On behalf of the City of Indianapolis, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2015-2016 New World Youth Orchestras Season. This year marks the Orchestras’ 34th season of wonderful concerts performed by talented Central Indiana student musicians.

The New World Youth Orchestras’ commitment to developing the musical talent and nurturing the personal growth of young people through the rehearsal and performance of orchestral masterworks, both traditional and contemporary, is commendable. I thank the New World Youth Orchestras for supporting our young musicians and congratulate those who have been selected to participate in this valuable program.

Welcome to our 34th season under the direction of new Artistic Director, Adam Bodony!

What a blessing to have this marvelous organization, founded by Susan Kitterman, in our city. The amazing talent of our student performers and the work that our world-class conductors have accomplished will impress you.

For many, these orchestras are a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with other student musicians that have similar interests and passions.

Through the years, graduates of New World have gone to the most prestigious colleges, universities, and conservatories in the world!

Would you consider partnering with our Board, donating, or reaching out to family, friends, and businesses for their support? We need your help throughout our season!

This year we embark on a performance at Carnegie Hall; how proud we are! What does the future hold? I envision adding yet another orchestra, a European tour, and other opportunities to play for important functions in our community.

Please see the names of our hardworking Board members in the program that deserve much credit for their time, generosity, and devotion to our organization. This season we want to give credit to long standing Board Member David Wilcox whose hard work is beyond the call of duty.

Dear NWYO Families, Friends, and Supporters, Welcome to the 34th season of the New World Youth Orchestras!

This Season represents a markedly special one for me. Coming to lead an organization of which I was once a member is an amazing opportunity!

I look back upon my years as a trombonist in the organization, remembering always feeling a part of something bigger than myself. Showing up to rehearsal was a weighty experience. I knew full well that that rehearsal was going to be hard work and that my conductor was going to push me to my artistic limits.

As it was with my predecessor, so, too, is it with me regarding the pedagogy behind pushing young musicians: we push not because we mean to ‘breakdown’ or to ‘put-in-place;’ we push because we genuinely believe that young musicians are generally capable of more than they might imagine.

Again, looking back on my own experience in the New World Youth Orchestras, I was compelled to rise to a level of higher expectations…not out of force, but because there switched on in me a light through which I realized that I could be special, unique, and talented. Upon reflection, it dawned on me that I was underestimating not just my ability, but the impact that I might have on others. Slowly but surely, a New World opened up before me…a world in which I could be an active part.

I hope that as you listen to these young musicians perform, you see that active spark in them that was once in me on the very same stage – a spark that at any moment could ignite into a force of almost unrecognizable accomplishment, meaning, and beauty. Through the gift of music, it is our goal to help guide these young musicians down a path that leads to their New World.

About the

NEW WORLD YOUTH ORCHESTRAS SYMPHONY PHILHARMONIC CONCERT

In 1982, Susan Kitterman founded a chamber orchestra that would provide a unique, highquality musical experience for young musicians in Central Indiana. Under Mrs. Kitterman’s direction, the New World Chamber Orchestra has matured artistically, grown in size, increased its performance and educational opportunities, and received high acclaim from the community.

The 74-member, fully instrumented orchestra is now known as the New World Youth Symphony Orchestra, with members ranging in age from 12 to 18 years.

Established in 1991 to meet the needs of younger string players, the Indianapolis Youth Orchestra has expanded its size and capability to perform repertoire requiring full instrumentation.

The New World Chamber Ensembles is comprised of selected musicians from each orchestra.

In 2005, we entered a new era in New World’s history by expanding to a third orchestra, New World Youth Concert Orchestra, which serves the needs of younger string players seeking orchestral opportunities. At the same time, the Indianapolis Youth Orchestra was renamed the New World Youth Philharmonic Orchestra.

The New World Youth Orchestras annually sponsors a concerto competition with two divisions: a junior level for musicians through age 13, and a senior level for high school musicians between the ages of 14 and 18. The winners are awarded cash prizes and the opportunity to perform with the New World Youth Symphony Orchestra. The Philharmonic sponsors an internal concerto competition each season.

In recent years, the New World Youth Symphony Orchestra has performed with other youth and professional organizations, with exciting results.

Joint concerts with the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, Indianapolis Youth Chorale, Indianapolis Arts Chorale, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, and the choirs of Earlham College and Butler University have been extremely rewarding.

Since 1993, the orchestra has been opening its concert season annually at the Hilbert Circle Theatre, home of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. These highly successful concerts have featured the retired concertmaster of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Hidetaro Suzuki; internationally acclaimed cellist, János Starker; former Indianapolis mayor, William H. Hudnut III; pia-

nist Zeyda Ruga Suzuki; principal violist of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Michael Isaac Strauss; actor Clancy Brown; cellist David Darling; violinist Corey Cerovsek; Indianapolis Violin Competition of Indianapolis laureate, Svetlin Roussev; pianist and program annotator, Marianne Tobias; New World alumnus and Chicago Symphony oboist, Scott Hostetler; mandolinist Mike Marshall; and world-renowned trumpeter Allen Vizzutti.

Orchestra members participate in a variety of enriching activities, including master classes, section coaching, intensive rehearsal retreats and visits to collegiate music schools in Indiana. Butler University, Ball State University and Indiana University have generously provided coaching and space for rehearsals and workshops. Many of our young musicians also attend summer music camps and participate in concerto competitions, the Indiana All-State Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Side-by-Side Program, Honor Orchestra of America, and ISSMA Solo & Ensemble contests. New World also is well-represented at Interlochen Arts Camp, the Aspen Music Festival, the Meadowmount School of Music and the Eastern School of Music.

The 1995-96 season marked two firsts for the New World Youth Symphony Orchestra.

It recorded its first professional compact disc, now in its second printing; and in July the orchestra toured Germany, Austria and Switzerland, enjoying standing-room-only crowds and enthusiastic standing ovations. The highlight of the tour was participating in the Silver Anniversary of the Youth and Music Festival in Vienna, Austria.

In March 2006, the New World Chamber Orchestra earned first-place honors in the youth orchestra division of the National Orchestra Festival at the American String Teachers Association national convention in Kansas City, Missouri.

In May 2015, the New World Youth Orchestras entered into the next phase of its history when Founder and Artistic Director Susan Kitterman stepped down. Her successor was Adam Bodony, an alumnus of the New World Youth Orchestras, DePauw University, and Indiana University.

The New World Youth Orchestras’ mission is to develop the musical talent and nurture the personal growth of young people in Indianapolis and Central Indiana through the rehearsal and performance of orchestral masterworks, both traditional and contemporary.

New World is committed to developing artistic excellence; providing performance opportunities for talented young musicians; fostering a life-long love of music; nurturing the whole musician; encouraging leadership, cooperation, and discipline; cultivating appreciation of music and the arts in the community; and collaborating with other arts and youth organizations.

Concert Information SEATING Doors open one hour prior to a performance. As a courtesy to performers and patrons, latecomers arriving after the concertmaster has entered the stage will be seated at an appropriate interval in the performance.

ACCESS for PEOPLE with DISABILITIES Wheelchair seating is available, along with accessible elevators, restrooms, drinking fountains and telephones. Ushers are available to assist you both before and after the performance.

RECORDING and PHOTOGRAPHY Recording equipment is appropriate only at certain concert venues. Please contact the New World Youth Orchestras’ office for clarification if you wish to make a video or audiotape of a performance. Flash photography is permitted only when the orchestra is not playing, e.g. during applause.

Adam Bodony Adam M. Bodony is currently serving as Interim Orchestra Director at Purdue University, Artistic Director of the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, and Associate Conductor of the Missouri Symphony Orchestra’s Hot Summer Nights Music Festival. Mr. Bodony has also worked with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra (Czech Republic), as well as several high school, college, and community ensembles across the country. His primary conducting teachers include Leonid Korchmar, Arthur Fagen, and Kirk Trevor.

Mr. Bodony earned a bachelor’s degree in both religious studies and trombone

Executive Artistic Director performance from DePauw University in 2008 and a master’s degree in trombone performance from Indiana University in 2011 where his primary teachers were Jim Beckel and Carl Lenthe, respectively. He has pursued conducting studies at the St. Petersburg Conservatory (Russia) and Indiana University.

As a trombonist, Mr. Bodony frequently performs with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and can be heard playing 2nd trombone on their latest two album releases under the Telarc label, conducted

by Krzysztof Urbanski and Jun Märkl, respectively. Additionally, during the 2014-2015 season, Mr. Bodony served as � and Pre-Concert Cover Conductor Lecturer for the Indianapolis Symphony.

In 2013, Mr. Bodony was honored with the Beckmann Emerging Artist Award given by the Arts Council of Indianapolis to a young professional with exceptional talent and promise in a given field.

The John Melin Fund & The John Melin Memorial Chair The John Melin Fund was established in memory of the late Dr. John R. Melin, Indianapolis obstetrician, musician and dedicated friend of New World. Upon his death in February 1998, Dr. Melin’s family requested that gifts in his memory be made to the New World Youth Orchestras. The primary purpose of the John Melin Fund is to fund the John Melin Memorial Chair.

Each year, the John Melin Memorial Chair is awarded by the New World Artistic Director to an orchestra member who

exemplifies Dr. Melin’s love of music and service to the community. In addition to this public recognition, the annual orchestra tuition of the honoree is satisfied from the assets of the John Melin Fund.

An additional purpose of the John Melin Fund is to support educational and charitable activities of the New World Youth Orchestras. Please join us by making a donation in support of this worthy cause.

Susan Kitterman

Founder and Artistic Director Emeritus

As Founder and Artistic Director Emeritus of the New World Youth Orchestras, Susan Kitterman has been widely recognized for her dedication and contribution to the musical excellence of Indiana’s youth as a conductor, performer and educator.

Mrs. Kitterman graduated with distinction from the Indiana University School of Music in 1975, where she studied viola with William Primrose and George Janzer, and piano with Joseph Rezits. Kitterman credits Dr. Fiora Contino, conductor and professor emeritus of the IU School of Music, and American music legend Leonard Bernstein as her principal inspirations for the educational philosophy she puts into practice through her work with the New World Youth Orchestras.

Beginning in 1977, Kitterman served as orchestral conductor for three high schools in the greater Chicago area. In addition, she was the driving force behind the development and revitalization of string music programs in their 12 elementary feeder schools, which today are among the strongest in the state. Returning to Indiana from her home state of Illinois in 1978, she co-founded the highly successful orchestra program in the Carmel-Clay school corporation and directed both orchestra and vocal ensembles there through 1982, at which time she retired from public school teaching to found the NWYO.

Kitterman’s musical versatility is reflected in her interests and experiences, all of which have received high acclaim, both nationally and abroad. She has taught privately for 35 years, and has also had extensive experience as a songwriter, singer and studio-recording

artist. Her professional organizational memberships include the Indiana String Teachers Association and the National Music Educators National Conference.

Susan Kitterman founded the New World Chamber Orchestra in 1982 to provide a highcaliber orchestral experience for serious young musicians in central Indiana. The New World Youth Orchestras has flourished under her committed guidance and is considered to be the finest youth orchestra in the state of Indiana. Kitterman has masterfully combined her superb skills, dedication to young people, and high musical standards to provide this rare opportunity for both young musicians and the community at large.

As Artistic Director, Kitterman oversees all artistic facets of the organization with the support of the board of directors. As Arts Community Liaison, she is responsible for building relationships with other arts organizations.

As Music Director of the New World Youth Orchestras, she holds membership auditions, conducts rehearsals and performances, coaches chamber groups, assists students and their parents with college and career decisions, determines performance venues, selects repertoire and guest artists, and provides creative vision for the organization as a whole.

Kitterman was awarded the prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Joseph Kernan in 2004 and designated a Distinguished Hoosier by Governor Mitch Daniels in 2007 for her lifelong work with the Orchestra. She also serves as a member of the board of trustees of the Central Indiana Power Community Trust and is a member of the Fortville Community Sharing advisory board. Married for 37 years to Indianapolis native John Kitterman, they are parents of three adult children, all musicians in their own right. Mrs. Kitterman is a Master Gardener in the State of Indiana and lists cloud watching and reading among her hobbies.

Welcomes the Indianapolis Childrens' Choir

Since 1986 the Indianapolis Children’s choir has been teaching children the joy of singing quality choral music. Founder and Artistic Director Henry Leck, has created an organization staffed with teachers who are recognized for their passion and ability to teach music education to children from all walks of life. Nearly 2400 singers from every socio-economic background come together on a weekly basis and enjoy musical experiences designed to create a lifelong love of singing. In its 30 years, the ICC has grown from two small choirs to one of the largest choral organizations of its kind, with nearly 20 choirs and many music classes serving more than 3,000 young people from ages 18 months to 18 years.

The ICC impacts an additional 2,000 children through its Innovations program, which directly supports music in local schools. ICC singers have traveled to and performed on six continents and have performed in some of the world’s most recognizable venues and events.

The Indianapolis Children’s Choir is in residence on the campus of Butler University where the most advanced choirs rehearse. In addition, rehearsals are held at regional locations strategically placed in county suburbs to allow the largest number of children to benefit from the music program in the Everyone C.O.U.N.T.S (Community Outreach Uniting and Nurturing Through Song) program. These locations include Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Henry, and Johnson counties. The Columbus Indiana Children’s Choir is a cooperative effort between the Indianapolis Children’s Choir and the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic. Now in its 20th season, it hosts two treble choirs for children in grades

four through eight and has just recently launched a Preparatory Program for children in grades one through three.

The ICC offers programs that encompass learning for children from 18 months through high school graduation. These programs include: First Steps in Music, offering children 18 months of age through kindergarten, a beginning musical foundation. The Preparatory Choir Program, for 1st – 3rd grades, is a nonauditioned experience that further introduces children to music in a way that allows singers to explore their interest in singing. The Jubilate Choir for singers with special needs offers children not traditionally able to sing in a choral setting, a unique opportunity to explore their musical talents. Beginning, intermediate and advanced treble performing choirs and two high school division ensembles which include mixed and women’s voices round out the ICC program.

Presenting its own ten concert series, the ICC performs at premier venues including Hilbert Circle Theatre, Christel DeHaan Performing Arts Center, and Pike Performing Arts Center. Their holiday concert at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church is broadcast each year by WTHR Ch. 13. An active alumni organization hosts former singers each year during the Saturday evening performance of Angels Sing and this year is launching the first annual Alumni Choral Festival in early January 2015.

The ICC regularly appears with orchestras, professional artists, and ensembles of the highest caliber. In 2013, the choir was honored to sing for Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu during his public address at Butler

University. The choir has also shared the stage with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Canadian Brass, The Chieftains, Moscow Chamber Orchestra, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Carmel Symphony, Dance Kaleidoscope, Indianapolis Opera, Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, Judy Collins, Denyse Graves, Celine Dion, Sylvia McNair, Sandi Patty, Angela Brown, Marvin Hamlisch, and Barry Manilow. The choir performed the national anthem with Grammy-winner Kelly Clarkson at Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis. At the 2004 FINA World Swimming Championships, the ICC performed live the national anthems for all gold medal award winners. Additional live nationally televised performances have included the NCAA Women’s Final Four Championship Game, US Grand Prix/Formula One, the Solheim Cup international tournament, the Indy 500 Festival Parade, and more. The ICC plays a central role in the cultural life of central Indiana. ICC singers have sung for Indiana gubernatorial and mayoral inaugurations. Performances have included The Governor’s Arts Awards, the Indiana Living Legends Award Gala, the Indiana Leadership Summit, the Tenth Pan Am Games, President George W. Bush’s visit to Indiana, the Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial Dedication, Project 9/11 Indianapolis Memorial Dedication ceremony, the Indianapolis Prize Gala, opening and closing ceremonies of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, and more. In 2003, the choir presented Indianapolis’ first professional children’s opera, The Trio of Minuet.

Touring is a consistent part of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir’s yearly plans. Both national and international tours have provided exceptional experiences for ICC singers and families. The ICC has performed on every continent except

An internationally recognized choral director, Henry Leck is a professor emeritus in choral music at Butler University, where he served on the faculty for 27 years. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, which is in its 30th season. This organization is one of the largest and most respected children’s choir programs in the world. The touring choirs of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir have performed regularly for national ACDA, MENC, OAKE and AOSA Conferences. Additionally, the ICC tours internationally every year and has sung throughout the world.

Mr. Leck recently arranged and conducted the national anthem for Kelly Clarkson and the Indianapolis Children’s Choir at the Super Bowl XLVI. In the state of Indiana, Mr. Leck is the founding conductor of the Indiana Children’s Allstate Honor Choir. He also founded and conducted the Indiana Middle School Continued

Honor Choir. He conducted each ensemble for three years and is returning to conduct the children’s honor choir this year for a fourth time. Mr. Leck has conducted Mixed, Men›s, Women›s, Junior High and Children›s All-State choirs and festival choirs in nearly every state. He is a frequent conductor of regional and national honor choirs, including the ACDA Southern, Southwest, North Central, Central, Western and Northwest Honors Choirs. In the spring of 2003, he conducted the ACDA National Junior High/ Middle School Honor Choir in New York City and in 2011, the ACDA National Children’s Honor Choir in Chicago. On three occasions he has conducted National Honor Choirs for OAKE. In 2011 Mr. Leck conducted the premiere performance of a seven movement oratorio entitled “Melancholy Beauty” written by Bulgarian composer Georgi Andreev in Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center with adult choruses, children’s choir (ICC), Bulgarian women’s choir, Bulgarian folk instruments and the National Philharmonic Orchestra. For twenty-two years, he has conducted National Youth Choral Festivals in Carnegie Hall. In 2016. Mr. Leck will be conducting in Carnegie Hall three times.

Mr. Leck has conducted many international festivals including the Musica Mundi Tuscany Children’s Choir Festival in Italy, the Central European International Children’s Choral Festival, the Pacific Rim Festival, the International Children’s Choir Festival in Beijing, China and the Vienna Children’s & Boys Choir Festival with the Vienna Sangerknaben. He is a regular festival conductor for KI Concerts having done festivals in Spain, Austria, and Italy and has recently been named their “Distinguished Music Advisor”. He has conducted many times in Brazil, including the Curso Internacional de Regencia Coral in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil where he founded the ARCI Sao Paulo Children’s Honor Choir that he conducts every other year. He recently conducted the Tokyo International High School Honor Choir in Japan. For more than twenty years he has conducted a festival with David Flood at Canterbury Cathedral. He also has served as the U.S. Jurist for the 1st Xinghai Prize International Choir Championships and as an international lecturer for the International Symposium on children and youth choral music in Guangzhou, China. In the summer of 2013 he was the US jurist in Malta, and in 2015 was a jurist at the Musica Sacra a Roma. In the summer of 2014, he was a jurist at the World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia.

Mr. Leck has received many honors including the Sagamore of the Wabash and the State of Indiana Distinguished Hoosier Award. He and the choir received the Indiana Governor’s Arts Award which is the highest honor one can receive in the arts in Indiana. Recently Mr. Leck was named a recipient of the “Lowell Mason Fellows Award” which is the highest award given, by the National Association for Music education. He is also a Paul Harris fellow.

Mr. Leck is widely known as a specialist in choral techniques, the child’s voice, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, Laban and the boy’s changing voice. He has produced four teaching videos titled Vocal Techniques for the Young Singer, The Boy’s Expanding Voice: Take the High Road, Creating Artistry through Movement, Dalcroze Eurhythmics and Creating Artistry with the Male Maturing Voice. He was a lead author for the choral textbook series published by McGraw Hill/Glencoe titled Experiencing Choral Music and is the lead author of a new series of textbooks entitled Voices in Concert. He is also the editor of two nationally known choral series published by Hal Leonard Corporation and Colla Voce, Inc. Each year he has taught an international conductor’s workshop entitled Creating Artistry at Butler University. He has recently written a textbook titled, Creating Artistry through Choral Excellence. Mr. Leck received his training from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, the University of Colorado and Indiana University.

Mary Evers

Co-Director, ICC Indianapolis Youth Chorale

Mary Rinck Evers co-directs the Indianapolis Youth Chorale, the high school division of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir.

IYC boasts 105 auditioned singers from the surrounding area who perform both domestically and internationally.

In addition to her work with the ICC, Mrs. Evers directs the ensembles at Greenfield Central High School. Her ensembles have consistently received superior marks at the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Choral Organizational Festival, and the Greenfield Central Madrigal Singers have qualified five times to participate in the ISSMA Concert Organization State Finals. Mrs. Evers directed the ICC Hancock County regional choir for seven years and has worked as a staff member for the ICC summer choral festival for nine years.

Mary is a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association and is a Past President of the Indiana Choral Directors Association, the state chapter of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). Mary also is active at the regional level of the ACDA as the Program Chair for the 2014 Central Division Conference. She has also served as Interest Session chair and Registration chair.

Amelia Keenan

ICC Alumna and Soloist

Indianapolis native and ICC alumna, Amelia Keenan first sang with the Indianapolis Children’s Choir in 2002. After eight inspiring years, Keenan left Indianapolis to study at the Interlochen Arts Academy. Keenan graduated with honors in 2011 and began a bachelor’s degree of Vocal performance at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Keenan was an active performer in Opera and Theater during her studies at Oberlin.

She performed the roles of Ernesto in Haydn’s opera Il mondo della Luna and Shirley in Kurt Weil’s Street Scene with the Oberlin Opera Theater under the baton of Christopher Larkin; Caroline in Dominique Morriseau’s playDetroit 67›, and Andromache in an adaptation of Trojan Women with the Oberlin Theater Department.

After graduating from Oberlin this past May, Keenan went on to perform the role of Cherubino in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro under Maestro Ari Pelto with the Oberlin in Italy Summer Program. Keenan will reprise the role of Cherubino this coming February at L’Université de Montréal. Keenan recently began her master’s degree in Vocal Interpretation at Université de Montréal. As a passionate student of French art song, Keenan is specializing in mélodie, studying with Rosemarie Landry, Catherine Sévigny and Francis Perron. Keenan will perform a recital of French Symbolist poetry as part of the Concert Series at Lenoir-Rhyne University this November with pianist, John Cheek.

NEW WORLD YOUTH Symphony ORCHESTRA

Roman Carnival Overture, Op. 9 Hector Berlioz (1803-1869)

French romantic composer Hector Berlioz is remembered best for his orchestral works and, in particular, for his passionate study of western instruments. He was also a key figure in the development of program music-musical compositions that are intended to tell a story or depict something nonmusical, such as bird-song, a painting, or a poem. Berlioz stands out in this regard with the popular Symphonie fantastique, his well-known program symphony, which is a testament to his adventurous, innovative use of instruments and sound. In Symphonie fantastique Berlioz wrote with especially exotic orchestration; in addition to a full wind and brass section, the piece also calls for two ophicleides, an unusual family of bugletype instruments that are commonly replaced by tubas in most modern performances. Berlioz put his knowledge of instruments into writing in his Treatise on Orchestration. This work, in which he made a systematic study and analysis of Western musical instruments and their role and potential in the symphony orchestra, proved to be an indispensable reference utilized by composers as well-known as Mahler, Elgar, Debussy, Puccini, and Strauss. In the course of writing his Treatise, Berlioz improved and refined his own orchestration techniques and even revised his own orchestration of Symphonie fantastique as well as his popular

Harold en Italie for final publication.

The work being performed tonight, Le carnaval romain, was composed in 1844.

The overture is a stand-alone concert piece for symphony orchestra but is made up of material and themes from Berlioz’s first opera, the technically challenging and rarely performedBenvenuto Cellini. The opera on which this overture is based was born of inspiration garnered from two years of study in Italy. This sojourn was a result of Berlioz’s winning the prestigiousPrix de Rome, a French scholarship for students of the arts, including categories in painting, sculpture, architecture, engraving, and musical composition. The prize included a five year stipend and required the winner to spend two years studying in Italy. It is our good fortune that Berlioz took the lovely melodies of the opera and made a condensed version of sorts in the Le carnival romain, else some very lovely melodies might be lost to obscurity.

Arguably Berlioz’s most exuberant and striking orchestral work, Le carnival romain has become a popular concert favorite. The overture begins with a short, fanfare-like introduction played by the strings and brass, followed by the first theme which is presented by the solo English horn, accompanied by violas with delicate brush-like strokes.

duet from Benvenuto Cellini, is then presented again by the viola section, with a light accompaniment by the winds and pizzicato strings. Finally, the whole orchestra joins in playing this beautiful melody, with festive marchlike flavor as the percussion section is added. The second section of the piece is more lively, the stately long melodic lines of the previous section replaced by streams of notes in rapid succession

in quick, gigue-like runs. The musical material of this section comes from a later part of Benvenuto Cellini, a raucous carnival scene which provides the overture’s name. The work draws to a close with loud, fast, and energetic passages particularly noticeable in the strings, brass, and percussion, bringing the piece to a triumphant and exuberant conclusion.

Requiem Mass in D minor W. A. Mozart (1797-1828)

Mozart was a busy man during the late summer and fall of 1791, racing to fulfill a stack of commissions. La Clemenza di Tito premiered in Prague on September 6, and three weeks later The Magic Flute debuted in Vienna. In October he finished his Clarinet Concerto, and on November 18, in probably his last public appearance, he conducted a new cantata for his Masonic lodge. He died on December 5.

After all this activity, only one major work lay on his desk unfinished at the time of his death: the Requiem. Much romance and mystery have surrounded this work and its supposed connection with the composer’s own death; but they largely dissipate when we concentrate on the facts that we know.

In July, 1791, Count Franz von Walsegg, through an anonymous emissary, promised Mozart a generous commission to compose a Requiem, to be performed annually in memory of the Count’s late wife. Half of the fee was paid in advance with the remainder due upon completion. One much-debated question has been why Count Walsegg sought out Mozart, who was not known in Vienna as a composer of

sacred music. In fact, Mozart certainly knew the Count and probably the Countess as well. Walsegg frequently invited musicians to perform at his country home, and owned the house where one of Mozart’s friends lived. As a child actress, the Countess had appeared on stage alongside Mozart’s sister-in-law.

Mozart set to work on the Requiem in October. His many letters from this period to his wife Constanze are teasing, full of high spirits, love and affection -- not, as some tales imply, those of a man paralyzed with fear over his own impending death.

He was actively planning trips to England and Russia, negotiating commissions with Hungary and Amsterdam, anticipating a possible appointment as the Music Director of St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Nothing even suggests the onset of a serious illness until the middle of November.

In that month, a viral epidemic swept through Vienna. On November 20 Mozart took to his bed and survived only two more weeks. The Requiem remained unfinished simply because among Mozart’s many commissions all due on top of one another, it was the next on his Continued

list to complete. The autograph manuscripts show no signs of haste or fatigue in what we know Mozart completed himself. Right to the end, it seems, Mozart had no idea that he was soon to die.

Before he died, Mozart was able to finish only the Requiem’s opening movement, the Requiem aeternam, much of

the Kyrie and portions of the Sequence, the long poem beginning with Dies– Irae and ending with Lacrimosa. Sketches or drafts remain in varying states of completion for a few of the other middle sections; nothing at all remains of Mozart’s ideas for the concluding movements.

Gloria

Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) Francis Poulenc was one of a somewhat notorious group of young French composers who became known as ‘Les Six’, an epithet clearly derived from the earlier ‘Russian Five’. The aims of the French group were to break away from the twin influences of Germanic formality and French impressionism, and to employ a direct and simple style in their own music. Of the six, Poulenc was by far the most successful.

Although Poulenc saw himself as primarily a composer of religious music, it was not in fact until 1936, following his return to Catholicism, that he produced his first sacred work. A steady stream of religious pieces then flowed from his pen, including a Mass and a series of motets. His first largescale choral work, the Stabat Mater, appeared in 1950, and the Gloria in 1959, only four years before his death.

Both employ the same forces - chorus, soprano solo and large orchestra - and both enjoyed immediate acclaim. They have remained firm favourites with performers and audiences ever since.

Poulenc’s very distinctive style relies principally on strong musical contrasts.

The harmony moves between Stravinskian dissonance and lush, sensuous chord progressions; vigorous counterpoint in clipped, angular phrases alternates with lyrical melodic writing; dynamics frequently range from a hushed piano to an emphatic forte within the space of a bar or two. Poulenc skilfully uses this colourful musical palette to express a wide range of emotions, from lyrical serenity to unashamed glee.

The Gloria was commissioned by the Koussevitsky Foundation of America. The words from the Mass are set to music of an unmistakable freshness and vivacity. Some critics at the time suggested that it bordered on the sacrilegious; Poulenc replied, ‘While writing it I had in mind those Crozzoli frescoes with angels sticking out their tongues, and also some solemn-looking Benedictine monks that I saw playing football one day.’

The work is divided into six short movements. After a brief introduction, the chorus enters with a prominent dotted figure to the word ‘Gloria’, which forms the basis of this moveContinued

The animated second movement, ‘Laudamus Te’, reveals Poulenc in playful mood, with the chorus for the most part divided into pairs of voices - sopranos and tenors; altos and basses exchanging a series of short, pithy phrases. In the expressive third section, ‘Domine Deus’, the soprano soloist is

heard for the first time with a typically yearning melody, whilst the chorus is allocated a supporting role. We are then abruptly whisked back to the playground for the brief and chirpy ‘Domine Fili Unigenite’.

1812 Overture, Op. 49 P. I. Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)

They actually shoot off cannons in the concert hall?" said comic-strip character Calvin to his stuffed Tiger, Hobbes. "Gee, and I thought classical music was boring!" It's safe to say that almost everyone knows the flashier aspects of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture: cannons, church bells, brass bands. The solemn overture is undoubtedly one of the most sure-fire crowd pleasers to resound through the concert hall (even though it was originally intended for outdoor performances).

Tchaikovsky was at the height of his career when he was commissioned in 1880 to compose a feature piece for performance at the All-Russian Exhibition of Arts and Crafts in 1882. His first four symphonies, the First Piano Concerto and several celebrated orchestral showpieces had firmly established his international reputation as the current grand master of Russian composers.

For the exhibition, he wrote a tribute to one of the most triumphal moments in Russian history, the defeat of Napoleon's invading army near the beginning of the century.

Most of Tchaikovsky's music is at least somewhat programmatic, but in 26

no other piece is the program quite so transparent. The overture begins with a Novgorod peasant tune, played first by the strings then augmented by woodwinds, representing the simple purity of Mother Russia One can almost imagine the land itself as a slumbering giant, secure in its own strength. Suddenly, the serene atmosphere is broken by a stormy passage heralding the incipient war. It was as if a messenger burst through the doors into a church service announcing "We've been invaded".

A single snare drum signals the march of Napoleon's army onto the scene, announced by the horns. The Russian imperial army defends its territory in a fierce clash, but the invader prevails as bits of the French national anthem "Le Marseilles" periodically rise above the clamor. The Russians retreat.

In quiet retrospect, the people mourn the desecration of their homeland by invaders and prepare to rise against the French. Battle is resumed, but once more "Le Marseilles" is heard, as the French prevail, and once again the people mourn. Yet a third time the Russian troops attack, and this time the land itself-- the sleeping giant -- rises up

to join with its people and throw off the invader's yoke. (Coincidentally, this is historically accurate, for it was the Russian winter that actually defeated Napoleon's far superior military forces.)

The victorious third conflict leads to a celebration unprecedented in orchestral music: a salute by cannons, pealing of church bells, the Czarist

national anthem, along with the solemn melody that opened the work.

Tchaikovsky even throws in snatches of the march that originally heralded the arrival of the French, but "Le Marseilles" is nowhere to be heard.

Mother Russia has prevailed, and joy is everywhere.

Philharmonic Orchestra Conductor

Dan Whisler is currently Director of Orchestras at the Youth Performing Arts School in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, and recently became the Conductor of the New World Youth Philharmonic Orchestra in Indianapolis, Indiana. Prior to moving to Kentucky, he was the Director of Orchestras at Center Grove Community School Corporation in Greenwood, Indiana, Founding and Principal Conductor with Intimate Opera of Indianapolis, and served on the faculty of the String Quartet Program of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado.

Mr. Whisler has conducted over 350 works with over 60 ensembles, including professional orchestras in the USA, England, Spain, Lithuania, and Romania.

His awards as a conductor include the Downbeat Award in 2011 for Best U.S. College Classical Ensemble (conducting Hallfter’s Tiento del primer tono y batalla imperial) and the Bel Canto Award for Excellence in Conducting.

An active supporter of new music, Mr. Whisler has premiered over 25 works, both as a conductor and as a performer, including conducting the world premiere of the Celtic ballet, Diedre of the Sorrows. He is comfortable with opera and musical theatre literature as well, having been on the conducting staff with Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Cosi fan tutte, Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, and numerous opera scenes concerts for the University of Northern Colorado Opera Theatre, Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd for Theater Workshop of Owensboro (Kentucky), Holst’s Savitri and Handel’s Giulio Cesare with Intimate Opera of Indianapolis, and Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado with the YPAS music department.

An experienced educator, Mr. Whisler has worked with youth orchestras in Kansas, Colorado, New York, Indiana, and Kentucky (USA). At Center Grove, he increased orchestra student enrollment by over 37 percent and won 17 ISSMA Gold awards in three years. Under his direction, the YPAS Philharmonia was selected to perform in the 2015 Music for All National Orchestra Festival. He graduated summa cum laude with a BME from Wichita State University (Kansas) and earned an MM in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Northern Colorado. His primary conducting teachers include Russell Guyver and Mark Laycock, with additional studies at conducting institutes in Colorado, Oregon, Maryland, and Europe with internationallyrenowned mentors, including Jorma Panula, Craig Kirchhoff, Markand Thakar, Colin Metters, and Larry Livingston.

NEW WORLD YOUTH Philharmonic ORCHESTRA

Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21 Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)

Beethoven’s first symphony is an important landmark in his compositional output. It was his first major work for orchestra. His only significant orchestral writings previously were his first two piano concertos, and a few short pieces. Yet his use of the orchestra is both assured and highly original and foreshadows the achievements that are so obvious in his later symphonies.

It is wrong to the think of the first symphony as an early work. Beethoven was thirty when he finally completed it. At that age, Mozart had completed his 36th symphony (the Linz) and Schubert had written all nine of his symphonies. Furthermore, the composition occupied Beethoven for a very long time. The earliest known sketches date from 1795, suggesting that his first symphony took the longer to write than any of his later ones. Perhaps the young composer was struggling with the seeming impossibility of writing a symphony that could compare favourably with the whole series of symphonic masterpieces that had flowed effortlessly from the pen of Joseph Haydn in the early 1790s. At its first performance the first symphony had a rough reception from the contemporary critics, one of whom described it as “a caricature of Haydn pushed to absurdity”. However it rapidly gained popularity with the public and established Beethoven’s reputation as a major orchestral composer in Vienna.

Many authors have written in detail

about the slow introduction to the symphony, whose opening bars were a particular target for the contemporary critics. A conventional symphony of the time would have announced the key tonality clearly at the start of the work, but instead of starting out with a C major chord Beethoven teases the listener by suggesting first that the key is F major, and then G major. To modern listeners the opening sounds perfectly innocent, and indeed much more audacious harmonic progressions had been used regularly by Haydn and other contemporary composers, but virtually never at the opening of a symphony.

Beethoven clearly liked the device as he used it again almost immediately in his Prometheus overture, and at one point planned to open his third symphony with it. After the teasing of the slow introduction there are few surprises in the rest of the first movement. It follows the sonata form model of Mozart and Haydn, but with a liveliness and exhilaration that is completely characteristic of Beethoven.

The graceful theme that begins the andante is presented as a series of entries in fugal style, though the movement does not develop as a fugue and does not contain much contrapuntal material. Rather it is a graceful and beautiful movement in simple ternary form (ABA) with the repeat of the first section being more varied and decorated.

Pelléas et Mélisande Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924)

It isn’t especially surprising that Maeterlinck’s surrealist play Pelleas et Melisande (1892–93) is remembered, at least by music lovers, mostly in terms of Debussy’s extraordinary opera; that is a historic meeting of genius. Other composers, however, also tried their hands at Pelleas et Melisande music.

Schoenberg wrote a symphonic poem after Maeterlinck’s drama, and Sibelius and Faure each wrote incidental music or productions of the play.

Faure’s Pelleas et Melisande was the first of them all.Faure composed his incidental music for the 1898 production in London, where he often traveled to visit good friends. (Debussy had declined the commission.) In the rush to be done on time, he enlisted the help of his former student, Charles Koechlin (1867–1950), to orchestrate the eight movements of his piano score for small theatre orchestra. Later Faure himself extracted three movements from the incidental music to fashion a suite for full orchestra. As the Pelleas et Melisande suite achieved popularity in concert performances, he added a fourth movement, his Sicilienne for cello and piano, opus 78, likewise orchestrated by Koechlin.

The published editions of 1909 and thereafter include that movement.

The Pelleas et Melisande suite is an attractive example of Faure’s style in that the miniatures are so similar to 34

his vocal music—songs, that is, without words. In the Spinning Song, for example, the oboe is the (primary) singer, as is the flute in the Sicilienne.

The melodies of both clearly suggest utterances of the human voice.

The prelude music introduces the scene in which we find Melisande lost by a fountain in the forest, seized by yearning she cannot explain. In the distance is heard the horn call of Golaud, who will discover her there.The Spinning Song came before the famous love scene in the third act where Melisande at the window of her apartment and Pelleas below first acknowledge their passion—to each other and to themselves. Listen for the rapid spinning figure in the upper string, pianissimo, and for the conversational interplay of soprano and tenor melodies, particularly when the second theme wells up from solo clarinet and horn. The jealous Golaud kills his half-brother Pelleas and (it transpires) mortally wounds Melisande at the end of act IV. Her dead march came as the last entr’acte and also during the scene at her bedside. The thematic contours are derived from the tenor melody of the Spinning Song, so closely associated with rapturous yet forbidden love.

Masquerade Suite

Aram Khachaturian (1903-1978) Composers of the former Soviet Union, particularly during the reign of Joseph Stalin, were required to produce music that conformed to official ideology. One of its tenets was to promote the ethnic music of the republics that made up its vast empire.

Although he was born in Georgia and lived most of his adult life in Moscow, Khachaturian was ethnically Armenian and adapted Armenian traditional music into classical forms. He had a knack for stirring rhythms and driving melodies, blending the oriental quality of his native modes and rhythms with the lush Russian romantic tradition.

Starting with his Piano Concerto in 1936 and his ballets Gayane and Spartakus, he created a series of compositions that achieved worldwide acclaim. These and odes to Lenin and Stalin kept him in good graces with the Soviet authorities.

After World War II, however, the Soviet Composer’s Union tightened its grip. National and worldwide popularity did not spare Khachaturian from the scrutiny and censure of the Soviet com-

missars. Together with Shostakovich, Prokofiev and a host of lesser composers, he was severely criticized by the Central Committee of the Communist Party for his “modernistic” transgressions. It was only after Stalin’s death in 1953 that he felt free again to compose in his own idiom.

In 1941 Khachaturian composed incidental music for the play Masquerade by the Russian Romantic playwright and poet Mikhail Lermontov (1814–1841), which was staged in Moscow on June 21, the evening before the German invasion. The play, with echoes of Shakespeare’s Othello, tells of a world-weary aristocrat who suspects his bride of adultery, murders her and goes mad at the revelation that she was innocent.

Three years later Khachaturian arranged five movements from the incidental music into a suite. The lighthearted tone of the music contrasts ironically with the grimness of Lermontov’s play.

Concert Orchestra Conductor

Dr. Ardis R. Faber, Conductor, most recently served as Associate Professor of Music at Grace College School of Music, Winona Lake, Ind. She received her B.S. in music education from Grand Valley State University, Allendale, Mich.; M.M. in trumpet performance from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill.; and a Doctorate of Arts in music education and orchestral conducting from Ball State University, Muncie, Ind. Dr. Faber served on the Grace College School of Music faculty from 1988 through 2009, where she was head of music education, taught conducting and music education classes, and supervised student teachers in the field. Additionally she conducted performance groups that included the Grace Community Orchestra (renamed Symphony of the Lakes), Festival Chorus (renamed Symphonic Chorus), Grace Chamber Singers & Chamber Ensemble, and pit orchestra for musicals and special guests; she also directed the Lancer Basketball Band. Faber arranged numerous pieces for each of the listed ensembles, while continuing to edit and arrangepieces for Tim Zimmerman and The King’s Brass and for the Valley Springs Fellowship Worship Team. She has toured with these performance groups throughout the United States and Germany, Ecuador, Mexico and South Korea. As an Assistant Director for Strings at Winona Lake, she conducts the Chamber String Orchestra, while developing students through comprehensive musicianship activities and classes.

In July 2010, Faber earned her Doctorate of Arts degree from Ball State University.

She served as an Assistant Conductor of the Ball State Symphony Orchestra during the 2005-07 school years and had the pleasure of assisting Dr. Fiora Contino as Assistant Conductor with the 2007 BSU opera presentation of Madame Butterfly. In addition she conducted the world premiere performance of 53rd Street: The Opera by Jody J. Nagel, with Dr. Tammie Huntington as director. While at Ball State, she studied conducting with Maestros Kirk Trevor, Dr. Leonard Atherton and Bohuslav Rattay. Dr. Faber resides in Winona Lake, Ind., where she enjoys reading, bicycling and the beauty of the lake.
