According to Canberra Vegetation Structure Map, vegetation in Mawson are all urban vegetation*. The flowing water along Athllon Drive and Yamba Drive come from Yarralumla Creek (now largely used as stormwater drains). The blue path highlighted shows likelihood of the watercourse to be flooded during a 1% AEP** flood. The hazard ranking along these rivers are considered high***.

Mawson Primary School is surrounded by residential pockets. Due to that, students living in the area will prefer walking and cycling as their transport modes.

However, as there is no designated bike paths along Ainsworth Street, students do not enjoy access to pedestrian friendly paths. The site is also adequately accessible to buses.

Mawson PS is well fenced up with parts of its fence sitting before the title boundary.

The “front of house” areas such as hall and reception are located at the front of school.

As part of the new face of the school, the height of the new hall is matched up to the existing two storey primary block.The gradient of the roof allows for the provision of solar panels whilst the roof facing south has skylights for daylight to come through without the issue of harsh light or glare.

SECTION A-APROPOSED HALL The importance of height variation is being tested for this proposal. A min. clearance height of 2100mm is made for both the seating area and standing balcony. Part of the building facing South has large operable openings to allow daylight and natural ventilation to come through.
