A PLACE TO BELONG

A message from NFI North Executive Director, Luke Reynard

While it may not be the traditional January 1st celebration, July 1 is that start of NFI North’s fiscal year. Our annual budget as well as most of our contracts run from July 1 to June 30th every year, so in many ways this is the agency new year. We just completed Fiscal Year (FY) 24, and July 1 is the start of Fiscal Year 25. I am pleased to announce that NFI North had a successful FY 24, with important work being underway in Newport as we are getting closer to opening our new community homes there, as well as the 16 new participants being welcomed at our Pathways Program in Concord. We are continuing to

increase our community-based services in both Maine and New Hampshire and have helped many people reach their goals along the way. Our NFI North Board of Directors has been exceptionally supportive, approving our FY25 operating budget allowing us to grow in our work to inspire and empower people to reach their full potential.

As we enter this new NFI year, I want to reflect on other transitions that have occurred this year. It has now been six months since becoming the Executive Director of this amazing agency, and Jill Allen has now been our COO for five months. Matt Narel has also smoothly transitioned into the role of Maine Regional Director. That is a lot of change in just six months for an organization that boasts impressive tenure and longevity throughout our programs. I mention this because change and transition can be hard on everyone involved, and I want to thank all of you for your overwhelming support for our new roles, and for your patience as we navigate some new waters.

As I look to the future for NFI North, I am excited about the opportunities that are ahead of us. We have new programs being developed and we are updating our agency strategic plan to help guide us. Our DEIB efforts are expanding with great success. The healthcare landscape is changing rapidly, both nationally and locally, and our focus on mission, core values, and teamwork will allow us to continue supporting people in Maine and New Hampshire in need of support, just as we have done for the last 32 years. Each of you is an integral member of making NFI North the best place to work in New Hampshire and Maine. NFI North has become successful because you bring a unique and diverse perspective to work every day, and that is what makes us the place to belong.

July is Disability Pride Month

National Disability Independence Day

National Disability Independence Day marks the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990 This crucial legislation ensures equal rights and opportunities for people with disabilities across employment, public accommodations, transportation, and telecommunications The day celebrates the progress made in disability rights and highlights ongoing efforts for full inclusion and accessibility. It honors the achievements of individuals with disabilities and calls for breaking down barriers to create a more inclusive society where everyone can lead an independent and fulfilling life It is also a day to educate the public about the challenges still faced by the disabled community. By continuing to advocate for change, we move closer to a world where all individuals can thrive Despite the progress made since the ADA's enactment, significant gaps remain in areas such as employment rates and accessible infrastructure This day also serves as a reminder of the importance of continued vigilance and action to uphold and advance the rights of people with disabilities Celebrate National Disability Independence Day through local events such as Disability Rights Maine Pride on July 19th, 2024
