A YOUNG TURI

トゥーリは1938年に生まれ、ノルウェーのサンネスで育ちました。幼い頃からデッサンの授業を受け始め、陶芸家になることを夢見ていました。17歳で陶磁器製造会社スタヴァンゲルフリント社に就職し、1956年から1958年にかけて、オスロ国立美術デザイン大学で陶芸の色彩と装飾を学び陶ました。芸家で装飾家のカリ・ナイキストのもとで起居しながらの学びの日々でした。その後、ベルゲン美術工芸学校でも修学を続け、1958年から1960 年にかけて陶芸を専攻しました。1960年の夏、トゥーリはイギリスに渡り、著名な陶芸家ローズマリー・ミドルトンのもと、クロマー陶器工場でインターンシップを行いました。

Turi, born in 1938, grew up in Sandnes. She began taking drawing classes as a child and dreamed of becoming a potter. At the age of 17, she got a job at Stavanger int. Between 1956 and 1958, she studied at the National College of Art and Design in Oslo, specializing in colour and ornamentation on ceramics and moved in with ceramicist and decorator Kari Nyquist She then continued her education at Bergen School of Arts and Crafts, specializing in ceramics from 1958 to 1960. In the summer of 1960, Turi travelled to England, where she did an internship at Cromer Pottery with the renowned ceramicist Rosemary Middleton.

TURI-DESIGN

Turi started working at Fig o Fajanse in 1960, the same year Norway became a member of EFTA. This marked the end of tari protection for Norwegian industry, and consequently Fig o made a strong push into export markets. They developed a small range of models that could be varied with new decorative patterns. Turi had originally planned to work with forms and sculpting in plaster, but instead, she became busy creating new decorative designs. In 1962, the narrative decoration Lo e was launched, and it became a great success, also in international markets. This was the rst of many narrative decorations, and it was here Turi became widely known as an illustrator. Over the next 20 years, she signed various tableware collections under the name Turi-design.

INSPIRATION

トゥーリは文学の世界、神話、詩、民話から多くのインスピレーションを得てきまし

1960年代初頭から、トゥーリは広く旅をしてきました。夫のブライアン・オリバーと共にヨーロッパを鉄道で旅し、その後、日本、エジプト、ギリシャ、カナダなどを訪れました。美術館や市場で印象に残るものを集め、本やオブジェ、スケッチブックなどを持ち帰りました。

Turi has drawn much inspiration from the literary world, mytholo , poetry, and folklore. Timeless and symbolic stories were spiced up with her sense of humour and everyday details. Her intricate visual narratives, featuring cheerful characters and enchanting environments, are inspired by the people she meets and the places she stays. She spends a lot of time with friends and family in her home with its luscious garden in Sandnes. Since the early 1960s, Turi has travelled extensively. She took a train journey through Europe with her husband, Brian Oliver, and has since visited places like Japan, E pt, Greece, and Canada. At museums and markets, she has gathered impressions and returned home with books, objects, and full sketchbooks.

TURI-ART

1970年代、トゥーリは昼間はフィッギオ社で働き、夜は自宅で機械刺繍と手刺繍を組み合わせた刺繍のタペストリーを制作していました。彼女の芸術活動は徐々に広がり、彼女は『My First Picture Book』の挿絵を描き、いくつもの大きなテキスタイルアート作品を制作しました。最終的に、彼女はフィッギオ社での仕事を辞め、アーティストとしてフルタイムで働くことを決意しました。長い芸術活動を通して、彼女はテキスタイルのアップリケ、紙、そして様々な素材を用いて作品を制作し、そして80歳を超えた今でも、毎日描き続けています。

In the 1970s, Turi worked during the day at Fig o and spent her evenings at home making embroidered tapestries, combining machine embroidery with hand embroidery. Her artistic work gradually expanded, and she illustrated My First Picture Book and created several large textile artworks. Eventually, she left her job at Fig o to pursue a full-time career as an artist. Throughout her long artistic career, she has worked with textile appliqué, paper, and various materials. Turi still draws every day.

LIFE BECOMES A BOOK

美術史家で作家のトルン・ラーセンは、トゥーリ・グラムスタード・オリバーを追いかけ、彼女の人生と作品を記録してきました。ラーセンはオリバーの芸術的キャリアを徹底的に調査し、デザイン、工芸、そして視覚芸術における彼女の膨大な作品を記録しました。その成果が書籍「TURI」として出版されたのです。本書を通して、読者は彼女の多面的な人生に浸ることができます。この展覧会は、デザイナーのフーデル・テイルリンクとサイモン・A・ケアーが、トルン・ラーセンと写真家のマリー・フォン・クローとのコラボレーションを通じ、トゥーリ・グラムスタッド・オリビエールと彼女の作品に出会ったことをきっかけに実現しました。

Art historian and author Torunn Larsen has followed Turi Gramstad Oliver and documented her life and work. Larsen’s extensive research on Oliver’s artistic career has mapped and documented her vast production in design, crafts, and visual arts. This work resulted in the book TURI, where one can read and immerse oneself in her multifaceted life. This exhibition came about after designers Goedele Teirlinck and Simon A. Kjær, through their collaboration with author Torunn Larsen and photographer Marie von Krogh, became acquainted with Turi Gramstad Oliver and her work.

TURI TODAY

80歳を超えたトゥーリ・グラムスタッド・オリビエールは、今もなお精力的に活動し、人々にインスピレーションを与え続けるアーティストです。サンネスにある彼女のスタジオには、ドローイング、テキスタイル、紙や複合メディアを使った実験的な作品まで、所狭しと並んでいます。近年では、2023年にローガラン

美術館で開催される回顧展をはじめ、大規模な展覧会を開催しています。作品集『TURI』の出版後、2024年には、生涯にわたる芸術への貢献が認められ、ローガラン県文化賞を受賞しました。トゥーリの創作活動への情熱は衰えを知らず、キャリアを一貫して変わらぬ好奇心とエネルギーで創作続けています。

At over 80, Turi Gramstad Oliver is still an active and inspiring artist. Her studio in Sandnes is lled with drawings, textiles, and experiments in paper and mixed media. In recent years, she has had major exhibitions, including a 2023 retrospective at Rogaland Kunstsenter. After the publication of the book TURI she received Rogaland County’s Cultural Prize in 2024 for her lifelong contribution to art. Far from slowing down, she continues to create with the same curiosity and ener that has marked her entire career.

80歳を超えた今も、サンドネスのアトリエで日々制作に励むトゥーリ。そこにはドローイング、テキスタイル、紙の実験作などが溢れています。2023年にはローガランド美術センターで大規模な回顧展が開催され、翌2024年にはその功績によりローガランド県文化賞を受賞。生涯を通じて変わらぬ好奇心とエネルギーで創作を続けています。
