Footnotes As If Things Weren’t Tough Enough

As if the greyhound business wasn’t tough enough already, the industry faced another huge obstacle as hurricane Irma set its sights on Florida in early September. In what was to be the most powerful hurricane to ever hit the mainland Irma blasted through the Caribbean, Puerto Rico and Haiti before making its way to south Florida.

Early prediction had the storm heading directly through Miami and working its way up the coast, but after hitting the Keys, the storm pushed up towards the west Florida coast and eventually straight through the center of the state. Not that it mattered actually because the size of Irma was going to make sure that just about everyone and everywhere in the state was going to feel the effects.

Originally projected as a category 5, the storm reached Florida as a four and slowly dropped to a three after some time on land. Still more than powerful enough to do significant damage, greyhound kennels, owners, trainers and even some of the racetracks made preparations and took ALL the necessary steps to ensure the safety and well being of their greyhounds. For anyone who ever doubted the respect and love greyhound men and women have for their animals, talk to all of the folks who hunkered down with their racers and lived in or around their kennels even while other citizens were being told to leave or were evacuating on their own. There was also an outpouring from around the country as concerned owners, farmers, adoption groups and greyhound supporters followed the storm closely and kept contact, as best they could, with our friends in Florida and offered any and all assistance they could.

Predictably, the anti-racing puffs had to use the opportunity to make phony claims, false accusations and question the integrity of our industry. Meanwhile not a single one of those entities lifted a finger or offered any sort of help. Yes, they were full of suggestions and half baked ideas, but when it came to useful assistance or workable ideas.…Crickets! In the end it appears it was just another

sensationalized effort in order to try and raise funds.

One of the many ideas, or perhaps, questions brought to the front though the Irma ordeal was “Why don’t the kennels evacuate their greyhounds?” Simple question, yes, simple answer, no. First of all, where are you going to evacuate that many greyhounds, that quickly? It’s not like there are facilities with hundreds and hundreds of empty crates and space waiting in the wings. Secondly, is it wise to load up trucks and trailers full of greyhounds and head off to parts unknown, in hot and possibly dangerous weather, with limited fuel available and traffic jams in every direction?

Probably not. Did the zoos, shelters and other sanctuary facilities all pack up and leave? I don’t think so, but somehow the greyhound industry gets sighted for being “unprepared” for the emergency.

Needless to say, the greyhound community did right by our animals and as of this writing, all the greyhounds in Florida came through the event unscathed. Minor damage occurred to some facilities and a lot of tense moments were endured, but overall, the people of the industry did the right thing and stood tall against the machine known as Irma.

Thank you to all the great greyhound people around the country and especially those dedicated folks in Florida who put their furry friends first!

It is unknown at this time how much physical damage was done to the racetrack facilities and if and when any racing would resume. Obituaries Kevin Joel Gresham

Kevin Joel Gresham, 62, died August 24, 2017 at Hillsboro Community Hospital in Hillsboro.

He was born March 27, 1955 to Chester and Helen (Kennedy) Gresham in Emporia, KS. He married Javonni Sparlin May 31, 1974 at Maize. He owned and operated Gresham’s Greyhound Farm. Kevin was a member of the NGA for over 25 years and a regular at the meets. He raised and raced some great greyhounds in his day.

Survivors include: wife, Javonni Gresham of Rural Durham; son, Chet Odie (Margaret) Gresham of Austin, Texas; grandchild, Lucinda Lady Bird Gresham; brothers, Mike of Helena, Montana, Steven of Alabama, Pat of Wichita, and Jeff of Sedgwick. One brother deceased, Marlin.

Michael Dalton

Michael Dalton of Tipperary, Ireland passed away suddenly, at home, on June 24, 2017.

Michael was the son of NGA member and Hall of Famer, Pat Dalton and his wife Nellie and the brother of NGA member, John Dalton.

He will be sadly missed and is survived by his loving wife Mary Jo, son Gavin, daughter Lauren, parents Pat and Nellie, brothers John and Patrick, sister Marie Hall, brother-inlaw, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbors and many friends.

Jeff Wilhite

Richard “Jeff ” Wilhite was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 18, 1962, to Roy Randall and Dessa Ree (Wadkins) Wilhite, Jr. Jeff passed into the loving arms of Jesus on September 1, 2017. He was preceded in death by both parents and his grandparents.

Jeff is survived by his wife of 30 years, Jeana (Narduzzo) Wilhite; sister, Rhonda Bullard; niece, Tiffany

Bumpous both of Mississippi; aunts, uncles and many cousins.

Jeff was a member of the NGA for over 20 years. He loved his greyhounds and ran the Richard Wilhite Kennel at Bluffs Run for many years where he once earned Trainer of the Year honors.

His outstanding greyhound, Be My Bubba, was Greyhound of the Year and still owned the track record of 29.33 seconds for the 5-16 mile course, set in 2000, when the track closed in 2015.

His racers won many stakes and always received the best of care.

He will be greatly missed by all.

Tony Morris

(1936 - 2017) Navy Veteran, Sikorsky Aircraft instrumentation engineer, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Coach, Umpire, Friend…this was Tony Morris’ life. In addition, he was a big fan of greyhound racing and became an owner and breeder and raised hundreds of pups.

Tony married his wife Dottie in 1963 and they resided in Connecticut.

He started working at Sikorsky in 1960 and in 1977, he was transferred to the local Sikorsky plant where he worked until he retired. The Morris’ have two children Jeff and Tracey and grandchildren Wesley and Kelsey.

From his daughter’s message on Tony’s passing: “He worked so hard during his life to make sure my mom, my brother, and I never wanted for anything. He loved his grandchildren with all his heart. He loved his family, his friends, his greyhounds, and the games of baseball and softball. He worked all day every day and then always had enough energy to go out and teach my brother and I the games he loved. He was never too tired.

I played softball in college because of his belief in me as a player and the countless hours he spent on the field with me practicing. I know he coached many of you in baseball or softball and let me tell you he loved you all. I am so

happy he got to see Wesley play baseball all through high school and even coach him in his younger days and got to watch Kelsey Lay reach her dream of playing Division 1 softball at USF. I am so happy he got to watch her play her freshman year. He never missed a game whether it was on live stream, tv, or gamestatslive. At 80 years old, he still was coaching Kelsey after every game.

I know he will be looking down from heaven and will never miss a game.”

Tony was a greyhound racing fan in Connecticut playing the dogs at the local facility. When he moved to West Palm Beach, he continued to come play at Palm Beach Kennel Club. He and his friend decided to buy a litter of puppies in 1982 and the rest is history.

Up until a few years ago, he continued to raise greyhounds. The Morris’ first brood was Shirley I Fly and soon after the Morris’ began breeding and raising greyhounds from their home.

“Shirley was a character. One day I couldn’t find her and finally opened the linen closet and all I saw was a nose and two eyes buried in sheets and towels,” said Dottie Morris. “She had a habit of jumping into bed and laying right next to Tony. Tony would tell her your making me too hot Shirley,” she added.

At one point, they had 17 greyhound puppies in their garage kennel.

They raised greyhounds for themselves and raced them locally and throughout the state. They also assisted kennels like Roy Grober and James Douglas raising their puppies. For years, the Morris’ would bring puppies to the track so the customers could see and pet the future racers. It was one of the most popular activities at the track.

One of their litters, out of Stan’s Boy Flyer and Go Go Cleo was born April 5, 2003 and visited as puppies on display. And in that litter, was one superstar in the making, Ozzie the Man. Ozzie hit the track in late 2004. Ozzie raced

with the Cahill & O’Connor Kennel from 2004 to 2006 and won all the major industry awards including 2005 All American Captain, the Rural Rube and National Win Championship. He also won PBKC’s 2005 $20,000 Bob Balfe Puppy Stakes, 2006 $25,000 He’s My Man Classic and $25,000 Arthur J. Rooney Sr. St. Patrick’s Invitational. He also accomplished several win streaks including 26 in a row, the longest win streak on the Royal Palm Course to this day and the second-longest in track history.

His retirement celebration at the track was one of PBKC’s biggest crowds. In 2014, he was inducted into the PBKC Hall of Fame where a star with his name is included in the Walk of Fame.

Tony Morris’ life was full and rewarding. He will be remembered and appreciated by many, including his friends at Palm Beach Kennel Club. We thank him for being a positive part of greyhound racing here and for introducing to PBKC, the world famous, Ozzie the Man. Godspeed Tony.

Jeanette Carroll

Jeanette “Janie” Long was born in Hialeah, Florida on March 16, 1952.

She passed away on August 8 in Miami Florida.

Janie was born into a pioneer greyhound racing family. She was a 3rd generation dog trainer behind her father and mother, Ralph and Rosemary Long and her grandparents

Jackie and Jeanette Rae. Janie grew up in the kennel world and traveled all over the country. As a child, her winters were spent in south Florida where she went to school and helped her dad with the greyhounds at the Hollywood track. The majority of her summers growing up were spent in Oregon, where her dad raced at Multnomah. She made several of those cross country trips in the dog trailer with the greyhounds. Janie and her best friend Carol Joiner were the first two female leadouts ever to work at Biscayne Dog Track.

Immediately after finishing high school she went to work as a greyhound trainer and traveled all over the country to various tracks breaking in puppies for her father. She raced and trained kennels at Palm Beach, Black Hills, Green Mountain, Waterloo, Yuma, Seminole, Rocky Mountain, Mile High, Interstate, Wonderland, Multnomah, and probably a few more we’re missing.

When it came time to settle and raise a family, she and her then husband Gary, bought a small dog farm in Boring, Oregon. She raced at Multnomah in the summer and worked the farm in the winter. In 1998 her mother, Rosemary, passed away and Janie went back to Florida, where she ran her mother’s Hollywood kennel in the winter months. She also had kennels at Sarasota and Valley Greyhound Park.

Some of her more notable and favorite greyhounds were Streaky, Sky Capella, Clifton Dealer, and BC’s Express.

In 2003 Janie was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given almost no chance of survival. Her strong will and spirit helped her beat it and she continued to work through the many illnesses she faced for years after. Her doctors called Janie “a miracle”. None of them had ever seen a 14 year pan-

creatic cancer survivor.

In the last couple of years, she still helped her daughter Crystal in the kennel business. She watched races and ran the show while Crystal was busy out of town, even though she wasn’t physically able to do it full time.

She relished her other job; being at home caring for her grandson, Joseph, playing with, nurturing and shuttling him around. She lived for those experiences.

Even until the end Janie was very active on social media and plugged greyhound racing and promoted greyhound adoption as much as she could.

The industry has lost another great ambassador and she will be missed greatly by all.

Raymond Thurber

Raymond C. Thurber, age 74 of Vernon, FL passed away from this life on Monday, September 11, 2017 at Bay Medical Center in Panama City, FL. He was born on March 12, 1943 to the late Raymond A. Thurber and Louella (Freberg) Thurber in Pawtucket, RI. Raymond had been a resident of the Vernon area for the past 12 years moving from Massachusetts and was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of the National Greyhound Association from 1972 until the time of his death. He owned some great greyhounds including Caitlyn Stoodard who recently captured the Consolation Derby at Derby Lane.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen “Bette” Thurber of Vernon, three daughters, Brenda Levesque and husband Todd of Vernon, Mary Tweedell of Richmond, RI, Kim Amelingmeier and husband Brent of Roswell, GA, one sister, Elaine Wach of Pawtucket, RI, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

We have lost a great man and he will be sadly missed.

Speed helps Patriot/Taplin litter off to fast start In a three-month stretch from June through August, Patriot/Taplin was as hot as any kennel at Wheeling Island.

The Joe Otto-trained kennel had 205 victories the first five months of the 2017 racing season – a 41-win a month average. For the three summer months, the kennel racked up 171 victories – a 57-win average per month.

Although several veteran greyhounds have contributed to the win total, the Patriot/Taplin Kennel surge has been fueled by an influx of young, tal- by ented pups. The ken- Stan nel was third in the Pawloski standings at the end of August – last year they finished sixth.

“We do have some older racers in the kennel, but most of our greyhounds are around 2 years old. It’s been exciting, watching the pups develop,” Otto said. “By far, this is the strongest the kennel has ever been. It’s nice coming to weigh-in each day knowing you have several greyhounds with a shot of winning.”

Three littermates in the kennel – JS In The Red, JS Bird Dawg and JS Enuf Is Enuf – have impressed early in their careers at Wheeling Island. In 63 combined starts through early September, the sprinters had 22 wins, 16 seconds, 5 thirds and 3 fourths – a 73 percent mark on the trifecta ticket.

The October 2015 greyhounds out of KC And All-JS Summer Hummer broke in at Wheeling in June and all three of the front speedsters have Grade AA wins on the resumes.

“Not very often do you have three littermates climb the ladder to Grade

AA and then win in the top grade this early in their careers. They have been

a pleasant surprise,” Otto said. “They are speed greyhounds and need to get out of the box early if they are going to have a chance of winning. They are a little stronger than I thought they would be.”

All three greyhounds prefer an inside post position, although “with their early speed, they can get the lead from any hole,” Otto said. “They don’t slash to the rail and hurt themselves when they get outside boxes. They’ll go straight to the turn until they clear the field.”

Otto gives JS In The Red the nod as the best of the three, but “not by that much.” In his first 20 starts, he had 7 wins (two in Grade AA), 6 seconds, 2 thirds and 1 fourth.

JS In The Red’s box speed and drive to the turn have been instrumental in his success, especially in the upper grades. In his last nine starts (one in Grade B, one in Grade A and six in Grade AA), the youngster has been first or second heading down the backstretch in each race except one.

“He’s improved his break with more and more races,” Otto noted. “If he continues to break sharp, he’ll continue to be a solid Grade AA greyhound.”

JS Bird Dawg doesn’t have as much box speed, but may have the best rush of the three littermates to the first turn.

In his first 21 races, he had 6 wins (one

in Grade AA), 7 seconds, 1 third and 2 fourths.

“As long as he has a little room, he’s going to be on top or close to the lead every time,” Otto said. “He has a power rush to the turn.”

In JS Bird Dawg’s first 13 career races, he hit the quiniela ticket in 12 of those starts – two in Maiden, three in Grade D, one in Grade C and Grade B and five in Grade A. “Bird Dawg had an incredible start,” Otto said. “That doesn’t happen very often starting out and moving up the ladder.”

Although JS Enuf Is Enuf has been overshadowed a bit by his two brothers, Otto sees a lot of potential. In his first 22 trips, he had 9 wins (four in Grade AA), 2 seconds and 2 thirds.

“He needs to get a little more con-

sistent,” Otto said. “He may end up being the best down the road.”

The littermates raced at the National Greyhound Association Spring Meet in Kansas. JS Bird Dawg and JS Enuf Is Enuf were purchased by the Patriot/ Taplin auction group while Shannon Henry of Kansas, who raised the litter, decided not to sell JS In the Red. “We have really done well with our auction choices. Tom Taplin and Vincent Savill (kennel operators) put a lot of time and effort into their decisions,” Otto said. “These were not big-money greyhounds. I’m looking forward to the fall meet.”

A few other youngsters giving the kennel a boost this year include PJ Ringthembells, PJ Cut Her Off, PJ Black Beatles, SE’s Nekoma, My Mate Buddy and Hallytab Ginger.

The Boeckenstedt Family Farm There is a mile long lane west of St. Donatus, Iowa that is in a beautiful valley. It leads to the farm where the Boeckenstedts raise their greyhounds.

“Our farm is on part of the farm my parents (Carl and Mary) own,” explained Brad Boeckenstedt. “We (Brad

and his son Blake) rent the land from them when we started the farm with the first greyhound we got.”

That first greyhound was a halfinterest some 20 years ago. It was a nice switch from 20 years in the construc- by tion business. The Steve Boeckenstedts have Sigafoose been raising greyhounds for 15 years.

“I was raised on a farm and love the farm,” said Boeckenstedt.

But the jump to the greyhound business?

“It was interesting,” said Boeckenstedt. “You can breed the best with the best but there are no guarantees.”

The business has grown. From that one greyhound, Boeckenstedt has bookings in Wheeling, Dubuque and Naples. In addition, their greyhounds run at Southland and at several tracks in Florida.

“We would love to get a booking at Southland,” said Boeckenstedt.

“We had a booking at Bluffs Run (in Council Bluffs) when the track closed, we miss the track.”

“Raising greyhounds,” said Boeckenstedt, “is all about TLC, tender loving care. At all stages of their

upbringing and training what is foremost is TLC in taking care of the greyhounds.”

That TLC comes up when Boeckenstedt is asked about any greyhounds that stand out in his memory.

“Boc’s Hank Jr. and Boc’s Tony Romo,” he quickly replied, the pair of greyhounds who were the co-Greyhounds of the Year in Bluffs Run’s last season.

For now “I am taking it a year at a time,” said Boeckenstedt. “My son, Blake, is my partner in the business.

He runs the farm and handles a lot of the day-to-day operation.

“I continue to love the unknown of the business. It is all about peaks and valleys and we are always looking forward to raising that next great greyhound.

“We love the competition and enjoy racing against some of our best friends.”

A brief look at recent developments in racing.

First impressions can be deceiving.

Hkf Betty Lou proved that to Derby Lane kennel owner and trainer John Farmer, who received the greyhound a year ago from Ohio breeder Richard Knauff.

“I was just hoping she could win (at) Grade A,’’ Farmer said. “I got four dogs (from Knauff) at the same time, and I thought the other ones were actually better (than Hkf Betty Lou).’’

Only Hkf Betty Lou has a stakes title from that group.

The 29-month-old female from a litter by Bella Infrared and Hkf Sweetaboutu was the longest of eight finalists at odds of 25-1. She paid $52.20 for a $2 win mutuel, the biggest payout for a stakes winner since at least 2004-05 – a span of 154 stakes finals. It topped the $41.80 win mutuel that D’Arcy kennel’s Kinloch Brae produced in the 2008 Sprint Classic.

“I knew she would be tough to catch if she could get (to) the front,’’ Farmer said. “I thought as long as she out-broke (Rt’s Bo Jangles in box 1), she would be able to outrush everybody else. The 1 (dog) didn’t break real sharp. . . and she did.’’

Rt’s Bo Jangles, the prohibitive 2-5 favorite and winner of five consecutive races for Cal Holland kennel, was the last greyhound out of the starting box. Hkf Betty Lou, leaving post 3, broke first and led every stride – finishing 2-1/2 lengths in front of Tmc’s Moonbeam (Steubenville kennel). The 60-pound dog’s winning time on the 550-yard course was 30.27 seconds, her second-best clocking in 58 starts on the sprint track (she clocked a 30.23 in December 2016). She earned $3,200.

Hkf Betty Lou, who had lost nine of 10 starts entering the finale, came close to not being Farmer Racing kennel’s lone

stakes entry.

“I had a choice of (Hkf Betty Lou) and a few other dogs,’’ Farmer said. “She won a race a couple starts ago (a five-length victory on Aug. 9), and I thought, ‘Well, if she gets the inside, she’ll be tough to catch.’ She definitely was.’’

Hkf Betty Lou’s 13th victory from 68 starts set off a huge $1 superfecta payout on the 3-4-1-7 combination that returned $30,221.20. Rt’s Bo Jangles finished third and Fiesta Indiana (Burk Greyhounds kennel) was fourth, followed by Barts Mr Peabody (Bartley Corporation), Se’s Wepon X (Nova), Po Dunk (Alderson) and Ctw Party Animal (Clear The Way Kennels). “(Hkf Betty Lou) has a little prance in that she bounces out when she goes walking,’’ Farmer said. “I told my helper (Sara Koch) the other day when I got her out (of the kennel), ‘Look at Betty with her little prance.’ It was funny.’’

It was Farmer’s third career stakes victory at Derby Lane, and first since Highlyclassified won the 2015 Holiday Distance Classic, leading to the dog’s selection that year to the All-America first team and Flashy Sir award winner as the nation’s best distance performer. Farmer’s first Derby Lane stakes winner came in the 2015 St. Petersburg Derby with Hkf Crazy Horse, Knauff’s first stakes title.

Derby Lane has new faces

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Derby Lane director of racing Les Robison had dog cards scattered across his desk recently in his second-floor office above the paddock.

A new season brings new faces.

When Derby Lane kicked off its 2017-18 greyhound campaign Saturday with a matineeevening doubleheader, fans saw a 24 percent change in the kennel roster from the start of the previous meet.

Two first-time bookings, Clear The Way Kennels and Rangel kennel, have joined Derby Lane. They replace Alabama Racing and Tri-State, who disbanded their St. Petersburg operations Friday. Lester Raines kennel also is part of the new season. After leaving Derby Lane 4-1/2 years ago, Lester Raines returned on May 15 to fill the spot vacated by McAllister Racing kennel.

The other change involves Pauline

O’Donnell kennel, which has been renamed Steubenville kennel. The operation carries the same stock with regular kennel manager-trainer John Graham. Mrs. O’Donnell, 84, of Miami Lakes, died on Feb. 7. “(The new kennels) with provide us with steady numbers of greyhounds and quality,’’ Robison said. “It will make everything a little bit more competitive at the top (of the standings).’’

More than 1,000 greyhounds make up the 17 kennels at Derby Lane.

Clear The Way Kennels is owned by David Peck and his wife, Janele, from Stephenville, Texas.

Jay Rangel of Abilene, Kan., is the operator for Rangel kennel. The three individuals are breeders.

“Rangel has run dogs here, and Peck (has run at Derby Lane) a little,’’ Robison said. “Peck has been running at Wheeling (Island in West Virginia), Southland (Park in West Memphis, Ark.), Texas, and Iowa.’’

Raines, also a breeder, is one of the industry’s top dog men from Charleston, W.Va. He won his only Derby Lane kennel title in the July-to-December meet in 2010.

Derby Lane’s 2016-17 season concluded Friday.

Cal Holland, president of the Tampa Bay Greyhound Association, dominated the January-to-June meet. Holland’s operation captured its first kennel championship at the St.

Petersburg track, defeating defending champion Nova kennel, 242-231. Holland also had the top dog with 550-yard speedster Rt’s Bo Jangles, who finished with a 20-17 win advantage of Imark Keefer of Abernathy kennel.

Holland’s Somerset Roy had the meet’s best 660 clocking at 37.03 seconds.

John Valazquez of Henry Parker’s Capabal kennel had the fastest 550 time at 30.13 seconds.

Crossland to be Honored at Fall Banquet

Greyhound breeder, owner and adoption champion, Bob Crossland, will be honored at the Wednesday night banquet during this year’s Fall meet. Bob has been a 35 plus year member of the NGA and has raised some quality greyhounds on his Missouri farm over the years and been a staple at the semi-annual meets. He may also be as well known for his dedication and hard work towards greyhound adoption as he is in racing circles.

Tickets for the banquet, which will be held on Wednesday, October 11 at 6:30 PM at the Abilene Elk’s Club, are on sale now through the NGA office.

Holland Captures Kennel Title

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – New dogs, new

employees, and a new place.

First place for Cal Holland, whose first career Derby Lane kennel title in the recent January-toJune campaign capped a phenomenal meet for the 72-year-old dog man.

“It was a great meet,’’ said Holland, owner of Cal Holland kennel and Tampa Bay Greyhound Association president.

“The dogs ran fantastic, and we had two green (helpers).’’

Holland hit the exacta at Derby Lane’s 206-performance meet.

Not only did his kennel hold off defending champion Nova 242-231 for the win crown, Holland also had the top dog in Rt’s Bo Jangles, whose 20 victories were three more than Imark Keefer of Abernathy kennel. He was Holland’s first top dog since Kentucky Fire in 2011.

Holland’s Somerset Roy also clocked the meet’s best 660-yard time of 37.03 seconds, and his Kentucky Kat was the meet’s thirdbest winner with 16.

Kentucky Kat, who won Derby Lane’s premier 550yard stakes, the $64,000 Sprint Classic on March 4, led the standings most of the way until she was sidelined in early June with a shoulder issue. She returned July 15. “(Kentucky Kat) should have been the win leader, but I had to pull her off (because of the injury),’’ Holland said.

Winning a kennel

championship is something Holland did not see coming.

“I never expected anything, because (of the way) we ended up the (previous) season,’’ he said.

Cal Holland kennel struggled in 2016, ending both six-month meets in 13th place and at least 122 wins behind the eventual champion. Since finishing fourth in the two 2013 meets, Cal Holland had never placed higher than eighth in six ensuing meets – losing by an average of 107 wins.

At the recently concluded meet, the operation won 14.5 percent of its starts, and 48.7 percent of its greyhounds ran in the money with top-four finishes. Eighty percent of the dogs were supplied by owners Don Godby of Eaton, Colo.; and Nick DeSalvo and son-inlaw Randy Toler, both of Penrose Colo.

Holland also had to mentor two new young employees: Rob Beiswanger and Brianna Heller. Beiswanger, the grandson to Gladys Holland – Cal’s wife – had never seen a greyhound until 2016. Heller is a former Derby Lane leadout. Gladys Holland handles the kennel books and the operation’s website. “(Greyhound racing) is (Cal’s) world,’’ Gladys Holland said. “He was born into it, he lives it (and) he absolutely loves the dogs.’’

Cal Holland, who splits time in Hernando Beach and St. Petersburg, raced at Derby Lane in the 1980s. He left the area for stints in Colorado, Kansas and Wisconsin before returning in 1993.

“It’s nice to see Cal win (the title),’’ Derby Lane secretary of racing Les Robison said. “He’s one of the guys who’s been here the longest. He had a very good meet. He semiretired, and came back. Since then, his dogs have been flying around the track.’’

Derby Lane Top Dog

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Conversation among the leadouts is lively minutes moments before they place the greyhounds into the starting box for the upcoming race at Derby Lane.

RT’s Bo Jangles seems oblivious to all the chatter.

He hardly bats an eye, staring at the tote board on the backstretch.

The red blanket that he is wearing bears several symbolisms on this particular evening: the number of his starting box, his eventual finish in the race, and his ranking for the January-to-June meet – all No. 1.

“I never thought that much of him (at first),’’ kennel owner Cal Holland said. “But after he started winning in Grade C and B, and got into A, he took off.

He is an amazing dog.’’

Manny and Penrose Karrie, closed the 206-performance meet with a flourish to claim his first top dog title. The 550-yard specialist won his final six starts by a combined 37 lengths to capture the championship by a 20-17 margin over Imark Keefer of Abernathy kennel. Rt’s Bo Jangles made 36 starts. He led Cal Holland kennel to its first win championship, and became the operation’s first meet win leader since Kentucky Fire in 2011.

Owned by Randy Toler of Penrose, Colo., RT’s Bo Jangles caught fire in the second half of the meet.

He won 12 of his final 15 starts, and overtook kennelmate Kentucky Kat after she was sidelined in early June with a shoulder injury. Kentucky Kat, winner of the $64,000 Sprint Classic on March 4, wound up third in the standings with 16 victories. “(RT’s Bo Jangles) is just a wonderful kennel dog,’’ Holland said.

“He never causes any problems. We call him ‘Velcro,’ because when Gladys (Holland’s wife) is in the kennel, he won’t leave her side.’’

The 69-pound greyhound has shown a propensity to overwhelm his opponents. Seventeen of his 32 victories have been by at least five lengths, including two by 10. He didn’t win his first Grade A race until his 20th start in December 2016.

We stopped by and talked with one of the youngest volunteers at the park, 10-year-old Jackson, who has been dubbed the “dog runner”.

Gulf Greyhound Park has been gracious to let these organizations use the park to help shelter these animals until their owners can be found or adopted out.

Bayou Animal Services, League City Pets Alive Shelter, and the Galveston Island

Humane Society are continuing to work together to create positive outcomes for animals and families affected by Hurricane #Harvey.

The three organizations have teamed up to open the “Hurricane Harvey Animal Rescue Shelter,” now open at Gulf Greyhound Park Simulcast & Event Center, 1000 FM 2004, La Marque, Texas, to provide services, space and support for homeless or displaced pets related to Hurricane Harvey.

This location is assisting with the continued rescue, care, and reunification of these animals.

Friday, September 8th at 10 AM, ALL Hurricane Harvey related pets from these three shelter facilities will be consolidated at the Gulf Greyhound location.

“If you were separated from your animal, need assistance with your pets, or are interested in volunteering or fostering, we encourage you to come to the Hurricane Harvey Animal Rescue Shelter” As pets become available for adoption they will be transferred back to area shelters, primarily the League City Animal Shelter or the Galveston Island Humane Society while Bayou Animal Services continues their recovery.

Hurricane Harvey caused many pets to

be lost, left homeless, abandoned by families, or temporarily left for emergency housing with any of the above shelters and the three shelters have teamed up to create a single location to accommodate animals and assist with rehoming and care.

HSUS, GREY2K REVEAL “CLUELESSNESS” AS HURRICANE IRMA BEARS DOWN

The storm is still raging in Florida, and the danger to people and animals is far from over, but the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and Grey2K are already busy trying to exploit Hurricane Irma for the political and financial benefit of their radical agenda.

In a news release issued yesterday, the two groups attacked the greyhound racing community for a “lack of preparedness” in failing to evacuate dogs from Florida tracks. AGC spokesperson Jim Gartland said the criticism is foolish and unrealistic.

“Imagine dozens of greyhound owners trying to evacuate hundreds of dogs on jam-packed roads, making multiple trips to get all their greyhounds out, stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for 10-15 hours with gas shortages, deteriorating weather conditions, and

nobody available for assistance in the event of an accident or emergency,” Gartland said. “What could possibly go wrong?”

Keeping greyhounds safe in place at track facilities makes much more sense. Most kennel buildings are built of concrete block or brick, and designed to withstand severe weather. Greyhound kennels have crates on two levels, so that dogs can be moved into the upper row of crates if water enters the lower level. Where flooding is a concern, kennel doors have been sandbagged to keep water out. Back-up generators are in place at each kennel to ensure a stable power supply throughout the storm.

Tracks and kennels have stocked up on food and water for their racers. Kennel owners and volunteers are riding out the storm in kennel compounds with the dogs to ensure their safety. Many tracks have veterinarians on stand-by if needed.

“HSUS and Grey2K spend their time playing politics and raising money,” Gartland said.

“Unfortunately, very little of that money ends up providing any meaningful care for animals.”

According to the HYPERLINK “https:// www.humanewatch.org/ hsus-is-there-padding-itsbank-account” Center for Consumer Freedom, HSUS raised $2.2 million from concerned donors after thousands of pets were

displaced by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. An investigation by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman found that only about one-third of the donated funds were actually used for that purpose.

In contrast, Gartland said, people in greyhound racing are animal lovers who devote their time and resources to caring for their dogs. Some industry groups even help with displaced pets. After Hurricane Harvey hit the coastal areas of Texas and Louisiana last week, Gulf Greyhound Park in La Marque, Texas, offered its facilities as an emergency shelter for pets displaced during the storm.

The track is working with three local organizations to provide care for lost and abandoned animals until they can be reunited with their owners or re-homed with new ones.

“It’s about making a difference where you can,” Gartland concluded.

“That’s something HSUS and Grey2K just don’t get.”

Beautiful Tease: A different greyhound In late July, Beautiful Tease rushed home from fifth in the stretch to capture a Grade AA race at Wheeling Island.

Lester Raines Kennel trainer Joel Roden was stunned.

Beautiful Tease arrived at Wheeling in February and showed early speed in all of her schooling efforts and her first half dozen official starts as she climbed the ladder to Grade AA. Roden had every reason to be surprised with her come-frombehind effort.

“I was shocked. I never thought Tease by would come from Stan off the pace after Pawloski the way she broke in,” Roden said. “Tease looked like she would be early foot and short or nothing, but she has changed her whole style completely – a different greyhound. At times though, she’ll still try to go to the front.”

Rewind to early February – Beautiful Tease and her littermate sisters Roxy Is Foxy, Cashontheline, Go Pride Joy, Gonzo Girl Gone, Heska Holka and Jack’s Melody came to Wheeling to launch their racing careers. They are July 2015 greyhounds out of KC And All-Whistler’s Wrath and owned by Robert Crossland and Suzanne Blair.

With their youth and inexperience, Roden took his time with the litter.

“We didn’t want to rush them, so we worked with them in the morning and schooling races until they were ready to race,” Roden said.

Beautiful Tease captured all eight of her 3/16th schooling races, jumping out to the lead in all but one. Her mar-

gin of victories were by 10, 8, 6 ½, 5 ½, 4 ½ (twice), 2 and 1 ½ lengths.

She won her first two 5/16 th

schooling races by 6 ½ and 3 ½ lengths before getting caught in the stretch in her final training outing – once again all early speed efforts.

Beautiful Tease’s dominance in her schooling races did not go unnoticed by bettors. She was made the favorite in every race climbing the ladder and she did not disappoint by winning Maiden by 2 ½ lengths, Grade D by 3 lengths, Grade C in her second try by 6 lengths, Grade B by 5 ½ lengths and Grade A by 7 lengths.

she’d reach Grade AA pretty quick,” Roden said.

Beautiful Tease rocketed to the lead in her initial Grade AA test before coming up short in the stretch and finishing second. Next up was the Wheeling Island National Stakes in May, a futurity event, and the early speedster was cast as one of the early favorites.

In the first round, Beautiful Tease faded from first to fourth in the stretch and in round two, she dropped from second to fifth coming home. A fourth place finish in the third round still got her into the two semifinal rounds.

Beautiful Tease had a pair of sixth place finishes in the semifinal rounds – dropping her out of contention for a championship or consolation spot. She didn’t fire from the box in her last three races.

“When Kenny Lofton beat her to the turn in the second round, she stopped breaking. I don’t think she was mentally ready for it,” Roden related.

“It was disappointing, but may have been the best thing for her.”

Beautiful Tease was hot and cold after the stakes, but got back on track in mid-summer. In 14 starts from July through mid-September, she had 5 wins, 1 second, 2 thirds and 3 fourths – a 78 percent mark on the pay sheet.

The 2-year-old went to the front in two of the victories in Grade A, while the three other wins were in Grade AA where she came from behind.

“She’s changed so much in the last couple months. Now she doesn’t have to go to the front to be successful,” Roden said. “She’s rail bias. If she’s clean and they leave the rail open, she’ll be trucking.”

The six other littermates are racing in the top three grades at Wheeling.

At one point, Roxy Is Foxy and Cashontheline have reached Grade AA, Go Pride Go and Heska Holka have climbed to Grade A and Gonzo Girl Gone and Jack’s Melody have been in Grade B. “They all were inexperienced, but are now starting to come into their own,” Roden said. “They have been a nice shot in the arm for our kennel.”

The Best Feelin On Saturday evening August 5th at bestbet Jacksonville the 2017 edition of the bestbet Sprint Classic took place, and if you wanted

a race to watch, this was it. This final was loaded with talent, including last year’s winner, the track record holder, the best pup in the country, other stakes finalists, and some early speed stars that would make anyone work to see the front end. All ready to go in the 11th race, but how this race played out, would be something that no one saw coming.

As the lure ratby tled through the far Kelly turn and the started Clark box popped open in the 11th race on the card, the most unlikely of greyhounds decided that tonight was the night to break. Sure, several were close at the start, but the track record holder, Real Good Feelin, was the one that seized

the moment and took the early lead.

Making up for her rough trips in her last two finals, Real Good Feelin was here to run and that is just what she did. Pushing the lead from the get go, she took the early speeders to task as they went to the turn. In tow was Gs Humongous, and Lk’s Freestar, along with the super-pup Pure Sensation.

By the turn the separation had already started as Real Good Feeling opened up 3 full lengths on the rest of the field. Pure Sensation had taken over

second and was setting his sights on the leader down the backside. Lk’s Freestar was also in contention at this point, but soon it would turn into a two-greyhound race. Real Good Feelin continued to press the lead on the front end and it appeared that no one was going to better her on this occasion. But the race was not over just yet. Pure Sensation continued to give his all, and by the far turn he had chipped away at the lead just a bit.

Other greyhounds made moves in the backstretch as well and it was going to be a jumbled mess for the third best behind the dynamic duo up front.

Turning for home, Real Good Feeling was in complete control as she breezed for the finish line. Pure Sensation was not done just yet though. He dug in deep and gave everything he had for one last run at the leader before the wire. Gaining with every stride he took, that is saying something as the greyhound on the lead was the track

record holder, Pure Sensation closed some of the gap before they hit the wire. Real Good Feeling clung to her easy lead as she bested the field at the finish line by a length and a half. Pure Sensation was second, as he cut her lead in half over the second part of this race. Any other greyhound in the lead, he would have won, but still a great showing from a greyhound that has only 9 official starts. The show spot was highly contested and had to be settled by a photo finish. And both competitors came from off the pace to challenge for a spot in the money at the wire. Ww Mind At rest won the

photo over Mrl Bold Ego for show as early threat Lk’s Freestar had to settle for 5th at the finish line after being outrun late. Completing the field was last year’s winner Hey Hey Daddy in 6th, Gs Humongous in 7th, and Watch Me in 8th.

Congratulation head out to the DQ Williams Kennel, Owner Tina Williams, Kennel Owner Sharon Williams, trainer Craig Edwards, and everyone else connected with this fantastic greyhound. This win was her 60th at bestbet and her 85th overall.

She won 25 races at Gulf Greyhound Park and is yet another stakes win-

ner out of the stellar brood Need A Date. Hey Hey Daddy, her sister won this race last year. Seldom Told won the 2016 Orange Park Derby and the Holiday Extravaganza Sprint, and Need My Moneynow won the Daytona 550 race, and the March Mayhem in 2016. Turning four this month, she might be getting a little long in the tooth, but if she keeps running like she did in this final, there could be more races to win at bestbet.

If not, I think she might just have a future as a brood matron too. Good luck to her in whatever comes her way in the future.

Caitlyn Stoodard (the dog) Picks Up Consolation Win ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Seventeen days before she was whelped, Caitlyn Stoodard’s namesake made a name for herself.

Caitlyn Stoddard, a thoroughbred jockey at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, won with her first career mount - riding Im Charming to a score at 87-1 odds in his 15th maiden race.

Raymond Thurber, a resident of Vernon in the Florida Panhandle, had that May 1, 2015, moment in mind by when he named his Don dog in honor of the Jensen Baltimore native.

Caitlyn Stoodard hasn’t gone unnoticed, either. The 61-pound female, who entered the 86th edition of the $5,000 St. Petersburg Consolation Derby on June 30 without a win on the 660-yard course in seven previous tries at Derby Lane, captured her first stakes title on the track’s final night of the 2016-17 season.

“I’m not really surprised she won, but I’m surprised, because she’s not a real 3/8ths(er),’’ Capabal kennel assistant trainer Gudrun Scheider said.

“She is like in the middle. . . . She can do a 5/16ths, and she can also (run) 3/8ths. If everything is right for her, she can go.’’

Caitlyn Stoodard, a 26-month-old dog from a litter by Street Credit and Gmc Kool Kassie, is one of the latest Thurber dogs with jockey-related names to be handled by Capabal kennel owner Henry Parker and trainer Belinda Parker.

starters in a stakes championship race for the first time on May 29 in the $20,000 Remembrance – a race won

by Nova kennel’s Poweroftraction. John Valazquez clocked Derby Lane’s best time of 30.13 seconds at 550 yards in the previous January-to-June meet, and tied for seventh in the win standings at 12.

His namesake, Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, won his second Kentucky Derby this year aboard Always Dreaming, who broke his maiden on Jan. 25 at Tampa Bay Downs in Oldsmar.

“(Thurber) likes to name his dogs after jockeys,’’ Parker said. “We’re pretty happy for him. . . . He is a great guy. “(Caitlyn Stoodard) is pretty young, and we’ve been thinking about making a 3/8ths dog out of her. She is awesome around the kennel. (Thurber) raises his dogs, and they get more hands-on (attention).’’

Caitlyn Stoodard’s victory in the Consolation Derby required a photo finish. After rallying to take the lead from pace-setter Yolo Pink (Burk Greyhounds kennel) entering the stretch, she had to withstand a furious rally by Noelles Bella (Floyd) to win by a head in 37.85 seconds. She paid $12.60 to win and earned $2,200.

It was the seventh career victory for Caitlyn Stoodard from 27 starts.

“When she was in third place (early in the race), I knew she could do it,’’ Scheider said. “She had already drifted to the outside, and had clear racing room. (At the end), I closed my eyes and knew she had it (won).’’

IGA at the State Fair DES MOINES, Iowa – The 2017 Iowa State Fair, which ran August 10-20, set a new attendance record with 1,130,071 visitors.

Right in the midst of all the activity was the annual booth run by the Iowa Greyhound Association.

Located in the northwest corner of the Varied Industries Building, the IGA got into action Wednesday, August 9, evening as “my parents (Alan and Lori Hill) came down to set up our exhibit,” explained Amy Thompson.

Thompson and her husband, Nathan, along with Jody Phelps of Heartland by G r e y h o u n d Steve Adoption would be Sigafoose the main meet and greet folks for the booth, which was open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“We had magazines and pamphlets for the public,” said Amy Thompson, “but most of the time was spent talking to people.

“However the main show was the greyhounds that Heartland brought in.”

“We had a group of 15 volunteers who helped with the greyhounds,” said

Phelps. “The greyhounds were big attraction along with the warm chocolate chip cookies.

“We saw people stop, pet the greyhounds and come back. It got so busy that we put up a board with the greyhounds’ names. That was because everyone was asking the greyhound’s name and when we told them, the greyhound would look up at the sound of its name.

Phelps was happy with the chance to be at The Fair.

“People got to see a greyhound,” said Phelps. “We got a lot of positive feedback and we enjoyed seeing the visitors’ eyes light up. It was a good time for us to educate the public about

our greyhounds.”

Heartland Greyhound Adoption has been in operation since 2000, working with the Iowa farms and kennels to get greyhounds to homes.

“We are here for the greyhounds,” said Phelps, “check us out at www. heartlandgreyhoundadoption.org.”

While watching the public interact with the greyhounds, “I was shocked at some of the misconceptions we heard,” said Amy Thompson, “but it made it fun to bridge the gap of knowledge. We explained to them that they love to race and are well taken care of at the track.

“It was educational.”

“For the most part we had a good give and take,” said Nathan Thompson.

“I would say that the public was reasonable and wanted to learn about the greyhounds and there were five percent that didn’t want to learn. That averaged out to about one person a day that was really negative.”

“The greyhounds were the big draw,” said Amy Thompson. “People came back to see the greyhounds, so we had multiple opportunities to talk with them.”

Taxes and Finances Good bad debt tax savings

ad debts can be a two-edged sword.

The greyhound owner, breeder, trainer or kennel operatoor that has debts “forgiven” often has income upon which taxes must be paid. A greyhound operation that has uncollected amounts can writeoff or deduct those “bad debts” -– but only sometimes.

Who in the greyhound industry hasn’t suffered with tracks, owners, customers or trainers that do not pay. And, what about other uncollectible amounts such as: -- Loans to suppliers and customers.

-- Debts of an insolvent partner.

-- Business loan guarantees.

-- Capital loans. Naturally, a bad debt deduction for a loan made to a corporation cannot be claimed if the loan is actually a contribution to capital, -- Business loan guarantees, and -- Debts owed by political parties.

Bottom-line, no matter how hard you try, you just can’t bring an overdue account to zero. Even after friendly attempts at collection, you haven’t received the total amount owed and you suspect you never will.

At that point, you have a choice: Write off the amount as a bad debt, or forgive the debt entirely. Each approach carries trade-offs for small greyhound operations.

Forgivness or write-offs

Whether as a charitable or goodwill gesture, some small businesses forgive the outstanding debts of parties who may have fallen on hard

times. Debt forgiveness simply means the amount due will be written down to zero on the operation’s books along with some sort of note explaining the reason.

The greyhound operation may be able to write-off and deduct a business bad debt as an expense on its tax return.

Of course, the debt must have been created or acquired by the business or closely related to the business when it became partly or totally worthless. That usually includes goods and services which haven’t been paid for by customers. If the greyhound operation is unable to collect any part those receivables, the remaining outstanding portion could be a legitimate business bad debt.

A greyhound business deducts its bad debts from gross income when f i g u r i n g i t s t a x a bl e i n c o m e .

Business bad debts may be deducted either in part or in full. All other bad debts are considered to be “nonbusiness.” Nonbusiness bad debts must be totally worthless in order to be tax deductible. The greyhound operation cannot deduct a partially worthless nonbusiness bad debt.

Good bad debts

A bad debt is defined as an account or note receivable that proves to be entirely or partially uncollectable despite collection efforts. Obviously, debt that is not collectible is worthless to the creditor or it may become uncollectable because the debtor is insolvent. Bad debts are written off as soon as they are determined, because the greyhound operation or business does not expect future economic benefits and it no longer remains an asset.

A personal bad debt is normally not deductible and if allowed deductible by the IRS, would be treated as a shortterm capital loss -- limited to $3,000 per year.

Unfortunately, just because something may be labeled as a business bad debt doesn’t always make it tax deductible. A bad debt deduction can be claimed only if the amount owed was included in the greyhound operation’s gross income. This is almost never the case for cash method businesses (that means most of us who report income when we receive it).

Accrual method businesses, however, report income as it’s earned; if receivables have already been claimed as income, a bad debt deduction for uncollectible receivables is appropriate.

Business bad debts

A business bad debt is a loss from the worthlessness of a debt that was either: -- Created or acquired in a trade or business, or

-- Closely related to the trade or business when it became partly or totally worthless.

A debt is closely related to a trade or business if the primary motive for incurring the debt is business related.

Bad debts of an incorporated greyhound operation (other than an S corporation) are always business bad debts.

Business bad debts are usually the result of credit sales to customers. Goods that have been sold, but not yet paid for, and services that have been performed, but not yet paid for, are recorded in the operation’s books as either accounts receivable or notes receivable.

After a reasonable period of time, if attempts have been made to collect the amount due, but were unsuccessful, the uncollectible par t becomes a business bad debt.

Under our tax rules, accounts or notes receivable valued at fair market value (FMV) when received are deductible only at that value, even though the FMV may be less than the face value. If an account receivable was purchased for less than its face value, and the receivable subsequently becomes worthless, the most allowed as a tax deduction is the amount paid to acquire it.

When money is loaned to an owner, client, supplier oe employee for a business reason and the operation is unable to collect the amount after attempting to do so, it is a business bad debt. On the other hand, a bad debt deduction for a loan made to a corporation cannot be claimed if, based on the facts and circumstances, the loan is actually a contribution to capital.

Qualifying

If a greyhound operation or business guarantees a debt that subsequently becomes worthless, that debt too, can qualify as a business bad debt if all of the following requirements are met: -- The quarantee was made in the course of the trade or business.

-- A legal duty to pay the debt exists.

-- The guarantee was made before the debt became worthless. This requirement is met where there was a reasonable expetation that the debt would not have to be paid without full reimbursement from the borrower.

-- If received reasonable consideration for making the guarantee was received. This requirement is met if the guarantee was made in accord with normal business practice or for a good faith business purpose.

The value of worthless debts

Generally, a debt becomes worthless when the surrounding facts and circumstances indicate there is no reasonable expectation of payment. To show that a debt is worthless, a greyhound operation must establish that it has taken reasonable steps to collect the debt. It is not necessary to go to court if it can be shown that a judgment from the court would be uncollectible.

And, as mentioned, the deduction can be claimed only in the year the debt becomes worthless. Naturally, it is not necessary to wait until a debt is due before determing it is worthless.

Bankruptcy of the debtor is generally good evidence of the worthlessness of at least a part of an unsecured and unpreferred debt.

Once again, it should be noted that bad debt deductions generally aren’t available to businesses that use the cash method of accounting. To deduct a bad debt, the owner or his or her business must have previously included the amount in income. Since cashmethod taxpayers don’t report income until payment is received, no deduction is allowed for uncollectible amounts, even if the money is owed for services performed.

Recovering bad debts

If a deduction for a bad debt is claimed on an income tax return and later all or part is recovered (collected), all or part of the recovery

amounts may have to be included in the greyhound operation’s gross income. The amount included is limited to the amount actually deducted, but the amount deducted that did not reduce the tax bill can usually be excluded. The recovery is usually reported as “Other Income” on the appropriate business form or schedule.

Should property be received in partial settlement of a debt, the debt is reduced by the property’s fair market value (FMV), which becomes the property’s basis or book value. The remaining debt can be deducted as a bad debt if and when it becomes worthless. Should the property later be sold for more than its basis, any gain on the sale is due to the appreciation of the property. It is not a recovery of a bad debt.

Besides costing the operation money, bad debts complicate accounting. When using accrualbasis accounting (as many businesses are actually required to do), income occurs at the time of sale, not when it actually comes in. Because of the time lag as the non-paid sale becomes an overdue account, many owners, breeders, trainers and kennel operators go through various collection procedures, with the overdue account eventually becoming a bad debt deductible on the operation’s tax return.

To ensure the operation doesn’t miss out on a bad debt deduction, it must be able to show the debt is partially or totally worthless. What’s more, the tax law doesn’t allow a deduction for any part of a debt after the year in which it becomes totally worthless.

Records should be reviewed carefully to pinpoint any potentially worthless receivables carried on the books. Because of potential IRS challenges, all failed collection efforts should be carefully documented. Beware, however, this area of our tax law is tricky, so seeking professional assistance is strongly recommended.

WW Jimmythe Geek blossoms at Wheeling, moves to Southland There was little hype when WW Jimmythe Geek arrived in Wheeling in mid-April.

Four months later the Wayne Ward pup blossomed into one of the Ron Otto-trained kennel’s better Grade AA greyhounds.

In addition to Jimmythe Geek’s 18 trifecta finishes in his first 21 career races, the sprinter took runner up honors to Konomi in the $95,000 Wheeling Island National Stakes in May. He had a pair of wins and a second in his first four races against Grade AA company. by Otto really didn’t Stan know what to expect Pawloski from Jimmythe Geek – an October 2015 greyhound out of Djays Octane-WW’s Saints – in the futurity-style stakes event. In only four career races, he had a second and a third before breaking his Maiden and then won Grade C in his next start.

“Jimmy looked solid when we schooled him in, but he didn’t stand out. We had an entry slot in the futurity stakes and decided to give him a shot,” Otto said. “With only four races under his belt before the stakes started, he was as green as could be.”

The youngster was solid as a rock in the five stakes qualifying rounds – three seconds and two thirds – to earn a spot in the championship final.

Jimmythe Geek not only was the youngest greyhound in the final, but the least experienced as well. All of the other finalists were two or three months older than Jimmythe Geek and all had twice or more the number of starts.

“I was very proud of Jimmy … he

raced very well against a tough final field,” Otto said. “He held his own

against Konomi, a really nice greyhound who has gone on to race well in Iowa. Jimmythe Geek pushed him the entire race.”

Jimmythe Geek’s performance in the stakes final was an eye-opener.

“When I saw how he performed against Konomi, I knew the potential was there for Jimmythe Geek to become a special greyhound,” Otto noted. “Time will tell, but I think he has a bright future.”

After the stakes event, it took Jimmythe Geek six starts to win in Wa y n e Wa r d Kennel’s WW J i m m y t h e Geek moved to Southland from Wheeling shortly after finishing second to Konomi in the Wheeling Island National Stakes in May. The sprinter is held by Jimmy Jordan.

“I thought he would win Grade B a lot quicker than he did. Looking back now, all the races in Grade B probably helped him,” Otto said. “It gave him more experience to learn and grow up.”

Jimmythe Geek followed up his 4 ½-length Grade B victory with wins in Grade A by a length and Grade AA by 6 ½ lengths. He pulled away in the stretch in both his Grade B and AA races, while coming from second in the stretch to capture Grade A. Overall, Jimmythe Geek had 6 wins, 7 seconds and 5 thirds in his first 21 career races.

The 21-month-old rail runner is more of a finisher than a breaker.

“He doesn’t have a huge break, but has improved his start lately. He holds

his own rushing to the first turn,” Otto

The Beginning Some superstars you know are bound to be great right away. It wasn’t like that with Janice, or “AJ” as her close friends like to call her. She was eliminated in qualifying for the 2016 Labor Day Puppy Stakes and it took her almost four months to make it to Grade A to compete with Palm Beach’s

best talent. To say she was this potential star at this point would be a stretch at best.

Track Announcer Mike Jameson cleverly called her “The Weather Machine” in his race calls, referring to the Fox News meteorologist that she was named after. Fans enjoyed the emphatic calls she would get when she was victorious, which only happened twice in the first few months of the 2016-17 season. Then everything changed.

Winning And Twitter The leaves started to change color in October and the temps were dropping. In the blink of an eye, Dean started to heat up. The wins started coming in bunches and suddenly she was a force to be reckoned with on The Royal Palm Sprint Course.

After Janice kept winning more and more, I started tagging the real Janice Dean on her Twitter to see if I could get a reaction. I got that and a whole lot more.

Dean immediately messaged me after the first winning replay post and said, “Holy moly, are you kidding me?” My immediate response was to ask if that was a “good” holy moly. She wrote back with an emphatic, “yes!!!!”

Then it all began: every time Dean would win, the Fox and Friends host would retweet the race with heart emojis and lots of exclamation marks. Her enthusiasm was contagious and fans around the globe were now hooked on this brindle greyhound with the dynamite late kick.

He’s My Man Classic Janice went into the $50,000 He’s My Man Classic in January as one of many favorites to win it all. This tournament is always one of the most competitive in the country, and this year was absolutely no different. Superstars like Barts Big Bang, Big Red Dog, O Ya Sunflower and Superior Tyson all were picks of many of the experts to win. Out of all the people I asked for our preview picks, I was the only one to pick Janice to win it all. I simply had a feeling something special was about to happen.

Janice got off to a rough start, finishing seventh in the first round, but she recovered nicely in the next three rounds with two seconds and a first. She qualified for the final and drew the 8 box.

She broke dead last in the beginning of the final but somehow found that lethal second gear heading down the backstretch. As they rounded for home, Jameson belted out for the world to hear: “As they round the turn and head for the wire, in the He’s My Man Classic, Janice Dean The Weather Machine! The forecast for today is a stakes championship!”

She had won it. For her team at the Brindle Kennel and her longtime trainer Alvin Rink, the win was histor-

ic. Their team had been searching for a leader in what seemed like forever and they finally had it with Janice.

Fox And Friends The hype around this greyhound was really becoming unprecedented. Any picture or story we posted was getting liked by people numbering in the thousands. After posting about her in February, my phone alerted me of a message.

The real Janice Dean texted me during the $50,000 Derby tournament and said they were going to do a piece on her namesake on the hit morning show Fox and Friends. A positive story about greyhound racing on national television? Please. That hadn’t happened since 1996, with the Great American Futurity at The Woodlands broadcast on ESPN. I was hopeful but hesitant.

Then it happened: on Monday, February 13th, the story was broadcast. They showed a replay of Janice winning by a country mile in the second round of the Derby. They also showed a picture of Janice’s team giving her smooches on the winning podium after her Classic victory. Janice even gave me a shout out! Amazing doesn’t seem to put into words how the greyhound community felt after this story broke.

Even Janice’s mom in Oklahoma was tuned in!

Derby Now came the second leg of the Triple Crown. The 660-yard Derby, which is considered by many around the country as one of the most prestigious titles in all of greyhound racing with its rich history at Palm Beach.

Through all of this, Janice’s trainer was dealing with personal heartbreak.

His longtime wife Carol passed away shortly after the He’s My Man triumph.

Rink decided to carry on with this run with Janice, even through this tragedy. A remarkable feat to say the least.

Janice naturally fit the longer course with her late speed afterburners she possessed. She romped through qualifying and drew the 1 hole for the Final, right next to arch rival Fraulein Morgan. The Final would be one for the ages: Rink was overcome with emotion after the victory: “I dedicated all these races to my late wife. She loved Janice Dean. She was riding her all the way down the backstretch.”

Triple Crown Hopeful After the Derby, this now setup Janice to do the unthinkable--win the Triple Crown of the Big Three Stakes Tournament. This had only been done once in history at Palm Beach in 2003 with Jawa Leonas Best. That was a different time, though. Before social media, before “instant news”. Janice’s story was much, much bigger.

During the lead-up to the $50,000 St. Pat’s Final, you heard other team owners and trainers openly rooting for Janice Dean to win it. Everybody knew that this greyhound was doing something special and historical, and it would be gigantic for the game if she was actually able to pull this off.

Janice drew the 7 box with the world

watching. In what was one of the most watched stakes finals in the sport’s history, Fraulein Morgan won a thriller by just 0.01 seconds while Dean finished fourth. The magic carpet ride was over.

Retirement After the St. Pat’s Final, Dean transferred back over the 660-yard Pat C Rendezvous Course. You could tell that she was ready for a break after her Triple Crown run and on April 21st, her owners decided to give her a rest.

After months of hanging out in the South Florida sunshine, Janice and her team said enough was enough. In mid-July, Dean headed home to begin the next stage of her life in the Sooner State, which certainly will include future fast little “Janices” running around Palm Beach’s oval once again.

Impact She gave the sport of greyhound racing hope and a hero. She gave me a whole new audience and followers who were now crazy about the game. She gave Palm Beach a superstar and made the season one that had memories that will last a lifetime. She made a fan out

of a meteorologist who couldn’t get enough of her favorite four legged athlete. She gave a grieving trainer something to feel great about even while dealing with an unimaginable loss.

This career by Janice Dean was so much more than just a greyhound on a winning tear. She will be talked about for generations, and has set the bar to an unbelievable height for all others to try and achieve. Her story could be made into a Hollywood movie with how many story lines went into it-that’s how good it really was.

Thank you Janice. You were truly a marvel to watch, cover, and be a fan of.

Derby night crowd treated to a shot of “Gin” As is the typical saying goes when you get to the championship race of a major stakes, “anything can happen”. But even trainer Bill Nihan wasn’t quite expecting what occurred in the finals of the $120,000 Southland Derby the evening the calendar flipped into July. “I wasn’t giving him

much of a shot to get the front with all that early speed to his inside”, exclaimed Bill. Mr. Nihan was speaking of the seemingly endless quick breaking ability of the #1 BARTS GIRL (Charter Kennel) and the #3 FLYING WOLF PACK (Lester Raines Kennel) who also happened to be by tied for the qualify- Shane ing points lead com- Bolender ing into the evening.

Even #2 AKON (Plum Creek Kennel) had been known to “pop the lid” a time or two which the red male used to launch himself into the race scoring a win and two second place finishes when that happened.

All three of those greyhounds loved the inside part of the track too, which gave them a bit of post position advantages compared to a lot of the field that evening. And, if to the left of BAR GIN made his trainer nervous, he also couldn’t forget about his far right where AMF DIRTY TRIX (A Ray Kennel) laid in waiting. The black male had won three of four races in which he started in either the seven or eight post and since he was more than comfortable staying in the middle part of the track, it would appear that things were sitting just too good for the son of SH AVATAR to claim victory.

Many, if not all, trainers run the race in their minds plenty of times before the actual race runs. “What has to happen to give me the best chance of winning”

often goes through their minds. The common factor in all races, not just stakes races, is getting a good start and getting through that first turn “clean”.

In stakes races, where a lot of the greyhounds are separated talent wise by the thinnest of margins at times, this is even more amplified. It wasn’t that people felt BAR GIN didn’t belong in the field, but there were considerably more that felt he may be overmatched in this race to pull it out.

Yes, BAR GIN did have a stakes win under his belt. He won the Arkansas Bred Juvenile Division championship in the Festival of Stakes this past Fall.

However, it was also likely the most “watered down” championship of the nine contested that day just due to the small field size. He only had five victories all of last season as well, and those five wins did not come versus any of the top talent at Southland Park. All these could be pointed out to be signs of just a “young pup” who hasn’t fully developed into a talent capable of winning on the big stage. There are signs of that being the case as well.

The 2017 campaign, although halfway through, is showing a lot of improvements for BAR GIN. Before the championship race, he already eclipsed

the previous win total from last season with seven victories. Of those seven wins, four came against top “AA” competition and better yet, half of those top grade wins came in the first two rounds of qualifying for the Derby. He followed that with two solid seconds and looking back over his past twelve starts, only two failed to garner a paycheck for his owners John and Robert Hardison. It was hard to argue he was starting to find his own way and running really well.

But all that recent performance wasn’t enough to sway bettors his way.

FLYING WOLF PACK’s three wins during qualifying and BARTS GIRL’s three wins plus an “it couldn’t be any better” starting post position had gamblers fighting over who was the favorite in the race (both ended up just a tad above even money). AMF DIRTY TRIX was also getting “win love” on the odds board ending up at just 5 to 1 despite the competition. It all looked great on paper and as the greyhound were being loaded into the starting box the only thing for certain was a new champion would be crowned in just a few ticks more than 32 seconds.

As Rusty got himself into position for the launch of the Derby, the tension mounted as eyes were trained towards the rail to see which one of the inside speedsters would prevail and get that crucial early lead. BARTS GIRL delivered initially launching herself quickly from the box and had plenty of early room. FLYING WOLF PACK was not as lucky, just missing his break enough to where he was crowded in the first few yards and even longshot AKON failed to fire as well. BAR GIN surprisingly broke about as well as could be expected and was laying a close second as AMF DIRTY TRIX didn’t break as sharp, but still found himself in a good spot having

nearly the entire mid portion of the track to himself to work with.

The field of eight closed quickly on the pivotal first turn and BAR GIN used his nearly patented rushing speed to gain control of the race while AMF DIRTY TRIX nearly did the same and was right on his heels. BARTS GIRL was still in the race as well and a surprising early threat also came from #5 XKT RICK NESS (T and T Kennel) who was left alone to use his rushing speed to get into close position as well. The pack of greyhounds in general were bunched up pretty well going into that “race deciding” first left turn.

That is when trouble ensued for most in the race. BAR GIN cleared the turn on top, but right behind him BARTS GIRL lifted just a little off the rail going into the turn and collided into the side of AMF DIRTY TRIX. While the collision was minor overall, “TRIX” brushed it off and maintained his second place positioning.

But, for BARTS GIRL who is known to be a tad bit short in finishing speed, that collision was the nail in the coffin to her chances in the race. It became obvious as the race went on that she could not regain her speed once she offstrided a bit and she slowly started to lose ground.

The aforementioned XKT RICK NESS benefitted from BARTS GIRL fading back to move into third where he was pressed by FLYING LONE WOLF who smartly used the open space on the rail left by BARTS GIRL floating out to make up some crucial ground.

BAR GIN safely maintained his advantage down the backstretch as the field started to separate and stretch out a bit. AMF DIRTY TRIX was second in command while XKT RICK NESS and FLYING LONE WOLF matched strides in the battle for show with just one turn to go. The rest of the field was too far back to make up the ground needed to threaten the leaders and it become a two

dog race for all the money and the crown.

That far turn is when it became apparent that AMF DIRTY TRIX was starting to gain ground and momentum on BAR GIN as they both hugged that rail. A few lengths further back, XKT RICK NESS was not giving any ground up to FLYING WOLF PACK, even though the latter was latched onto that key rail positioning with plenty of ground left in the race. As the turn for home came up, you could hear the crowd elevate their excitement, especially those who grabbed onto BAR GIN’s amazing 14 to one odds.

BAR GIN wasn’t known to be “short” as they call it, but they couldn’t help but notice that “TRIX” was digging in even more and still slicing away at the lead.

The last forty yards of the race were simply what stakes races are supposed to be. BAR GIN’s lead was down to a single length and still shrinking as he lifted off the rail just a bit to force AMF DIRTY TRIX a little more towards the midtrack. It didn’t break his intensity though, as with every stride the lead was slowly inching away. It got down to 3/4ths of a length. Then a half a length. Then a quarter of a length.

And then, the bright lights of the finish line hit and nobody knew for sure who exactly won. Did BAR GIN hold on?

Did “TRIX” steal the victory away at the last possible moment? The Judges had to go to a photo finish.

When the dust settled, it was a good thing the race was 583 yards long for BAR GIN, because if it had been 584 yards he wouldn’t of claimed his second major stakes title of his young career. By the thinning of margins (a head), BAR GIN was just two one hundredths of a second better than AMF DIRTY TRIX who settled for runner up privileges. “I didn’t think he had a chance to win” trainer Bill Nihan said before pausing, “until I saw how well he broke. Then

I knew we had a chance.” It ended up being more than a chance as it turned out, it was reality, albeit by the slimmest of margins. However, championships and prize money are dealt out in black and white (and green) based on the official order of finish, and as the “OFFICIAL” light was hung, BAR GIN was able to finally let out a sigh. Will this be the pinnacle of his career or are there still plenty of fireworks left for this youngster? The upcoming Festival of Stakes will likely shed some answers.

XKT RICK NESS won the battle for show by a length over FLYING WOLF PACK who was relegated to fourth place. Other finishers include BARTS GIRL (5th), AKON (6th), PJ IAINTMADATYOU (7th) and FIESTA PODER (8th).

BUSSMANN-BALAKAS BOOKEND THE SUPER IN THE DERBY CONSOLATION B’S CAPECRUSADER used his pivotal red blanket starting position to edge his nose in front by the first turn and then never look back in winning the $20,000 Southland Derby Consolation during the “appetizer” race just before the big Derby championship event.

LAGRO CC NANCE (Magic City Kennel) was able to hold off a late charge

by SOVEREIGN ISLAND (Ryan Farms) to claim runner up honors.

Not only did the Bussmann-Balakas kennel get the victory, but their other entry, BOC’S COVER UP, was able to ride the rail home to finish fourth to round out the superfecta ticket which paid just a dime over fifty bucks for a dime base bet. Other finishers in the race included FF CHAMPION (Robert Thorne) who finished fifth, DEL SOL KEITH (David Blair Kennel) who finished sixth, MONEY CANNON (Magic City Kennel) who finished seventh and Charter Kennel’s VJ HIT THE BOARD rounded out the field.

As the favorite of the race, B’S CAPECRUSADER paid $6.00 to win and anchored a $1 quiniela price of $9.00.

His finishing time of 32.62 was about four and a half lengths better than LAGRO CC NANCE. B’S CAPECRUSADER is owned by Paula Balakas.

Sarras sprinters shine in return to Wheeling Sprinters Beethoven Betsy and JJ’s Raffle Girl have followed similar paths in their racing careers this year.

In March, both of the Steve Sarras Kennel racers moved to Southland Park Gaming and Racing after competing in Grade AA at Wheeling Island. By early June, both were back at the Wheeling oval.

“Both Betsy and Raffle Girl were racing in Grade AA at Wheeling so we wanted to give them a shot at Southland. Steve (Sarras) moves a by lot of greyhounds Stan around to different Pawloski tracks and is very good at finding the right track,” trainer Cris Ohler said. “The competition is so tough at Southland and unfortunately the track was not a good fit for the two sprinters.”

Although Ohler would have loved for them to experience success at the Arkansas racetrack, he’s sure glad to have them back in Wheeling. Since returning, the duo combined for 9 wins, 11 seconds, 5 thirds and 3 fourths in 33 starts through early September – an 84 percent mark on the pay sheet.

“Absolutely glad to have them back in the kennel,” Ohler said. “Their running styles are made for this racetrack.”

After being dropped two grades when they started at Southland and having a combined 2 seconds, 2 thirds and 2 fourths in 15 starts there, Beethoven Betsy and JJ’s Raffle Girl both went into Grade D in their first races back in Wheeling.

Beethoven Betsy nearly captured her first three races (Grade D by a length

and Grade C by 1 ½ lengths before being edged out by a length in Grade B). She struggled a little in her next six starts, dropping back to Grade C. It took JJ’s Raffle Girl nine starts to win Grade D but she hit the tri-

fecta ticket in every race except one (a fourth). She had the lead in four of those races, but was caught near the wire.

“Coming back from Southland, I think it took several races for both of them to get their legs under them,” Ohler said. “Once they did, they have really raced well.”

After capturing Grade C after the class drop, Beethoven Betsy had four straight seconds in Grade B before winning with a box-to-wire 3 ½-length romp. Then she posted an early speed Grade A victory and a second in her first Grade AA trip.

Four Included in 2017 Hall of Fame Class

hree greyhounds, Izz A Champ, Dodgem by Design and Wayside Carol, join greyhound breeder Jack Kahn

for induction into the Greyhound Hall of Fame on Oct. 12 during a 7 p.m. ceremony preceded by a 6 p.m. cocktail hour at the Hall.

Izz A Champ was named the very first Rural Rube Award winner as the nation’s top sprinter in 1971. A grandson of Hall of Fame honorees Tell You Why*, inducted in 1978, and Julius Caesar*, enshrined in 1988, the fawn male out of Tell Tom and Miss Ismay was whelped on Aug. 24, 1968 and owned by Dorothy Roban.

Izz A Champ began his racing career at Palm Beach Kennel Club. In 1970 he had a record of 33 starts with 27 victories that included winning four of four races at Daytona Beach and both matches he raced at Sanford Orlando; his record at Palm Beach

was 21-3-1. He won both the Daytona Beach and Palm Beach Inaugurals, was the Palm Beach Track Champion, and won the Inter-City match race series between Palm Beach and Sanford Orlando on his way to being named to the 1970 All-America Team.

During the 1971 season at Palm Beach Kennel Club, he won 27 out of 29 starts with two second place finishes; his victories included a stretch of 21 in a row. He again was the track champion and the Inter-City Match Race winner. During the two-year period, he broke the track record at Palm Beach four times and the 30 second barrier nine times; the final track record was 29.78. In addition to the Rural Rube Award, he was named Captain of the 1971 All-America Team.

Dodgem By Design was whelped on Jan. 15, 2000, the son of Gable Dodge, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010, and Cruzin By Design. The red male was bred by Rod and Sue Boatright and owned and raced by the Charter Kennel.

His career started in 2001 at Tampa, where he won Grade A in his 7th start.

Sidelined for over a month by a minor injury, he returned to win two straight in the closing weeks and finished the year with a 25-11-3-2-2 record. At Derby Lane he made the finals of the All Star Kennel Preview and won the Derby Lane Sprint, defeating Talentedmrripley and Kiowa Sweet Trey, who later were inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008 and 2011, respectively. The next week he defeated Talendmrripley again when he won the Matinee Idol Stakes. He finished 26-9-6-4-3 at Derby Lane.

Dodgem By Design then returned to Tampa, where he finished behind fellow All-American Ben Awhile in the Tampa Sprint Championship and ended with a 17-8-3-0-1 record. He made the finals of the Kansas Bred Sprint at the Woodlands and returned to race at Derby Lane, retiring in 2003 with a career record of 84-32-13-8-9.

Named to the All-America Team in 2002, Dodgem By Design sired six

All-Americans, including Ten for Tee in 2009, CT Buck Wild in 2010, High Noon Renegade and WW’s Dog Gone in 2011, and Optimus Prime and O Ya Billy Bob in 2012. He was the leading sire for three years, from 2009-2011, and remains in the Top 50 in 2017.

Wayside Carol, out of Rinaker and Lady Eve, was whelped on Dec. 14, 1968 and owned by Wayside Kennel.

In 1971, she became the first Flashy Sir Award winner as the nation’s top distance racer.

She was named to the All America Team in both 1971 and 1972 after winning the Hollywood Derby and the Hollywood Endurance both years. She also was the Hollywood Track Champion and was a finalist in the Flagler International both years.

Jack Kahn was born in New Rochelle, N.Y. on Oct. 7, 1909, gradu-

ated from Cornell University in 1931, and married his wife, Louise, in 1935; the couple had two sons, Bill and Jack.

Upon graduating from Cornell, he worked for his father importing silk, and later had careers in manufacturing, television, and the hotel industry. Kahn first became a fan of greyhound racing at Sarasota Kennel Club, and was persuaded by a business associate, Joe Rosenberger, to purchase greyhounds together in the early 1960s.

Mentored in the greyhound industry by Jerry Collins, who is honored in the Pioneer section of the Greyhound Hall of Fame, Kahn purchased more greyhounds on his own. After meeting Ed Moses, who was inducted into the Greyhound Hall of Fame in 1991, Kahn began relying on his new friend’s breeding knowledge and bloodlines. The two worked together to produce numerous outstanding greyhounds that eventually brought notoriety to Kahn’s kennel.

Two of Kahn’s greyhounds were extraordinary - Hall of Fame inductees K’s Flak in 1987 and K’s Broadway in 2015. K’s Flak was the first greyhound to be living at the time of his induction and received the honor alongside his sire. In 1978 he broke records at three tracks, Wonderland, Derby Lane, and Biscayne; the next year he won the Flashy Sir Award as the nation’s premier distance racer and was named to the All America Team. K’s Broadway won a rare Triple Crown in 1987, garnering the Rural Rube Award as the nation’s top sprinter, was named captain of the AllAmerica Team, and won the national win championship with 42 victories.

The next year he lowered the sprint records at both Derby Lane and Wonderland Park, two of America’s Premier tracks at the time, and again was named to the All-America Team.

Kahn’s greyhounds were not only excellent racers, but also continued bloodlines that still affect the quality of greyhounds being bred today.

Putting the Hammer Down DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Dubuque course at the Iowa Greyhound Park is 2,040 feet long and BS Hammer used all of it to claim the $30,000 Dubuque Course Classic on Friday, September 1.

“Stakes racing is fun and nerve racking,” said trainer

Andrew Owen of the T And T Kennel, “but BS Hammer is a greyhound with a big heart.”

BS Hammer, a 71 pounder born May 29, 2015 out of Djays Octane – BS Hip Hop, broke on top from the three box.

“It was good by to see Hammer’s Steve break,” said Owen. Sigafoose JD Allure (Stidham), out of the five box, broke

second and quickly overtook Hammer for the early lead. For most of the race, it was Allure in the front.

“You don’t need to be a frontrunner on the 3/8 course,” said Owen.

“Hammer has distance runners on both sides of his lines. He has bottom, he is not flashy but he has stamina.”

BS Hammer kept stalking Jd Allure.

“I felt comfortable when he reached the tote board (on the backstretch) and was running on the outside,” said Owen as Allure could not do any better than a lead of a length or so.

There was a second for a gasp of breath as BS Hammer slipped a bit in the far turn.

“The track was heavy,” said Owen.

But BS Hammer shook off the missstep and kept coming. Keeping wide in the homestretch, Hammer needed most of the final strides to take the lead and pull away for a three and a half length decision. The winning time of 40.28 seconds spoke of the track’s conditions.

The victory came on top of BS Hammer’s third round win and moved him to 20-4-3-3 for the season.

JD Allure settled for second and is 16-4-4-5 on the season.

Raisinette is 16-3-2-3.

BGR Dirty Shirly (Boeckenstedt) broke fourth and stayed there, finishing five lengths off the pace. Shirly is 17-5-2-2.

There was a drop back to Gracie

Lynn (Cooper Kettle), 16-3-3-1, nine lengths out in fifth place. Sixth was PG Dickinson (Xtrem Hess), 19-3-7-3, 14 lengths out.

The other two greyhounds in the final did not go to the box. Scratched from the final were Fightin Flo (Copper Kettle), 16-2-5-1 and Lattnerville (Copper Kettle), 12-4-2-0.

For the patrons, BS Hammer paid $7.00, $4.80 and $2.60; JD Allure paid $6.60 and $2.60; DS Raisinette paid $2.20. The Greyhound Alliance There are many outstanding groups associated with greyhound adoption. One of them is the Greyhound Alliance, a 501c3

Illinois not-for-profit organization who, through their Sunburst Project, is committed to educating the public about retired racers and creating loving, responsible, permanent homes for these beautiful athletes after their racing days are over.

The Greyhound Alliance’s Sunburst Project opened its Sunburst Kennel at Ebro Greyhound Park on August 1, 2011, with the goal of moving by retired racers from J.J. the track there and Steinhoff also at Pensacola Greyhound Park in Pensacola, FL. Since then, over 4,600 retirees have moved through Sunburst to 25 adoption groups in the U.S and two in Canada, including 652 in 2016. Along with this unprecedented success has come ever increasing requests from other Florida tracks as well to help their pets. The Greyhound Alliance routinely receives requests from track management, National Greyhound Association owners, kennel owners, trainers, and other adoption groups. With the Sunburst success and protocols in place, they have been able to step up and move these pets as well. The greyhounds are transported to Sunburst, where they are readied to leave on hauls after a period of rest, medical care, vetting, worming and flea treating that takes a minimum of two weeks.

Sunburst moves between 60-85 pets per month from various Florida tracks, which now includes Daytona Beach Kennel Club, Melbourne

Greyhound Park, Palm Beach Kennel Club, Flagler Dog Track, Mardi Gras Greyhound Track, Orange Park Kennel Club, Sarasota Kennel Club, and Sanford Orlando Kennel Club, in addition to Ebro and Pensacola. Sunburst is also helping to move pets from the Mobile Greyhound Park in Mobile, AL. Sunburst takes pride in assisting special needs greyhounds because of their established network of adoption partners. The large number of adoption groups means that special needs dogs can be distributed among these groups - and all of which step up to take them, on a case-by-case basis.

SPECIAL NEEDS GREYHOUNDS Sunburst Project has been able to expand its help and support for special needs greyhounds. They have established a network, utilizing their adoption partners, to help them transport, get medical treatment, and provide rehab in foster homes for a variety of conditions.

1. Vision Impaired This year they have taken in, directly from the tracks, four blind greyhounds.

They were sent to canine ophthalmology specialists for evaluation and were all diagnosed with Progressive Retinal Atrophy. PRA is a genetic condition for which there is no treatment or cure;

fortunately it is not a painful condition, but these dogs will be forever blind. All four have subsequently been adopted into loving forever homes that have accepted their limitations.

Sunburst has also seen an increase in vision impaired dogs with a variety of diagnoses, such as Pannus, Dry Eye and Premature Lenticular Sclerosis.

All of these greyhounds were evaluated by specialists, and all must take daily medication and treatment for their conditions. They too, all go into foster and forever homes.

2. Orthopedic and Soft Tissue Injuries Sunburst has been able to help six greyhounds with broken legs this year. All six were transported on an emergency basis to a canine orthopedic surgeon in Tallahassee, FL for evaluation and surgical repair.

These dogs typically require 6-8 weeks in a cast/splint, and an additional 6-8 weeks of limited activity rehabilitation in a foster home, then go on to adoption when released by the surgeon.

Sunburst takes in many greyhounds that have soft tissue injuries (such as dropped hind muscles, pulls and back strains), and poorly healed breaks (slab fractures, hocks). These pups come into the Kennel sore and lame, with poor use of the limb. Sunburst also gets a large number of racers with broken toes that need either a period of rest, or sometimes, toe amputations.

They are rehabbed in the Kennel, with rest and limited activity, and receive pain medications as needed. It may take weeks, but eventually they will be sufficiently comfortable and healed to leave on hauls to Sunburst’s numerous adoption partners.

3. Medical Issues Sunburst has to be prepared to deal with incoming pups with illness/medical issues. Most often, these are dogs with tick-born disease related symptoms/problems and parasite infestations (hookworms and tapeworms being the largest issues). They require veterinary consultation and medical treatment as prescribed to get them healthy enough to travel.

4. Behavioral Issues Behavioral issues are largely due to extremely shy and poorly socialized pups. They often need to stay with Sunburst for a period of adjustment, with their kennel team’s expertise in providing a calm, supportive environment and loving attention to help them gain confidence. All eventually move to adoption groups that provide that same support in a foster/forever home. Occasionally Sunburst also receives a greyhound with dominance/aggression issues. They too, remain in the kennel under supervision, and are provided training and support until they can move to adoption.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and correspond with Rich Ingersoll, the president of the Greyhound Alliance, on a variety of issues. He and his wife Jeri are wonderful people who love greyhounds, greyhound racing and everything associated with the sport. 30-victory racing seasons tougher to accomplish at Wheeling (NOTE: August marked 41 years of greyhound racing at Wheeling. In conjunction with the anniversary, greyhounds with at

least 30 wins in a racing season at the racetrack are highlighted).

In the history of racing at Wheeling Downs/Island,

greyhounds have reached the 30-victory plateau for a calendar year 48 times – with five of the racers accomplishing the feat twice.

Wheeling Downs opened as a greyhound track on Aug. 18, 1976, and the by first greyhound to Stan record 30 wins in a Pawloski racing season was Slick Genius in 1977. The last racer to reach the magic number was eight years ago when Kiowa Power Pak had 31 victories in 2009.

Local greyhound historian Robin Reed believes the competition at Wheeling Island has been a key factor in fewer greyhounds reaching 30 wins in a single year.

“I think the main reason for the decline in 30-win greyhounds is directly related to the competition in Grade AA at Wheeling the last decade,” Reed noted. “For years, there would be a handful of dominant greyhounds that everyone followed at any given time.

Today, the Grade AA ranks are so stacked that parity has taken over and limited the win leaders’ threshold to the upper 20s.”

The five greyhounds to reach 30 wins or more in a season twice are Friend Delilah, 47 (1981) and 36 (1982); Prima Gold Tone, 40 (1999) and 30 (2000); Casual Casey, 39 (1993)

and 31 (1994); Greys Beaver, 34 (1992) and 33 (1991); and Itsjustplaingood, 34 (1999) and 34 (2000).

Two pairs of littermates broke the 30-win mark in the same year – J’s

Susie with 33 and J’s Roxie with 30 in 1980 and Butter N Jam with 36 and Cheek To Cheek with 35 in 2000.

While Friend Delilah holds the Wheeling record for most wins in a season – 47 in 1981 – three other greyhounds have reached the 40-victory level. DC Jay Bird captured 42 races in 1990, Kiowa Day Jazz had 41 victories in 1996 and Prima Gold Tone registered 40 wins in 1999.

Two greyhounds posted 39 wins in one season – Casual Casey in 1993 and DB’s Dolcie Dash in 1998 while three others had 38 victories – DD’s Nelson in 1986, Stage Door Ace in 1990 and Rebel’s Daisy in 1983. Next in line is

Mega Norton Cruises to Derby Win ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Saying goodbye can be challenging.

For Derby Lane kennel owner Don Burk, losing Mega Norton was more difficult than usual.

“It’s bittersweet,’’ an emotional Burk said after Mega Norton won his first stakes title on June 30 in the 91st edi-

tion of the $25,000 St. Petersburg Derby. “It’s nice to win . . . then I lose him.

“This dog has been my pet. He’s got that personality. He’s actually very bland and you don’t even know he’s by there. Every time he Don comes in (the ken- Jensen nel), he just runs to the grooming bench. He’s just a great kennel dog.’’

The morning after Mega Norton defeated seven rivals in box-to-wire fashion – his first 660-yard victory in which he led every stride, and only the second time in his 74-race career that he’s never trailed throughout a race – the 25-monthold male from a litter by Djays Octane and Primed Az Mailie was placed in a dog hauler headed for Southland Park in West Memphis, Ark., to continue racing at the higher-paying track for owner Jeff Blair of Abilene, Kan. Burk, 57, who owns ABC Racing kennel with wife Joy (also the trainer), watched Mega Norton develop in the past 12 months from a green pup into a stakes-winning dog.

Mega Norton broke his maiden in his fifth start at 550 yards with a box-to-wire effort. He did not

win a Grade A race until his 37th start, and the 72-pound dog failed to make the final in three of his first four stakes.

Along the way, Mega Norton matured. His final loss at Derby Lane showed how much heart the greyhound had when he had to

finish at least fourth in the Derby semifinals to qualify for the championship race. Mega Norton entered the stretch in fifth, but rallied in the final 10 yards to overtake Mega Gee Whiz and earn a berth in Derby Lane’s second-oldest stakes race.

Mega Gee Whiz would be the last dog that Mega Norton would ever pass at Derby Lane.

In the Derby, Mega Norton sped first out of the No. 3 box, built a three-length lead, and held off D’Arcy kennel Distance Classic winner and 9-5 wagering favorite Ethanol by three-quarters of a length to win for the 15 th time.

“When he came out and got around on top, I was in shock,’’ Burk said. “He is not used to being on the front that early. My heart just started pumping and I was like, ‘Hold on, buddy. Keep going.’ ’’ Mega Norton was one of three littermates in the championship race for Burk, and one of four finalists for Blair. The win gave Burk a career sweep of Derby Lane’s 660yard races. His Mega Nerfetta captured the 2015 Distance Classic and the 2014 Holiday Distance Challenge. “(The Derby win) is awesome, because now we’ve won every 3/8ths stakes,’’ Burk said. “It’s just nice to have a nice dog (like Mega Norton).’’

The Scary part of Publishing These Days, Dogs or otherwise My nom de plume’s (McKinnon) first book was Moose Bruce and the goose published by Bobbs Merrill. The second book

was To Yellowstone: A Journey Home published by Holt, Rinehart and Winston. The third book was Down Under Jones. The first two publishers do not exist any more, the third was not a publisher in the traditional sense in the first place.

And so, (McKinnon. (Me, Maddog.) I went to Amazon.

The big problem with publishing kids’ books, is how does a kids’ book by get from the author Bob McKinnon to the kids?

Adults.

Editors, proof readers, copy readers, type setters, illustrators, authors, book stores, librarians, critics, teachers, parents. I recall a college professor who one day brightly said kids should be paid to go to school. When it comes to purchasing a book, most kids do not have an allowance for books: cut and paste, kids.

Watch a kid go down a row of books in the library: the kid knows what he is looking for, and if he doesn’t see it on page one or two… NEXT! An adult is liable to read half a book before he tosses it into the circular file. Maybe, he reads the whole thing, just to say he has, can’t remember anything, but it was a great read. FIVE STARS. Dog racing is a writer’s gold mine. You know it. I know it. Stories everywhere: farm, family, track, trainers, owners, gamblers, etc. …

EVEN DOGS. Think of it. DOGS!!!

Characters one and all. The trick is how to get this charm, this uniqueness, this comic/tragic stuff stories

are made of … into the hands of kids. ************** Some old bard in the Shakespeare era, Bacon maybe, said something

like, “Show me somebody who writes for fun, and I’ll show you an idiot.”

Little Elsie says, “The art of creative writing, IN ENGLISH, narrative, exposition, even the art form of cursing, is in trouble. And furthermore anybody who publishes on WWW is certified.”

“Thank you, Little Elsie, for your input. I have 28 titles on Amazon now, each has to be updated, but they are on there, and I have to agree. WWW? They (whoever they is) make mistakes. I did not, for example, write “Why Dogs Like XXX rated Movies.”

“I told you, you’re certified.”

“Who reads books???” Little Elsie says. “By that, I mean books.

Like drop in to the library, snoop the shelves, check one out and read it, cover to cover, something you hold in your hands. And then, the real killer, you have to return the book and that means getting out of a chair.”

“Maddog, yesterday I was shopping in the fruit department at the grocery store, and the fruit clerk says, I understand your husband writes. What does he write?”

She pauses, big time.

I say, “OK. I’ll bite. Get it over with.”

Little Elsie says, “Dogs.” “Dogs?” the fruit clerk echoes.

“Dogs,” Little Elsie repeats. “Dog racing.” ????

Little Elsie changes voices for the fruit clerk’s response: “Y’all down yonder write about them there dogs that pull dog sleds in Alaska? I read about them there dogs.”

The reference of course is to the dog sled race in Alaska that commemorates the 1925 Anchorage to Nome diphtheria serum delivery.

Little Elsie says, “I told him you write Greyhound stories, that you have published over 300 short stories and articles, a 20 minute movie, a radio play, four novels that feature the racing Greyhound. The fruit clerk gasped, said, Well I’ll be go straight to hell.”

I hit a key on the computer keyboard. Time to check the news. Hey Maddog, Nice of you to remind me of my dark period, my descent into hell, my gut-wrenching, mind-twisting, heart-bending battle. But since you mentioned it, I can’t guarantee that my reviews of any or your books couldn’t possibly put us in danger, get us extradited to the PDRK, sent to a labor camp, or forever enslaved to one of the child ruler’s nieces in the outskirts of Pyongyang. After all, when you think about it, all of my reviews ultimately point to a division of labor, which provokes a distinct, simultaneous democratic/capitalistic consciousness in both the protagonists and antagonists. Here’s A Book You’ll Want To Consider For Christmas Down Under Jones is a light-hearted satire with a common, yet often ignored message; never take yourself; your career, or life’s situations too seriously. It is one of those fun, easy to read books that you’ll want to keep on your bookshelf so you can read it again. I seldom read a book more than once, but this is one of the rare exceptions. McKinnon has packed so much humor and hidden innuendoes into this deceptively simple story that I want to go back to it again and again to discover what I missed.

Flyin Scrappydoo thrives on change Flyin Scrappydoo has found a new home.

Not only a new racetrack, but a new distance as well.

After arriving at Wheeling Island from Tri-State Greyhound Park in April, Flyin Scrappydoo had 13 sprint starts before Lester Raines Kennel trainer Joel Roden moved him to the longer 3/8th distance in mid-July. The decision paid immediate dividends.

In his first 10 middle distance starts, Flyin Scrappydoo had six wins – Grades B, TA and four in TAA – a sec- by ond and a fourth. He Stan quickly has turned Pawloski into one of the track’s better middle distance racers.

“I thought Scrappydoo would be able to go the longer 3/8th distance, but I didn’t think he’d be this good. He’s definitely been a pleasant surprise,” Roden said. “He’s been able to get out of the box quickly in most of his 3/8th races and taken nice leads.”

That was never the case in a majority of his Wheeling sprint races. He came from way back to hit the ticket in a few starts and in a rarity – posted one box-to-wire 7 ½-length Grade A victory.

“Scrappydoo didn’t break and didn’t have much rush to the first turn in his sprint starts. Most of the time he wasn’t able to get clear in sprints and found traffic,” Roden said. “Moving him to 3/8th, we were hoping he would get out of the box a little better.”

In his first two races on the backside, Flyin Scrappydoo had a fourth and a fifth – the latter start only 2 ½ lengths behind the winner.

“I was pleased with his first two 3/8th races. He stayed with the pack

and didn’t fade out in the stretch,” Roden said. “He ran decent races and tried to get out of the box early.”

Flyin Scrappydoo, a February 2015 greyhound out of Barcelona BossKiowa Lady Girl, had no trouble firing right to the front in his next two starts in Grade B and TA. Both races were from the one hole, which benefited the rail runner, Roden noted, and he posted back-to-back, box-to-wire efforts.

“Having the two one holes helped.

It was like he was thinking ‘I can go to the front,’” Roden said.

Bar Gin, Braska Dale, Barts Girl, Real Good Feelin

A

quartet of summer stake winners— three of them from Southland (which is only right)—headline this

issue’s breeding-spotlight column. Coincidentally, all three of the Southland selections start with the letter “B,” reminiscent of the late Ronnie Beckner’s “Killer

B’s” back in the day when his kennel was so dominant, nationwide.

Maybe not so coincidentally, all three are descendants of the Hall Of Fame female Buzz Off, who was so instrumental in the “Killer B’s” dynasty.

Bar Gin earned headline status this time around with his July victory in the Southland Sprint Derby. He’s an October 2014 brindle son of SH Avatar-Anarchy, owned by John and Bob Hardison and raced by the Dorsey Kennel. This wasn’t the first stake win at Southland for Bar Gin, who also won the 2016 Arkansas-bred Juvenile last October. His record at Southland this year, through July 21, was a sparkling 8-8-6-1 in 33 starts.

Bar Gin’s sire, SH Avatar, is the sport’s all-time money earning champion, and is now proving himself as a top-level producer. Unsurprisingly, his top sire line leads to Hall Of Famer Flying Penske, whose descendants’ success at the W. Memphis oval is unrivaled. Former sire champ Kiowa Mon Manny is the link between Avatar and Penske, with another two great Hall Of Fame sires in the line behind Penske—namely, Oshkosh Racey and Unruly. What a bloodline heritage!

Avatar’s dam line brings in the

speed lines of Gable Dodge and Molotov, the latter being the source of the aforementioned Buzz Off, whose son Blendway (one of Beckner’s best “Killer B’s”) sired Molotov’s dam, Mystic Rose. Jawa Leonas Best (Avatar’s maternal grandsire), a former stake winner at Palm Beach (and a son of Gable Dodge) descends back, through his dam, to still another “Killer B”, Bara Buzz (who also happens to have been another son of Buzz Off!).

Bar Gin’s dam, Anarchy, is a daughter of Kelsos Fusileer, who brings in another entry of Gable Dodge. In Anarchy’s dam line, you’ll find Booter Jim, who was still another son of Buzz Off (by BJ’s Justin).

Double entries of Gable Dodge and She’s A Natural (the latter appearing really close-up behind Mon Manny) lead the more recent linebreeding behind Bar Gin. Also doubled up are HB’s Commander and Trouper Zeke.

Showing up three times in the moredistant pedigree are BJ’s Justin and, of course, Buzz Off. Six entries of K’s Flak are worthy of mention (along with 10 of Flak’s sire, Onie Jones), five of

those six behind SH Avatar). There are 57 entries of the immortal Tell You Why* in the very distant corners of the pedigree—which, according to Greyhound-Data, ranks third highest in the percentage of linebreeding composition, despite being so far back in Bar Gin’s pedigree.

SH Avatar enjoyed further success as a sire at Southland this summer, producing still another big stake winner, Braska Dale, who captured the Southland Razorback Classic in June.

Owned by Bill and Jill Elliott (long known for their “Braska” prefix), Braska Dale has been a top AA and stake racer for the last two years at Southland. He finished second to Oshkosh Kid in the 3/8 Festival Of Stakes event last October, and his 2016 record at Southland was 12-17-10-4 in 55 starts. His Razorback win raised his record to 8-5-3-3 in 26 outings at that point in 2017.

Dale’s win was another big feather in the cap of Avatar, who, as a sprinter, is now producing both sprint and distance stake winners at the nation’s premier oval—much like his four male-line predecessors (Kiowa Mon Manny, Flying Penske, Oshkosh Racey and Unruly) did nationwide in their respective eras.

Braska Dale, a black male whelped in February 2014, is out of Braska Daiquiri, a Dodgem By Design daughter. That gives Braska Dale the exact same Gable Dodge linebreeding (and in the same brackets!) we found behind Bar Gin. Daiquiri’s dam, BD’s Fadalla, was by Oshkosh Slammer, thus giving

a second entry of Racey to Dale.

Fadalla’s dam, Sally’s Marie, was by Buzz Around—yes, another “Killer B” out of Buzz Off. In the very anchor dam line you find Sleepy Sally, who was by Highway Robber-Pat Jackson (she having been a sister to the great John Denton, out of Monalee Wonder* and the great dam, Prides Rule).

Aside from the Gable Dodge, Racey and She’s A Natural linebreeding already mentioned, Braska Dale boasts three entries of Dutch Bahama, Unruly and, of course, Buzz Off. The 55 Tell You Why* entries ranks third strongest (just as it did with Bar Gin) in the linebreeding impact chart provided by Greyhound-Data.

Our third Southland selection is Barts Girl, a black female whelped June 2014, out of Trent Lee-Barts Companion, bred and owned by Rick Bartley and raced by Charter Kennel.

Here’s a perennial stake racer at Southland, capable of winning against the best at the track at either 5/16 or 3/8. An also-ran in both stake wins by Braska Dale and Bar Gin (outlined above), Barts Girl captured the Chris Chance Memorial in July. She was also a runnerup in the 2016 St. Pete Derby, and her record at Southland this year through Aug. 26 was an impressive 16-12-3-3 in 40 outings.

It’s a bit of a surprise that Barts Girl breaks away from the Southland pattern of descending from the Penske line. Instead, she’s from three major sprint lines: Brett Lee, Gable Dodge (whose dad Wigwam Wag appears twice in the first four generations) and the brothers Molotov and Mankato (who also appear in the fourth and third generation, respectively).

Trent Lee, with his Brett Lee (Aussie) sire line, continues to be a refreshing partial outcross to much of our ultra-intensified U.S. lines (i.e., Penske, Dodge, Commander, etc.), and long ago stamped himself as a quality sire (think of his superstar AllAmerica Seldom Told). dam line of D’s Kim (who’s behind last year’s Flashy Sir Award, Show On The Road). Barts Companion is tightly linebred, as we’ve seen, to the brothers Molotov and Mankato—and so here again is that doubled-up Buzz Off influence and the “Killer B’s” having a powerful influence on the three “B’s” spotlighted in this column.

Last but not least, mention has to be given to the classic dam line in the anchor bracket of Barts Girl’s pedigree. Rattles was by Pat C Best YetSherry Can Do, thus from the same batch that included Ranchette, Shiver Me Timber and Unique Idea, which has been producing stars for numerous kennels (e.g., Plum Creek, Herb & Karen Legg, etc.) for many generations. Beams Full Moon was one of those, along with numerous others who’ve been worthy of being selected in this column over the last 20 years or so. Unruly Thomas was the most famous of the Rattles offspring (sired

by My Unruly Dan).

Joining the two Wigwam Wags and Buzz Offs, along with the MankatoMolotov linebreeding behind Barts Girl are seven entries of Downing (five of them behind Barts Companion).

Bringing us to the final spotlighted stake winner from this summer—Tina Williams’ Real Good Feelin, who captured the 2017 Orange Park Sprint Classic. This white and red female veteran, whelped in August 2013, was also a finalist in the Orange Park Silver Cup in both 2016 and this year, and the OP March Mayhem in 2016.

She captured the 2015 Gulf Diane Whiteley Memorial, and is the current track record holder at Orange Park (29.95, set in 2017). She had a 34-7-64 record in 68 starts at Orange Park in 2016 and was 26-11-6-5 in her first 52 starts at OP this year. Real Good Feelin recently joined her half-sister Need My Moneynow on the 80-Career Wins List, and as this issue headed to press, she had 87 lifetime victories, with more expected to come.

Her littermate brother Hey Hey Daddy was also a finalist to his sister in the 2017 Classic and sported 42 wins at

the Jacksonville track in 2016-17.

From a breeding standpoint, the real big story on Real Good Feelin is that she’s another champion offspring of the nation’s top brood matron from the last few years, Need A Date. This is the same dam, when bred to No More Loving (a Penske son), that produced All-America Need My Moneynow in July 2012, and when bred to Trent Lee produced All-America Seldom Told in January 2013. These two litters, along with this more recent TMC’s Remedy litter that produced Real Good Feelin and Hey Hey Daddy, were behind Need A Date easily capturing the national Brood Matron Standings championship both in 2015 and 2016, and why she’s still ranked second in the last Brood Matron Standings for 2017.

This kind of domination on the dam standings has only been witnessed a few times in the 52-year history of the Brood Matron Standings (founded in 1965).

We saw it in the early years with eventual Hall Of Famer Kinto Nebo, who, like Need A Date, seemed to cross well with every sire she was mated with.

Another of that mold, back in the 1960s, was Michigan Vickey, whose success was built around her exceptional litters by one sire: Westy Colonel (a son of Kinto Nebo!). Then it happened with Flying Slipper in the early 1970s, with the likes of her Westy Whizzer litter (the Whiz Kids, still the winningest litter in history) as well as nice pups from a variety of other sires. Soonafter came Hall Of Famer Elsie Jones, whose legacy came with her crosses to Hoefer. We saw it in the late 1970s with Hall Of Famer Miss Gorgeous, with her numerous matings to Friend Westy (paced by such offspring as Highway Robber and Hall Of Famer Rooster Cogburn). Then in the 1990s, it was the aforementioned Buzz Off, with champion offspring by whatever sire she was crossed to: Perceive (getting Blendway and Bartie), Dutch Bahama (getting Buzz Around), Bara Ray (getting Bara Buzz) and that nice litter by BJ’s Justin. After that, came another Hall Of Fame dam, Representation, who followed the Flying Slipper and Buzz Off mold by producing

top-quality racers and producers from a wide variety of different sires.

None, though, has had any better career on the BMS than Need A Date—one of those rarest of females who seems to produce champion offspring, regardless of the sire.

Not to be lost in this short recap on Need A Date is the fact that every one of these classic females mentioned in the last paragraph—from Kinto Nebo, Michigan Vickey and Flying Slipper, on down to Elsie Jones, Miss Gorgeous, Buzz Off and Representation—every one of them is an ancestor at least once to Need A Date. (Kinto Nebo actually appears 15 times in Need A Date’s pedigree.) Whether Need A Date’s legacy can eventually match up to these immortal female ancestors of hers remains to be seen.

Real Good Feelin’s sire, TMC’s Remedy, was an outstanding stake winner at Derby Lane in his day. (Who can forget his classic match-ups against Flying Coal City?) Here’s that frequently seen combo of Gable Dodge with Oshkosh Racey a few generations back, with Lonesome Cry the link between Dodge and Remedy. His tail dam line goes back to another classic dam, the Irish female Ballybeg Pride (mother of Share Profit* and Evening Glamour*).

Need A Date has been documented at least twice before in these columns, when analyzing the pedigrees of Need My Moneynow and Seldom Told. Her dam, Nothing But Fine, needs special examination, noting that her sire, Grenade, doubles up Buzz Off (Being Brave being from that BJ’s Justin-Buzz Off litter alluded to earlier). The bottom dam line goes back to none other than Representation (with Fostoria having the regal Hall Of Fame parentage of K’s Flak-Representation). Good stuff, all.

And, as the deadline for this issue drew near, Kiowa Sure Task, racing for the Rader Kennel, nabbed the Palm Beach Puppy Stake on Labor Day for owners Rader and James Rosga. She’s a black female, whelped December 2015, out of Australian-bred sire Sure As (Bombastic Shiraz-Winsome Bluebird) and Kiowa Wildbraves (Kiowa Sweet Trey-Kiowa Wild Girl).
