to be a kind of research in residential modes, so it doesn't have a certain site.( Although I believe it will be more suitable in some warm places) The traditional Chinese residential building represents a kind of ideal mode of living, that is ,it emphasizes the close relationship between human and nature. In this project, I hope this building could mix garden and living space in a new type. In this space, these trees not only function as landscape, but also improve the physical condition of living, such as temperature and humidity.

STRUCTURE DESIGN (ABOVE): The main purpose of structure aims at introducing the

landscape. At the same time, it should maintain available interior space as much as possible. I hope I can find a suitable structure which could avoid too much space being occupied. However, it must display the landscape efficiently. Obviously, narrow space will limit the activities of people's life here and a roomy interior space makes more changes. So, balance is the goal I seek.

INTERIOR DESIGN The private and public space need to be separated in interior space. However, the traditional method--- the straight walls, will definitely damage the integrity of space. As a result, the private part has been lifted to the second floor and there are two spiral staircases which can be used as the connection between the two levels.

PROBLEM:

PRIVATE SPACE PUBLIC SPACE Some separations are necessary. However, if the private area is too large, it will damage the integrity of space via these walls and influence the displaying effect of trees surrounded by the columns.

MIRROR POOL

ROTATIONAL GLASS COLUMN

"Mirror pool" is the visual centre in the space. Water is a useful way to enrich the space. By adding a visual level which reflects the sky and trees above, "mirror pool" could stretch the scenery effectively.

The glass part of column could open and close. So they are also windows in this building.

Rainwater could be collected by these funnel-shape columns, and then it will enter the "mirror pool" after being decontaminating. The water could also irrigate the lawn on the roof by a rump.

The former scheme would make water reflect the source of light.

The strong light will damage the effect of mirror pool. So it must be hidden.

CONTEXT: This is a contest project of "2010 Xinren Cup, Interior Design competition of College Students".

The site is an old office building which needs to be changed to a hotel. This project contains three parts: the facade of former building, the ground floor (lobby and restaurant) and guest rooms.

FACADE REBUILDING: The main problem of this old office building is its inadequate daylighting. Besides, the extrusive parts on its facade will damage the whole effect. As a result, two steps will be considered: first, former windows must be enlarged; second, the building will be surrounded by a metal gird.

There are three doors in such a narrow space. Obviously, it's very inconvenient for people who want to go to the toilets and the office. Besides, the air there must be smelly.

CONTEXT: This course design requests us to choose a brand first and try to use related elements to design an office.

The site is one level of a small office block in China. So, I defined it as a branch of Adobe™ in Nanjing.

POSSIBILITIES OF DECORATION IN THE WALL

The large area of brick wall makes me associate it with old industry district and I want to add more "industrial elements" like graffiti. Besides, the chosen lights look like the facility used in factory. In my view, a software company is a "factory". It just manufactures another kind of product. So, I want to use these elements to emphasize the visual feeling of "making."

This site was used to be a garage and it was a part of Wutaishan Gymnasium. However, in recent years, the garage was abandoned and it was divided into several parts for business.

This is a course design of commercial space design. According to the demands of this course, we need to choose a commercial facility in Nanjing and seek its new possibilities.

A bookshop, Xianfeng, has been run there for years. But in my view, this bookshop is too common without any features. So, I decided to design a new one on this site through considering and analysing its environment and elements related.

SCHEME 1: Add these basic functions, such as bookshop, cafe,

shop of crafts, movie and music area. I distinguish the business area and staff area and the different uses of two entrances. Produce the concept of "stair of books" which could be used as the solution for the rebuilding of ramp.

Main customers: Youngsters & College students 1. Focus on the atmosphere and experience 2. Most books are in literature and philosophy and they are not popular in common bookshops or websites. All the books displayed must be selected accordingly.

3. The connection with music and movies is very important.

SCHEME 2: For displaying the feature of providing unique experience

in this bookshop, I add the concept of channel in the scheme improved.

This idea comes from the pavilions in 2010 Expo in Shanghai because I find most pavilions constituted by kinds of "channels" and it's a very good method to affect customers' emotion. The reading area would be divided further into area for choosing and reading through channels made by timber gird. But I haven't changed the channel's function yet.

This is different from the final scheme.

ENTRANCE(OUTSIDE)

SCHEME 3: After former two sketches, I connect these channels and change its texture from timber to lighting acrylic. So, it will be the visual center of the interior space. The channel is the area of music that provides music experience. The form of movie area has been changed. The former shop of crafts has been replaced by exhibition area. I extend the "stair of books" to the cafe and use it as the change of the material and height on ground.

FINAL SCHEME: According to the problem existed, I design a set of

"board furniture" which could satisfy the flexible transformation between exhibition and cafe. Besides, I make minor adjustment in the ramp area, which changes the shape of "stair of books". It will acquire more usages of space and function.

As many garages we've seen, it has a ramp connected the entrance and the place for parking. So, the ramp would be a transition between cafe and bookshop too. I use a stair to replace the original ramp and it's could be used as bookshelves at the same time.

According to the design strategies, this bookshop needs more space used for different activities, such as lectures, parties and signing tour.

As a result, this stair is multi-functional.

I've designed three schemes of staircase for this project. The first is a straight and simple. Nevertheless, the original ramp was designed for cars and it's much wider than usual ones. Besides, I hope there could be some places for customers to sit and read.

So, I made some changes based on the first one and formed two kinds of stairs provided different areas for reading.

CAFE OR EXHIBITION? This area has double-function. Obviously, each exhibition has certain period and it is not possible to hold an exhibition every day. So, I have to consider another possibility of this space. However, the important part is using an efficient and convenient way to change this space from one condition to another.

As a result, I try to use a set of simple "furniture" which contains two kinds of boards. They can assemble 4 (or more) kinds of furniture which contain tables, exhibitions boards, benches and tea tables.

Just like the book area, movie area is divided into two parts: communication and screening area. Various posters of movies are displayed on the wall. On the one hand, they are crafts which could be sold. On the other hand, they could produce some topics for customers to discuss and communicate.
