PROGRAM The Idaho Concrete Masonry Association (ICMA) sponsored the 37th Annual Design Competition. The guidelines for this project is to design with creative expression featuring the use of the range of CMU products.

WORK This firestation is designed to use primarily CMU and Steel.

These two materials are expressed in the different systems of the design. The different systems include institutional & domestic functions, an apparatus bay for the fire engines, an administration building to facilitate offices, a living area for the firefighters all with CMU and a Steel frame bridge and training facility. The bridge connects the administration through the training facility and out to the living area and apparatus bay below.

The tower, materials and programatic solutions have strengthened the design concept and created a highly identifiable firestation. When an alarm the red lights pulsate to announce the disaster to the community.

New Buildings Institute

PROJECT DETAILS “New Buildings Institute in partnership w/ the Univ. of Idaho and Univ. of Washington has developed a freely available interactive design tool for the design of proven daylighting strategies in a variety of building types.� patternguide.advancedbuildings.net This guide takes existing well daylit buildings and reverse engineers them to show how daylight performs.

As the Project Manager of Univ. of Idaho (IDL Boise), I worked along side the Director of the lab to plan the numerous modifications and execution of each pattern.

Independently I was responsible for all of the modeling, Radiance scripting, simulation studies, post processing images and data, design of layouts, handouts, graphics and architectural drawings.

TOP LIGHTING CLASSROOM PATTERN The case study example is the Mt. Angel Abbey Theological Studies building near Portland, OR. The as designed condition represented is attributed to the Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory at the Univ. of Oregon in addition to SRG Partnership.

The data represents a single view window with a single skylight representing 14% of the floor area, set within a 16’ tall ceiling with sloping t-bar trays, with an angled and staggered aluminum reflector hung below the skylight.

The sloped ceilings improve the distribution of light from the skylights and increase the visual perception of brightness while minimizing shadows. The angled reflector is intended to decrease the illumination directly below the skylight, redirect the brightness onto the sloped ceiling and walls, and minimize the line of sight to the skylight aperture for students seated within the classroom, thus reducing the potential for glare.

PROGRAM The interior was fully renovated with raised ceilings, new walls, and updated finishes and furnishings. The exterior also had new landscaping and a new entrances.

WORK Iterative design process that resulted in photo realistic VRAY renderings of the Baptistry, Ordinance Rooms, Sealing Rooms, Steeple Concourse and the exterior.

PROGRAM The Avista building in Riverfront park will be renovated to address the needs of the Mobius Science Center.

WORK Iterative design process that utilized shipping containers for entry, offices, admin and storage.

A makers space was created for participants to get more hands on with the exhibits. Core and Shell created in Revit and Interior exhibits and containers were modeled in Sketchup.
