ABOUT ME:

I am Ngin Shaoqi, a graduate from Nanyang polytechnic with a diploma in architecture. My passion lies in the impact of design in the human experience, using the power of built environment as a story telling medium. I am fascinated by how different ways of design can enhance the interaction of space.

“Datsuzoku”, meaning a break from daily routines or habits, a certain freedom from the commonplace in japanese.

Here is my design journey of creating new spaces for new experiences as well as breaking from my own comfort design zone.

ARTBYTE VILLAGE

This project is about reviving the past of Dhoby Ghaut into a hub of our choice.

On the empty plot of land in Cathay Green lies a colourful pixelated village surrounded by the tall city buildings.

The village is segregated into six different colours all made up with cube-like spaces of differing heights and activities. The opening facing right at the School Of The Arts welcomes the artistic youths as well as the others from the neighboring art schools to come together to co-create and showcase their artistic abilities while having a fun and informal spirit, bringing back the long gone art scene of Cathay Cineplex and let loose spirit of Hock Lam Street.

PROGRAMME PERSPECTIVES

Those six different coloured areas are colour coded to the different digital art activities for the youths to with exhibition spaces to display their projects and creations, stalls to provide relevant materials with creation spaces as well as fun spaces to rest and connect with one another.

FLOOR PLANS AND SUB PROGRAMMES

The cube spaces are connected with various types of stairs, ladders, fire fighter poles and slides to make the experience of moving around like the youths are in a snake and ladders game, as well as hide and seek from the differing heights each square space, bringing out the fun of this vibrant digital art creation junction village.

THE LILYBAY

This project is about abstracting parts of nature and adapting it into our architecture.

The Lilybad is a green kayaking school with the abstraction of the ribs, massing and the lightness of lily pads. It is located at the central area of Upper Seletar Reservoir which connects directly to the water body there.

The school acts as a proper training and resting area for the kayaking students. It leads the students from land to water and sailing off in the kayaks. It is mainly made out of bamboo and tensile which keeps the school to be more sustainable.

The qualities of the lilypads are fused into a structure which functions as a green school which promotes sustainability since the materials used are low in carbon emission and allows some natural light to be used and also teaches kayaking as a training and resting spot.

The site is Upper Seletar reservoir park. The school lies on the small plot of land near the watch tower which is directly linked to the river. There are not much obstacles obstructing the natural sunlight and wind and this site is isolated from the noisy city so there are not much noise pollution which is why this site and the programme of the school is chosen.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS

Kayaking promotes sustainability since it’s a sport where you do not need a specific field or tracks to be build, just a water body, kayak, paddle and the strength from an individual.

This school acts as a comfortable training and resting area for the students where all of the facilities that one needs for kayaking is provided from a physical on land gym to one on water and a big resting or hang out spot for students to relax and socialize.

CIGS AND HOLES

For this project, it’s about the exploration of Little India and to enhance an element of a certain area there, the ‘magic’ of the place.

The chosen area here is Sam Leong Road, specifically the car park there with the warehouse stores. The workers near the car park likes to smoke around the area. They will either use the slabs as seats near the ramp of the car park near the plants and rubbish bins but instead of using the rubbish bins, they like to throw their cigarettes into the cracks and holes of the flooring and concrete slabs around the car park.

My structure is to enhance the discarding of cigarettes by shoving them into holes and having a proper area to sit and smoke.

JOURNEY OF THE SKIES

This project is to make a pavilion that enhances a chosen sense of our choice and human experience somewhere around the school.

The sense that i chose is headspace. My site chosen is the free and big school field that’s not sheltered.

My pavilion enhances the human experience of walking and “bringing” the sky with them from making them go through different stages and journeys of walking and looking at the sky. From walking with not a lot of light and the sky above them to a resting space with the vast sky above them where the walls reflects the pattern of the sky.

RENDERED VISUALISATION VIEWS

The facade is made out of Aluminium to reflect the vast sky into the facade so individuals inside the building can have the sky’s image on the walls while walking through the pavilion.

IBDC 2024 COMPETITION

This is my group member and I’s submission for International Building Design Competition 2024.

In the year 2050, interaction between people and nature has been decreasing constantly due to how major technological advancements have taken over our lives.

We fear that this interaction will cease to exist till extinction. Admiralty Park Nature Reserve has an existing nature trail open to the public, but the lack of activities makes the area feel vacant.

The trail will be removed and revamped into an experiential campus to educate the public about Singapore’s ecosystem and wildlife through different spatial designs and structures to make individuals feel like they are a part of the environment, along with technological advancements.

This experiential campus aims to promote preservation and provide opportunities for Singaporeans interested in these studies targeting ecology and wildlife.

PROGRAMMES

Site Chosen is Admiralty Park’s Nature reserve. This site has ample amount of Singapore’s wildlife and ecosystem as well as existing trails and amenities in the park. We are here to upgrade this nature reserve not for the wildlife to be overlooked and use them to educate Singaporeans. This site is chosen compared to other nature reserves is because the land next to the reserve will be having future housing upgrades so this brings opportunities to bring in people into our trail as well as having Republic Polytechnic and Woodlands North MRT next to it.

RUMAH BERSAMA

Located along the riverside of the Kallang River in the lush green land of Old Kallang Airport, Rumah Bersama is a co-living residential space that revives the authentic living culture of the Orang Kallangs, which was wiped out by the British.

Tackling the rising costs of housing and rentals, this space invites residents of all ages to live together in harmony.

The design integrates greenery throughout the dwelling spaces, reconnecting us with nature. From public areas and river streams on the ground floor to semi-private organic residential spaces and a rooftop garden, Rumah Bersama offers a taste of decolonization and community living.
