CUTTING A SECTION ACROSS ENGINEERING BUILDING

Assignment description: The assignment was to draw a section of our building, the engineering building.

We were given a section line and were supposed to take measurements in real life then draw the section using these measurements.

The experience was more hands on and realistic than previous assignments.

There is no room for interpretation: there is a right and a wrong. This was challenging because differences in measurements could mean mistakes in the drawings. Additionally, this was the first technical drawing we had done, so I wasn’t familiar with things like standard wall thickness, the indicators for glass in a drawing, etc.

The experience was challenging but it taught me things that I used in later projects and it was useful as not every project will be open to interpretation, sometimes there is a strict correct and incorrect.

The experience was good because, although I wasn’t able to do it correctly at the time, I now have learned from my mistakes.

Analysing what went well and not well, the parts that did not go well were simply out of a lack of knowledge.

For future reference, what I could do differently is focus on learning how to do the technical things correctly and, when I don’t know something, either read up about it or ask someone who will know. -

Transverse Travel Wrap TRAVEL DIAGRAM

The assignment was to create a diagram of the path that I take in university. It should reflect the things I see, the things I feel, etc. in the places I most frequent.

This was an enjoyable project as it allowed me to reflect on my time in university, a place I spend most of my time in. I wanted to truly reflect where I spend my time and why and what I feel in those places.

While doing the project I was excited and was having lots of ideas, however after the project, I was disappointed because I got a bad grade.

However, the experience was positive because looking back at the feedback and the project, I was able to make adjustments to make the travel diagram more clear (putting numbers to indicate the flow and adding arrows to the end of the lines to make the flow easier to follow).

The negative parts were because I had put a lot of effort into doing the project while still not understanding Photoshop very well. The positive parts were because I was able to reflect on the project after some time.

From this experience, I have learned to take criticism easier and to take a step back to evaluate my projects better

Transverse Travel Wrap WRAP STUDY

The assignment was to take an everyday object and cut it in half, draw a section drawing of the object, then come up with a way to make the object more sustainable.

I chose an old pair of shoes. I cut the shoe in half and researches the interior and exterior of a shoe to be able to come up with alternative materials.

One of the alternatives I produced, however, ended up not actually being better for the environment.

During the project, I was not very interested and just wanted to finish it. Now, I still don’t consider it one of the more interesting and engaging projects we did, however I would give it more attention if I were to do it again.

This experience was good because we were able to draw a section seeing the actual section line and cutting into the object, not just imagining.

This was a neutral experience, the only negative was coming up with an invalid solution which could have been avoided with better research and understanding of the topic overall.

I learned to give projects more attention to be able to do them correctly and to be able to understand what I am doing and saying. In the future I will do better research.

LINEAR AND GEOMETRIC PATTERN USING NATURAL ELEMENT COLOR PALETTE+

QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE COLOR PALETTE FROM THE NATURAL ELEMENT

The assignment was the select an object found in nature and extract the colors from it to create a color palette.

From this color palette we were supposed to make a quantitative and qualitative analysis as well as a linear and geometric pattern.

I chose a rock I had found after a football match because it was split so the colors from the inside were showing. I also thought it would be more unique as most people were doing flowers.

I was excited for this project because it was the beginning of the new project and would be the basis for the next 2 parts of the project. Also, because when I showed my object, I was told it was interesting

In the situation, I wanted to focus and do this project better than the previous.

After I finished this part of the project initially, I had done the geometric and linear patterns incorrectly so I redid them for the pin-up. This portion went well because I received positive feedback when I went for my discussion about my new patterns. It encouraged me to pay better attention to directions and also take the initiative to redo things I have done incorrectly.

What went well was when I redid the patterns because it resulted in good feedback which encouraged me to do better. What didn’t go well was me doing the patterns wrong in the first place.

SELECTED NATURAL ELEMENT: A ROCK THAT WAS SPLIT, REVEALING ITS COLORS FROM THE INSIDE

I thought the assignment was too simple and over thought it and didn’t read the brief well enough, therefore I ended up doing it incorrectly.

From this experience is that reading the brief is very important and to not over-think assignments.

If given the same assignment again.

I wouldn’t do anything different however I would go into it with a different mindset.

SCARAB ORIGAMI FROM BELOW SHOWING THE FOLDS

The assignment was to create our own design using origami and kirigami, then to create a diagram of how to make it.

I created a scarab. I wanted to make the design from my mind and not something off of the internet, so, I kept folding and cutting papers until I reached something that looks like anything. Then, I fiddled some more until I reached the design of the scarab.

During this situation, I felt a bit lost because I felt I wasn’t familiar with origami and kirigami enough to be able to make a real design from my mind.

What was good about this experience is that it challenged me to try something I’m not good or familiar with. I watched youtube videos to learn more about origami and coming up with your own designs first. What was bad about this experience is that my design doesn’t have any utility or use for it, and this was something required.

From this situation, I learned that meeting the requirements of the assignment is just as important as being able to create something unique.

If I had to do it again, id do research on designs and try to build on one or take inspiration for my own design.

Color Fold Light LIGHT

This assignment was to create a light fixture. The light fixture should use the natural color palette from the first part of this project.

I created a desk lamp with a shade made out of a geometric pattern of alternating triangles. I wanted to do this assignment as correctly as I can and produce a working lamp.

During this situation, I felt inspired because the idea of my design came to me during the lecture of the assignment brief. I also felt intrigued because I like working on projects that have practical work instead of just drawing and designing (making the lamp actually work with the lightbulb).

This experience was positive in that I was able to finish it on time and I was able to execute it mostly how I wanted, with exception to one mechanism I wasn’t able to implement. It was also positive because it was shown in the best works which inspired me to do better in future projects.

Things went well because I had a plan from day one of the project and I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

I learned from this situation to be prepared and get inspired to be able to get the work done early.

Stepped Water Labyrinth STEPPED

The assignment was the create a stepped water labyrinth with layers either using an orthogonal or topography approach.

I made mine using the topography approach.

Although this assignment is not that difficult, I felt confusing because the assignment brief wasn’t clear about specifications. Also, at the time I wasn’t familiar with sketchup or autocad so I faced difficulties in using them.

What was good about this experience it that it familiarized me with sketchup and helped me understand a little more about making physical models.

What didn’t go well is that I was a bit late in laser cutting the model and had limited time to put it together.

I was able to learn sketchup through trial and error and I had to push myself because it was essential to this project.

I was late because I wasn’t able to understand autocad at the time and didn’t know how to draw the model for the laser cutter.

From this situation, like others, I learned to get my tasks done early and do proper research and practicing so that when I go to create the final product, it is not rushed or substandard.

Stepped Water Labyrinth STEPPED WATER

The assignment was to create a model of a stepped water labyrinth with spaces within where people can experience different senses and feelings. We were asked to use stone, light, and water to create these experiences. I created my model with a semi-covered entrance that leads to the bottom of a pond, where there is stone and plants.

Then there is a stair leading out of the pond and to an exit that is close and intimate and has flowers hung on the sides. During this situation, I felt like the project was a repeat of the previous but larger. However, later in the project, after creating the model I felt excited about creating the spaces and the experiences and realized the difference between this project and the last. What went well is that I was pleased with my model and felt like if it was a real place, I would want to be there. What didn’t go well is that I submitted it late because I laser cut it late. Although, this caused me to really be familiarized with autocad because, since I did it outside of university, it was the first time I created a model on it. I learned to finish ahead of deadlines in case anything happens and it doesn’t go exactly according to plan.

COMPETITION “IN-THE-BOX”

The assignment was to create a covered seating area on campus that would seat 4-8 people. The design should reflect student wants and needs.

I was excited for this project because everyone I know on campus, myself included, is always saying that it needs more spaces. I was a bit overwhelmed because the project came right before finals.

What was good about this experience is that it gave us experience with architectural competitions and gave us experience in making models that can be realistically implemented.

What was bad about this experience was the stress of finishing everything, especially since our initial design was rejected. What didn’t go well can be attributed to being late, in a rush, and not having planned working on the project better. What I learned from this situation is to have a plan from the beginning and stick to it. Divide work evenly in a group project so that the work can get done early, well, and with minimum stress.

If I were to do this project again, I would spend time trying to do it correctly from the beginning so that in the end, I’m not just trying to finish anything quickly.
