Fun history: in the early 20th century, newlywed couples would plant two sycamore trees in front of their home. The trees would be bound together, so they would eventually grow into one, symbolizing the marriage. They were called Bride and Groom trees.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

IMPROVING OUR SERVICES AS AN ASSOCIATION

I

am just back in the office from my first meeting as NHLA Board Chairman. After interacting with various Board members, I was struck by how truly fortunate NHLA is to have such an impressive mix of industry leaders sacrificing their time to help NHLA prosper.

I was particularly pleased to see the engagement and commitment of our newest Board members George Bach, John Griffin, Joey Josey, Dennis Mann, Cameron McRae and George Swaner. Their contributions are already making a difference in charting a new course for our future. The fall Board meeting is typically when NHLA staff reports on progress toward their 2018 goals. I am pleased to report that your association is gaining strength in key value areas, including Inspection Services, with the introduction of our newest member value, the Sawmill Yield Analysis and Membership, which is very close to bringing in 100 new members this year. I don’t believe I can recall the last time we had 100 new members in one year! Convention attendance also broke records for an event outside of the U.S. We wrapped up the first day with staff presentations on 2019 Business Plans and budget goals. I believe I speak for the Board when I say we all saw new opportunities to deliver on our promise of new and relevant member value in 2019. As we reviewed plans for next year, we also saw just how far we have come in NHLA's efforts to work in collaboration with other trade associations. Our industry is fortunate in that we have many regional and national association companies across the country. And while each association offers unique value to their respective memberships, all of our associations can benefit from increased collaboration with each other.

4

D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 8 H A R D W O O D M AT T E R S

This past year, NHLA collaborated with the Hardwood Federation and 11 other national and regional associations to support the development of the soon to be released, first ever, Hardwood Industry Economic Impact Study. Over $100,000 was raised from association partners to help fund the study. This important study will play a critical role in making all our government relations activities more successful. We have also worked with AHMI and HMA to develop a Hardwood Leadership Program scheduled for January 28-30 on the grounds of the BB&T Leadership Institute in Greensboro, NC. The program will offer three days of professional leadership training, with the goal to help people become dynamic leaders, increase employee retention and improve the bottom line for companies. Whether you are a large corporation or a family run company with emerging “gen-next leaders, this program is tailored for you. Registration is only $450 for the three-day class, so seats are filling up fast. I urge you to register yourself and one of your emerging leaders to attend the retreat together. Finally, NHLA is are also working alongside AHMI and HMA to examine the potential of Hardwood CLT as a means to reinvigorate the domestic market by accelerating the acceptance of HCLT into the building codes. We have a deal of research and testing ahead of us, but through collaboration I am certain we will accomplish this audacious goal. These are all great success stories that clearly illustrate the effectiveness of association collaboration. If we can successfully collaborate on educational, government affairs and new business opportunities, what is the next target? I would like to suggest that promotion be at the top of the list. In my opinion, the most effective strategy for promoting hardwood products is best developed by the industry associations and

HARDWOOD IMPACT STUDY PARTNERS American Hardwood Export Council Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers Inc. Decorative Hardwoods Association Hardwood Manufacturers Association Indiana Hardwood Lumberman’s Association Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association Lake States Lumber Association Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association National Wood Flooring Association Railway Tie Association Wood Component Manufacturers Association their leadership working collaboratively to get the job done. That’s why I am challenging all industry associations and their leadership to come together to define what the path looks like moving forward. My thanks to Brent Stief and our recently retired Board, and current Board members for creating, and following through on the opportunities to collaborate with these partner associations. Like our industry, NHLA is evolving to serve the emerging needs of our members. And while I personally believe we should never overlook the traditions of our past, collaboration should be seen as an important pathway to our future. Such opportunities will be an important focus for me over the next two years. I would like to hear your thoughts. Please email me at d.murray@nhla.com to share your views on collaboration.

EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT

THE INSPECTOR TRAINING SCHOOL CELEBRATES THE 187TH CLASS The National Hardwood Lumber Association celebrated the graduation of the 187th class of the Inspector Training School on Friday, November 16, 2018. Twenty-one students completed the 12-week traditional program with an additional six students completing the Progressive Program for a total of twenty-seven graduates.

D

ana Spessert, Chief Inspector and Dean of Education welcomed and thanked the families, friends and employers who supported the students during their time away from home and traveled so far to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class. Brian Horner, himself a graduate of the School and father to Gina Horner, a member of the 187th Class delivered an inspirational address. “I want to recognize those who paid their own way, who are over 40, those who are from a foreign country, and those who are female. It takes a brave person who is not the norm. I admire you for how brave you are because no one wants to step outside the norm anymore.”

8

Brian understands the need to be brave in order to take a risk and change your life. At age 42 Brian, quit his job and took the leap to become a NHLA trained lumber inspector and is now the yard manager at Yellow Springs Hardwoods where his daughter will also work after graduation. Brian is following in the footsteps of his brother Bruce Horner of Abenaki Timber – a ITS graduate and member of the NHLA Board of Managers. Mr. Horner left the class with these words of advice: “Work for your employer, not against them. Don’t bend the rules. And grade the lumber as if you were the buyer and the seller.” W W W. RULES CORNER

SPLIT, CHECK OR SHAKE: IT'S HARD TO DEFINE

by DANA SPESSERT, NHLA Chief Inspector

O

ver the course of my career, I have made the statement “cutting out boards to determine the grade is easy, the hard part is determining what is a defect and what is not.”

The other difficulty is determining what the defect is classified as because getting that wrong can cause issues for some grades with limitations. In this month’s article I will discuss these types of defects that have on occasion created confusion.

Now with all of this being said, it is wise to remanufacture boards when selling them to make the appearance of the boards more palatable for your customers. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, d.spessert@nhla. com or 901-399-7551.

SPLIT, CHECK OR SHAKE • The “Split”, as defined in the NHLA Rules Book is “a lengthwise separation of the wood, due to the tearing apart of wood cells.” • A similar type of defect is “Check” and it is defined in the NHLA Rules Book as “a lengthwise separation of the wood that usually extends across the rings of annual growth and commonly results from stresses set up in wood during seasoning”. • One more defect that can have a lot of similarities to the ones already mentioned, is “Shake”. Shake is defined as “a separation along the grain, the greater part of which occurs between the rings of annual growth”. All three of these terms are used to describe a defect that is a separation in the wood. The “Split” limitation on FAS in the NHLA Rules Book, under Standard Grades, paragraph 58, states: “Splits shall not exceed in the aggregate in inches in length twice the surface measure of the piece, except when one foot or shorter and covered by Paragraph 59. Splits may diverge up to one inch to the lineal foot, except when one foot or shorter and covered by Paragraph 59”. It is my understanding that this limitation was created to limit splits in the end of the boards and not to limit separation of the grain in the interior or from the edge of the boards. A simple way to think of this is to categorize these three separate defects as follows: A Split is from the ends of the board, a Check is in the interior of the board and a separation extending in from the edge of the board is Shake*. *I do not want to confuse anyone on the definition of shake as shake can be anywhere on the board and should be carefully considered as shake is considered unsound. When there are multiple separations in the grain at any one area of the board, regardless of the location it could be an indication of shake.

T

he National Hardwood Lumber Association held its 121st Annual Convention & Exhibit Showcase presented by Rossi Group October 2-4 in Toronto, Canada.

The 2018 NHLA Annual Convention kicked off on Tuesday, October 2 with a welcome reception, sponsored by Cascade Hardwood Group, bringing together approximately 1,000 hardwood industry professionals. The gathering was the perfect time to network with people in the industry and to catch up with long-time partners. On Wednesday, Ted Rossi opened the convention with a rousing speech about how his company, Rossi Group, recovered from a

devastating fire thanks to member connections made through NHLA. Mr. Rossi also thanked NHLA in assisting his employees while the sawmill was being rebuilt. Instead of being unemployed during the sawmill clean-up and rebuild phase, seven employees had the opportunity to complete the NHLA Inspector Training School program on location at Emporium Hardwoods and become certified lumber inspectors. The Opening Session Keynote Speaker Paul Moya was sponsored by Pennsylvania Lumbermens Mutual Insurance. Moya, a multigenerational expert and CEO of Millennial Labs delivered a powerful address outlining his studies on segmentation marketing and generational behavior. Mr. Moya explained different ways to interpret and act on human behavior in the marketplace. W W W. N H L A .C O M

He also presented viable solutions to the pressures of growing operations on a large scale, while engaging and retaining Millennial employees and consumers. Another notable event of the Opening Session included stirring renditions of the Canadian and American National Anthems, sung by the incomparable Norm Murray. It was Murray’s last time singing the National Anthem at an NHLA convention, as he retires at the end of the year. After the opening session, Ted Rossi joined Paul Moya for the ribbon cutting of the Exhibit Showcase featuring over 100 hardwood industry specific companies. The first full-day of the convention, wrapped up with an after-hours private reception at the Hockey Hall of Fame sponsored by Upper Canada Forest Products. Convention attendees were able to tour the venue, networking with industry leaders while enjoying the displays, cocktails, and hors-d’oeuvres. Of course, the Hockey Hall of Fame is home to the Stanley Cup, and guests had the opportunity to have their photos taken with the iconic trophy.

Day two of the Annual Convention featured the NHLA Board of Manager elections, where Darwin Murray of McClain Forest Products became the new president of NHLA. The membership also elected a new vice president, Jeff Wirkkala of Hardwood Industries, Inc., and seven new board members. The new board members include George Bach of East Ohio Hardwood Lumber Co.; John Griffin of Frank Paxton Lumber Co.; Joey Josey of Josey Lumber Company; Darrell Keeling of Northwest Hardwoods; Dennis Mann of Baillie Lumber Co.; Cameron McRae of McRae Lumber Co. Ltd.; and George Swaner of Swaner Hardwood Co. Inc. Thursday’s General Session, sponsored by Pennsylvania Lumbermens Mutual Insurance, featured Keynote Speaker Andy Goodman, the co-founder and director of the Goodman Center. Mr. Goodman’s presentation centered on how to reach more people through effective storytelling when promoting your company. The NHLA Annual Convention presented a variety of educational topics. The first educational session was hosted by AHEC Executive Director, Mike Snow, who provided a detailed update on U.S. hardwood exports to the world. In his presentation, sponsored

Building the Future with Hardwood CLT was another education session that stood out. The seminar was presented by Andrew Waugh, the founding director of Waugh Thisleton Architects, and Dr. Henry Quesada, an Associate Professor with the Department of Sustainable Biomaterials at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. In their session, they discussed how the hardwood lumber industry has great opportunities with the Cross Laminated Timber market. Josh Baron, the co-founder and partner at Banyan Global, led a lively panel discussing the five essential tools every family business can use to help set the stage for multi-generational success. The panel included W. Garner Robinson of Robinson Lumber Co., Jon Syre of Cascade Hardwood Group, and Jeff Wirkkala of Hardwood Industries, Inc. NHLA was proud to hold an educational seminar about the new NHLA Yield Analysis Program, hosted by NHLA Chief Inspector, Dana Spessert. The program is designed exclusively for sawmill operators. It evaluates which log diameter and grade is the most lucrative, allowing sawmills to focus their buying strategies on purchasing logs that will generate the highest profits. The Great White North Gala

When beta testing the Yield Analysis program earlier this year, NHLA was able to identify an average revenue increase of $430,000 per mill. According to Spessert, “Quality control testing will provide each sawmill with the time needed to concentrate on their mill’s other needs, like safety, employee training, and equipment repair/ replacement. These small details can result in large returns and allow companies to manage their operations more efficiently.” Thursday’s education sessions began with “Logistics & Transportation: Here and Now,” sponsored by Hardwood Distributors Association. Andy Moses, the Senior Vice-President of global products for Penske Logistics, spoke about transportation services, supply chains, and future trends and technological advances, including autonomous vehicles and more. Bryan F. Thornton, the founder and CEO of Net Reaction, LLC delivered an education session about preventing cyber-attacks. The seminar examined new trends in cybersecurity and how to prevent your company from falling victim to scams by implementing the appropriate security controls. Another education session that drew big crowds was presented by Brooks Mendall, the President and CEO at Forisk. Mr. Mendall focused on tying capital investment trends in North America’s forest industry to the dynamics of hardwood log markets and addressed questions from the audience.

The final education session was hosted by Andy Goodman, the cofounder and director of the Goodman Center. Goodman delivered an in-depth workshop as a follow-up to his Keynote address about storytelling. In his session, Goodman went deeper into specific ways organizations can use stories to advance their mission. The convention ended in style with the Great White North Gala, where attendees celebrated three days of making new connections and strengthening existing relationships with dinner, door prizes, and dancing to live music performed by the Truly Band. The Great White North Gala was sponsored by Brewco, Inc, Cherry Forest Products, King City/Northway Forwarding LTD., McGriff Insurance Services National Forest Product Practices, TradeTec, Wood-Mizer, LLC, and WoodEye. As always, the NHLA Convention was a great time to catch up with fellow members, network with clients and potential clients and learn from peers, speakers, and presenters.

The 2019 NHLA Annual Convention & Exhibit Showcase will be held October 2-4 at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana. W W W. N H L A .C O M
