“The earth has music for those who listen”
- George Santayana -
Natural sounds formed by birds are one of few arts that have been lost in modern cities. Because of the ideology of humans positioning themselves above nature, the clearing of native vegetation for agriculture, industry, and housing has caused the massive extinction of a lot of bird species due to habitat loss over the past two decades.
Ho Chi Minh City, like most cities, was developed around the Saigon River as river basins provided the best natural environment for cultivation. There are many steps in the wrong direction of urban development and poor designs from the 20th century which caused serious damage to biodiversity and native animal habitat in Ho Chi Minh City.
The outcome of this research will be a number of proposals purpose-designed to upgrade and adapt existing heritage in the urban realm for the provision of safe bird habitat and to reconcile the relationship between local architecture and the natural landscape in Ho Chi Minh City
