13th Annual Schlesinger Global Family Enterprise Case Competition | January 7-10, 2026
THE UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT | GROSSMAN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
Welcome Letter from Dean Sanjay Sharma
University of Vermont Grossman School of Business

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 13th annual Schlesinger Global Family Enterprise Case Competition (SG-FECC) at the University of Vermont. This event brings together exceptional graduate and undergraduate teams from leading business schools worldwide to analyze complex cases focused on family enterprises—organizations that are the backbone of the global economy.
Since its inception in 2013, SG-FECC has become a premier platform for academic excellence and international collaboration. Often called the “World Cup of Family Business,” the 2026 SG-FECC features 21 teams, 54 Grossman students, 105 coaches and competitors, and 51 judges representing 11 countries across four continents.
At the Grossman School of Business, we believe deeply in the power of experiential learning—learning by doing. SG-FECC exemplifies this philosophy, offering participants the opportunity to apply theory to real-world challenges, sharpen critical thinking, and collaborate across cultures.
We are thrilled to host this event in beautiful Vermont, a place that inspires reflection, innovation, and connection. May this competition provide an enriching experience that sparks creativity, builds lasting friendships, and strengthens the future of family enterprise worldwide.
Best regards,
Sanjay Sharma Dean, Grossman School of Business

ABOUT SG-FECC
The annual Schlesinger Global Family Enterprise Case Competition (SG-FECC) prepares participants to understand the critical issues that are unique to family enterprise by applying the knowledge and expertise they have developed in the classroom towards solving complex family business cases. During four tough rounds of competition, teams present their case to a distinguished panel of judges who will determine which group best understood, analyzed and presented the case.
Held in Burlington, Vermont, participants will have the opportunity to discover one of the America’s Best Downtowns and a Top 10 City for Outdoor Recreation. Situated within an easy drive of Montreal, Boston, and New York City, Burlington offers many convenient opportunities for arriving, exploring and departing. SG-FECC will also feature many events other than the competition itself, allowing students and coaches the chance to interact with industry professionals and sponsoring organizations during select program meals, social events and local trips.
INTERNATIONAL ACCOLADES

After dutifully completing his MBA to prepare himself to eventually take over their steel fabricating business, a liquidity event changed those plans pretty quickly. So instead, Steve spent a couple of decades running their “Family Office” even though that term was still not well known. Steve eventually got wind of the “Family Enterprise Advisor Program” in Canada, and somehow ended up there, just in time to have his “calling” in his late 40’s. He has since re-oriented his work towards helping family businesses, while concentrating on the family circle. Steve immersed himself in coaching, mediation and facilitation training, and continues to study Bowen Family Systems Theory. He is the author of SHIFT your Family Business (2014) and the Interdependent Wealth (2019).
