NHPTV Connections Wild Affairs

July 2014

Beyond Our Broadcast

July is full of stories of wild affairs within the animal kingdom! On My Wild Affair, there are extraordinary stories of the bonds between humans and their animal companions, including an orphaned baby elephant, an orangutan raised as a human child, a rhinoceros raised in suburbia, and a harbor seal in the human world but remained wild at heart. The Elephant Who Found a Mom tells the heartbreaking story of Aisha, the baby elephant orphan, and Daphne Sheldrick, the woman who became her human foster parent. Their intense bond reaches a crisis point when Daphne leaves Aisha with a babysitter for a few days. Daphne uses the lessons learned from Aisha’s short life to help save other orphaned elephants. On The Ape Who Went to College, delve into the story of an orangutan raised as a human child on an American university campus. And join the search for clues to the fate of an orphaned rhinoceros brought up in a wildlife vet’s home on The Rhino Who Joined the Family.

Is there an American who doesn’t enjoy celebrating the Fourth of July? The fireworks set a great optimistic note, a reminder that our country once beat enormous odds to gain its independence. July also is the start of NHPTV’s new fiscal year. Since we became an independent public television station, largely supported by individual contributors, we appreciate more than ever your help in ensuring that quality television is available in New Hampshire. In June we had the privilege of hosting 50 NHPTV members for our 2nd “State of the Station” event. They saw previews of PBS programs, heard about our new documentaries on grassland birds and the Cog Railway, and had a chance to play a round of Granite State Challenge. They also heard about NHPTV’s reach beyond broadcast: from technology to watch NHPTV anywhere to our educational resources for educators and families. Would you like to join us at the next event? E-mail us at themailbox@nhptv.org and we’ll invite you. Peter Frid, NHPTV President & CEO

Sex in the Wild is a four-part series, presented by anatomist Joy Reidenberg and veterinarian Mark Evans, in which they examine the reproductive behaviors and biology of four species — elephants, orangutans, kangaroos and dolphins — and take an in-depth look at how these animals find and woo the opposite sex. It also explores how they mate, give birth and raise their young in extreme environments. They travel to Africa to explore the unique reproduction challenges of the largest animal on land — the elephant. Find out how females select the strongest mates, why elephants have the longest pregnancy in the animal kingdom and how they safely deliver a 220-pound baby, and witness the remarkable first steps of a newborn calf.
