President’s Message Dear NIACC Alumni and Friends, s I reflect on my first full year as president of North Iowa Area Community College, I am filled with gratitude and excitement. It has been an incredible experience getting to know this vibrant campus and the greater North Iowa community. From day one, I have been welcomed with open arms, and it is clear that NIACC holds a special place in the hearts of so many.

There’s a lot to be proud of here at NIACC. This year, we were thrilled to be ranked #1 in Graduation Rate and #1 in Student Success among all Iowa community colleges—a testament to the dedication of our faculty, staff, and students, and to the strong partnerships we share with our communities.

We’re also looking ahead with excitement! Construction of the Franklin County Career Center is underway, a project that will create even more opportunities for students and strengthen workforce development in our region. It’s just one of many ways NIACC is living out its mission and preparing students for bright futures.

In this issue, you’ll read inspiring stories about NIACC alumni who are making an impact both here at home and across the country. Their success is a powerful reminder of the ripple effect of education and the strength of our NIACC community.

ALWAYS ON THE GO: Ben McCollum’s Journey from NIACC to the Big Ten

You can’t just be tough—it’s like a muscle. You have to work on it every day.

Ben McCollum ‘2001 has always been in motion.

As a student-athlete at NIACC from 1999 - 2001, Coach Steve Krafcisin remembers him constantly attacking the basket.

Years later, while McCollum was coaching at Drake, Krafcisin spotted him jogging outside before a game.

“All coaches are a little quirky,” Krafcisin laughed. “Ben’s way was running.”

That energy defines him still. Even now, as the new head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes, McCollum prefers to talk while running through Iowa City.

“I think best on runs.”

From NIACC to the National Stage

In 2024, he took over at Drake. His Bulldogs went 31-4, swept the MVC titles, and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He was named Missouri Valley Coach of the Year.

Then Iowa called.

Lessons from NIACC At NIACC, McCollum scored 692 career points, hit 115 three-pointers, and earned two all-region honors. But he says the experience went far beyond basketball.

“At a community college, you learn how to interact with everyone. I learned a lot from that experience.”

It’s also where he began forming his coaching philosophy:

After NIACC, McCollum transferred to Northwest Missouri State, where he helped the Bearcats reach the Division II Elite Eight. He returned years later as head coach and built a dynasty:

“Just try to be great each day. Get a little better today, tomorrow, and the next day.

The results will take care of themselves.”

Coming Full Circle From Storm Lake to NIACC to CarverHawkeye Arena, McCollum’s journey has been improbable and inspiring.

“When you say it out loud, it’s a pretty wild progression. But my family always believed in me. That belief carried me through.”

Coach Krafcisin couldn’t be prouder.

“To be at Iowa - it’s hard to believe. I tell people all the time, ‘That Ben McCollum played for me at NIACC.’ It’s pretty neat.”

Advice for Today’s Trojans As NIACC student-athletes start another season, McCollum’s advice is simple: “Find opportunities to give to the place you’re at. My intent was always to make a place better. If you keep that first, you’ll find joy.”

And yes - the tie tradition remains. At Drake, it was blue. At Iowa, it will be gold.

“You can’t just be tough - it’s like a muscle.

You have to work on it every day.”

His goals aren’t built on win totals, but on daily improvement. The results, he insists, will follow.

NIACC Alumni Building Stronger Communities Through Service At North Iowa Area Community College, student success isn’t only about the individual student—it’s about the ripple effect that spreads throughout the region. It’s about neighbors helping neighbors, students who grow into leaders and graduates who bring their skills back home. NIACC’s mission is clear: prepare individuals for success while strengthening the entire region.

That impact can be felt in hospitals, fire stations, police departments, and classrooms in communities across North Iowa and beyond.

NURSING:

Compassion at the Core When someone in North Iowa needs medical care, there’s a good chance a NIACC nursing graduate is there. The college’s Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program is one of its most indemand pathways, and for good reason: it blends rigorous clinical experience with personal support that sets graduates up for success.

From local hospitals to rural clinics, NIACC-trained nurses are serving patients with both skill and compassion. They are the calm presence in an emergency room, the steady hand during a procedure and the reassuring voice for families in difficult moments. Their training doesn’t just prepare them to pass the NCLEX exam—it prepares them to care for their communities.

EMERGENCY SERVICES: Answering the Call

Every time a fire truck races down the street or an ambulance responds to a 911 call, the community places its trust in first responders. NIACC’s Emergency Services programs—covering Fire Science, EMT, and Paramedic training—ensure that trust is well-placed.

Students train on real equipment, learn from seasoned professionals, and practice scenarios that mirror the splitsecond decisions required in the field.

Many go on to serve in North Iowa fire

departments, EMS teams, and rescue squads. The program’s influence stretches across the region, filling critical roles in both urban and rural communities where resources are limited but the need is great.

Inspiring the Next Generation Strong communities start with great teachers. Every lesson taught, every student encouraged, and every classroom led with care helps shape the future of our towns, cities, and country.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE: Serving with Integrity

Safety is the backbone of any thriving community. NIACC’s Criminal Justice program equips students with the knowledge, skills, and ethics to ensure both justice and protection. Coursework blends legal principles, investigative techniques, and a focus on community trust—critical for today’s complex world of policing and corrections.

Graduates step into roles as law enforcement officers, correctional officers, and legal professionals who

understand that protecting a community requires not only enforcing laws but also respecting the people those laws are designed to serve.

A Community Investment These programs represent only a portion of NIACC’s offerings, but they embody the heart of the college’s mission. By focusing on pathways that meet real regional needs, NIACC ensures that students don’t just earn degrees—they find meaningful careers that directly improve the quality of life all over our country.

From Football Field to K9 Unit Leadership

Guttenberg native finds his future at NIACC Matt Moser always knew he wanted to find the right fit after high school.

He looked for a place where he could grow both academically and personally.

That search led him to North Iowa Area Community College, where he enrolled in the fall of 2002.

“NIACC was great because I was able to get all my general education courses done, before going towards a law enforcement degree, because of this I did not need to start over or take a bunch of different classes,” Moser said.

Moser graduated from NIACC in 2005 before continuing his education at Buena Vista University on the NIACC campus, earning his bachelor’s degree in 2007.

A Life-Changing NIACC Experience Looking back, Moser credits NIACC with giving him both the support and opportunities that shaped his future career.

“I loved my experience at NIACC,” he shared. “Instructors that left a lasting impression on me were Craig Zoellner and Kathy Rogotzke.

They cared about us as individuals and wanted us to succeed.”

One of the most defining experiences during his time at NIACC was becoming involved in the football program. In 2004, he was hired as an assistant coach—a role that required him to be a role model both on and off the field.

“I had to make sure I was a good student as I expected our players to be good students,” Moser explained. “That motivation helped push me to get my degree and later my bachelor’s.”

A Career in Law Enforcement Although education was his initial path, Moser discovered a new direction after completing an internship with the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office. Observing deputies in action showed him the variety of opportunities available in law enforcement.

He began his career in January 2008 at the Strawberry Point Police Department.

Just a year later, he joined the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, where he was soon promoted to K9 Handler. Over the years, he has worked with three different K9 partners, including his current dog, Rexo. In 2020, he earned the rank of Sergeant.

“I love working with my dogs—that is the most rewarding part, especially when you have a successful outcome,” he said. “I also really like teaching and presenting to our communities about prevention and our K9 program.”

Giving Back to the Community In addition to his law enforcement career, Moser has returned to his high school roots as the head football coach at Clayton Ridge High School, where he works as a substitute teacher.

His connection to NIACC remains strong.

He notes with pride that three of the 13 deputies currently serving at the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office are NIACC alumni, all from different graduating classes.

Advice for Future NIACC Students When asked what advice he would give to someone considering NIACC, Moser didn’t hesitate.

“

Moser also pointed out “NIACC is always upgrading facilities and making it the best possible experience academically with an outstanding atmosphere.”

Family Life Outside of his career and coaching, Moser is a dedicated family man. He and his wife, Sarah Moser, are raising 10-yearold twins, Gabriella and Greyson. Their family also includes three dogs: Hawkeye, their pet; Raven, his retired police K9; and Rexo, his current K9 partner.

From his time as a student-athlete and coach at NIACC to his leadership role in law enforcement, Matt Moser continues to embody NIACC’s spirit of perseverance, community, and opportunity—proving once again that for many students, NIACC truly is where they find their future.

NIACC Nursing Alum Finds Her Calling in Rural Healthcare

NIACC grad thrives as a dedicated nurse in her North Iowa community When Bailey Martin graduated from North Iowa Area Community College with her Associate’s Degree in Nursing in 2024, she knew she was stepping into a career defined by compassion, resilience, and continuous learning. Today, as a Registered Nurse at Floyd County Medical Center (FCMC) in Charles City, Iowa, Martin is living that reality—making a difference every day on both the MedicalSurgical Unit and in the Emergency Department.

A Career Built on Choice and Community Martin’s path to nursing began long before graduation day. A Mason City native, she started taking NIACC classes in high school—both in-person and online—drawn by the college’s flexibility, welcoming environment, and generous scholarship opportunities, including the Last Dollar Scholarship.

“The nursing program at any college can be intimidating and overwhelming,” Martin said.

One lesson that stuck with her came during the notoriously difficult third semester of nursing school, when coursework focuses on cardiac and psychiatric care. “Mrs. Seibert reminded us often that we had choices, we could

either choose to utilize the materials provided and utilize our time to study hard for success on the exams and in the clinical setting, or we could choose to do other things that may result in a poor grade or poor performance.”

From Behavioral Health to Emergency Medicine After earning her degree, Martin accepted her first nursing position at Avera Behavioral Health Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. There, she worked with patients facing a range of psychiatric diagnoses—a challenging and rewarding start to her career.

Eventually, the pull of home brought her back to North Iowa, where she accepted a position at FCMC. The hospital has supported her professional growth by sponsoring her Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Trauma Nursing Core Course certifications—crucial qualifications for emergency nursing.

“FCMC has so many opportunities for career growth,” Martin said. “Many of our staff are cross-trained to work in multiple departments, including the MedicalSurgical Unit, Emergency Department, and Birthing Center.”

Finding Purpose in Rural Care Working in a critical access hospital has given Martin the chance to serve patients across the lifespan and for a variety of reasons—from emergencies to routine care.

That sense of community extends to her colleagues as well. “We work very well together and are always willing to help each other,” Martin added. “I’m never afraid to ask a question or seek support.”

Her advice to current and future nursing students is simple: “Never stop asking questions and never stop learning.

We can always learn something from someone.”

Looking Ahead Balancing a demanding weekend night shift schedule with time for family and ongoing education, Bailey Martin exemplifies what it means to be a lifelong learner and dedicated caregiver.

Her journey from NIACC classroom to emergency care nurse shows just how far a solid foundation— and a few good choices—can take you.

Building Bright Beginnings: Teacher’s Journey Starts at NIACC

A NIACC Alum’s Path to Purpose in the Classroom When Emily Mujica walked across the stage at Mason City High School in 2007, she wasn’t entirely sure where her path would lead. Like many graduates, she decided to start her college journey close to home — and that decision set the stage for a career built on passion, purpose and the power of education.

Finding Her Path at NIACC Emily chose to attend North Iowa Area Community College to complete her general education requirements while exploring her interests. “When I first graduated high school, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to major in,” she recalls. “NIACC turned out to be the perfect choice.”

Beyond the classroom, NIACC gave Emily the opportunity to continue her love for running by joining the cross country and track teams. The supportive campus community also felt like home — her family had positive experiences there, and she quickly found herself thriving in the close-knit environment.

“What I really loved about NIACC was the intimate learning environment,” Emily says.

“

Lessons That Last a Lifetime During her time at NIACC (2007–2009), several instructors left a lasting impression. Keith Jaben, a familiar face from high school, helped ease her transition to college. Paul Peterson sparked a passion for writing, leading Emily to join the LOGOS team. And math instructor Chris Brandt — who had also taught her in high school — demonstrated patience and encouragement that helped Emily overcome academic challenges.

NIACC LEGACY the Boy Scouts of daughter of Andrea (Helm) Mujica ‘83 America but soon sister of Natalie (Mujica) Martin ’16 discovered that her cousin of Amanda (Mujica) Rupe ’05 true calling was in niece of Dawn (Perau) Best ’68 education. She went niece of Monte Perau ‘70 on to earn a B.A. in Elementary Education niece of Magdalena Mujica Voy ‘76 from the University of Northern Iowa and later a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Trauma and Resilience from Concordia University.

Since 2018, Emily has been teaching kindergarten for Lincoln, Nebraska Public Schools — a role she describes as deeply fulfilling.

“Teaching wasn’t my original career path, but I came to realize it was my calling,” she explains. “As someone who struggled with school due to a learning disability, I know how important it is for a child to feel confident in their learning. That’s why I became a teacher — to help students succeed and ensure they feel empowered in the classroom.”

Building Strong Foundations For Emily, one of the greatest joys of her job is being a child’s first teacher. “It’s such a special role to welcome kids into the world of education,” she says. “I work alongside families to make sure our classroom is a safe, caring, and joyful place to be.”

Her dedication has not gone unnoticed. Emily was nominated by her administrators for the 2023 Inspire Award and named the 2024 Thank You Teacher of the Year — an honor that holds special meaning because it came from a family.

“To me, the profound connection with students and families is the highest form of recognition, and it was an honor to receive the award from the Governor of Nebraska.”

From Student to Teacher After graduating from NIACC in 2010, Emily transferred to Iowa State University, where she earned a B.S. in Child, Adult and Family Services. She began her career as a District Executive with

Answering the Call: NIACC Alum Helps Lead Mason City Fire Department

How learning paved the path to leadership The sound of sirens, the flash of red lights and the pressure of split-second decisions — for Aaron Beemer, it’s all part of a day’s work. As Deputy Chief of Operations for the Mason City Fire Department, Beemer leads with calm confidence, guiding crews through emergencies, and ensuring the safety of the community he’s proud to serve. After joining the MCFD, Beemer came to NIACC looking to broaden his knowledge in firefighting and incident command.

Finding His Future at NIACC Beemer’s path to public service began in the early 2000s, when he first enrolled in NIACC in 2001 after his service in the Army. Drawn to a career where he could serve others and work as part of a closeknit team, he immersed himself in his coursework and hands-on training.

“NIACC helped me hone my writing and speaking skills and helped teach me the value of diligent study.”

Climbing the Ranks Through Dedication Beemer joined the Mason City Fire Department in 2000, quickly distinguishing himself as a hardworking and dependable firefighter. Over the next two decades, he steadily rose through the ranks, serving as a firefighter/EMT, then as lieutenant, and later captain while earning the respect of his peers and community along the way.

In 2018, Beemer reached a major career milestone when he was promoted to Deputy Chief of Operations. In this leadership role, he oversees day-to-day emergency response, coordinates training and preparedness, and ensures the

department’s operations run efficiently and effectively. It’s a position that demands strategic thinking, calm under pressure, and a deep understanding of both people and process — qualities Beemer has cultivated throughout his career.

A Commitment to Community While his responsibilities have grown, Beemer’s focus has never wavered: protecting the people of Mason City. He takes pride in leading a team dedicated to saving lives, educating the public, and improving safety for all residents. “ It is a very difficult, stressful, allconsuming career that relatively few are capable of handling. It will contain some of your lowest days, and some of the best days of your life.”

Morocco to the Midwest: How NIACC Shaped Energy Leader Zak Joundi 2025 Outstanding Alumnus hen Zakaria “Zak” Joundi ’03 left Morocco for Mason City,

he was just 17 years old, speaking four languages W Iowa, but still learning English. What he found at NIACC was

more than an education - it was a foundation that propelled him to the top of the energy industry.

A New Beginning in Iowa Zak arrived at NIACC in August 2001, only weeks before the events of 9/11. As a Muslim teenager far from home, he might have expected uncertainty. Instead, he found compassion.

“Churches and synagogues reached out to the small Muslim community. The support was incredible. The people are my favorite part of NIACC.” That spirit of care extended to campus. His first work-study job, under the guidance of Sally Becker, taught him not just responsibility but empathy.

“Sally was, and still is, like family. That first job meant everything.”

The Road to Leadership Zak earned his Associate Degree in Pre-Engineering at NIACC, then transferred to Iowa State, graduating in 2005 with a degree in electrical engineering. He later completed an MBA in Finance at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.

That academic foundation fueled his rise in the energy industry.

Zak built his career at MISO (Midcontinent Independent System Operator), the nonprofit that manages the electric grid and market operations for 45 million people across 15 states and parts of Canada.

Jan Nierling: 2025 Distinguished Alumna Janice (Jan) Nierling ‘17 embodies the spirit of lifelong learning and community service. After earning her bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from Iowa State University, Jan built a 22-year career as a newspaper and magazine writer and editor across Iowa, Oklahoma, and Texas. She later followed a new passion - returning to NIACC to earn her Associate’s Degree in Physical Therapist Assistant in 2017.

Beyond her professional achievements, Jan has made service a cornerstone of her life. She’s volunteered extensively with the NIACC Food Pantry, reviewed NIACC Foundation scholarship applications, and served as an ambassador and board chair at Mercy Medical Center–North Iowa. Jan lives in Mason City with her spouse and continues to inspire others through her commitment to learning, helping, and giving back.

A Lasting Gift of Beauty For Delbert and Mary Laudner, generosity was never about recognition—it was about making a difference. Through their careful estate planning, the Laudners were able to ensure their values would live on in meaningful ways.

At NIACC, that legacy can be seen not only in scholarships created in their names and some of their siblings, but now in the beauty of the campus itself. When their estate was finalized, the couple directed half of their final gift to scholarships and the other half to campus beautification.

A Legacy of Care: John and Maxine Brinkman’s Lifelong Commitment to Health and Community or John and Maxine Brinkman,

F medicine was never just a

career—it was a calling. Together, they built a life in Mason City grounded in service, family, and community. Today, their legacy continues through the John and Maxine Brinkman Health Fund at NIACC, supporting the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Building a Life Together John, who grew up in Colo, Iowa, studied medicine at the University of Iowa. While in Houston for his residency, he met Maxine, a Johns Hopkins–trained nurse.

They married and eventually settled in Mason City, where John established a respected internal medicine practice.

Their life together included a stint in Honolulu, where John served as an Army Medical Corps Captain and Maxine worked at Queen’s Hospital. After returning to the Midwest, John completed his residency and fellowship, and the couple chose Mason City as the place to raise their family. They welcomed three children—Paul, Sara, and David—and balanced the demands of medicine with family life.

“It really was a partnership,” Maxine said. “John helped me so much—he even learned to cook.”

John’s Leadership in Medicine John’s influence reached far beyond his clinic. He served as president of the Iowa Medical Society, was a fellow of both the American College of Physicians and

the American College of Endocrinology, and later became Mason City Health Director. Teaching was another passion— he trained countless medical students as a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Iowa’s Carver College of Medicine, where he received the Distinguished Service Award in 2004.

He was also a leader in diabetes care long before specialized centers existed, ensuring patients across North Iowa had access to innovative treatment and compassionate care.

Maxine’s Advocacy in Women’s Health Maxine’s career path led her from bedside nursing to leadership at Mercy Medical Center. She helped establish the Mercy Women’s Health Center, secured grants to expand access to mammograms as well as breast cancer care, and created Sister Emily’s Room, a safe space in the ER for survivors of sexual assault.

She became a national advocate for women’s health, serving with the FDA and as president of the National Women’s Healthcare Organization. Yet she never lost sight of her mission in Mason City: ensuring women received the care and dignity they deserved.

Giving Back to North Iowa “Mason City has been known for healthcare for a long time. It’s important to give back to the community that gave us such a good life.”

After John’s passing, their son Paul surprised Maxine by establishing the John and Maxine Brinkman Health Fund at NIACC in their honor.

“I was very proud,” Maxine said. “It was thoughtful and meaningful—something John would have loved.”

A Lasting Legacy The Brinkman Health Fund supports students pursuing healthcare careers, especially medical assistants, nurses, and future professionals training in NIACC’s simulation labs.

Maxine hopes recipients carry forward the same passion she and John shared.

“I hope they love their careers as much as we did—and that they choose to stay in North Iowa, where they can make a difference.”

For the Brinkmans, healthcare was always about more than medicine. It was about people, community, and creating opportunities for others. Their gift ensures that legacy will continue for generations.

NIACC Named an All-Steinway School NIACC joins an elite global group, elevating music education for students North Iowa Area Community College has joined an elite group of institutions around the world in earning the distinguished title of an All-Steinway School. This designation is reserved for colleges, universities and conservatories that demonstrate a deep commitment to excellence in music education by providing their students and faculty the finest musical instruments for practice, instruction and performance.

The new pianos were paid for by private donations to the NIACC Foundation specifically intended for the purchase of pianos.

“The Music Department is thankful for the generosity of donors to support the future of NIACC students,” said Joel Everist, vocal music instructor and director of choral activities at NIACC. The process began ten years ago with a Steinway Model D in the Auditorium and a Steinway Model O for the piano studio in 2015.

The upright models designed by Steinway replace some pianos in the department that were 46 years old. The new Steinway Model B will be used in the choir room for rehearsals with several ensembles, music classes, and student recital performances.

With this honor, NIACC becomes one of only seven two-year colleges nationwide to hold the distinction. For students and faculty, this designation represents more than just a new piano, it is a reflection of NIACC’s dedication to cultivating the highest quality music program and ensuring that aspiring musicians have access to the finest tools available for their craft.

NIACC piano students range in age from elementary school to senior citizens. Practice rooms are in constant use by students.

NIACC also annually hosts the IMTA Piano Festival for students from across the area.

As an All-Steinway School NIACC now provides them the unique opportunity to showcase years of work while playing a superior

piano on campus. NIACC also hosts the ICDA Choir Festival and NIACC Jazz Festival every year, involving thousands of people.

A Legacy of Excellence in Music For over 170 years, Steinway & Sons pianos have been synonymous with craftsmanship, artistry, and performance. By aligning with the All-Steinway standard, NIACC ensures that its students will be trained on the same instruments used by the world’s most celebrated pianists.

The All-Steinway commitment also demonstrates NIACC’s broader dedication to learner success and community engagement. Beyond the classroom, these instruments will enhance performances for the community, offering audiences throughout North Iowa the chance to hear music performed at its highest level.

Steinway pianos are used on the stage of 90% of concert halls in the United States. A Steinway is not made on an assembly line, rather it is built by hand from 12,000 parts in the United States. It takes a team of more than 200 people an entire year to create a Steinway.

NIACC is one of only three All-Steinway schools in Iowa. These new Steinway pianos will meet NIACC’s current needs, while also representing a legacy of instruments that will remain in service on campus for many future generations.

Building for the Future Becoming an All-Steinway School reflects NIACC’s belief that investing in the arts enriches both students and the region. The designation is also a testament to the support of alumni, donors, and community members who recognize the value of music in a comprehensive education.

As NIACC celebrates this milestone, the college looks forward to inspiring the next generation of musicians with instruments that will elevate their practice, performance, and passion for years to come.

Aviation Program NIACC students will soon be taxiing down runways, charting courses through the skies, and preparing to launch careers that will literally take them airborne.

NIACC’s brand-new Aviation Professional Pilot Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree was readied for takeoff in August 2025.

A Bold New Chapter in North Iowa The five-semester program will blend classroom instruction at NIACC with hands-on flight and lab training at Mason City Municipal Airport (KMCW).

The program is offered in partnership with North Iowa Air Service (NIAS), a seasoned flight school/Fixed Base Operator (FBO) whose roots run deep in the region.

According to NIACC’s Dean of Agriculture and Skilled Trades, Dr. Laura Wood, “By offering both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, we’re setting our graduates up for success in one of the most exciting and rewarding industries out there.”

What Students Will Experience

Students will work toward earning an array of certifications, including Private Pilot, Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot, Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) and more.

•

A cohort-based model—initially limited to keep class size manageable and focus on individualized instruction and safety.

Why This Matters for Alumni, the College, & the Region For alumni: This is a proud moment. The institution where you once studied is now branching into one of the most forwardlooking, technically advanced fields—aviation.

For the college: NIACC is responding to a tangible workforce need. The aviation industry remains hungry for qualified pilots and aviation professionals. By offering this program locally, the college is creating pathways for students to secure high-quality, in-demand jobs—and strengthening its ties to regional economic development.

For the region: The partnership with North Iowa Air Service and the use of Mason City’s airport mean that the benefits stay right here in North Iowa. Flight operations, student activity, and training all take place locally, contributing to the regional economy, visibility and talent pool.

Helping Animals, Finding Joy When Joann Fabric closed in 2025, Rachel VanDerLinden saw it as her chance to pursue a lifelong love of animals. With encouragement from 43 North Iowa and NIACC staff, she enrolled in the Dog Grooming program, earned her Derma Bather Certificate, and discovered her favorite part: “shaving and grooming — it is super satisfying.”

Rachel graduated in August 2025 and says the most rewarding part of her journey has been simple: getting to do what she loves and helping animals. Each step of her story has reinforced her decision to take a chance on herself and follow her passion.

Looking ahead, her goals are to continue improving her skills, gain confidence using shears and clippers, and eventually become a full-time professional groomer. Her advice to others:

“It’s all about doing what you love. If you love what you’re doing, you’re going to succeed.”

Vanessa (Jones) Doden ‘07 is employed as an administrative assistant with the Mason City Assessor’s Office.

1980s

Jovian Bauer ‘09 is employed as a transit driver with the City of Mason City.

Staci (Nelson) Andrea ‘20, a NIACC Extreme Makeover finalist, is a local suspense author. Her 4 books: Fraidy Hole, Lake Laps, Beneath Her Lies, and Ghosts in the Glades have placed in many award categories. Ghosts in the Glades won the 2024 Killer Nashville Claymore Award for Best Southern Gothic, the 2024 Maxy Award for Best Thriller, and was a finalist in London’s Page Turner Awards. After losing a finger in a boating accident, her dad designed and patented a simple prosthetic to help her continue her writing and they launched their company, FixADigit, to help others in like situations.

Sandra (Geer) Whitehurst ’84 was hired by Clear Lake Bank and Trust Company in July 1984 and in July 2024 celebrated 40 years of employment with them. She is currently the Assistant Vice President Consumer Lending.

Patrick Palmer ‘85 is an employee and owner of The Computer Guy in Hampton, IA.

New Scholarships Tom Thoma Memorial Scholarship

Steve and Cathie Schulz Scholarship

NIACC Hall of Famer and alumnus, Tom Thoma ‘69 meant a lot of things to a lot of people in North Iowa, especially Mason City. He dedicated most of his life to working at the Globe Gazette, holding several different titles in his decades at the newspaper. He spent countless hours volunteering at The Surf in Clear Lake.

After his stint at the Globe ended, he became a Mason City Councilman. Tom Thoma was extremely committed to NIACC athletics and even helped establish the NIACC student newspaper. Tom Thoma wore a lot of different hats, and was a very, very good friend to many. People thought so much of Tom, upon his passing in 2024, his friends chose to fund an endowed scholarship in his memory. The Tom Thoma Memorial Scholarship assists a Mason City High School graduate who studies full-time at NIACC.

Lifelong educators, Steve and Cathie Schulz established the Steve and Cathie Schulz Scholarship as a way to give back to NIACC. Dr. Steve Schulz retired in 2024 after a decade of service as NIACC’s President. The Schulzes understand that scholarships have the power to transform lives and recognize that financial barriers are one of the greatest obstacles to completing a degree. The Steve and Cathie Schulz Scholarship supports full-time NIACC student athletes.

Class of 1955 Scholarship In 2024, members of the Mason City High School Class of 1953 and Mason City Junior College Class of 1955 (NIACC’s predecessor) endowed a scholarship to assist NIACC students.

These alumni chose to set up the scholarship to offer encouragement to NIACC students who may have financial need.

The Class of 1955 Scholarship assists full-time NIACC students.

Kary S. Paulson Scholarship NIACC Alum and former Foundation Board member, Kary Paulson ’67 believed whole heartedly in the opportunities provided by NIACC. He was quoted during the Keeping NIACC First Campaign saying, “Students are the lifeblood of NIACC and scholarships are a very direct way to help them.” Kary passed away in 2021 and his wife, Carol and their children established the Kary S. Paulson Scholarship to honor the man who loved his family, his community, and NIACC. The Kary S. Paulson Scholarship assists full-time NIACC students enrolled in career and technical programs who are graduates of Mason City High School, Newman Catholic High School, Northwood-Kensett High School, or Forest City High School.

Jerry Dunbar Memorial Scholarship As Mark Tabor reflected on his time in the NIACC dorms, he remembered the impact Jerry Dunbar had on his life. “He did a lot for me—and I know I’m not the only one,” Mark shared. To honor that influence, he established a scholarship in Jerry Dunbar’s memory. Jerry Dunbar was an All-American Honorable Mention running back for Mason City Junior College in 1962. He coached the football team at NIACC from 1977-1985. He served as the baseball coach beginning in 1982 and simultaneously assumed athletic director duties in 1983. He retired in 2001. The Jerry Dunbar Memorial Scholarship assists a full-time NIACC student who lives in the Campus View Housing.

Ray and Fran Randall Memorial Scholarship Mason City Junior College alumnus, Ray Randall ’51 was a realtor, builder, and entrepreneur. Ray was a lifelong Mason Citian and former councilman, who loved where he grew up and wanted to make a difference. Ray and his wife Fran, raised their four boys in Mason City and each of their boys share the love of Mason City as well. The Randall boys (Scott, Marc, Tom, and Brian), knew a NIACC Foundation scholarship in honor of their parents was a great legacy to them. The Ray and Fran Randall Memorial Scholarship assists students in the Building Trades program to purchase the tools they need for program success.

NEW SCHOLARSHIPS

Cornelio and Ninfa Monteon Memorial Scholarship Ninfa Rodriquez Monteon was born in Mason City in October of 1929. She moved to Mexico with her family when she was in third grade. As an adult, Ninfa moved back to the United States and was united in marriage to Cornelio Monteon.

As a talented seamstress Ninfa worked for Mode O’ Day, she made her own clothes, and did alterations for anyone who needed it. She loved socializing with her family and friends.

It was only fitting that, as a lifelong giver, she chose to establish a NIACC scholarship fund through her estate. The Cornelio and Ninfa Monteon Memorial Scholarship assists full-time NIACC students to pursue their education.

Roger and Leah Obrecht Scholarship For Roger and Leah Obrecht serving others was an everyday occurrence. A farmer in the Mason City area, Roger always saw the value in working with one’s hands. Roger also put his hands to work as a volunteer with the Community Kitchen, feeding those in need. He served two years in the United States Army.

He met Leah later in life and the two were married in 1984. Leah enjoyed a 35-year career as a Home Economics teacher. She taught mostly in Nora Springs, Iowa and loved to see her students learn and succeed. Leah also served on the Community Kitchen Board, the St. John’s Episcopal Church vestry, and was a member of the Mason City Garden Club.

Leah passed away in 2005 and Roger in 2024. Their legacy of giving to others will live on through the Roger and Leah Obrecht Scholarship assisting NIACC students studying Agriculture or the Skilled Trades.

Jenny Buls Vrba “Never Back Down” Memorial Scholarship In the summer of 2024, NIACC Athletic Trainer, Mark Vrba established a scholarship to honor his late wife, Jenny.

NIACC Alumna, Jennifer Buls-Vrba ‘04, had a love for fitness and being active, this came second only to the love for her family. She found ways to incorporate both passions as often as she could.

While attending NIACC, Jenny was a member and starting point guard for the women’s basketball team. After NIACC, Jenny was recruited and signed to play basketball at Waldorf University in Forest City, Iowa graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sport & Business Management.

Shortly after graduation, Jenny was hired as an assistant women’s basketball coach at NIACC. Jenny worked for many years at Mason City Clinic and served as Director of Purchasing Services at Mitchell County Regional Health before her passing. In her time outside of work Jenny competed in numerous road races and triathlons and embodied a “full throttle” attitude in all she did.

Jenny’s legacy is one of perseverance, generosity, and devotion to others. The Jenny Buls-Vrba “Never Back Down” Memorial Scholarship honors her memory by supporting students who embody her values: a passion for athletics, a commitment to education, and a heart dedicated to family and community. The scholarship will assist a sophomore member of the basketball team. Jenny’s favorite quote was “Never Back Down” which is something she applied in all aspects of her life.

Schulting Family Scholarship While Merlin Schulting traveled through his own personal healthcare journey, he had many discussions with nurses, nurse aides, and assistants. During these visits, Merlin learned a big hurdle for individuals to actively pursue a registered nursing degree was financial need. When Merlin passed away in 2022, his family knew exactly how to honor his wishes.

Joyce Schulting, Merlin’s widow, and her children, daughter, Jill Schulting Rickoff and son, Kirk Schulting established the Schulting Family Scholarship to assist NIACC nursing students pursuing an Associate Nursing Degree.

Greg and Teri Grupp Scholarship Greg and Teri Grupp established a term scholarship to honor the late Jack Easton a retired NIACC faculty member. Greg shared, “Mr. Easton believed in me at a time when I had little confidence in myself. The communication skills which I acquired in Mr. Easton’s class were invaluable, always front and center in pursuit of my career and service to the community.” He continued, “This scholarship is our way of expressing our gratitude to NIACC, paying it forward, and offering aspiring students the opportunity to realize their potential—perhaps even the unimaginable.” The Greg and Teri Grupp Scholarship will be awarded for two years and will assist two NIACC career students seeking employable skills.

From keychains to cocoa, these spontaneous celebrations remind students that they’re at the heart of everything we do.

Aspen Institute Recognition NIACC is once again in the national spotlight! Recognized by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program as one of the Top 200 community colleges in the nation. NIACC is eligible for the prestigious $1 million Aspen Prize—honoring colleges that lead the way in student success and innovation.

Breaking Ground in Franklin County Excitement is growing in Hampton following this summer’s groundbreaking for the new Franklin County Career Center - a project that will open even more doors for North Iowa students. Supported by a $3 million federal grant and strong local partnerships, the center will offer hands-on training in health careers, advanced manufacturing, and construction for students from area high schools.

When it opens in Fall 2026, the Career Center will not only prepare students for in-demand jobs but also serve as a gathering place for local employers and community members. It’s another way NIACC is helping students and communities across North Iowa grow - together.
