The Routledge Course in Business Korean is a mu-needed textbook for students who would like to learn the Korean language used in a business context. e book introduces a set of useful vocabulary and expressions through the topics that are not only business-related but are also those that cover everyday life in Korea. e textbook features up-to-date natural language based on realistic business situations.
Business Korean was created specifically as a textbook for third-year students of Korean, with a high intermediate to low advanced level of proficiency. e idea is that students continue their Korean language education but with a clear focus on business. is is a completely natural way of learning language, as life is business, and language is essential for both. e book is a fruit of a long-term project, for whi we have conducted solarly resear on second language acquisition, presenting it at academic conferences and workshops, and done empirical testing in class of many different dra versions of the book.
Business Korean is designed to be covered in two semesters with a threehour contact time per week. ere are 15 units in total for 7 units in ea semester, and the last one is meant to be optional, depending on the pace of the class and other activities desired by the students as well as the instructor. ere are review sections for every 3 units and also business cases with their own vocabulary lists for every 5 units. is textbook contains well-defined topics with succinct and organized vocabulary and grammar points that are introduced and explained systematically and in the order of complexity.
Ea unit provides training in every area of language learning with reading, speaking, writing, and listening activities. In addition to the main dialog, there is a narration for reading practice and one for listening comprehension practice. Learning the vocabulary items and grammar points is facilitated through various exercises su as crossword puzzles, fill in the blanks, and sentence construction.
Ea unit of the book also contains 10 hanjas, Sino-Korean or Chinese aracters used in Korea, ea of whi oen functions as the root of learned vocabulary, including business terms. e construction of these words is mu comparable to the way new English words are coined based on Latin or Greek roots. Introducing Sino-Korean aracters in ea unit thus helps students not only to understand and learn vocabulary in a more efficient and systematic manner but also to use the hanja creatively to guess the meaning of an unfamiliar word but with recognizable Sino-Korean roots, given the right context.
roughout the book, students are given the opportunity to expand on the basic instruction provided through various exercises and suggested activities. Instructors’ preparation time could thus be drastically reduced, and by the same token, no supplementary material would be necessary. Ea unit builds upon the previous ones; hence it is designed to provide ample repetitions of vocabulary and grammatical expressions to guarantee a mastery of ea unit and the recall of the previously learned units.
Because the book provides English explanations and many exercises, including audio and visual materials, it is also usable for self-study by real businessmen who need to know business Korean at their work places. Illustrations and recording by native speakers of Korean will also facilitate learning, memory, and creative use of what students are taught, thereby making the whole educational process enjoyable.

1. ~ (으)ㄹ 텐데 ‘would, probably, presumably, in my opinion, I think, etc.’
‘ ~ (으)ㄹ 텐데’ is a connective that expresses implication of some kind of presumption, conjecture, reservation, regret, or concern about a certain event or situation. When used as a sentence ender it implies that the sentence is not really finished. In comparison to a finished sentence, this ending is used as a politeness strategy to mitigate the impact of the statement by leing the hearer figure out what is implied. ‘ ~ (으)ㄹ 텐데’ can be used with either a verb, adjective or copula 이. When used with a past tense marker 었/았, it expresses the speaker’ s presumption, conjecture or regret about a past event or situation.

• 요즘은 성수기라서 저렴한 비행기 표를 구하기가 쉽지 않을 텐데 [cf. 않아요].
It’ s a peak season these days so it would not be easy to get an inexpensive plane tiet.
• 30분만 더 일찍 떠났으면 길이 안 막혔을 텐데.
If I had le 30 minutes earlier, I would have avoided the traffic.

2. (아마)~ (으)ㄹ 거다 ‘ ~ probably is/will be’
is sentence ending is used to express the probability of the proposition. (으)ㄹ 걸 ending is normally accompanied by a rising intonation at the end of the sentence.

3. ~만 해도 ‘(lit. even if we take only X for an example) for example, just talking about X’
is phrase is used to give an example of what is stated for clearer understanding and reinforcement. is is used with only noun phrases.

ere seems to be a generation gap even between those with only a few years difference. My younger brother, for example, tells me that I am old fashioned.

‘ ~ (으)ㄹ지(도) 모르다’ expresses conjecture with a strong possibility. Used in the past tense form, 았/었을지도 모르다, it conveys the speaker’ s conjecture that something could have happened.

A nagymama ez este feltünően jól érezte magát. Jó ideje már, hogy nem fogta el a köhögés és nem érzett semmi fájdalmat. Félülő helyzetben feküdt a párnákon, ma bele tudott nézni a lámpába, a nélkül, hogy az vakította volna. És ahogy belebámult a zöld ernyő alól kiáradó sárga fénybe, mintha fölengedett volna a befagyott emlékezet és ez elgyötört, bomladozó szervezetben mintha újra fellobbant volna a régi erő, a régi öröm és a régi bú.
– Nem hallottál soha semmit Samu bácsiról? Te, Vilmácska, akkor még nem éltél, mikor ő elment Indiába. Azelőtt én ő vele együtt laktam és ő szorgalmasan tanult, én meg ügyeltem a háztartásra. Nagyon szeretett engem és mindennap megcsókolt és beszélgetett velem, ugy mint te. Igaz, hogy akkor még nem köhögtem és nem voltam neki olyan nagy terhére, mint mostan a szegény mamának. És akkor, mikor kész orvos lett, azt mondta, hogy ő itt nem tud semmire se menni, hanem elmegy Indiába, ott nagy szükség van jó orvosokra. És akkor elment és engem a mamád magához vett – a jó Isten meg fogja érte áldani, hogy olyan jó volt hozzám – és akkor én nyavalyogni kezdtem és ágyba estem.
– Aztán nem irt a Samu bácsi sohasem levelet? – kérdezte Vilmácska halkan.
– Irt, irt bizony, de nem sokszor, mert az nagyon messze van. De én mindig az ágyban voltam és ha kérdeztem: »Nem jött-e Samutól levél?« Azt mondták: »Nem!« Vagy azt mondták: »Igen!« És ha azt kérdeztem: »Mit irt?« azt mondták: »Semmit!« Öreg vagyok és tanulatlan, nem értettem volna meg a levelet, de olyan jól esett volna csak a hangot is hallani, mely az ő levelét olvassa és akkor elképzeltem volna, hogy ismét ő beszél hozzám – de nem olvasták el nekem soha a leveleit és én csak azt tudtam róla, irt és azt, hogy semmit sem ir. Aztán pedig sok ideig, ha kérdeztem: »Jött-e Samutól levél?« – mindig azt mondta a mama, hogy: »Nem!« és mindig ingerültebben: »Nem!« Láttam, hogy a szegény mamát bosszantja az én ostoba kérdezősködésem és fölhagytam vele és most már régóta nem tudok semmit se róla, csak azt, hogy még most is szereti az ő öreg édes anyját és hogy a jó Isten megáldotta őt, mert olyan jó volt hozzám és ugy szeretett!
Itt a nagymamára rájött a köhögés, Vilmácska tartotta a fejét és jobban feltornyosította a párnákat. Aztán adott neki orvosságot és a nagymama ismét megenyhült.
Vilmácska nagyon komoly lett. Igy még nem hallotta a nagymamát beszélni. Eddig ő magától értetődőnek találta, hogy a nagymama itt feküdjék örökösön az ágyban, mert nem tudta, hogy máskép is lehetne. Kezdte sajnálni azt a szegény asszonyt, akit eddig csak szeretett, mert nem fogta fel, hogy a nagymama nemcsak köhög, hanem szenved is.
– Hát nem fog Samu bácsi sohasem visszajönni?
Oh, ha én azt megélhetném, ha csak egyszer láthatnám édes arczát, örömmel halnék meg. Azaz dehogy, ha ő itt volna, akkor ő meggyógyítana engem, hogy ismét fölkelhetnék és együtt élnék vele még sok, sok időig, mert ő nagyon kitünő orvos és az az orvosság, melyet ő ir édes anyjának, jobban hat, mint az idegen emberé.
Vilmácska sokáig nézte a nagymama ránczos arczát, aztán lassan fölkelt és megfogta kezét.
– Nagymama, igazán meg tudna téged gyógyitani Samu bácsi?
– Oly igazán, mint ahogy Isten őt megáldja.
– Aztán, ugy-e nagy örömet okozna neked, ha ismét láthatnád?
– Mondhatatlan örömet! De én öreg vagyok és legjobb volna mielőbb meghalnom, hogy ne legyek tovább is terhére a mamának, meg a papának, meg Etelkának, akik nagyon sokat szenvednek miattam.
– Ó ne búsulj nagymama, mert Samu bácsi el fog jönni és meg fog gyógyítani, – kiáltott Vilmácska és tapsolt örömében.
– Nem, gyermekem! Samu bácsi nagyon messze van, nem ér rá öreg anyát meglátogatni.
– De el fog jönni, mert én irni fogok neki, hogy te beteg vagy és csak ő tud meggyógyítani, és erre ő el fog jönni és meg fog
gyógyítani. De én nem szólok erről senkinek és te, nagymama, szintén ne szólj róla senkinek, mert hátha a mama nem engedné meg.
Ezzel Vilmácska kitépett a füzetjéből egy lap papirost és irt Samu bácsinak:
Kedves Samu bácsi!
Én a te Vilmácska hugod vagyok és ma hallottam a nagymamától, hogy te Indiában vagy és orvos vagy. Kérlek szépen, Samu bácsi, gyere haza mielébb, ha csak egy napra is és gyógyítsd meg a nagymamát, mert nagyon szenved, köhög és meg akar halni, hogy ne legyen a mi terhünkre. Én nagyon szeretem a nagymamát és te is szereted, de a doktor bácsi jobban szereti Etelkát és egész délután zongorázik vele, mig a nagymamának csak egyszer fogja a pulsusát és aztán magára hagyja. A nagymama már sok, sok év óta nem hallott rólad semmit, mert nem érti meg a leveleket és azért a mama nem is olvasta föl neki. De ha látni fog, nagyon meg fog örülni és én is örülni fogok, ha Samu bácsit láthatom, a ki meggyógyítja a nagymamát és nekem mesélni fog Indiáról. Jőjj rögtön, csókollak és ölellek ezerszer, a te kis hugod

U. i. Ne hidd, hogy mindig ilyen csunyán irok, de le srófoltam a lámpát, hogy alig látok, mert a nagymama azalatt, mig irtam, elaludt. Vannak-e Indiában is czethalak?
A kicsike ujjait a görcs húzta, mire elkészült a levelével. Az óra már éjfélre járt, a nagymama nyugodtan aludt és ő kezdett fázni a hűvös szobában. De borítékba kellett még tenni a levelét és rá kellett még irni a czímét, mielőtt ágyacskáját felkereshetné. Óvatosan, zajtalanul osont a szalonba, ott meggyujtott egy gyufát és annak világa mellett vett magának iróasztaláról egy borítékot. Visszasietett a nagymamához, felhúzta még egy kevéssé a lámpát, mert a czímet szebben és kövérebb betűkkel kell irni és hozzá látott a dologhoz:

Aztán eszébe jutott, hogy hátha nem lesz elegendő ez a czím és az »India« alá még oda biggyesztette Ázsiában. Aztán könnyű lélekkel, mint a ki nagy munkát végzett, imádkozott, levetkőzött és menten el is szenderült.
II.
A nagymama egyre köhög. De tavaszi verőfény költözött elaggott szivébe és könnyűvé teszi neki a szenvedést. Nem sinyli többé betegségét reménytelen végtelenségig, csak addíg, mig egy kis levélke elérkezik mesés Indiákba és elszólítja onnan az ő egyetlen fiát, akinek a keze érintésétől meg fog gyógyulni. Az a kis levélke pedig jár valahol a messze világban, vagy henyél valami piros póstahivatalban, mindenképen hűtlen galamb, mert nem viszi el a reá bizott hírt és vissza sem tér megmondani, hogy nem viszi el.
Vilmácska sűrűn settenkedik a zongora körül.
– Etelka, tengeren mennek Indiába?
– Tengeren, de meg vasuton is, miért kérded?
– Csak úgy, kíváncsi voltam, hogy ha Samu bácsi meglátogatna minket, tengeren utazna-e. Aztán soká tart az utazás?
– Körülbelül egy hónapig.
– Szent isten, mily soká! A levélnek is ugyanannyi idő kell?
– Természetesen.
Vilmácska az iróasztalhoz fut és tanulmányozza a kalendáriumot. Azután berohan a nagymamához.
– Nagymama, augusztus tizedikén itt lesz a Samu bácsi.
– Honnan tudod, angyalkám?
– Megnéztem a kalendáriumban. Most junius van és tizedikén adtam föl a levelet, egy hónap mulva megkapja Samu bácsi, az lesz julius tizedikén, egy hónapig tart az utazás, augusztus tizedikén pedig itt lesz. Meglásd!
A nagymamára boldog napok derültek. Vilmácskának vakácziója van és majdnem egész nap eltrécsel vele. Most már nem járja a mese, csak a beszélgetés. Vilmácska minduntalan zaklatja Etelkát Indiáról való kérdéseivel és a mit megtud, hiven tovább adja a nagymamának.
Indiában elefántokon járnak az emberek. A Dunát Gangesnek hívják és szintén átfolyik a városon. Az emberek sárgalázban halnak meg és angolul beszélnek. Aztán a kenyeret nem a péktől, hanem a kertésztől veszik, mert az fán terem, mint nálunk az alma. Aztán van sok, sok kókuszdió meg gránátalma, kaktusz és pálma. Nagyon szép ott, de nagyon meleg. Samu bácsi, ha augusztusban megérkezik, fázni fog minálunk. De ő majd hamar leszokik a nagy melegségtől. És igy tovább. A nagymama meg beszél arról az időről, mikor a Samu bácsi még az egyetemre járt és ő vezette a háztartást. Beszélt sokat és bőven és jól esett neki, hogy erről beszélgethet. Aztán együtt számlálták a napokat és az első hónap a nagy várakozásban és trécselésben elég gyorsan repült tova.
– Ma utazik el Samu bácsi Indiából, mondotta Vilmácska julius 10-én.
– Egy hónap mulva itt lesz, mondotta a nagymama, aztán mind a ketten nevettek.
Vilmácskán erőt vett az izgatottság. Mihelyt fölébredt reggel, kinézett az ablakon, hogy szép idő van-e. Ha esett az eső, nógatta Etelkát:
– Mit gondolsz Etelka, az egész világon esik most az eső?
– Dehogy. Lehetséges, hogy már a zugligetben is süt a nap.
– Ha a zugligetben süt a nap, gondolta Vilmácska, akkor a tengeren annál inkább szép az idő. Samu bácsinak szerencsés útja lesz.
A nagymama egyre köhög. Kezdi hosszúnak találni az időt, mig Samu fia megváltja. A fiatal orvos pedig, aki folyton Etelkával zongorázik, napjában háromszor is benéz hozzá. Vilmácska nagyon örül ennek és most már ő is szereti az orvos bácsit.
– Mennyi idő van még hátra? kérdezi a nagymama.
– Még csak tizenöt nap, feleli Vilmácska.
– Még csak tiz nap, mondogatja későbben.
– Mához egy hétre. És akkor már ő is remegett a fölindulástól.
Egy este bejött a nagymamához az orvos, a mama, meg Eteka is. Nagyon komolyak voltak és feltünően szives hangon beszéltek a nagymamához. A nagymama pedig mereven feküdt a párnákon és fején jeges borogatás volt. Láz gyötörte.
– Szegény nagymama, suttogta Etelka. Vilmácska átkarolta a nyakát és megcsókolta érte.
Az orvos még irt a patikának és akkor elvonultak a szalonba. Vilmácska magára maradt, a nagymama aludt.
– Jaj csak itt volna már Samu bácsi, gondolta magában, a nagymama igazán már nagyon rosszul van.
És ekkor elképzelte magának a tengert, meg a hajót, amely oly nagy, hogy a Dunára rá nem fér és Samu bácsit, amint köpenyébe burkolózik és fázik. Aztán, hogy hogynem, hirtelen nyilallást érzett a szive táján és elállt a lélekzete.
– Hátha nem kapta meg a levelemet!
Ó, de, hogy is ne! Miért ne kapta volna meg? Hiszen helyesen irta rá a… Itt érezte, amint a nyelvét hirtelen szárazság lepi el és a torkát fojtogatja valami.
– Szent Isten nem irtam rá az utcza nevét meg a házszámot!… Felugrott és besietett a szalonba.
– Etelka, mondd csak sok utcza van Indiában?
Az orvos kaczagott.
– Persze, hogy sok, felelt ő Etelka helyett, annyi, mint a hány szót ejt ki Vilmácska naponta.
A szegény gyermeknek leesett az álla.
– Hát olyan nagy város az? – kérdezte és alig győzte visszafojtani a sirást.
– Akkora, mint Európa, aztán nem város az, hanem ország, melyben ezer város van. Nem tanultad még Ázsia földrajzát?
– Nem, kiáltott Vilmácska és futott ki a szobából. Még hallotta, mint nevetnek rajta.
Leborult a pamlagra és tenyerébe rejtette az arczát. Olyan végtelen fáradtnak érezte magát és a szive oly hangosan dobogott, hogy szinte megrepedt. Torkát fojtogatta a zokogás, de nem volt szabad, nehogy a nagymamát fölkeltse. Mihez fogjon, mit csináljon most már? Mit mondjon a nagymamának? – El fog mulni az a négy nap és akkor a nagymama kérdezni fogja: »Hol marad a Samu bácsi?« És Samu bácsi nem lesz itt és nem lesz itt egy hét mulva, egy hónap mulva sem és a nagymama azt fogja gondolni, hogy Samu bácsi már nem szereti őt, ami nagyon fájna neki, vagy azt fogja gondolni, hogy elsülyedt a tengeren és őt, Vilmácskát fogja halálával okolni. – Azután Samu bácsi nélkül a nagymama nem fog felgyógyulni és ennek már csakugyan ő lesz az oka, mert ha nem titkolózik, hanem megmondja a mamának vagy Etelkának a dolgot, akkor a levél megérkezett volna és Samu bácsi most csakugyan
úton van hazafelé. – Jóságos Istenkém, segíts, mostan – mit mondjak a nagymamának?
A nagymama meg fekszik nyugodtan. Arcza sárga, mint viaszk. Ajkai mozognak és alig érthetően jön ki belőle a hang:
– Vilmácska!
Vilmácska felugrik és megcsókolja a takarón nyugvó aszott kezet. Szólni nem tud.
– Mikor érkezik meg Samu?
– Négy nap mulva – súgja Vilmácska és meghúzódik az ágy fejénél, ahol sötét van.
– Négy nap mulva – ismétlé a nagymama sóhajtva – azt hittem, hogy holnap…
Vilmácska nem felelt. A nagymama sem szól. Mintha aludt volna.
– Azt álmodtam, hogy már itt van – kezdi ismét. Olyan szép és olyan jó volt hozzám. Megcsókolta az arczomat és homlokomra tette a kezét és azt mondta: »Szegény nagymama«. És én sirtam örömömben és fel tudtam kelni az ágyból és egészséges voltam. –Négy nap mulva…
Vilmácska arczán végig peregtek a néma könyek. Igy lett volna, ha ő nem cselekszik oly meggondolatlanul. Most azonban ez az álom nem fog teljesülni, sem ma, sem holnap, sem négy nap mulva…
– Hiszen nagymama, ez a négy nap hamar fog elmulni és azután…
El sem merte gondolni, mi lesz azután.
– Nagyon beteg vagyok, lehet, hogy addig meg is halok és akkor itt lesz az én Samu fiam és én nem fogom látni, de ő engem fog látni hidegen, holtan és öröm helyett csak búban és gyászban lesz, – azt fogja mondani: »Miért nem hivtatok akkor, amikor még élt, miért
hívtatok el engem csak a temetésre?« – Nem kellett volna irni, Vilmácska, nem kellett volna irni…
És a vén asszony szemeiből megeredt a köny, a melle fáradságosan lihegett, szólni nem tudott, de a gyermek fülében egyre hangzott még: »Nem kellett volna irni, nem kellett volna irni…«
Hogy került ágyába, nem tudta. De midőn reggel felébredt, könytől ázott volt a párnája. Látta álmában a Samu bácsit, kezében tartva az ő levelét és szigorú pillantásokat vetve rá. »Igy tanulsz te földrajzot?« feddette és oda tartotta eléje a borítékot. Vilmácska pedig sirt és hiába mondogatta neki, hogy ő csak a második osztályba járt és Ázsia földrajzát csak a harmadikban tanulják, hogy ő szorgalmas és nagyon jól tudta azt, mire tanították – Samu bácsi csak azt hajtotta: »Mindegy, nem kellett volna irni…«
– Vilmácska! – szólt a nagymama.
– Igen! – riadt föl Vilmácska.
– Hány nap mulva jön Samu bácsi?
Mintha kést forgattak volna meg a kis leány szivében.
– Három nap mulva, zokogta és visszahanyatlott az ágyába.
A feje nagyon fájt. A nyelve száraz volt és iszonyúan kínozta a szomjuság. Inni akart, de nem mert föltekinteni. A nagymama pedig jobban érezte magát és bészélt arról, a mit már oly sokszor mondott, hogy hol fog aludni Samu bácsi, mi lesz, ha itt lesz és igy tovább órahosszat. Vilmácska meg hallgatta és nem mert megmozdulni. Midőn jött az orvos, két betege volt és egyféle orvosságot irt mind a kettőnek… láz ellen. Majd bejött hozzá a mama és Etelka is. Nagyon sajnálták szegénykét és megcsókolták. Vilmácska karjai közt tartotta Etelka nyakát és ajkához vonta a fejét.
– Etelka, édes aranyos Etelka, irj a Samu bácsinak levelet, hogy jőjjön el és gyógyítsa meg a nagymamát.
– Hová gondolsz, kicsikém, csak nem fog ő ilyen hosszú utat megtenni…
– Etelka, irjál neki, különben én is meghalok, zokogta a gyermek és csókjaival borította el Etelka arczát.
– Mi lelte ezt a gyermeket? – kérdezte a mama. Különben, tette hozzá gondolkodva, nem is olyan rossz gondolat, nem a nagymama miatt – rajta ugy sem segithetne – hanem igen szép volna, ha eljönne az esküvőtökhöz.
– Csakugyan, csakugyan, mondotta Etelka, Béla is örülni fog, ha megismeri kollega rokonát.
– Tehát irsz? kiáltott Vilmácska… Köszönöm, köszönöm, köszönöm…
És a mint magára maradt, össze tette a kezeit és imádkozott:
»Jó Istenkém, most ez egyszer bocsáss még meg és vigasztald a nagymamát, hogy még két hónapig várhasson.«
Az orvos bácsi, mióta Etelkának a vőlegénye lett, ugy látszik, nagyon szereti a nagymamát. Most már óra hosszat ül mellette és figyel minden lélekzetére. De rá is fér a szegény nagymamára ez a szeretet, mert olyan gyönge, hogy már köhögni sem tud és már nem ismeri meg az embereket. Vilmácska nagyon sajnálja a nagymamát, de másrészt örül, hogy nem kell vele beszélgetnie.
Egy délután, midőn az orvos bácsi kezében tartotta a nagymama pulsusát, az sokáig tekintett az orvos arczába és alig hallhatóan suttogta:
– Édes Samu fiam!
Vilmácska nagyot sóhajtott. Ma van augusztus tizedike.
– Jó Istenkém, ha én a harmadik osztályba jártam volna!
