It is officially summer! This is a great opportunity to get hours and finish up your hours before the school year starts!
Seniors! To get a cord, you must be in Key Club senior year, and have 100 hours by senior year, or 200 all year combined. Even though you completed 200 all years, you still need 50 hours in your senior year

IMPORTANCE IN VOLUNTEERING IMPORTANCE IN VOLUNTEERING
By: Kayla
Do
“Solar Eclipse” by ‘Kayla’ on Spotify is a playlist I made to play on my speaker during my first event on the board. Pictures from volunteer events have made their way into my Instagram highlights. A lantern from Light the Night, a paper fan from Heart Walk, and medals from marathons hang from the ceiling, adorning my bedroom walls and commemorating each event I’ve attended. Key Club has subtly blended into my life, creating an impact that I’ve only recently started to notice. Volunteering, a major cornerstone for community building, personal growth, and societal advancement, has unexpectedly transformed my life for the better We tend to overlook the graduation volunteer requirements North Garland High School puts on us, thinking more about the time we’d put in rather than the process and outcome of it Initially, the thought of completing 100 hours seemed tiring. Maybe requiring 100 hours is 100 long hours, or maybe it’s 100 people, 100 events, and 100 impacts. 100 people you’ve interacted with over the years of high school, through 100 events, creating 100 impacts on their lives. By the time you’ve finished, you might not remember where you started, only where you’ve ended up. When I realized how powerful this change was, I chose to embrace it. The sweet addiction I call fulfillment has suddenly motivated me to get out of my comfort zone, to get up from my bed in the early hours just to serve others. This journey has grown into keeping the Key Club website pinned to my desktop, displaying event merch on my wall, and even committing to a role on the board. Volunteering has brought me closer to a purpose in life, one that I believe everyone can relate to through these acts of selflessness My love for Key Club, its community, and its mission is contagious and has seeped into every aspect of my daily life, into my very own ‘comfort zone,’ my bedroom, and my home The impact of volunteering extends beyond personal fulfillment, leading me to stories of gratitude and optimism and leaving lasting impressions It's been a key part of reinforcing the significance of our efforts, and each event, whether it’s distributing food for shelters or participating in helping at a marathon, has taught me empathy, resilience, and the importance of community. Maybe one day I’ll be able to finish my medal collection, having a medal for each annual marathon event. Maybe by the time I finish high school, I’ll find myself wanting more—more memorabilia, more scheduling events, more early mornings at the DART station, and more time. Maybe the day I graduate won’t be the day I stop volunteering. Maybe, the word ‘maybe’ signifies the endless possibilities and the profound impact volunteering can have on one’s life and society for the greater good.

Impact of key club Impact of key club
By: samrawit bekele
Dear person,
In the beginning of my freshmen year, when first heard about Key Club, I was immediately interested in the overall goal of helping others and our environment through acts of community service. However, I wasn't sure what to expect or if it would even be a fit for me. After attending many meetings and volunteer events, this welcoming club sure is leaving a lasting impact in my life
Joining Key Club heavily influenced my high school experiences by allowing me to increase my passion for community service as well as form genuine connections with fellow members. It all began in November 2022 when I attended my first volunteer event, Walk to end Alzheimer's.
Observing how passionate people were in spreading awareness towards a cause truly opened my eyes. As we cheered on enthusiastic walkers, I, for the first time, felt a great gratitude for volunteering Until witnessing it myself, I never realized the true effect of serving my community. This pushed me to attend more and more service events to leave more of a lasting impact. Since then, I’ve prepared meals for the homeless, washed cars, and helped school events run smoothly with Key Club. In addition to all of this, Key Club values having fun and forming friendships. While having fun in socials, such as Jeopardy Night, Painting Socials, etc, and volunteer events, I’ve formed lasting bonds with fellow members. These relationships allowed my experiences in the club and high school overall to be extremely enjoyable and memorable.
Now as I enter my third year in Key Club, I feel that I am constantly growing on a personal level. Key Club is overall an enhancing experience that is helping to improve me as a person. It is truly an understatement to say that Key Club is a club well worth joining.
Sincerely,
Samrawit Bekele

A world of volunteering A world of volunteering
By: ricky nguyen
If volunteering was more common in the world then the world would undoubtedly and obviously become a better place. Volunteering in North Garland’s Key Club has helped me become a better person as it made me value the concept of helping others even when you aren’t obligated to do so.
Volunteering for Key Club during marathons d passing out water, bananas, snacks, and en helping set up and clean up the marathon showed me that even if you aren’t receiving ything in return, you are still helping out your mmunity while making a difference in meone else's life because just seeing the les thanks and other kind gestures of people made volunteering worth it. In addition, volunteering with my community has helped me strengthen my bonds with my peers while also fostering the creation of pleasant memories that I’ll be able to look back on in the future. For example, the early morning train rides to downtown helped me develop bonds with people I never thought I'd ever be friends with such as my fellow officers as well as some of the closest people I know today. If the world volunteered more I'd hope for the bonds of the community to be strengthened and everyone would become closer as well as the personal development of character in everyone in finding meaning in volunteering just because they feel like it. Even though volunteering seems boring at first, volunteering will honestly help you become a better person by developing a sense of happiness when volunteering and making the world a better place with contributions that have no dues while bringing the community closer together and providing hospitality to those who need it by helping those who ask.If the world were to volunteer more frequently, we would progress as a society and bring out community together.

Several months ago, my fellow key club officers and I applied for the Youth Opportunities Fund Grant. We collectively worked together on this project as a team to spread awareness of the overcapacity of animal shelters. We supported the shelter by providing dog beds and food. Through this opportunity, we worked with various organizations like the Garland Animal Shelter and the SPCA of Texas. Our group name for the project was “Cozy Care for Companions.” This project will forever hold a special place in my heart. Not only from the memories of volunteering with my friends but also from the personal resonance that I have with it. I have two cats that I adopted from the Richardson animal shelter: Zuko and Momo. I adopted Zuko 5 days before my birthday, and ever since then, my life has been drastically changed. I remember the first time dealing with cat litter and I was so confused about how to eliminate the odor. But when I got Momo recently in July 2023, I was able to relive the nostalgic and wholesome feelings of a new member joining the family. Zuko is a crazy orange cat who was named after one of my favorite cartoon show characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Momo is a white and black cat and was named after the winged lemur in the same show. This YOF project Key Club has made me realize that I am so lucky that I have received this opportunity to help animals while simultaneously reminiscing on the memories I have created with my own pets. I really, really love animals, especially cats, and helping these animals in these shelters full of different kinds of dogs and cats touched me and who I am as a pet owner of two lovely cats.

While volunteering, I had the privilege to volunteer for a marathon called the Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot with my fellow Key Club members. It all started at 4:00 AM on Thanksgiving break of my sophomore year when my brother a ation, a specialty of Dallas. As usual, we were the first to arrive and as I stepped outside of my dad’s car, a wave of cold wind hit me. Freezing, me and my brother said goodbye to our dad and made way to buy our DART tickets. Everyone else slowly started to arrive by the time of 4:30. At that time, my brother and I split up to our respective groups and, after getting called for attendance, boarded the train to downtown Dallas. After getting off the train and boarding some other trains midway, we finally arrived at downtown where our past historian Chris Pham (now webmaster) led us all through the freezing cold. When dawn broke, we gathered and all got assigned our stations by one of the adult volunteers after being given our yellow volunteer shirts (seen in the photo where I stylishly wore it). I went with a group of 6 people, one being my close friend Lian Cing, to a station where we were tasked to give away Ka'chava protein powder to runners. When giving the protein powders there were a few rush hours, one being a little after the marathon officially started and one right when it ended. When the run ended there was a crowd of people gathering around at our station where other fellow Key Club members (mostly being my brother and his group of friends) even came to help give away the protein powders because of the abundance of people coming. After that packed 30 minutes, my friend and I explored the rest of the marathon where they were giving away various goodies and food. A bit after that we were called for one final attendance of the day and headed towards the DART station again. The day concluded with my dad picking up my brother and I and a memory of Key Club that will forever be engraved in my memory.

SUMMER PLANS SUMMER PLANS
By: Yen Do
For most of our members and officers, summer is the time for relaxation and escape from school. This means more of us will be out on vacations or sitting at home and enjoying the little time we have to ourselves, but there are some of us who must stay hard at work to be prepared for the upcoming school year. Specifically speaking, all of our officers are working to fulfill the personal responsibilitie of their roles while also working together a agroup on larger matters that will affect th whole club. To begin, officers have tasks we hope to accomplish by the time school start in order to build a foundation for the 2024-2025 members. These tasks include finishing t-shirt design, updating website/social media, planning events to attract new members, etc. We are using this time over the summer to get everything ready to recruit new members and welcome returning members for the next school year. On top of preparing the club for the approaching school year, the vice presidents and I are making sure that we have several events planned throughout the summer, specifically local events and a few marathons. Some of the local events include feeding the homeless with our sponsor and doing our annual fundraising car wash. In conclusion, our club’s plans for the summer consist of getting our foundation ready for the school year as well as planning ahead to recruit new members. In addition to that, we have plans for more local events, such as feeding the homeless and doing a carwash, as well as sticking to doing marathons.
