’ Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is with humble admiration that I count it all joy to be your servant pastor during the centennial celebration of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in the great city of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. For 100 years, Bethel has stood as a beacon of hope in this community, leading people to Christ. Over the past 100 years, Bethel has shaped the lives of community leaders. As a proven training institution of ministers, deacons, trustees, deaconess, Sunday school teachers, vocalists, and worship leaders, you have remained faithful and loyal to God. Without a doubt, you have proven by your faithfulness:

“Psalm 127:1 Except the LORD build the house, they labor in vain that build it.” From your loins praise dancers have been birthed, children and youth choirs have emerged, the Male Chorus, and the Echoes of Praise have flourished under the musical direction of a strong legacy of dedicated brothers and sisters in Christ who have worked over the century, under the anointing of God, to strengthen our music ministry. Down through the years, many have come and gone. Some have moved on to flourish in other ministries, and others have transitioned to glory. Amidst good times and bad, your doors have been open to all, “to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and its life changing power through acts of service and love.” Without a doubt Bethel Missionary Baptist Church is “the friendly church where everybody is somebody and Jesus is Lord of all.” Yours in Christ, Reverend Alec K. Piper, Pastor

’ Greetings in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, It has been 100 years since God planted the original seed to establish a strong, vibrant, and transformative place of worship in the great city of Aliquippa Pennsylvania called Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. We, as a church family walking together in Christian love, are celebrating a tremendous milestone, rich history, and the promise of a bright future. We remember and are thankful for how God has showered us with immense favor and has kept a hedge of protection around us down through the years. We are excited and honored to chair such an important occasion in the history of our beloved church. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve God and our church family in this capacity, and it is with this sense of gratitude that we thank you all for your confidence in our ability to lead and, more importantly, your unyielding support during our Centennial Jubilee Celebration. We are exceedingly grateful for the Centennial Jubilee committee members who worked tirelessly to bring forth this year of worship and celebration. Through your work and dedication, you have truly exemplified our anniversary theme, “Abiding in Faith, Hope, and Love,” helping us see this undertaking through to the very end. We believe that we have worked to demonstrate the spirit of Paul when he said, “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” To Rev. Dr. Byron Thomas and all our guests who share this day with us, we thank God for your presence. May God continue to bless and keep you all in His care. To God be the glory for the things He has done! Your humble servants,

Sister Jovita D. Smith and Sister Anita B. Walker Centennial Jubilee Committee Chairpersons

During the reign of Rev. Bullock the church moved to Griffith Street. Under Rev. Taylor’s leadership there were many great accomplishments such as: the formation of an Education Committee, a Youth Choir, Junior Male Chorus, Dorcas Missionary Circle, a Training Department with Rev. Taylor as the teacher, two winning basketball teams, a Building Fund Committee, the Deaconesses were reorganized, the Sanctuary of the church on Griffith St. was renovated, property was purchased on Wykes and Griffith Streets for a new church. Rev. Taylor resigned in 1971. In 1972, the Rev. Jessie L. McFarland became the pastor. During his leadership at Bethel we saw the fulfillment of a dream, a new church edifice, a new parsonage, a new organ, a new piano, and several new vans were purchased. Rev. McFarland served Bethel faithfully until his passing in 2003. As of June 2006 we have been led by Rev. Alec K. Piper. Under his leadership a state of the art PA-system was purchased and paid for; a new 12-passenger van was purchased and paid for; New dining room chairs and tables were purchased and paid for; The Light of Judah was resurrected; The Children of the Most High Choir was organized; Rev. Henry Murphy was appointed Relationship Pastor and the Sunday School was restructured under Sis. Carroll Murphy.

Reverend Dr. Byron E. Thomas is a native of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. A veteran of the United States Air Force, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion and Philosophy from Virginia Union University, Richmond, Virginia and a Master of Divinity degree from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. Dr. Thomas graduated in May 2016 from the McCormick Theological Seminary, Association of Chicago Theological Schools (ACTS), with a Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) in Preaching. Dr. Thomas has served as the Senior Pastor of Ben Hill United Methodist Church (BHUMC) since June 2013. Placing a premium on discipleship as opposed to membership, Dr. Thomas has emphasized the importance of spiritual formation as foundational for faithfully executing the ministry God has entrusted to the Church. Dr. Thomas has served as the pastor at Central United Methodist Church in Atlanta; Associate Director in the Office of Connectional Ministries for the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church where his primary area of concentration was Advocacy; and as pastor at the Fort Street United Methodist Church in Atlanta. He has served the Atlanta-College Park District as a member of the District Board of Ordained Ministry and as the Chair of the District Committee on Superintendency. He has twice-served as Chaplain and Educational Liaison at the United Methodist Children’s Home, and has chaired the Board of the Interfaith Children’s Movement (ICM). In May 2015 Dr. Thomas was elected as the President of the North Georgia Black Methodist for Church Renewal (NGBMCR). In October 2015 he was elected as the Coordinator for the Southeastern Jurisdiction Black Methodist for Church Renewal (SEJBMCR). At the 2015 North Georgia Annual Conference in Athens, Georgia, Dr. Thomas was elected as a Clergy Delegate to the 2016 General and Jurisdictional Conferences.

He is married to DuWanna and they are the proud parents of two wonderful sons, Ntchwaidumela and Mustafa.

This page is dedicated in memory of our loving parents. They made it possible for all of us to make our way into the kingdom of heaven; throughout the darkest moments, the hardest struggles and the sands of time. Roosevelt and Dora Mae Barden relied upon only one guide, one map and one solid foundation, The Holy Bible, God’s compass for our lives as it was for theirs. “According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise builder, I have laid the foundation and another buildeth there one. But let every man take heed how he buildeth there upon.” I Corinthians 3:10

Who can find a virtuous woman?

“...for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates. Proverbs 31:10-31
