decoration ideas, dreading a last-minute, stressful dash around town, consider having a rainy (or maybe snowy!) craft day with the kids. It’s a great way to spend time together, it costs next to nothing and they’ll be excited about giving presents (not just receiving them!).

Here are our top Christmassy makes for toddlers upwards…

1. Bake Christmas cookies

A firm favourite with kids, and with sweet-toothed friends and family who receive them! You could even take the kids along to a local bakery for icing inspiration! Pick up some Christmas-shaped cookie cutters from supermarkets, eBay or Lakeland and the BBC Good Food website has lots of yummy recipes.

2. Potato-printed wrapping paper

A classic and affordable craft, cut a potato in half and carefully cut out a simple design eg a star or Christmas tree. Buy poster paint and plain paper from a craft supplier and let your kids design their own wrapping paper and gift tags – they’ll make a big impact under the tree.

3. Hand (and foot!) printed cards

You can’t have a craft session without a bit of mess! Little ones will love dipping their feet in green paint and adding a footprint to a blank card. Add three finger-printed red ‘berries’ so it looks like mistletoe hanging down, and caption it ‘under the mistletoes!’ Alternatively, handprints of green paint overlapping in a circle make a lovely Christmas wreath card.

4. Jam jar candle holders

Simple and effective, empty glass jars make lovely candle holders. Children can decorate the outside by adding glue and then sticking sequins, glitter or tissue paper squares, or tying their favourite Christmas ribbon around the top.

Add a candle and watch the light shine through beautifully.

And if your children are too young for real candles, you can pick up battery-operated tea-lights – safe and still bright!

kids Arnold Girls Help Celebrate 30 Years of Rainbows

500 girls aged 5-7 from all over Notts were out partying back in September to mark 30 years of Rainbows, Girlguiding’s section for its youngest members.

The girls, their leaders and a team of volunteer helpers gathered at Wheelgate Theme Park near Farnsfield for a huge party. Joining in the celebrations were members of 1st Arnold Rainbows, including Elissa and Bella (pictured above), who are both aged seven. ‘It's been amazing today, especially the Rollercoaster,’ they chimed, adding ‘We do loads of nice things at Rainbows - we play games and have lots of fun!’

All the Rainbows made the most of Wheelgate Park’s array of activities - including the Animal Adventure Zone, the Clip Clop Pony Rides, the Land of the Pharaohs and the Alien Galaxy Zone – before joining other units in a party tent for a celebratory tea and disco.

Starting aged 5, Rainbows are the youngest members of Girlguiding: they usually meet in very small groups, so a gathering on this scale is the largest event some of them have ever attended. Girlguiding Nottinghamshire runs 116 Rainbow units across the county and all divisions were represented at the party.

er 2049: Blade Runn lood Flesh and B When it comes to revisiting the classic sci-fi movies of the 80s, it never goes particularly well. Will the Blade Runner sequel sully the reputation of the original cult classic or strengthen its legacy?

The story of Blade Runner 2049 swaps out the grizzled human veteran detective Decker, played

by Harrison Ford, for replicant (biorobotic android) detective K, played by Ryan Gosling. With the discovery of something that could shake the world of both humans and replicants to nothing but rubble, K must find who is involved and retire them, permanently.

The first aspect of the film that wowed from the very start of 2049 was how amazing it sounded.

The score was always pitch perfect and instantly set the mood for the scene to come.

2049’s visuals are outstanding. From the sights of a world completely taken over by ugly grey blocks that reach high into the sky, to the mind blowing work the visual effects team did on hologram girlfriend Joi (Ana de Armas), the visual trickery leaves you transfixed.

Gosling was a perfect vehicle for the audience to experience the world of Blade Runner through.

You can’t help but empathise with this duty bound android that feels a higher purpose to his life and can’t help but explore the possibilities of said purpose.

Other stand-outs in the cast include Ana de Armas’ turn as Joi. Playing a hologram programmed to love its owner (K) is a hard character to make believable. Armas nails it and also makes the romance the character was built for, compelling enough for the audience to fall for her programming. During the film you’ll find yourself forgetting that these two were literally programmed to be in love and rooting for their happiness.

Sylvia Hoeks as the villainous replicant Luv was a joy to watch. Hoek’s brings a depth

to the character that both captivates and intrigues.

Programmed as Wallace’s enforcer, Hoeks’ performance felt like every fibre of her being was trying to recoil in horror from his disgusting methods, but programming rules all in the replicant’s world leading her down a dark path of yearning for supremacy over her fellow androids so she can stand side by side with her malevolent master. Hoeks’ superb acting, combined with this interesting character arch, made for a memorable and deeply compelling villain for 2049.

From the incredible score, impactful sound design, awe inspiring landscapes, mind blowing visuals, twisting and compelling story, and incredible acting that has brought to life some of the most interesting and thought provoking characters of the year this film is a winner.

Pleasant Sunday Afternoon

Anthony Higginbottom was the first headteacher of the British School in Arnold. As well as his involvement in the day to day running of the school, he was a great advocate of education for all. This included those who had not received an education when they were young.

One of the local projects to which he gave his full support was the Pleasant Sunday Afternoon (PSA) classes in Arnold. For many years he was its life and soul, serving as president until shortly before his death.

The PSA movement was started by John Blackham, a linen draper from West Bromwich who, like Anthony, was a member of the Ebenezer Congregational Church. In 1875, Blackham journeyed to Birmingham Town Hall to hear some visiting evangelists. The hall was full, with a crowd of 4000 people and he couldn’t get in so he was directed to another meeting at the nearby 1000 seater Steelhouse Lane Congregational Church. In this large church there were only about 30 men present. Blackham thought about what he had experienced at the two venues. ‘I learnt how not to do it’; ‘I realized that we must give men a service neither too long nor too learned.

We must avoid dullness, prolixity, gloom and constraint’. Back in West Bromwich he and a few friends went out onto the streets to promote their next meeting.

The following Sunday 120 young men turned up at the Ebenezer Chapel. This was the first gathering of the Pleasant Sunday Afternoon (PSA) movement.

Within 10 years its popularity had spread not only throughout the Black Country, but across the Midlands and beyond.

In Arnold, with Anthony Higginbottom’s help, the PSA started a number of classes and groups covering a large range of subjects. Many of these were held in the British School.

One of the groups was the PSA Flower and Horticultural Society. By August 1890 this had grown sufficiently large

for it to have its first public show. This took place in the main hall of the British School. Prizes were awarded for the best entry in each class and Anthony Higginbottom himself was awarded one of the prizes. There were prizes for children’s exhibits as well as for adults. The wild flower section was won

by William Swift. As well as the static exhibits there were demonstrations, including one about bee keeping by Mr Goaling. Music for the visitors was provided by two local bands, the Arnold Albion Brass Band and the Ebenezer Orchestral Band. The latter was conducted by Mr W.R Parkinson. Both bands were well known and well liked, performing in the local area and beyond for many years.

The whole event proved to be a great success and became an annual event.

Over time the event grew and grew and became a separate society, the Arnold Horticultural Society, attracting a large number of exhibits and visitors each year.

From small beginnings, large things grew. Pun intended!

A Momentous Occasion 9 December 1967, 50 years ago this year, was a momentous occasion for the people of Arnold and the surrounding area.

Arnold Town FC came into being in the sixties. The Saints, fondly known as St Mary’s FC - used to play behind St Mary’s Church during the early part of the last century, before moving to the Gedling Road ground, then together with Arnold Kingswell FC they became Arnold FC. They first entered the FA Cup in 1964 and in 1967 reached the 1st Round Proper when they had to play Bristol Rovers.

The choice by the management and committee to play the game on their home ground was to pay dividends in future years. Noel Simpson, manager at the time, wrote in a letter; “we are always striving to make improvements, and as a result of this first class draw, hoping, with the blessing of Arnold Council, to go ahead with another stand.”

The Saturday afternoon of the game Arnold was awash with colour, high spirits and expectation! Local businesses, Arnold Council, Arnold Cricket Club and the Home Brewery all pulled together with the committee and organised a spectacular event that still resonates today.

In front of 3390 fans, Arnold FC lost 0-3.

However the legacy of this match cannot be overstated.

It allowed Arnold FC to build another stand, which, along with the installation of floodlights, brought a higher level of football to the town. Notable ex-players and managers brought their teams to play at Gedling Road; like Geoff Hurst, who managed Telford United and Jim Smith who brought a Birmingham City team that included Archie Gemmil, Colin Todd and Frank Worthington. Leicester City and Port Vale also played at the ground.

A little known fact about the Bristol Rovers team that day was that one of their substitutes was a young player called Laurie Lloyd. Lloyd went on to be signed

by Brian Clough in his halcyon years at Nottingham Forest.

It would be another 10 years before Arnold FC repeated this achievement when the drew with Port Vale at Gedling Road before being beaten 2-5 in the replay at Vale Park.

After a three month closure for essential maintenance and repair work, Arnold Leisure Centre has reopened. A brand new external roof and internal suspended ceiling has been installed along with a new lighting system in the pool area, upgrade of the heating system and work has also been done to improve the interior of the centre. The changing facilities have also been improved with the installation of new hair dryers and straighteners.

The roof has been installed with energy efficient insulation which will reduce the costs of the upkeep of the 25 metre pool, keeping it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

The centre, situated near Arnold town centre is also home to the Bonington Cinema and Theatre which has had a new heating and cooling system installed alongside the recently installed state-of-the-art high definition cinema screen and surround sound improving the cinema experience even further.

Councillor Henry Wheeler, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Health and Well-being said; “I’m very happy that the leisure centre is now open again, I’d like to thank the residents, parents and swimming clubs for their patience whilst we had this essential work done. The swimming pool looks great now and residents will notice the difference when they return.”

ARNOLD SWIMMING CLUB NEWS

2017 Club Championships September and October witnessed Arnold Swimming Club members completing another fantastic Club Championships. A huge thank you goes to all the volunteers who made this event such an amazing success. The first day of competition saw 516 personal bests, 11 club records broken, and 179 County Qualification Times Set. The final day of Championships also had 231 personal bests achieved and 1 new Club Record. THUMBS UP to all Arnold swimmers who participated

Arnold Swimmers Gala Successes Arena League Round 1 Gala On Saturday 14th October, Arnold swimmers headed to Bramcote to compete and their fantastic performance on the night obtained them first place. This was down to brilliant team work and hard work in training that came together to deliver well deserved results. Our fabulous swimmers broke six club records and gained 11 personal best times.

Arnold finished first with 218 points, followed by Hinckley 2nd with 216 points, Orion 3rd with 210 points, Leighton Buzzard 4th with 186 points, Mansfield 5th with 106 points, and Droitwich 6th achieving 103 points.

The next round is 11th November - so watch out for details of how we get on in our next update.

Notts ASA Stage 2 League September saw a strong performance by Arnold in Round 1 and this was followed up by another great performance from the squad in the October gala. The final gala in this league is in November and the Arnold team hope to maintain a solid performance.

Open Meets This Autumn has seen swimmers achieving impressive results at various open meets across the county.

The Falcon Open Meet on Sunday 24th September had 13 Swimmers competing achieving 35 personal best times and competing in 23 finals. A special congratulations to Max Davies for achieving a new club record. The other swimmers were Jak Bodycott, Katelynn Bodycott, Ben Cuthill, Morgan Green, Charlotte Hawkins, Emily Hawkins, Amber Kirk, Hannah Lowe, Eli Myers, Josh Rayns, Anna Shaw, Latrell Wynter.

At Roebook Open Meet Honey Baxendale, Kyran Cubit, Max Davies, Liam Dawson, Bethany Easton, Kyra MacDonald, Millie- Jo MacDonald, and Eleanor Watson between them achieved 27 personal best times.

And finally the Leicester Penguins Open saw 33 personal best achieved by Charlotte Hawkins, Emily Hawkins, Lily Jackson-Oates, Josh Rayns, Anna Shaw, Amaia Steele, and Joshua Tapsel.

Healthy Eating is for Life,

not just for Christmas

A

t this time of year, women en masse will start dieting to fit into that festive little black dress. Come January, the diet season resumes with fervour as we try to shift the weight gained from the Christmas excess.

Sound familiar?

The madness is that diets don’t work for most of us - 95% will re-gain the weight and more within a year. Diets invariably make the problem worse, and can often be hazardous to our health!

In fact diets are counter-productive; when we restrict calories, our bodies perceive starvation. This causes three responses: tiredness, so we conserve energy; hunger, so we prioritise food finding and slower metabolism, so we manage on fewer calories.

Psychologically, humans are hard-wired to resist restrictions. What is forbidden becomes more attractive and can lead to obsessing about food. Diets tend to be all or nothing. One slip-up and we see it as total failure, often triggering a binge. The yoyo cycle starts again.

To succeed, we need to see health and, as a result, looking and feeling good as the goal rather than weight loss. By making permanent, sustainable changes to eating and lifestyle, weight loss becomes inevitable.

Eating mindfully means being constantly aware of food choices. If we think about the impact of food on health, then we’re likely to make better choices.

Mindful eating gives us control. Rather than grabbing and consuming chocolate without thinking, consciously consider “it’s full of sugar, damaging to health and won’t help weight loss”. Then resist, or else enjoy it as a treat. There’s no failure, no diet derailment and therefore less likelihood of having an all-out binge. Move on with your motivation and confidence intact and make the next choice a healthy one.

Mindful eating takes considerable practice, but taking back control of eating and health means liberation, not deprivation.

Shortened life expectancy, ill health, weight gain and depression due to poor food choices is the real deprivation.

NEW YEAR...

NEW YOU A new year is fast approaching. Are you one of the many in January who pledge to becoming a “new you”? Is changing yourself for the better on the cards in 2018? Before you set any resolutions read on...Making positive health changes does not have to be as hard as you may think.

Walking 30 minutes a day in addition to your current daily activities can burn 200 - 300 extra calories per day. Do this five times a week and that’s an extra 1000 calories minimum burnt in just one week!

Benefits include body fat loss, improved circulation and reduced risk of heart disease.

When a “new you” is the goal, sometimes small, regular changes are best. These then become new healthy habits and before you know it you’re walking 10-20,000 steps a day without even thinking about it.

Why not give it a go?

All you need is a little space and a timer. That’s it!

• Static jog for 2 minutes (warm up) • Body weight squats for 30 seconds, rest for 10 seconds and repeat 6 times • High knees for 30 seconds, rest for 10 seconds and repeat 6 times • Star jumps for 30 seconds, rest for 10 seconds and repeat 6 times • Mountain climbers for 30 seconds, rest for 10 seconds and repeat 6 times • Press ups, 10 reps for 3 sets resting no longer than 30 seconds • Sit ups, 10-20 reps for 3 sets resting no longer than 30 seconds

Be patient. Small, realistic adjustments that you can maintain can make a massive difference. As can knowledge. If we knew how long it took to burn off the calories in the foods we eat, would we make more informed decisions about our diet?

When you consider a 42g bar of Dairy Milk (a Christmas staple!) is about 230 calories, it might take about five minutes to eat and a split second to make the decision, but the reality is, if you already consume over the number of calories you need, you would have to walk just over 30 minutes at a normal pace to burn off that 230 calorie bar of chocolate.

Here is a simple home work-out that requires no equipment, maybe a little googling and about 15-20 minutes of your time a day.

Sensational Bill’s

ill’s started with humble beginnings as a tiny grocery shop just off the high street. A few years later after moving to new premises it was hit by a flood in 2000! Not being deterred Bill’s opened again but this time with a café and became a bit of a sensation.

The restaurant itself has a modern, rustic feel with bunches of dried chilli’s hanging from the ceiling and shelves containing Bill’s jams and bottles of dressings for sale.

We were greeted by a very friendly waitress who really looked after us.

A great touch was when she brought the kids starter out with the drinks – a blessing when you have a very hungry child.

We chose wild mushroom soup £5.75, crumbed halloumi sticks £5.95, golden fried pork sesame dumplings £5.95 & dakkochi chicken skewers £6.50 to start. All delicious and very fresh.

For mains we had macaroni cheese £9.95 braised lamb shank £14.95 served with fresh mint, parsley and a red wine gravy, it fell off the bone and was devine, a 10oz sirloin steak £18.50 and a 14oz ribeye £21.95 both cooked to perfection and very tasty.

Then my favourite bit, for desserts we chose warm scones, our waitress

very kindly let us have them from the teatime menu £4.95, melting chocolate bombe £6.95 served with a hot caramel sauce which was poured over the bombe at the table to melt the top – great fun.

Warm chocolate brownie £5.95 and warm cinnamon doughnuts £5.95. All yummy and finished our meal off perfectly.

The kids menu is really good value at £6.95 for 3 courses and a drink, starting with crispy tortilla chips, Harry then chose little Bills hamburger , which was not little but he polished it off no problem, and ice cream for pudding.

All in all a great family meal and I will definitely be returning to try the chocolate bombe for myself!

Christmas Puddings Well, the festive season is upon us, time to stop worrying about the calories and instead indulge ourselves in the treats and sweets associated with Christmas. Around the world, where Christmas is celebrated, the holiday season is a time for traditional cakes, bakes and puddings. In France the “Bûche de Noël”, a classic chocolate covered Yule log cake is a Christmas centrepiece, in Germany “pfeffernüsse” cookies served from the 6th December, are covered in icing sugar and full of a mix of warm spices. “Struffoli” in Italy are little nuggets of fried dough with lemon zest served on Christmas Eve, and of course we are all now familiar with the traditional Pannettone. In Sweden, a classic rice pudding with cinnamon

is staple part of the festive menu, along with sweet gooey “lussekatter” buns.

Our own traditional Christmas Pudding is believed to date back to the 14th century when it was a porridge of beef and mutton with raisins, currants, prunes, wines and spices, over time it evolved into the plum pudding we know today, despite being banned in 1664 by the Puritans as a “bad custom”.

Even though it enjoys a long history, not everyone enjoys this rich fruit pudding, so here are few alternative ideas for festive treats, if you fancy a change this holiday. Have a lovely Christmas, the diet can start in January!

Christmas “Mess” Ingredients • 200g Greek yoghurt • 300ml double cream • 2tbsp lemon curd • 250g frozen mixed berries • 2tbsp cassis (optional) • 1 small pinch cinnamon • 4 individual meringues (use the good ones you get from delis/ farmshops or make your own) Method 1. In small saucepan gently heat the frozen berries, sugar and cinnamon until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, add cassis and set aside to cool.

2. Whip the double cream and yoghurt until it holds its shape, drizzle through the lemon curd.

3. Break up the meringues into a bowl then spoon over half the cream then half the berries and repeat. Serve straight away.

Satsumas in a Caramel Syrup Ingredients • 75g caster sugar • 40ml fresh orange juice • 6 whole, peeled satsumas, pith removed (to remove pith, dunk peeled satsuma for a few seconds in boiling water and allow to cool) Method 1. (Take extreme care when boiling sugar, do not overheat) Put the sugar and 75ml warm water into a pan. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves and then allow to bubble gently until you have a golden caramel. As soon as the sugar is starting to brown remove from heat and allow to cool a little. Add the juice (stand well back, it will spit! - I used a splatter guard), stir gently until smooth.

2. In a large bowl pour the syrup over the satsumas. Allow to cool, serve with a qood quality vanilla ice-cream.

Dutch Baby Oven Pancakes with roasted Plums Ingredients • 20g butter • 2 large eggs • 100ml single cream • 120ml milk • 100g plain flour • 30g golden caster sugar • Half tablespoon cinnamon Roast Plums • 3 plums • Juice of half an orange • 2 tablespoons golden caster sugar Method 1. Preheat oven to 200C, heat up a baking sheet 2. Halve, destone and slice plums into wedges, place in a roasting tin, squeeze over the juice and toss them in the sugar. Roast for 20 mins until soft.

3. To make the batter, whisk together the eggs, cream, milk and flour until smooth 4. Melt butter in the cast iron frying pans, and then divide and pour in the batter. Place in the oven on the baking sheet and cook for 20 mins until golden brown and puffed up.

5. Serve sprinkled with sugar, cinnamon and plums.

Prosecco: A Joy of Life!

There are many producers of sparkling, aromatic, prosecco wine. For this quest I searched for a company that produces a range of high quality prosecco wines, with impressive bottle presentations. Bottega has a very interesting history, both during the 20th century and into the 21st century. The eye-catching bottles and a great number of the wines are award-winning. The bottles are created by artisan crafts people and are really distinguishable. From their prosecco range I found the following to be very impressive.

Bottega Poeti Prosecco (DOC) is fresh, fragrant and has a floral bouquet. This wine is a very popular, dry production and favoured by many. Bottega Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore (DOCG) Extra Dry is another poets’ wine which is also very popular.

Having a brilliant straw-yellow colour, too, this fresh and fragrant wine graces many dining occasions, regularly. Bottega Prosecco (DOC) Biologico Extra Dry is often chosen and has many devotees. This organic production is, again, a brilliant straw-yellow colour. Very fine, fresh, fruity and delicate is how I would describe this, much sought-after, prosecco. Bottega Prosecco (DOC) Fundum I found to be a splendid dry production, that has plenty of fruits, to please. The mouthfeel and palate sensation is fresh, with a good finish. Gold Poeti Prosecco (DOC) is a further very classy production from Bottega.

Fresh, aromatic and very impressive, this wine comes in a magnificent gold-coloured bottle. Again, a fruity bouquet prevails, which leads, enticingly, to the wonderful mouthfeel.

The palate is treated to a sensation that is impressively pleasant and memorable. The glamour of the bottle presentation adds to the pleasures of this production, which is extremely popular for special occasions and also makes a really wonderful gift.

Prosecco wines, having a persistent and fine perlage, are perfect for apĂŠritifs and excellent to pair with starters, also fish, seafood and

Lucy: looking for love

Until earlier this year, Lucy and her siblings had contented lives with their owner. This all changed, however, when their owner sadly passed away – leaving the feline family homeless.

Thankfully, local charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit stepped in: taking in all four cats with its volunteer fosterers.

Of the four, Lucy is possibly the most overlooked with little interest so far in any home offers. As her fosterer explains: ‘Dear Lucy, once she’s given a chance and some patience, is really the most loving companion. She’s only about 6 years old; she so deserves a chance! A quiet home with older children, and as the only cat, would suit her perfectly.’

Mental Health Befriending and Support Group During September I was delighted to attend an event held at Arnold Methodist Church by the Mental Health Befriending and Support Group. I wanted to pass on details to all the readers of NG5 – to make sure everyone is aware of the fantastic work this group is doing in supporting those with mental health problems, their carers, families and friends.

The group meet every Friday at the Church by Arnold Market between 11am and 2pm. They have been established for over a year now and provide a friendly, safe place for sufferers and anyone involved with them to meet up informally. The group welcomes everyone, regardless of faith, and really does provide an excellent service.

I hope any residents of the area who think the group might be able to help will go along one Friday. I know you would be made very welcome.

We recently heard that the group has been nominated as one of six winners of Methodist Insurance’s Church Community Award 2017.

Gedling Granted £1 Million to Help Disabled Gedling Borough Council has been awarded nearly £1 million by Central Government to help improve the homes of disabled people in the borough.

Eligible residents can apply for up to £30,000 for improvements to help make their homes easier to live in. The grants can be awarded for a number of different improvements to properties from stair lifts for the elderly to sensory rooms for young children with learning difficulties.

The money was granted to Gedling Borough Council and Nottinghamshire County Council who are working together in partnership to identify needs and design adaptations for disabled people in the borough.

Some of the money has already begun to be used by residents in need of improvements.

Typical works include improving access to properties, installing suitable lighting, heating and ventilation or improving access and facilities within the property for cooking, sleeping and bathing. People can also apply for help improving the safety of the property.

To be eligible the service user must live in the borough, be an owner occupier, private tenant, a tenant in social housing or a landlord with a disabled tenant. The property owner’s permission is also required. Eligibility is based on financial circumstances and an assessment made by Nottinghamshire County Council.

To apply for this scheme, people should contact Nottinghamshire County Council on 0300 500 8080 and request an assessment for a Disabled Facilities Grant.

Residents in 118 communities have come together at a time when one in five Brits feel lonely and one in three blame technology for stopping them getting to know their neighbours.

Nextdoor’s aim is to provide a trusted forum for neighbours to work together to build stronger, safer, happier communities, a remedy for the 22% of people in the East Midlands who feel disconnected to the place they live and the 10% of people who can’t name their next door neighbour.

Nottingham residents are using Nextdoor to get to know each other and the private social network is being used to organise street parties, share local advice and recommendations for babysitters or gardeners, for neighbourhood watch efforts, to find lost pets and start community fitness clubs.

Designed to be simple for anyone to use – and boasting users aged between 18 all the way to 94 years old - the sign-up process is straightforward. To become a member of their Nextdoor neighbourhood, users just need to sign up with a valid email address and input their post code, at which point they’ll be able to see a map of their area, see updates and public posts, and connect with other members of their local community.
