AI in the Workforce
Guest Writer: Jordan O’Connell, Instructional Designer and Instructor, NICC
Artificial intelligence (AI) is here and changing how we work in northeast Iowa. From automating repetitive tasks to supporting complex decisionmaking, recent breakthroughs in machine learning and neural networks have emerged as a potential economic accelerator across local industries. At Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), we are focused on helping our communities understand how AI will impact not only our business partners, but the employees and families who sustain the region’s economy.
We see firsthand the interest AI is generating across our service area. Last year, NICC hosted AIfocused community education classes at places like Lansing Works, the Social Center in Dyersville and virtually online. These events drew folks from a wide range of industries, experiences and backgrounds, with many participants interested in AI’s entrepreneurial potential.
We are having important discussions about what AI means for education both inside and outside of our classrooms. Many instructors see student use of AI as a catalyst that can drive real improvements in the ways we teach and assess learning, beginning in our online learning spaces.
This semester, my online U.S. History students are using AI tools to collaborate on a research project I’ve been kicking around for over a decade: it was an AI-powered productivity tool that finally made the project feasible. The potential of AI goes beyond reducing the burden of our human labors—it extends into how these tools can enable us to work together in new ways to solve old problems.
At NICC, our faculty and staff have engaged with AI tools, training and research for over two years. Since early 2024, our AI Alliance has been offering guidance on how individual programs and departments can responsibly integrate generative AI tools into their work. We prioritize data security and continue to deepen our own institutional capacity to understand and respond to new and emerging technologies. These efforts, combined with ongoing investments in learninganalytics and institutional research, will enable us to measure and support student success in smarter and more effective ways in the years ahead. President Dave Dahms, his cabinet and our College Board of Trustees have positioned NICC as a community college leader in AI readiness.
Jordan O’Connell serves as an instructional designer and instructor at Northeast Iowa Community College, where he supports faculty in course building, assessment design and instructional technologies. He recently co-authored a chapter for Teachers' Roles and Perspectives on AI Integration in Schools (IGI Global, 2025), which explores the opportunities and ethical considerations of AI use amongst educators. He is currently pursuing an education doctoral degree through Winona State University and can be reached at oconnellj@nicc.edu

Soft Skills in the Workplace
Technical skills and subject-specific knowledge are required for many jobs but can only take a person so far. Soft skills are essential for all members of the workforce, in all types of organizations, across all levels of employment. While important in all areas of life, these vital attributes can still be hard to define.
Jennie Brown, HR, Medical Associates, shares her definition, stating: "Soft skills, such as communication, empathy and adaptability, are critical in fostering effective collaboration, building trust and creating a strong teamwork environment. The ability to listen actively, manage conflict constructively and adjust your communication style is essential for fostering teamwork, offering great customer service and achieving organizational goals."
Liz Kass, HR, ProPulse, explains, "Soft skills are your personal attributes that are a must for people to work well with others and be successful in their careers at ProPulse! Soft skills have become a necessity again in the workplace!”
Although soft skills can be considered personality traits, they cannot be assumed; and proper training can enhance these abilities. Kendall Hunt is one of multiple companies that regularly utilize training opportunities at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) to grow their talent pipeline.
“The monthly leadership training developed by NICC has transformed how our management team approaches their roles. This comprehensive program doesn't just teach theory; it provides practical, actionable strategies that our leaders can implement immediately. From mastering crucial HR practices to building stronger connections through regular one-on-one meetings, the training has equipped our team with the tools they need to lead effectively and create an environment where employees want to stay and grow,” expressed Stacie Halverson, HR, Kendall Hunt Publishing.
NICC offers in-depth, customized training tailored to the needs of individual employers. The College recently held free monthly webinars showcasing instructors and highlighting soft skills topics. These webinar recordings are available to view anytime at youtube.com/neiowacc.
Let NICC help you build your team, support your employees and serve your customers today! Explore inperson and virtual classes at nicc.edu/solutions or contact us to learn about how training can be customized for your business.
“I have gained more confidence in my abilities as a leader because of the topics and tools covered in Leadership Academy.”

Leo Avila NICC CERTIFICATE AND AAS GRADUATE OUTSTANDING ALUMNI AWARD RECIPIENT, COMMUNITY COLLEGES FOR IOWA
Creating a Pathway to Careers
Four Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) graduates from the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machinist Technician diploma program work at Morrison Bros. Co. in Dubuque. All four students connected with Morrison Bros. Co. through internships as part of the program and were employed full-time with the company upon graduation.
Morrison Bros. Co. designs, engineers and manufactures integrated fuel storage components for the energy industry. From design to finished product, the company handles all aspects of the process, complete with in-house CNC machining and finishing capabilities. Graduates Abbie Hefel and Mason Henning work in machine setup while
Matt Meyer and Zach Laird are employed as tool makers. In these positions, they set up and operate CNC machines and equipment and produce quality parts utilizing skills they learned in the NICC program and handson at the company.
Morrison Bros. Co. offers internships to the College’s CNC students during the program's last semester to gain hands-on workplace experience. The company gets to know the students and their capabilities, with the intent to hire them full-time once they finish their education.
In addition to the diploma option, NICC offers short-term Career Pathway Certificate (CPC) programs, including the CNC Operator certificate, to address acute shortages of
middle-skilled employees. The certificate program can lead directly to employment or can be a first step for students to continue their education in the diploma program. Morrison Bros. Co. recently signed an agreement as an official NICC partner to support students in both the diploma and CPC programs.
Rick Zillig, Morrison Bros. Co. Director of Manufacturing, stated, “Morrison Bros. Co. elected to partner with NICC because it gives us visibility to the students. It allows them to see what types of careers are available at Morrison Bros. Co., and it also allows us to get in front of the students and be active in the education programs that are offered.”

Meet the Graduates …
Abbie Hefel is one of seven females among 29 employees working on the shop floor at Morrison Bros. Co. Like many students, she had no idea what she wanted to do after high school. She was drawn to both the CNC program and Morrison Bros. Co. through Mason Henning, another NICC graduate working at the company.
Abbie advises other females to enroll in the CNC program, stating “Don’t be intimidated to try something new. Although trades careers, like CNC, are male-dominated, there is no reason for that—it doesn’t have to be that way anymore!”
Abbie likes how the diploma program can be done in a year or less.

However, she noted, “I don’t think people know it's an option to do it without the gen eds and just get a certificate. I didn’t even know it was a thing until I was in the program and there were CPC students who came in at night.”
Matt Meyer previously spent 14 years working as a carpenter, building houses, until he was laid off for over a year. At the time, he felt he had few prospects and didn’t want to continue on his current path, so he took a friend’s advice and enrolled in the CNC Machinist program at NICC.
When asked about his goals in taking the CNC program, Matt replied, "Finding employment was my goal. A college credit degree or diploma was a nice bonus – but having all the credentials necessary to say that yes, I know how to do something, was the most important part."
The Career Pathway Certificate program can help students gain skills and find employment in even less time. CPC programs can be completed in just a few weeks or months and are designed to provide critical job and technical skills through hands-on training.
A CPC can be earned at little to no cost to the student and provides a direct path to fast-growing entry-level jobs and increased wages.
NICC tailors its training to the needs of the businesses through input from the companies. Through this partnership, businesses can collaborate with NICC, offering industry-specific insights and feedback to ensure programs are aligned with current workforce needs and expectations.

Mason Henning and Zach Laird were both drawn to the CNC program after finding interest and enjoyment in hands-on activities and high school shop classes. Zach chose NICC because it was close to home and he had heard good things about the College. Mason selected CNC machining because his uncle was employed in the field and encouraged him to pursue it. Additionally, his aunt, who is employed at Morrison Bros. Co., informed him about an internship opportunity and helped him make essential connections. He later connected Abbie Hefel to the program and Morrison Bros. Co. as well.
Businesses that partner with NICC and provide input into programs and curriculum are marketed on the College’s
website so that students can visually connect to an employer of their choice prior to starting the program.
“Going forward, students will be able to identify us as a local manufacturer. If they want to stay in and around the area, I think it gives them more potential for a career here in Dubuque,” explained Sam Glab, Learning and Development Manager at Morrison Bros. Co.
According to Iowa Workforce Development (IWD) labor market statistics, manufacturing was ranked second among Iowa’s top five largest industry sectors in 2024. IWD occupational employment and wage statistics show that the mean annual wage for machinists and tool and die makers was $54,325 as of May 2023. Job openings continue to result from the need to replace
workers who transfer to other occupations and those who retire or otherwise exit the labor force.
Rick Zillig explained, “In the last few years, it has been a challenge for everyone to find employees in general but especially in manufacturing. It has gotten a little better recently, but it is still challenging to find people coming into the workforce with skills and experience, particularly in the CNC field.”
By partnering with NICC, Morrison Bros. Co. hopes to overcome these challenges by connecting with students who come out of the program with exposure and interest in the field and the skills needed for the job.
Through these partnerships, the College and supporting businesses work together to build a skilled workforce that benefits both the students and the employers.
Currently, eight businesses, including Morrison Bros. Co., have agreed to partner with NICC to support the CNC diploma and CPC programs. NICC is also establishing similar agreements with companies in other program areas.
Let NICC help you choose your path and connect you to your future.

Sparking Career Interests at Summer Camps
In the 1990s, Tara Kramer was a curious kid attending summer camp at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), where a dramatic helicopter landing on campus left her in awe. This unforgettable moment during a farm safety camp ignited her passion for emergency services, ultimately leading her to pursue EMT courses at NICC and become a certified flight paramedic.
“The NICC programs ignited a spark in me; they helped me find a successful career that I love,” she recalls. Tara's journey exemplifies how the College's diverse summer camps inspire career interests in young people, providing hands-on experiences that pave the way for future success.
From June through early August, NICC campuses and centers offer creative, hands-on learning opportunities for youth. Experienced instructors and mentors guide campers in discovering hidden talents and interests while fostering early career exploration. “These youth camps are a vital introduction to potential career pathways for students,” stated youth welding instructor, Seth Harms.
“They have the chance to experiment with skills and hopefully gain an excitement for learning. If this excitement can carry to the high school and beyond, we can help our workforce with better candidates.”
The Be Your Own Boss camps in Cresco and Waukon encourage creativity, problem-solving and leadership skills. Campers learn basic business concepts, develop business plans, create marketing materials and pitch their ideas to local business professionals.
The College also offers camps dedicated to exploring in-demand skills such as coding, welding and more. Sessions focused on the arts promote self-expression and critical thinking, while science-based programs dive deeper into experimentation and collaborative problemsolving—soft skills that are valuable in any career field. Connor Meyer, a recent camper, stated they enjoyed “learning to weld, so I will know how to weld in the future.”
NICC summer camps provide valuable opportunities for youth to explore potential careers. Learn more about camp options in Calmar, Cresco, Manchester, Oelwein, Peosta and Waukon.
Promoting Farm Safety in Local Communities
Farms are a great place to grow up, but they also come with risks. That’s why the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS) is dedicated to teaching local communities how to stay safe. One way is through interactive farm safety camps each summer.
At these camps, local youth learn how to recognize and avoid dangers like:
• Tractor and Machinery Safety
• Grain Safety
• Electrical Hazards
• ATV/UTV
For more than 25 years, NECAS has been the nation’s leader in hands-on farm safety training, saving lives and preventing injuries in agricultural communities.
Real-Life Impact: A Life Saved in Frankville, Iowa
In 2020, local farmer Frank Livingood became trapped chest-high in grain—a life-threatening situation. Thanks to NECAS-trained first responders and a grain bin rescue tube, Frank was safely rescued. He is one of 43 people saved nationally and internationally through NECAS grain bin rescue training since 2012.
More than Farm Safety
NECAS doesn’t stop at agriculture—it also provides safety training in:
• Transportation Safety
• Hazardous Materials Management
• OSHA Best Practices
By promoting farm safety awareness, NECAS is committed to reducing farm-related accidents and ensuring rural families stay safe for generations to come.
NECAS also offers Farm First Aid Kits for purchase. The kits are designed with farm injuries in mind but contain first aid supplies useful in any emergency response and for everyday use. If you would like to purchase a kit, contact Dan Neenan at neenand@nicc.edu or Jayne Curtis at curtisja@nicc.edu.
