Burntstump Seely C of E Academy Choir Perform at Arnold Carnival

Children from Burntstump Seely Church of England Academy performed to their biggest audience yet at the Arnold Carnival celebrations. Head Teacher and choir leader, Heather Gabb said that the choir, which was started in Autumn last year, is going from strength to strength. “We practise once a week and were honoured to perform at the Mansfield Music Festival in March. We were placed joint second in the unconducted class which was fantastic for a fairly new choir.” The children were well received by the Arnold Carnival-goers and Heather says the audience were very supportive of the children. The choir sang ‘I Turn on the Tap’ by Richard Stilgoe, which focuses on those suffering from drought conditions in Africa, and the second song ‘Baningati’, a joyful Cameroonian playground song. “Our final song,” says Heather, “‘Count on Me’ by Bruno Mars, was to show our commitment to our school values of Community, Hope, Respect, Confidence and Honesty.” Pupil Joni aged 8 said that it was a great opportunity to hone their performance skills. “I was really nervous at first, but then I enjoyed it. I think we sang the best that we can!”

Ernehale Junior School Footballers Retain Gedling Football Cup!

Ernehale Junior School in Arnold is celebrating the retention of the Gedling Primary Schools Football Association cup for the second year running. The boys have had an incredible run since the beginning of the 2016 season; with one draw in their league matches and winning all of the rest, they haven’t lost a single match! Team coaches Richard Younger (Next Level Sports) and Rebecca Bateman (Ernehale Junior School Teaching Assistant) said that the team were a credit to the school. Richard said, “I am still buzzing from the results. I was so proud of them for playing as well as they did and keeping their calm during the penalty shootout.” The final was played against Arno Vale Junior School and ended in a nail biting 2-1 penalty shootout. Teaching Assistant and coach Rebecca Bateman said she was nervous during the final. Rebecca said the team played a great game. “Well firstly, we did something that Leicester City didn’t do, we retained our title! I know that winning the title meant the world to every single child, and I was totally over the moon! The coaching and teaching staff all believed in the boys, and that faith definitely rubbed off.” The school are already running trials for their new football team as Rebecca says around half of the players will move to secondary schools in September. Rebecca describes their season as being ‘out of this world’. They were Team Ernehale until the end!”

Arnold Hill Students are Guest Speakers at National Conference

Students from Arnold Hill Academy were asked to speak at a national teaching conference about a pioneering literacy project the school is trialling. Six students and two teachers from Arnold Hill did a presentation to literacy experts and English teachers from around the country. The project, which the school developed in partnership with the National Literacy Trust, is exploring ways of teaching oracy and listening skills outside of regular English lessons. Following a teacher training session with the National Literacy Trust, Arnold Hill came up with the idea of developing pupils’ speaking skills through the study of British Values. Assistant Head at Arnold Hill, Emily Dalton, explained: “We timetabled an hour a week for Years 7 and 8 to work specifically on skills such as debating and arguing a point succinctly by exploring our country’s values. Topics have included democracy, fair representation through the media, being entrepreneurial, and pride in our home city. It’s making a huge difference to the students’ confidence in speaking.” Catharine Driver, Secondary Schools Adviser at the National Literacy Trust, said: “Arnold Hill has taken a bold and creative approach to developing its pupils’ speaking skills and confidence by engaging them with such a culturally diverse topic. We hope their project will be a source of inspiration for other schools around the UK.”

TRENT ACADEMIES EXPLORE UNI LANGUAGE OPTIONS AT 14

Three Nottingham schools have been trialling a new way of getting pupils as young as 14 and 15 hooked on studying languages through to A Level and University. Rushcliffe School, The Farnborough Academy and Arnold Hill Academy – which together make up The Trent Academies Group – have paired up with the University of Nottingham to give Year 10 students a flavour of what studying languages to degree level can offer them. The three academies took 60 of their aspiring linguists, currently in their first year of GCSEs, on a visit to the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies at the university. These types of visits do not usually happen until Year 12. The students were given taster sessions in Italian and Russian, a tour of campus, and they also heard first hand from undergraduates what it’s like to study languages at university and where that can take you in the future. 22-year-old Evie Ross, who has just completed her finals in Spanish and Portuguese, spoke to the students about her languages path; about how she was a beginner in Portuguese when she started university and about her year abroad working in Barcelona and then Brazil. Pupils from the three schools were impressed with what they heard. Elodie Cavill, from

Arnold Hill Academy, said “I learnt what a year abroad entails and that it is possible to add languages to most degrees.”

Vernon Coaker MP helps Killisick Junior School launch ‘Book Swap’

Killsick Junior School have launched a big ‘Book Swap’ as part of their drive to inspire a love of reading in pupils, and to share that interest with their families too. Kim Donzé, a teacher at the school said that pupils are already encouraged to read at least four times a week at home, collecting points for their good work. Now she says, the school wants to inspire the grown-ups to join in by donating and borrowing books from their new Book Swap project. Kim says she hopes it will encourage the pupils further. Hundreds of books have already been donated to the scheme, and one parent had her sights set on a detective novel. Sarah Greave said, “I think this is a really good idea and if we can encourage the children it’s worth it.” Sarah said her son Lewis needed to find out just what interested him before he started to devour books. At Killlisick Junior School a mini library of free to choose books are now available for adults and it is hoped that this will feed into their program to encourage pupils to read more. Kim said the school is thrilled with the generous donations from families. “Even the bookcases were donated and teachers have been sneaking into the Book Swap and using it before it even opened which is great!” To mark the grand opening event, Vernon Coaker MP came into school assembly and talked to children about the importance of reading. Mr Coaker MP said he was an avid reader in his youth, and as an adult couldn’t get by without the development of such a crucial skill.

Rain holds off for Guides’ ‘Night in a Box’

Guides from Gedling joined some 100 members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire in May in sleeping out under cardboard to highlight the plight of the homeless. Aged from 10 upwards, the girls began to arrive at Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s Elton campsite from 7pm, all armed with a cardboard box which would be their only shelter for the night. After queuing for a simple supper from the soup kitchen, they then warmed up during a campfire singalong before bedding down in their boxes. Despite the gloomy forecast, the rain held off for most of the night and the Guides rose early on Saturday morning – still smiling! All the girls had been sponsored to take part in the sleep-out and the money raised will be donated to Framework, the Nottinghambased homelessness charity. Talking afterwards, the Guides acknowledged their heightened appreciation of some of the issues associated with homelessness. ‘It was hard to sleep, noisy and cold,’ reflected Hannah Oxley (11) of 1st Gedling Guides, whilst her friend Ellie Stark (11) was surprised to find that it was ‘…quite comfy actually!’ Girlguiding Nottinghamshire is recruiting additional adult volunteers in order to whittle down the waiting lists and create more events and opportunities like the Night in a Box for girls and young women all over the county. Anyone interested in finding out what’s involved is invited to call 0115 987 7220 or visit www.girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

For the budding skier or snowboarder they offer lessons on a nursery slope, and for those with a little bit more experience they have the main ski run of over 160 metres. You can book lessons or open sessions whatever suits you.

The Alpine Lodge & Bar overlooks the slopes and offers hot and cold food as well as beverages for those apres ski moments, or you can relax in the new coffee lounge which overlooks the nursery slope.

I don’t know about you but ever since I watched ‘Cool Runnings’ I have wanted to try a Toboggan run. Well Swadlincotes Cresta Run didn’t disappoint with 500 metres of exciting twists, tunnels and turns. Age restrictions apply, 4-7 year olds must ride with an adult and 8+ years must ride on their own. The Sno-tubes are so much fun, they are large inflatable rings which can be spun and linked together to slide down a section of the slopes. (Min age 4 years.)

Not too bad to say it started its life as an old spoil heap left over from the highly productive coal mining days and was transformed by John Nike who’s estate also owns many other ski centres in the UK. For more information on age restrictions please visit: www.jnlswadlincote.co.uk Tel: 01283 217200 Mon-Fri 11am – 9pm Sat-Sun 10am – 6pm

olcino has brought Gelato joy Nottingham.

to

Based at Beastmarket Hill, the two-floor establishment serves authentic, artisan gelato, freshly made in store. Gelato being seriously flavoursome Italian Ice Cream. It is being run by gelato experts Francesco Arcadio, and his wife Kirsten, assisted by son Sebastian. The Arcadio family has an impressive history of making gelato and operating café bars dating back to 1950s in Italy. The Nottingham venture is hot on the heels of their first highly successful UK business in Loughborough. Diners can expect traditional flavours such as Cassata Siciliana (a traditional sweet from all areas of Sicily) and Pinolata (a lemon and chocolate Sicilian pastry). But Dolcino has also produced exciting new gelato flavours, including Twist on a Twix, Chilli Chocolate and Salted Caramel, and Hazelnut and Avocado. Customers who want to experiment with their own gelato mix, can ask the Dolcino experts to blend their choice of flavours to create something bespoke and brand new. There is a viewing window on the first floor where customers can see gelato freshly made every day. Dolcino has brought the Freakcone to Nottingham. Mouth-tinkling flavours, such as Black Forest Gateau, Toffee Popcorn, Mars Bar Magic, or any other combination the customer asks for – are served oozing over a gelato cone. There is also a premium selection of crepes, waffles and focaccia olive-oil bread sandwiches, all hand-made in store. Locally sourced ingredients are used where possible and own blends of coffee roasted on site.

We chose waffles and crepes. Lovely big portions, juicy fillings and to die for gelato. We had the beautiful flavours of cherry bakewell, raspberry and caramel. Our most favourite however was pistachio. Yum! The Dolcino experience is also enhanced by an Italian retro feel, with cosy booths, funky pictures of Italy, an iconic Vespa scooter and Fiat 500 wallpiece. A lot of the establishment’s equipment, including the gelato counter, a state-ofthe-art gelato making machine and the coffee roaster, has been shipped in from Italy. The upstairs is a perfect area for meetings and events. Dolcino is open seven days a week, morning to evening. It hopes to become the perfect place for an extra treat during a night out in Nottingham. Dolcino.. where every day is a sundae!!

Summer Desserts Summer is here and hopefully the sun is out, the gardens and parks look lovely and barbecuing and al fresco eating is in full flow. Summer brings a bounty of fresh fruits, herbs and salads with which to create delicious dishes. The smell of basil evokes memories for me of eating out in Italy. If you have some in your garden, how about making an easy basil pesto? – you can freeze it in ice-cubes and use it all year round. If you have a pot of chives on your patio, snip them over a salad for a subtle onion flavour. The market stalls and supermarket shelves are groaning with berries this time of year, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries - a large bowl of berries sprinkled with caster sugar and a dollop of whipped cream makes a perfect, simple dessert. Aubergines and courgettes can be sliced, drizzled with olive oil and sea salt and grilled on the barbecue. Tomatoes, radishes, sliced cucumber and spring onions are perfect for nibbling on while the meat or fish cooks on the barbecue, and salad leaves are in abundance. Dress with a little salt and pepper, olive oil and white wine vinegar for a simple side. On long sunny days, no one wants to be standing over a hot stove making puddings but we all still enjoy our desserts. So here are a few very easy to make “no cook” desserts that will impress your family and friends, take hardly any time to prepare, and make the most of the summer

Iced Raspberry Brûlées with Basil

Grilled Peaches with Vanilla Ice Cream

Strawberry Cheesecake Bites

Ingredients (serves 4-6) 225g raspberries (or you could use chopped strawberries) 50g golden caster sugar 142ml double cream 100ml custard Handful of finely shredded basil leaves 3 tbsp icing sugar

Ingredients 4 ripe peaches or nectarines, halved and stoned Rapeseed or vegetable oil Best quality vanilla ice cream Honey and sea salt to serve

Ingredients Strawberries Cream cheese Icing sugar Vanilla extract Crushed digestive biscuits (to almost a powder)

Method Divide the raspberries between 4 heat-proof ramekins, scatter over the sugar and press down the fruit slightly. Whip the cream until it holds its shape and then fold in the custard and basil. Spoon the mixture evenly over the raspberries and smooth the tops over. Put the ramekins in the freezer for about half an hour to set. Dust each ramekin with the icing sugar and then, using a blow-torch (or a very hot grill) caramelise the sugar and leave to harden for 1 minute. Serve immediately.

Method Heat the griddle to a medium high heat. Brush the cut surface of the peaches with a little oil and place down on the griddle for a few minutes and then rotate (to get the characteristic grill marks), push down gently for a further 3 or 4 minutes until the fruit starts to caramelise. Remove from the grill and serve with a scoop of good vanilla ice cream, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with sea salt.

Method Remove the hulls and hollow out the middle of the strawberry (you will probably need a paring knife for this). Thoroughly combine the cream cheese, icing sugar and vanilla in a bowl. Fill each strawberry with the cream cheese filling (a piping bag is best) and then dip the cheesecake side of the strawberry into the digestive biscuit crumb. What could be easier!

Everyone thinks about chimney sweeping for Christmas, but for the majority of people the best time of year to get your chimney or liner swept is in the summer when you’ve finished burning. This cleans the flue of all soot and deposits that would otherwise sit there for months rotting the brickwork or liner before you fire it up again. A Hill In Arnold by Bob Massey

In the 1870’s Charles Grey Hill was a lace manufacturer with premises at Commerce Square on High Pavement in Nottingham. Charles was born on 27th May, 1832 to John and Susannah Hill in the then village of Lenton. He was the middle of three brothers. His younger brother George died in 1839 at the age of just six. His elder brother John, born in 1824, pre deceased him, dying in 1893. Unfortunately for the boys, their parents separated. Their father emigrated to New Zealand where he died in 1893, the same year as his oldest son. Charles’ mother moved to Basford where she died in 1891.

One of the reasons for buying the Arnot Hill estate was to expand his gardens and particularly his greenhouse plants. The new estate allowed him more space for his growing hobby. Charles’ move from Villa Road transformed the Arnot Hill estate in a short time. He built new and larger greenhouses for his plants. The one for the orchids was 146’ long divided into 6 compartments with a 7’ wide corridor at one side. This corridor formed a promenade which allowed the visitor to move from one area to the other without passing outside. This was a new invention designed by Charles Hill.

Charles was fortunate to attend grammar school. After leaving school he was apprenticed to the lace company of Duplex Potter & Co. Here he met fellow apprentice John Wightman who, several years later, joined Charles in forming the firm of C.G Hill and Company. The two partners both took up residence on Villa Road in Nottingham. C.G Hill and Company manufactured hats, caps, bonnets, ladies cap fronts, coverings for the head, head dresses and ornaments. Charles was like many gentlemen of his time, very active in local affairs, serving on the local council. He took on the post of Sheriff of Nottingham in 1867-68. The business thrived and both men became wealthy. This enabled Charles Hill to indulge his passion for orchids which are expensive to buy and difficult to grow. C.G Hill bought Arnot Hill House and estate in August 1877 and put his old house on Villa Road in Nottingham up for sale. His passion in life was horticulture and orchids in particular. His house at Villa Road had a 42’ by 11’ greenhouse, 40’ by 14’ geranium house, an orchid house and a fernery all of which were fitted with the latest in heating and venting systems.

As well as building greenhouses for his plants, Charles built a new carriageway from the present lodge house and on to another lodge house that used to stand on the Arnot Hill Road entrance. He laid out the gardens with banks of shrubs lining the carriageway. The grounds now had graceful walks, fine sweeps of grass without these being cut up into flower beds. Shrubberies were tastefully arranged and planted with the addition of choice conifers and other ornamental trees. These were obtained from various parts of the world. The whole of the grounds were transformed into one large pleasure garden with fine walks, wide open spaces and tree lined areas. Much of what we see in Arnot Hill Park today was started by the work of C G Hill.

I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

Woman: r e d n o W s iew Bur ton Rev Gal Power The DC Extended Universe has had a rocky road since its inception, with no movie yet released (Man of Steel, Batman Vs Superman, Suicide Squad) being given really positive reviews by critics. But while Batman Vs Superman was mercilessly beaten by the internet, it was praised for the DCEU’s interpretation of the badass woman from paradise – Wonder Woman. So surely it would make sense to put such a well received character into their own standalone adventure...right? The story of Wonder Woman shows us the origins of the shield and sword wielding goddess. Here we get to see her humble origins as the princess of a mythical island of warrior women, that has been hidden to the world by the daddy of all Greek gods, Zeus. Well that was until a German warship following an escaping spy happened to stumble onto the hidden paradise of Themyscira. Wonder Woman, or Diana, saves the spy and learns of the terrible war raging across the rest of the world, the war to end all wars, or as we know it now, World War 1. Compelled by her innate goodness and an immeasurable amount of courage, Diana leaves her paradise of a home to help the world of man and stop the war by killing Ares, the god of war. It’s a one woman against the world story. Well one woman with super human strength, indestructible gauntlets, a helpful shield and god-killing sword, against the world. Think we’re in safe hands. Gal Gadot is incredible as Wonder Woman. In this film she gets to explore a younger, more naïve Diana, one who is bristling with hope for a world ruled by peace and love and just so happens to be a superpowered tank of a woman. Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, the spy saved by Diana, was the perfect choice for this role, and is an actor to watch out for. Patty Jenkins not only continues to uphold the grainy and palpable house style of the DCEU movies that was created and perfected from Man of Steel through to BVS, but she also finds ways to make World War 1, a period of history that has been depicted on film many times before, look fresh and hauntingly beautiful.

Seeing Wonder Woman walk through the trenches, we were left in no doubt about how dire and desperate the situation was out there. When she finally suits up and enters no man’s land, her bright costume juxtaposing against the bleak, war torn land she is wading through, we get a real sense of sadness at how a once beautiful land has been destroyed. There is also hope, through Wonder Woman, that this world can be saved, nurtured and allowed to breathe again. Overall Wonder Woman isn’t a mind-blowing, runaway success that everyone should run out and see, but it is a solidly entertaining superhero film that looks incredible, has a charismatic and almost perfectly casted set of characters, and shines a light on a whole new and interesting female lead for the DCEU.

Wonder Woman = 7/10 © Sam Burton (aged 20)

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... Tackling antisocial behaviour Nottinghamshire Police recognises that antisocial behaviour is an important issue to individuals and communities. The impact of persistent nuisance or harassment can be worse than that of a single crime as due to the wider impact on a victim’s life, their health, mental and emotional wellbeing can suffer.

What are we doing? We actively work with local authorities to tackle and reduce antisocial behaviour, which can include anything from rowdy and noisy behaviour to street drinking and selling drugs on the street to vandalism, graffiti and flytipping. Through our neighbourhood teams we take a number of measures to understand and respond to local concerns by attending local meetings and engaging with community groups, and sharing the work that we do via Nottinghamshire Alert and our various social media platforms.

We have a range of powers that enable us to tackle antisocial behaviour including advice and warnings, escalating to antisocial behaviour orders, criminal sanctions and penalty notices for more serious incidents.

How to report antisocial behaviour • In an emergency: call 999 only if life is at risk or a crime is in progress. If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, you can also text 999 with an emergency, but you have to register your phone beforehand by texting ‘register’ to 999 • In any other situation: call 101. This non-emergency number is the ideal way to report ongoing problems of antisocial behaviour • Call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111

ARNOLD TOWN FC Latest News..

Under New Management

Tips on how to avoid and deal with wasp and bee stings A significant number of people get stung by wasps and bees. In certain cases, these stings can lead to anaphylactic shock, which can be potentially fatal. Ray from Confirm a Kill Pest Control recommends ways to avoid stings and how to deal with them.

1) Remain Calm Arnold Town FC start the new season under new management with the arrival of Tom Richardson and assistant Chris Galley taking charge following Dave Marlow’s move over to Eastwood CFC. Tom and Chris arrive from Real United and bring with them former Doncaster Rovers player Tristram Whitman. Tris, a former Arnold player, signed for Doncaster from Arnold in 2000 and now finds himself back with the Eagles in a player/coaching roll. Keep up to date with news etc. on various platforms by searching Arnold Town FC: Twitter https://twitter.com/TheOfficialATFC Pitchero h t t p : / / w w w. p i t c h e r o . c o m / c l u b s / arnoldtownfc/ Facebook h t t p s : / / w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / ArnoldTownFC/

All images provided by official club photographer Mick Gretton

People often wave their arms and move rapidly, this can cause the insect to become increasingly distressed, increasing the chance of a sting. Move away slowly if you encounter wasps or bees and do not swat them.

2) Buy repellent and avoid strong perfumes / deodorants Purchase an insect repellent with at least 50% DEET (diethyltoluamide) to effectively work. Spray this on uncovered skin.

3) Getting Stung

Clean the sting using soap and water. Keep a cold compress on the affected area for 10 minutes and elevate if possible. Antiseptic cream can be applied to provide soothing relief. Avoid home remedies such as bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. They have no effect.

4) Dealing with stings

NHS Choices website is a great site to visit for information on stings, it recommends you: • Call 111 for facial stings • Call 999 for anaphylactic shocks. • Call a professional pest control company to deal with wasp/bee nests.

Do not attempt removal yourself Confirm a Kill Pest Control have the correct equipment to deal with them safely minimising the risks of you being painfully stung or worse having a serious allergic reaction.

A LITTLE BIT OCD? I’m on a one-woman crusade! What I really want is to make people think before they use the phrase “I’m a bit OCD like that” or “that’s totally my OCD side coming out”, meaning that they like tidiness and order. Many people like to be in neat tidy surroundings and find neatness and symmetry pleasing but that doesn’t mean that they have OCD. Nor would they wish to because as any sufferer of OCD can tell you, it is a recipe for a miserable and severely limited life. OCD stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and, as the name suggests, has two main components - the obsession side and then the corresponding compulsive behaviour side. It comes in a number of forms, mainly: • Checking – whether taps are off, doors are locked, etc. • Fears of germs and contamination. • Intrusive thoughts of a distressing nature. • Symmetry and order. When people think of OCD, they generally think of the sufferer with their cans and jars all neatly arranged in the cupboard, labels facing outward. But that is only the most visible symptom of the disorder. What gets completely missed are the distressing obsessive thoughts that cause the sufferer to spend hours and hours of their lives making their surroundings “just so” and the dire results they believe their failure to do so will cause. Most people will have had the experience of being just about ready to leave the house and then having to run back just to make sure they’ve unplugged the iron or switched the cooker off. They run

back, check all is ok and then continue with their daily business without giving it another thought. The person who suffers from checking OCD is unable to do that. Instead they are locked in a cycle of checking and rechecking, never able to trust their own judgement until the “ritual” has been performed to their satisfaction, restarting that ritual from the very beginning if it goes a fraction off-plan, often having a serious impact on their lives as a result. And the imagined result of their “failure” to check even worse – the death or destruction of their loved ones, of their home. One would hope that most people wash their hands after using a public toilet but imagine being so afraid of germs and contamination that even after you have washed your hands, they still don’t feel clean and already you can picture the germs swarming and multiplying on your skin and you believe the end result of your “unclean” hands will be that your family will get contaminated from the germs you brought home and will get sick and die. And that ultimately it just works out easier if you just avoid going out in the first place so that you are never in the situation where you need to use a public toilet or come into contact with germs left behind by others. These are just a few examples of the true distress that comes from suffering from an OCD illness – however, help is available if you feel your life is being ruined with such distressing and intrusive thoughts. Cognitive Behavioural Theory (CBT) has been proven to help sufferers retrain their thoughts away from such distressing compulsive thoughts. If this is you, why not give me a call and see if I can help?

Marie Scott is a CBT therapist and psychotherapist, based at Maple House Clinic in Eastwood, NG16 3BD. She deals with issues such as anxiety, depression, stress and anger amongst many others. S Q U AT. KEY POINTS FOR A BETTER BACK SQUAT

Squat: you have all heard this term by now and the fact that injuries and mobility permitted, this exercise should be one of your main go to movements for multiple reasons.

Explaining the position

In this article, we will cover a few reasons why you should squat, and some technical points for improving your movement pattern. Why should I squat? Squatting is one of the key compound movements within exercise. It is a multiple joint, posture related movement, one of the first you perform as a child. If you watch a child from an early age their movement when performing a squat is natural, and pretty much perfect. This is because they have not yet had the factors of life that adults must manage with posture related issues.

1. Ideal position

The back squat is one of the most commonly, poorly performed exercises you will see in gyms.

2. Above parallel (not deep enough)

Why do people get it wrong? There are two main reasons this exercise is performed wrongly; first being the individual’s mobility. This is a key point we are going to address shortly. The other is social media. So many people now follow so called fitness professionals and take misguided information into their own training. You DO NOT need to reinvent the wheel on a basic but structured movement. If you already struggle with movement then forget pulse, paused and all the other BOOTY growing nonsense you are reading. Perfect the form of the basic movement, unweighted if you have to, before moving on to more complex squat methods.

3. Parallel (safe depth for knees)

Mobility How many times have you seen someone squatting but they have not warmed up the movement pattern before they add load on to their back? I am guessing a lot. A good squat needs a little attention before you even lift the bar. Are your hips mobile and warm? Is there any quad and hamstring tightness? Are there any joint issue or strains? Is your foot wear and positioning correct? There are many things to consider when it comes to performing this great exercise, to get the maximum benefit. Please reconsider your preparation.

Practise performing these movements. A great way to improve squat positioning is to: • Face a wall • Squat a few inches away, if your knees touch first, you are quad loading, try sitting back more • If your nose touches the wall first you are hip extending too soon, add a little knee hinge in at the same time • If clearance is good, focus on keeping as upright as you can by getting as close to the wall as you can, AND yes, it is possible to squat with your toes against the wall all the way to your bottom range. Happy Lifting! Kind regards The Strength and Physique Team

SMILE! Inspire wins Arts Council Support Inspire has received funding through Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts Libraries Fund to develop an exciting and innovative musical project in Nottinghamshire and Nottingham City libraries for children aged 3 – 5 and their families. In collaboration with MishMash Productions the project will create a brand new musical performance based on the popular children’s picture book Augustus and His Smile, written and illustrated by Catherine Rayner and published by Little Tiger Press, www. littletiger.co.uk. Titled Smile, the performance will convey the enchanting story of Augustus’s search for his smile through magical theatrical chamber music. Smile will be a musical adventure to delight young audiences across the county. Inspire who now deliver culture, learning and libraries on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council, aim to attract new audiences to libraries and to introduce children at an early age to high quality musical experiences. Elaine Dykes, Service Manager – Literacy and Reading, Nottingham Library Service, “This is an exciting partnership which will deliver an innovative musical experience to very young children in library settings. The programme is an excellent addition to our offer - Creating Better Futures – which we believe will bring classical music to new audiences”. Performances will tour libraries in Nottinghamshire and Nottingham City in October. Further details about the performance will be announced soon, on the Inspire website and via social media.

Gedling Country Park Visitors Centre Opens

Guides Help Runners ‘Race for Life’

On 12 June the new Gedling Country Park Visitor Centre was opened. Key stakeholders including the Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke, the builders G F Tomlinson and architect Allan Joyce Architects al attended the event. The visitor centre has a modern café and outdoor seating area looking over the park’s spectacular views of the borough. The building which is made up of 9,800 breeze blocks and 2,500 bricks took 35 weeks to build and cost £1.5 million.

Runners in Nottingham’s ‘Race for Life’ on Sunday 4 June were heartened to be greeted by members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire as they crossed the finish line on Victoria Embankment.

The centre will seat 75 people with 50 more spaces in the outdoor seating area. Café 1899 is named after the year the former colliery opened and will be managed by Nottingham City Council and will serve hot and cold refreshments along with a fully licensed bar. Food on the menu includes ‘Snap Tin’ sandwiches, Gedling Pasties and a range of daily specials and breakfasts.

Guides and Leaders from 1st Woodthorpe were positioned in the ‘finish funnels’ for both the 5km and 10km races, handing out water and medals to runners as they made it home.

Plans are also in place to incorporate the rich mining heritage inside the café which could include murals, photos, videos and information points about the history of the colliery and the future of the park.

Girlguiding Nottinghamshire is recruiting additional adult volunteers to enable more girls to support community events like Race for Life. Anyone interested is invited to call 0115 987 7220 or visit www.girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

92

It was a long day for the volunteers as well as the participants, with thousands of runners taking part.

Vaccination of Pets The vaccination of our pets greatly improves their health and longevity.

ideal time to check that your pets worming and flea control is up to date.

Over the last few decades one of the major improvements to the healthcare of our pets has been the development and use of effective vaccines against a variety of serious and life threatening illnesses.

Unfortunately recently vaccination in people and animals has had a bad press. However the modern vaccines used are carefully tested and licensed to ensure they are safe to use. If you have any concerns your vet will be happy to discuss them with you.

Some horrible diseases like Feline Enteritis and Canine Distemper are now thankfully extremely rare. Others such as Cat Flu and Canine Parvovirus are mainly seen in unvaccinated animals. Outbreaks of contagious illness such as Canine Kennel Cough and Myxomatosis in rabbits can be limited by vaccination. Generally your dog, cat, rabbit or ferret requires an initial primary course of inoculations as a youngster and then an annual booster to maintain it’s protection. As your pet gets older it’s immune system is less efficient and it is more important to keep him or her vaccinated. It is especially important in a breeding female to have them fully vaccinated so as to pass on that immunity to their newborn. Importantly alongside his annual booster your pet will also get a thorough health check which is a time when any other problems, such as early heart or dental disease, can be picked up and treated. It is also an

In these times of potential hardship, owners are often tempted to not vaccinate their pets or let their boosters lapse but this can be a false economy and potentially life threatening to your beloved pet. To help clients with this many practices have schemes to help you spread out the cost of routine health care such as our Pet Health Club, which gives you the option to pay a monthly direct debit to cover the costs of routine health care such as vaccination, flea and worm control. To find out more check with your practice or check their web site for details. © Andrew Draper, Senior Vet, Oak House Veterinary Centre

pets Timmy asks ‘Will you give me my forever home?

Timmy is hoping readers can help him find a home. Rescued by Animal Accident Rescue Unit, he has been waiting a while – could that home be with you? Here he explains: ‘Hello, I’m about 3-4 years old, and a lazy and lovable boy! I enjoy playing a bit but then I want to relax. I’m friendly, enjoy fuss and adore my food. My fosterers are trying to get me used to grooming …. I’m unsure about this brush thingy but it’s nice around my head. So if you’d like a laid back cat who’s fully house trained, well behaved and exceptionally cute, I could be your perfect match!’ Timmy was FIV/FeLV-tested and is negative; he is neutered, flea and worm treated, microchipped and vaccinated; his new owner is responsible for further vaccinations. For details, contact the Adoption Officer at admin@aaru. org.uk, who will reply as soon as possible. All adoptions need a successful homecheck. The charity does not rehome cats on or near busy roads unless indoor-only, and recommends keeping them indoors at night, and for 6-8 weeks to bond with the new owner/home. To raise funds for cats like Timmy, the charity’s next monthly fair is 2-4pm, Saturday 19 August at Lowdham Village Hall, Main Street, Lowdham NG14 7BD. The charity does not cover healthy strays/ unwanted pets, but helps neglected, injured and vulnerable animals and birds. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115 932 1555. For all animals needing homes, see www.animalaccident.org.uk.

Dogs Trust Celebrates the Launch of Their New Nottingham Dog School Dogs Trust, the leading UK dog welfare charity, has launched a new dog school offering training classes and individual lessons to Nottinghamshire pet parents. The new school is part of a significant expansion program following a successful year for 13 pilot schools across the UK. The Nottingham team, led by Head Coach Chelsea Martin, aim to offer a fun, stimulating and informative environment for dogs to learn household manners, whilst working to identify and prevent unwanted behaviours. Of the launch, Head Coach Chelsea Martin said, “I’m extremely excited about the opportunity we have to make a real difference to the lives of dogs and pet owners. By preventing problem behaviours in the dogs we see and training for the real-world we’re hopefully able to keep more dogs with their families.” Initially, classes will be offered in Sneinton, Lenton and Thurgarton with plans to add an additional two venues in or around the city. Every class consists of five 50-minute sessions, taught on five consecutive weeks. To ensure education is affordable to all, courses are priced at £50 each with a £10 discount for rescue dogs. By offering a variety of puppy, adult and rescue dog training classes, Dogs Trust hope to prevent problem behaviours and reduce the number of dogs given up for rehoming. To achieve this, the Nottinghamshire Dog School team will: • Utilise science-based, positive reinforcement training methods in all classes • Offer affordable seminars, workshops and other events to local dog owners • Provide CPD accredited events to veterinary staff in the area

Giving good vision and hearing in the community a helping hand The team at Specsavers in Arnold has been part of the community for more than 30 years, and is putting hearing and eye tests into focus as they show locals the importance of taking a holistic approach to health. Holistic health check

When this happens, you don’t simply go deaf but it becomes more and more difficult to understand sounds clearly, particularly speech, and that can be even trickier if there is background sound.

champions of eye and ear health,’ says Claire. ‘We view education as an important factor in improving the quality of life of our customers.’

‘In social environments such as a pub or restaurant it can be much harder to hear what people are saying and this can become extremely frustrating as it can sound as though people are mumbling,’ explains Claire.

Alongside answering any queries and handing out goodie bags, the team will also be holding a raffle for a £250 voucher off hearing aids, with all proceeds going to Action on Hearing Loss, and a draw to win a free pair of single vision polarised designer glasses up to the value of £149, with proceeds donated to Dementia Friends.

It’s a common misconception that eye tests are simply a prescription check. A recent YouGov poll showed that 54% of people in the East Midlands avoiding the opticians are doing so because they think that their eyes either have nothing wrong with them, or their prescription hasn’t changed so there is no need to visit. However, regular eye testing is not just a prescription check; it’s also an important part of any healthcare routine: ‘An eye test is a holistic health test and can help detect not only vision issues but also high blood pressure, high cholesterol, tumours, strokes, diabetes, autoimmune disorders and even multiple sclerosis,’ explains Arnold store director Claire Fletcher. ‘It is important to regularly attend every two years to ensure any sight issues or health conditions are detected early.’ While it’s important to keep up to date with changes in prescription, as we age our eyes also experience a decline – just as the rest of our body does. This makes them much more susceptible to several age-related diseases, including glaucoma, cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). An eye test can monitor any symptoms or conditions which can affect vision, and ensure that any problems are quickly picked up and referred to a specialist. ‘It’s worrying that 28% of people in the East Midlands area haven’t had an eye test in more than two years – we would recommend that everyone from the age of three has an eye test every two years and would like to encourage locals to book in with our friendly team in Arnold.’

Supporting hearing loss One in six adults in the UK experience some degree of hearing loss. For most people, hearing begins to deteriorate from the midthirties. It usually develops slowly over time and because of this you may not realise that it is getting worse. This is because the small, sensitive hair-like cells within the inner ear get worn out over the years.

‘Many people whose hearing has deteriorated in this way complain that they can hear but that they cannot hear clearly and often find themselves excluded from social conversations. Some may even begin to avoid groups or situations that in the past they have enjoyed. But there is no need to suffer in silence!’ Modern digital hearing aids are designed to identify and amplify speech sounds while suppressing background noise. With the right advice, practise and prescription most people find they can hear well again in most (if not all) situations. And as modern hearing aids work with residual hearing, the sooner action is taken, the better the results will be. ‘If you’re not sure whether you have a hearing problem, we can carry out a three-minute hearing check in store as a quick and easy way to find out,’ says Claire. ‘It’s free and you don’t need an appointment. If our audiologist thinks you would benefit from a full hearing test, that’s free too and you’ll be able to book an appointment for a time that suits you.’

A community effort For the team at Arnold, it’s important to ensure that this healthcare advice is passed on to the local community: ‘We are very proud to be an active member of the local community and

As such, the team will be taking part in the Arnold carnival on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 June. Locals can spot the Specsavers ‘Big Ear’ out and about in the town, as well as visit members of the highly-qualified audiology and optical teams offering advice at the Arnold Specsavers stall.

‘We’d love to answer any questions you might have and talk about making your eye and ear health better for you,’ says Claire. ‘Just look out for our Specsavers Arnold banner to come and see what we have on offer!’ To find out more about the free talks, or to book an eye examination or hearing test, please contact your local store: Hucknall: 56 High Street, NG15 7AX, 01159 889 050, www.specsavers.co.uk/stores/hucknall Nottingham: 20 - 24 Wheelergate, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, NG1 2ND, 0115 958 8361, www.specsavers.co.uk/stores/nottingham Arnold: 37 Front Street, NG5 7EA, 0115 967 0856, www.specsavers.co.uk/stores/arnold Beeston: 4 The Square, Chilwell Road, NG9 1EF, 0115 951 8980, www.specsavers.co.uk/stores/beeston Bingham: 13 Eaton Place, Bingham, NG13 8BD, 01949 837808, www.specsavers.co.uk/stores/bingham Eastwood: 99 Nottingham Road, Eastwood, NG16 3AJ Ilkeston: 104 Bath Street, DE7 8FE, 0115 944 1401, www.specsavers.co.uk/stores/ilkeston Long Eaton: 4-6 High Street, NG10 1LN, 01159 460450, www.specsavers.co.uk/stores/longeaton West Bridgford: 25-27 Central Avenue, NG2 5GQ, 01159 694830, www.specsavers.co.uk/stores/westbridgford

TAROSCOPES Air signs- Libra, Aquarius, Gemini (Seven of Coins, Page of Swords, Knight of Cups)

A new attitude will get you past this plateau. Up to now you’ve been a cynical, wry observer of a situation which is causing an issue. You’ve not wanted to get stuck in, and have remained on the sidelines, detached and cool. But, unfortunately, things won’t change till you jump in. Do so with as much positivity as you can muster: make the job a game, make the task fun. A spoonful of sugar will help this medicine go down.

Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius (Three of Coins, Page of Cups, Four of Swords)

Taking a time out will actually move you further faster. Sometimes we can only go so far on our own, using our willpower and talents to propel us forwards. Now is a time to actually take a break, a time out from the fray. Do something silly and fun. Let your imagination take you on a playful adventure. And, you know what, it’s in this reverie that you’ll find crystal clarity about your next move.

Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus (Five of Swords, King of Wands, Nine of Wands)

This is the last stretch of a tough time; you’ve got this! You face one last test in an area of life you’re already wearied by. Ongoing conflict has led you to believe this might lead to a hollow victory and you’re not wrong, so draw things to a conclusion swiftly and forget about who’s right or wrong. Be bold and take a risk to shut this sitch down. Enough’s enough.

Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio

(Eight of Cups, Ten of Wands, Death) Leave behind something which has drained you; it’s time for a change. You’ve taken on heavy burdens and carried them for a long time and, deep inside, you’re yearning to change course and move forwards lighter and brighter. You can! Follow this yearning, even if it means leaving something behind. A real, significant change is achievable by putting things down which have become too heavy.
