Introduction by the Principal and Chairman

The last year was another excellent one, with Godalming College students enjoying a sixth form education amongst the country’s best.

The summer’s examination results, summarized below, maintained the College’s high standards. The improved A–B pass rate at A level and the clean sheet at Intermediate stood out. Beyond the classroom, the flow of successes in drama, music and sport continued unabated.

Students reaped the benefits of the extensive building work of the last few years that has yielded the Learning

Resource Centre, the Performing Arts Centre, the Piazza, refurbished maths, science and arts accommodation and the Sports Centre, used for the first time in June for an evening to celebrate our students’ accomplishments (as detailed elsewhere in this report).

As always, the successes of the last year could not have achieved without the efforts and talents of the students and the commitment and expertise of

staff, senior managers and Corporation members. We should like to express our gratitude to them all.

At the end of the year, the Corporation decided to close the College’s separate adult education arm, because of issues beyond the College’s control. The decision was taken with deep regret, but it has enabled the College to concentrate all its financial resources and educational focus on its sixth form mission.

The College celebrated another year of high achievement in 2008–09 2009 A level results • 99 per cent overall pass rate • 100 per cent pass rate in 33 of the A level subjects offered • 61 per cent out of 2041 exam entries achieved an A or B grade • 64 per cent achieved a Distinction in vocational Sport and Business courses ANNUAL REPORT 2008 – 09

Teaching and learning

During the past year advancements have continued to be made to the student teaching and learning experience, this has included: • The continued development of Godalming Online, our eLearning network; • Major enhancements to independent learning technology include an upgrade of college systems to Windows Office 2007; • A cross campus wireless network; • The trial use of laptops as a teaching resource, to be extended and to include netbooks and iPod touch devices.

The focus has been on: • Developing skills needed for higher education and employment; • Using formative assessment, including self and peer assessment, to help students improve the quality of their work.

Courses Our first learners completed the BTEC National Diploma in Sports Development and Fitness. This two-year course is equivalent to three A levels and gives students the opportunity to go on to study a variety of degree courses in sports/fitness related fields.

Enrolment began on AS/A level Food Technology and the BTEC National Award and Certificate for IT Practitioners.

Twelve courses designed to broaden a student’s perspective on important issues and to provide useful life skills are now offered as part of the upper sixth additional studies programme. They include: The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) Excellent preparation for undergraduate study and employment, students develop a range of independent study techniques by focussing on a topic related to one or more of their A level courses. Of the 81 students who took this AS equivalent qualification in 2009, 55 achieved an A or A* grade.

Rockschool Award for Music Practitioners The contemporary music course for anyone interested in playing in and/or stage managing a band. It provides all students who want to develop an interest the chance to improve their skills and to gain a level 2 or 3 qualification. So far, four events have been successfully staged at the College and at The Boileroom in Guildford and almost one hundred students are currently working towards the award.

Citizenship Combining the study of Politics, Law and Sociology, this AS level course recognizes a student’s involvement in college activities/events or volunteering/ community service undertaken outside the campus such as The Chandler Junior School’s Fun Day. The College’s Student Activities Fair is another opportunity to find out more about how to contribute to local community services and to volunteer for regional and national charities.

Working with youth volunteering organization Surrey vinvolved, students have taken part in a Superheroes fashion show event, prepared an allotment for use by the Alzheimer’s Society in Godalming and volunteered at an event in aid of Chase Children’s Hospice.

The College is currently piloting a reading scheme involving student volunteers working in partnership with local primary schools.

Godalming students volunteered on community projects in both India (pictured) and Kenya during overseas expeditions in summer 2009.

PE and sport students have completed almost 1000 hours of voluntary community service on the Step into Sport programme.

In 2008–09 students stepped up to the challenge of numerous competitive events and developed new skills on enrichment activities organized by the College.

Sport • It was the best season ever for the men’s rugby squad who reached the national semi finals of the British Colleges Sports Cup. • The Netball 1st team won the South East BCS Cup. • In the Surrey Sixth Forms League Godalming was crowned shield winners for the fourth time in five years having won every 1st team league – Basketball, Football, Hockey, Netball and Rugby, and 2nd team Netball.

• At other inter-college tournaments Godalming won the Surrey Sixth Forms Cricket League, Surrey Indoor Rowing Competition and the Mixed Rounders.

• Almost 200 students competed in the College’s popular 5-a-side FA Cup tournament.

Music • Students achieved nine 1st places at the Woking Music Festival including the Balfour Cup, the Best Overall Choir and the Borelli Cup; vocalist Lizzie Rogers and trombonist Jane Salmon also performed at the Woking Young Musician of the Year Competition.

• The string quartet was Highly Commended in the Pro Corda National Chamber Music Festival and Competition.

• 35 separate entries performed at the Godalming Music Festival; 1st places included the cello ensemble and the saxophone trio; the jazz band won the Jericho Cup and vocalist Lavinia Fitzpatrick was named Singer of the Year.

• Student compositions and more contemporary popular music have featured at college music concerts; student recitals have ranged from piano to jazz bass guitar.

• The music concert series welcomed visiting professional musicians.

Drama, Performing Arts and Dance • There were 50 different productions during 2008–09; • 33 nights of performance in the new performing arts centre; • 34 lunchtime studio performances; • Professional practice workshops in association with Central School of Speech and Drama.

• All students studying performing arts took part in skills development workshops including, vocals, choreography, African/street dance, yoga and meditation.

Debating Students applied their presentation skills in the National Youth Parliament Competition; the Surrey heat of the Institute of Ideas Debating Matters Competition and the Rotary Public Speaking Competition.

Maths and Science Pitting themselves against the best in the region, students entered the Surrey Satro (Science and Technology) Problem Solving Competition. Stephen Clarke, Louisa Coughtrey, Ben James and Oliver Sopp qualified for the British Mathematical Olympiad.

English Poet Laureate Andrew Motion introduced English Literature students to the life and times of his friend Philip Larkin during a visit to the College.

HARNESSING AN ALTERNATIVE POWER SOURCE science students reached for the skies in the NPL Water Rocket Challenge.

The Emerging Talent Arts Festival Scar Tissue (below) our National Lottery funded new showcased the outstanding quality of writing project saw twenty students working alongside a visual and performing arts at Godalming. professional playwright from the Royal Court Theatre; peer to peer education workshops in secondary schools and the final production premiered in the Performing Arts Centre.

Student voice

The views and opinions of our students matter and they continue to have the ability to influence both the individual and the collective learning experience.

Students are currently represented on a number of staff/student groups including: • Catering Liaison • Equal Opportunities • Health and Safety • Environment • Curriculum • Extended Student Support • Teaching and Learning

In September 2010 our current Student Council is turning into a Student Union with affiliation to the National Union of Students. Five executive posts of President, Vice President, Social Secretary, Treasurer and Charities Officer will be created, or, students can stand for election as a Union Rep. We are currently looking at several ways to reduce environmental costs: • The College has updated its environmental policy and has signed up to the Government 10:10 initiative.

• New recycling bins for metal cans and plastics have been sponsored

by Coca-Cola and installed around the campus; we also have additional paper recycling facilities.

• The College’s new Power Out initiative automatically switches off all student computers after

75 minutes of inactivity; all of our computers automatically switch off after 7pm.

• Car-sharing is actively encouraged and staff can use the Cycle to Work scheme.

• An Energy Saving Week is planned for 2010.

GODALMING COLLEGE

The annual Cycle to College Day gave students the opportunity to compete in a lunch time cycle race on the campus.

The Piazza won the Environmental Enhancement category in the 2009 Waverley Design Awards.

Student support for charities

The Student Activities team organized student balls, Red Nose Day and fun days throughout 2008–09.

Rag Week was the most successful ever and enabled us to support the Guildford Rape & Sexual Abuse Support Centre, Make a Wish Foundation UK, Help for Heroes, Amnesty International and Kids for Kids. 1,500 students attended the sellout Rag Ball.

In addition, collections at performing arts productions raised over £1000 for the National Aids Trust, Breast Cancer Awareness and Missing People.

The Amnesty International group ran several activities to raise awareness

during Rag Week; a letter writing campaign focussing on the rights of women in Iran started in 2008–09, students also wrote to authorities in Vietnam to protest against the death penalty and campaigned against press censorship in China and Sri Lanka.

In March the College successfully received re-accreditation to the Investors in People standard for our ongoing commitment to improving the management and development of both teaching and support teams.

Remembering: the College held a memorial event for Malcolm Rollisson, the former Head of English who retired in 2003 and died in 2009.

Working together

During 2008–09 the College has collaborated with other educational institutions, businesses and local organizations.

Local schools The Waverley Federation – Broadwater School, Glebelands School, Godalming College, Gosden House School, Rodborough Technology College and Woolmer Hill School, has continued to develop the curriculum for 14–16 year olds and to support progression to A level or equivalent qualifications.

2009 saw the first recipients of the BTEC First Diploma in Media (equivalent to four GCSEs) with 72 per cent achieving the top A and B grades; on the part-time BTEC First Diploma in Business course, an outstanding 78 per cent achieved the top grades. Godalming Enrichment Modules continue to be popular with year 11s; following the eight session physics course over 50 per cent of the students went on to enrol for the AS level programme.

• Childcare students delivered story sacks and science boxes to local junior schools as part of a project designed to encourage children’s literacy and numeracy skills.

• Ignition dance performances featured over 60 students from Rodborough, St. Edmund, Glebelands, Broadwater, Busbridge and Tomlinscote School.

• GD2 Dance, our Key Stage 4 afterschool group has performed as part of a Surrey wide Dance Platform in Guildford and at college events.

• One-to-one student science mentoring and GCSE Italian are among the options currently on offer to local schools.

Surrey sixth form colleges The S7 Colleges Consortium – Esher, Godalming, Reigate, Strodes and Woking College, is currently involved in eight research projects that involve at least two of the colleges working together to discover something new, they include: • Developing different methods of capturing student feedback; • Promoting collaborative learning – teacher to student, and student to student, through the provision of an online space; • Using video footage within online course management systems to enable peer and self assessment of dance performances;

• Involving sixth formers in the design of online surveys to measure their knowledge, lifestyle and attitudes against peers, other colleges and with the population as a whole.

From April 2010 Sixth Form Colleges will become a separate legal entity retaining their status as independent corporations under the auspices of the Department for Children, Families and Schools.

The transition (from the Learning and Skills Council) to the Local Authority assuming full responsibility for funding and strategy in 14–19 education is already well underway; S7 Colleges have been advising Surrey County Council as part of this process.

Support from Fleetcroft Guitars saw the donation of 20 new amplifiers to the College’s music department in 2008–09.

Working together (continued)

Employers 2008–09 saw the College deliver training and assessment to support adult skills development both in the workplace and through community learning provision.

New programmes included: • Introductory and certificate courses for teachers in the lifelong learning sector; • The CIEH short course in healthier foods and special diets; • Skills for life courses for the National Autistic Society; • Cultural skills and English skills for migrant workers; • Short courses in food hygiene and in health and safety for Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust.

Social care assessors from across Surrey took part in continuing professional development workshops and the first students graduated from the Foundation Degree in Social Care: Leadership and Management delivered by the College, in association with Farnborough College of Technology.
