Welcome back to another semester of lifelong learning! The Lifelong Learning Institute offers us a unique opportunity to explore education through a different lens—one free from the external pressures of grades and expectations. Throughout my life, I’ve always maintained a positive outlook. However, looking back, I realize that while growing up, many anxieties disrupted my joy of learning. Despite being a good student, I often found my focus shifting due to pressures and insecurities. Now, how refreshing it is to be part of the Lifelong Learning Institute! Here, we can view learning through a clear lens, filtering out imperfections that blur our abilities to learn. We can simply expand our minds, enjoy learning in the moment, and have fun doing it.

THE ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH CENTURY
Instructor: John Henry Day: Thursday
Date: September, 26, 2024
Time: 2:00 - 4:00 PM
Location: Beem Center BC200 Course #: 17694
The Arts and Crafts Movement in America followed a few years behind the same efforts in England, spearheaded by William Morris and others. Its emphasis was on the design as a craftsman and the use of simplicity in the design of the objects we use. You could view it as a knee-jerk reaction to the excessive ornamentation of the Victorian period. We will discuss some of the main actors in this effort in America, including Gustav Stickley, Elbert Hubbard, William Grueby, and Dirk Van Erp. This class will concentrate on the decorative arts and furnishings, although the influence of this movement continued into the early-to-mid-century architectural designs.
John Henry first developed an interest in Arts and Crafts book design while still a high school student, and has continued that interest throughout his career. His career included time as a college professor at Oklahoma State University and Northern Illinois University and close to thirty years as a business manager here in Mason City. Now retired, he enjoys playing music and creative activities in his home printing shop; Cedar Creek Press.

A passionate invitation written by one Iowa farmer caught the attention of the Holy Father, setting in motion a breathtaking and unprecedented event for the state. The Des Moines Roman Catholic Diocese hired a filmmaker to document the event and all the planning and preparations leading up to the first visit by a Pope to the state of Iowa. This year that film has been made available to Iowa PBS. To commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Pope’s visit, we interviewed several people featured in the film who
were part of the event for a unique look at the history behind the logistical and spiritual planning it took for such a momentous event.
We invite you to be part of the premiere screening of this special documentary, “The Pope’s Visit to Iowa”. After the screening, there will be time for a Q&A with one of the Iowa PBS producers and the Iowa PBS General Manager

Time: 1:00 - 2:30 PM

Course #: 17704
With the 2024 election fast approaching, Provocative Lit will be discussing how regionalism shapes the way we think and vote – make no mistake, Presidential candidates exploit this regionalism, and state politicians draw up gerrymandered voting maps on the basis of who votes how.
“Why do Americans have such a difficult time agreeing on basic issues like the meaning of freedom, the role of religion in public life, or what it means to be an American?”
Historian and award-winning journalist Colin Woodard argues that there are actually eleven distinct “nations” in North America, “each with its own unique historical roots dating back centuries” to the political and religious reasons the original immigrants came to the New World. America has never been a unified country. Join us for a fascinating rethinking of American history and how “American’s myriad identities and...the conflicts [among] them have shaped our
past and are molding our future.” (from book jacket)
George Riesen is a former English teacher, passionate discusser of literature, and graduate of Yale University. She loves to read, research, and argue about books. She researches and writes the program notes for the Una Vocis Choral Ensemble.

Time: 2:30 - 4:30 PM
Location: Beem Center BC200
Course #: 17771
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
The Battle of Midway was a pivotal battle in the Pacific during World War II in which Imperial Japan had hoped to establish a defensive perimeter in the Pacific to prevent American power from impeding its expansion in Asia and other Pacific Islands. The attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941, did significant damage to the American Navy but American aircraft carriers were not present at Pearl that day, and Japanese strategy had hoped to attack them from the strategic location at Midway Atoll. Unbeknownst to the Japanese Navy they would have the opportunity to meet them sooner than they thought and the famous battle of Midway would occur on June 4th-7th, 1942, with tremendous consequences for the rest of the war in the Pacific.
The objective of this presentation is to provide an overview of the Battle of Midway for the general public and to
acknowledge the service and sacrifice of all of our veterans. A recommended reading list and handout will be provided, and there will be a question and answer session after the lecture
