and that heaters are working properly.

When soil conditions allow, continue to dig over beds and borders, incorporating as much organic matter as you can. Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for next year, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds.

Weeds - sadly many will survive the cold weather so once the soil is workable, hoe away before they leap into action in the spring.

Take care not to let leaves accumulate around alpines - they will die if left damp for long. Cover bare patches around clumps with gritty compost to encourage regrowth.

Let them eat cake (bird cake that is!)

The last few months has been unusually mild so far, resulting in plenty of natural food for birds but, once this starts to run out, you’ll see more birds arriving at your feeders.

A bird’s body clock works on daylight hours, so in the winter months there are great opportunities to view the birds feeding at first light, which can become a bit of a feeding frenzy. If you watch your garden birds regularly you’ll notice that they’ll come down to feed again in the late afternoon, before they go and find somewhere to roost overnight.

It’s hard to believe but during cold weather birds can lose up to 40 per cent of their weight overnight just trying to keep warm.

Food that’s high in energy is fantastic for birds in the winter month - peanuts, fat or suet based foods, seed mixes that contain sunflower seeds or hearts, mealworms and fruit will all go down well. You can also make your own fat balls and cake mix using lard and suet – a great rainy day activity with the kids or grandkids!

Place lard and suet at room temperature in a mixing bowl, add in uncooked porridge oats, mild grated cheese, peanuts, sultanas, raisins and bird seed. Mix it all together and roll into balls or use shallow dishes to create bird cake. Put them in the fridge to set, and when they are solid place them outside.

However remember not to feed turkey fat to feed your birds as it’s too soft and can get into their feathers, which can cause problems.

purchases. This could save you hundreds of

pounds in interest charges.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS – GOT TO GET THIS RIGHT! I did it again! I had it all planned out to be incredibly organised before Christmas and I still ended up running around like an idiot just a few days before!

Thank God for internet shopping! So at the top of my list again this year is to be organised! I do pretty well most of the time, but once one thing falls behind, everything else just follows!

So you’ll be pleased to hear that I’m not going to beat myself up about it, I’m just going to plan this year more carefully.

In fact I may even plan extra time in to cope with any unexpected surprises!

38 I am also going to start juicing again in my continuing

effort to stay as healthy as I can! That was something else that fell by the wayside at the back end of last year.

And you may remember one of my resolutions from last year was to try to get to bed before midnight!

Yes, well, that’s still on my list!

So what are you going to do? Having a goal is a great way to start the year. Don’t dwell on failures, concentrate on the positives and let’s believe we’re going to succeed!

Being nice to fellow shoppers!

Just a gentle reminder that while we’re rooting around the sales (unless you’re all doing it online!) spare a thought for your fellow shoppers! You know I have a huge “thing” about manners, so try not to get all steamed up pushing your way through the crowds.

Remember to smile at others, give way to people in the shopping centres when you’re rushing to grab a bargain and hold doors open for the person behind you. If we can all do that, then it might just make the whole experience a bit more pleasant!

Remember, new year, fresh start! So let’s not all turn in to bad-tempered shopping demons!
