John F.T. Scott
Retired Chief Executive
John Scott was the CEO of Canada’s largest grocery association, the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers, for 22 years before he retired in 2013. John was on the Niagara College’s Board of Director as Chair from 2017-2020.
Through his expertise and extraordinary dedication to NC’s Board of Governors, Scott left a legacy at the College. During his tenure, NC completed several campus redevelopment projects – including the opening of Canada’s first Teaching Distillery at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-theLake – launched its trailblazing Artisan Distilling and Commercial Cannabis Production programs, which were the first of their kind in the country, and recruited the College’s first new president in almost 25 years.
Scott currently analyzes retail food sector strategies; advises firms in the supply chain; and is a frequent speaker to public entities, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), processing groups and private companies. He is a trusted advisor to several Canadian grocery companies.
He is also Past Chair of the acclaimed Vineland Research and Innovation Centre; the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute; and Markham Stouffville Hospital. Among others, he has served on the Board of Directors of the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (ALMA), the North American Advisory Board of Monaghan Mushrooms, and Stong’s Markets LLP.
Scott has a degree in Economics from Queen’s University, where he has also undertaken postgraduate training, and he has completed the Director’s Education Program at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.
He also holds the designation ICD.D from the Institute of Corporate Directors, which represents a lifelong commitment to excellence in the boardroom and ongoing governance education.
Scott has been honoured with the two highest awards in the retail food industry: the Golden Pencil (Hall of Fame) and the Spirit of the Independent Award. He is a Life Member of the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute (CAPI) and been inducted into Grocery Business Magazine’s Grocery Hall of Fame.
He lives with his wife Michelle in Niagara-on-the-Lake where they are often pleased to host the families of their three children who collectively boast an active cadre of six grandchildren.
