– Don’t wait for internship advertisements to come up, advises Deniss Aksjonovs, an MIB-student from Latvia. Dozens of companies come to NHH every year to advertise themselves amongst potential employees. Unfortunately, their internship opportunities are either meant for Norwegian speaking students or the recruiting process takes place once a year. However there are still several ways to get an internship.

Another way to an internship in a desired company is to offer some unique competencies which can substitute a lack of Norwegian language knowledge. Anna Nikulina, a non-Norwegian speaking ENE student from Latvia, highlighted that finding an internship is harder for those who do not speak Norwegian. – I believe that internationa l students can compensate with their diverse cultural backgrounds, she says. Fluent in Portugese, she was hired as an intern by Bergen Energi to perform market research on the Brazilian energy market: – No matter where you are, it is always hard to find a local job when you are an international student, Nikulina comments. – But the companies that are expanding internationally have to find people who understand the foreign culture and mentality. WORTH THE EFFORT Both students find that they have to put in a lot of effort in order to succeed. – With all the applications it requires a lot of effort to obtain internship opportunities. Asked whether they recommend international students to work in Norway, Aksjonovs and Nikulina replied ‘definitely yes’. – It allows you to learn about the real world Norwegian working culture, which is totally different from
others, Aksjonovs said. – I work in a very supportive environment, along with my Norwegian development and also earn substantial financial rewards, he says.

If you’re looking for a place to hang out, to relax and to maybe even do a bit of school work, then the Cacti Art Café is the place for you. Located in Bryggen, the place is perfect for students looking for a unique café experience. It’s a locally run establishment; a combination of café, art gallery
and shop. According to owner and operator, Niles Friis, it’s been a «step by step expansion», to create a café that is a «little more original, a little bit different». Cozy and com for ting, the atmosphere is calm and pleasant. It’s easy to spend your time nestled in among the couch cushions, admiring the contemporary art on display or just watching people stroll by, while enjoying the nice and easy background music. A variety of food and drinks are offered, all for fairly reasonable, and student friendly, prices. Inside the café, there is a mini shop that provides an extensive collection of candies, chocolates and fudge, in case you’re looking for a sweet treat.
