Hello Alumni, Michael and Sarah here. We hope all is going well with you in 2016. So what has been going on with the alumni group so far in 2016?

We had a great meeting in January down in Miami during GSMC. We heard from the Class of 2015 on their experience going through the program along with a report on their class project. We discussed the alumni newsletter and decided to continue sending it out 3 times per year. If you have any suggestions or would like to contribute to the newsletter, be sure to reach out to us–we are always looking for volunteers. We finalized the plans for the Alumni Event during SENA in March—we once again voted to continue donating the money from this event to SIRF for the Wally Stevens Living Fund we setup a few years ago. We also had a long discussion on the 2016 Future Leaders Class.

We all want to continue improving this program for generations to come. The discussion was wonderful and we had many suggestions on session topics and locations for the future—keep those ideas coming, it’s what makes this program fresh and exciting from year to year.

An update from our Alumni Event during SENA in March—we had a record number of attendees this year—102!!!

First time we have broken the 100 mark...let’s see if next year we can hit 150 people!! We rented out the entire City Bar at the Westin this year and that made for a wonderful event–plenty of room for the 102—so if you didn’t join us this year—mark it on your calendar for 2017! We also had a record number of corporate sponsors this year—14! Let’s hit 25 in 2017—it’s not too early to let us know we can count on you and your company. You will see recognition in the newsletter of the 14 companies—please take time to thank them—they all have been wonderful advocates for the Future Leaders Program. We raised another $7500 for SIRF. That is the same amount we donated in 2015—we would love to hear your ideas on how to break $10,000 for 2017—email or call us!!

Every year I get the honor of working with the Future Leaders. And every year we find new ways to generate more food for food banks across the country. I’ve already talked with several members of the 2016 class, and they are bringing new energy to SeaShare. As you think about ways to help feed people, I hope you’ll consider a few insights: 1. When it comes to giving, thinking outside of the box can be rewarding. Our industry has unique resources to improve nutrition.

Work with your teams to figure out you what you and your company would be good at giving. Keep in mind that creative ideas should be realistic and appropriate.

2. Everyone deserves to eat well and with dignity, including the 49 million Americans who struggle to get enough food on the table.

“Waste” is not to be given to the poor. Serving people with a side of dignity with their meal is critical to changing the culture of how we think about those in poverty. The food pantries and soup kitchens that SeaShare works with exemplify this philosophy every day.

3. Consider your food donations as an extension of your kitchen table.

Much like you might share a meal with a friend going through a difficult time.

One of the common denominators of all Future Leaders is a shared passion for seafood. And one of NFI’s goals is to promote seafood as a healthy, sustainable source of protein. If we add a philanthropic component to the passion and the goal, we can use seafood to change lives.

Please take a minute to find out what your company’s giving program includes. Then put your thinking caps on, and let’s work together. I look forward to what this class brings to the table.

Russ Mentzer updates on one of the latest SIRF-funded projects

Environmental Impact of Seafood Versus Other Proteins Environmental impacts continue to be discussed among consumers, retailers and in the press.

Consumers are asking more questions about where their food comes, what is in it, and what impact does it have on the planet? Consumers vote for food products with their wallets. We see this in their purchase behavior of products that contain gluten, or are gluten free. Their outspoken concern about GMO’s has motivated some of our largest food companies to voluntarily begin labeling their products as to the contents of GMOs. Consumer concern makes this research critical so we can respond to their interests, and preventing a disruption of the seafood marketplace. While some research in this area has been done, there is no comprehensive study of the issue. Committed to ensuring that the seafood community is ahead of this environmental question, the Seafood Industry Research Fund (SIRF) has engaged Dr. Ray Hilborn from the University of Washington, and Peter Tyedmers Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia to conduct this comprehensive study.

Drs. Hilborn and Tyedmers will investigate and report on the comparative environmental impact of seafood (wild and farmed) versus other proteins and major food groups. Dr. Hilborn is well-known for working collaboratively with other scientists to review data and effectively communicate their findings. Dr. Tyedmers is the leading researcher on seafood life-cycle analyses, looking at the impacts of seafood on carbon, energy uses, water, antibiotics, etc.

“The benefit to the seafood community of a comprehensive analysis of water, energy, carbon, food miles, nutrient loading, antibiotics, and other environmental impacts, when compared to other proteins and major food groups, is likely to generate a positive positioning for seafood, both farmed and wild,” said Russ Mentzer, Chairman of the Seafood Industry Research Fund. “Companies could use this analysis with customers to demonstrate the expected low footprint of seafood,” he added.

The project is expected to be completed early in 2017.

What happens in Congress is important to the seafood industry. Laws and regulations created in Washington affect all aspects of our profession. You may think that politics don’t affect you or your business, but they do!

It is imperative that everyone in the seafood industry be involved in the proceedings of Washington to ensure that we have a voice in how those issues are decided. To have a truly effective presence in Washington, you need to have what some call a “three-legged stool”: • Direct lobbying (NFI does on a daily basis); • Grassroots advocacy (when we reach out to Congress—either by phone, letters, or at the Political Conference); • And the third leg is FishPAC You may not like money and politics, but effective advocacy requires resources to allow NFI to carry our voice to legislators that are aligned with our interests.

What is FishPAC? FishPAC is NFI’s bipartisan mechanism that provides the means to financially support quality, pro-seafood industry candidates to the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. FishPAC’s money is made up of voluntary donations from individual NFI members, using their own personal money. No corporate money allowed.

FishPAC pools these donations together and makes strategic contributions to members of and candidates for the U.S. House and Senate. In addition to direct contributions to candidates, FishPAC helps organize fundraising events for key members of Congress. These events are opportunities for our supportive community to come together and raise money to promote candidates who support our issues. Donations to FishPAC, as well as donations from FishPAC, are completely transparent - per federal law.

It is important to know that FishPAC, and all PACs, are part of the process. Capitol Hill is driven by relationships, and this is one additional tool to establish and maintain those relationships with federal elected officials who are supportive of the seafood industry. There is a saying that ”if you don’t have a seat at the table, then you are probably on the menu.” FishPAC enables NFI to have a continued seat at the table.

How does FishPAC decide who to support?

FishPAC uses the following criteria in its decisions on which House and Senate candidates to support (depending on funds donated made by NFI members): • • • • •

Be a Champion of Seafood Issues; Be up for re-election; Record of support and experience with the seafood industry Relevance; Competitiveness of the race

...continued from page 5 Some of you may ask “How can I give to FishPAC when it funds candidates with whom I disagree?” That is a very good question, we want to you know that FishPAC doesn’t play politics – we support candidates who support our seafood issues, regardless of party or political ideology. Legislation cannot pass without support from members of both political parties. FishPAC contributes to both Republicans and Democrats because we need allies on both sides of the aisle, and we want those allies to have the funds needed for their elections.

What can Future Leaders do to support the cause?

I encourage all of you to give, or pledge to give. You may be thinking “What if I cannot afford to contribute?” The fact is, you can’t afford not to contribute. With so much at stake in Congress that will impact the way you run your business and how seafood is eaten, this is the time to give what you can.

Any amount is helpful, but the important thing is to participate. Your donations help us to educate Congress on issues affecting the seafood industry and how the decisions they make impact our community. If it is not NFI members, then who? Our adversaries are also contributing, so we need to be sure our voices are heard.

The maximum annual contribution is $5000, but no amount is too small—FishPAC staff will gladly let you know that they take credit cards, and even quarterly contributions! There are a few rules that must be adhered to: you must be a NFI member, and you must be a U.S. citizen.

It is FishPAC’s goal to raise $100,000 before the election in order to financially support our friends in what is proving to be an exciting election year. We are almost halfway there. I have already given my money, and I encourage you to give as much as you can in the next few months.

Please make a commitment today – as leaders we have an obligation to lead by example and this is one such opportunity. I believe that we can drive 100% participation, in whatever annual contribution amount makes sense for you, by the Future Leader class and alumni’s. What a statement that would be!!

FishPAC is happy to take personal checks and credit cards (there are rules about cash). Kedrin Simms Brachman, NFI’s Director of Government Relations is our point person for all FishPAC related matters. She will be happy to take your contributions, and answer any questions.

Along with his CEO duties at Seattle Fish Company in Denver, Derek Figueroa serves on the Executive Committee of the National Fisheries Institute and has worked diligently with other members to make sure our seafood voices are heard on Capitol Hill.

Deep Thoughts ON LEADERSHIP

When you hear the word “brand,” what comes to mind? Is it a type of car, your preferred craft beer, or perhaps a favorite snack item or power bar?

According to the author of The Leader’s Edge, Susan Hotchkinson, it’s critical to your career that you develop a brand for yourself and that you keep it top of mind.

In her book, she shares a methodology that she has developed, called the The 5 P’s of Leadership Brand®. She proposes that The 5 P’s are the foundation of all strong personal and leadership brands. These included:

Persona

the emotional connection and reaction you elicit in others.

Product

the sum of your qualifications and experience.

Packaging

your personal appearance and how you perform your work.

Promotion

how you inform your market about your value and impact.

Permission

your belief that you are legitimate and have important contributions to make.

Although this idea of a personal brand is relatively new, as I look back on my career, the 5 P’s reflect lessons I have learned along the way. It is helpful to think of them together and understand the strength they offer for career planning and development. As we all know, the days of employment with one company for life are long gone. Using a personal and leadership brand to manage your career allows you to take charge of your career evolution and be known for consistently delivering distinctive quality and value.

So, the next time you reach for that favorite branded item, put some thought into your personal brand and make sure you can identify and employ your 5 P’s. I’m glad I did.

Like many of you, I share a deep commitment to the seafood industry. This commitment has grown and evolved thanks to the many people who have shaped my experiences and have continuously challenged me to learn and do more.

When I was a teenager, I never imagined that the lessons I learned fishing with my father in Prince William Sound, Alaska, would become the skills, relationships and experiences that I would draw strength and guidance from in the future. These “survival” skills included donning a personal flotation device, being a “highliner,” and above all maintaining respect for our environment and the livelihoods dependent upon it. After college, I worked in Ecuador for five years; part-time in international development and full-time farming, processing and exporting shrimp—an experience that would drive my future in the seafood industry. My export relationships from South America translated to sales and marketing in North America. During this tenure, I was grateful to have learned from seafood industry leaders and pioneers while striving to one day become a leader and pioneer myself.

A thirst for academic knowledge brought me to the University of Rhode Island (URI), where I completed a master’s degree in Marine Affairs in 2014 and where I am currently a candidate for a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Marine Affairs. At URI, I work in a dual capacity as doctoral student and research associate at the Coastal Resources Center, Graduate School of Oceanography. My research focuses on value chain improvements within artisanal fisheries.

Currently, I am working with fishermen and fishing communities in West Africa. While doing research in The Gambia, I discovered that local fishermen were in dire need of personal flotation devices (PFDs). With generous donations from Trident Seafoods, North Pacific Fishing Vessels Association and Alaska Fisheries Science Center, I was able to deliver new and used PFDs to these fishermen last year. I hope to bring more attention to this urgent need and help fishermen be safe-at-sea everywhere.

NFI Future Leaders’ philanthropic spirit and global awareness make me proud to be an alumna from the class of 2009. I consider this my alma mater. I am also inspired by the work of NFI Future Leaders who came before and after me and who have out-competed each other in order to provide nutritious meals to families in need through SeaShare. That’s what I call healthy competition!

During fundraising events and educational opportunities, our conversations always center on the shared interests of our industry, yet our reach clearly extends beyond that. As alumni, we are in a unique position to learn from and support each other, and if we continue delivering on the commitments we make together, I am certain we will achieve even more.

Being born and raised in one of the oldest American fishing communities, Gloucester, MA has allowed me to grow up surrounded by the seafood industry so not too surprisingly I found myself working for a seafood company shortly after my college graduation. I am currently in my 10th year working at F. W. Bryce, a Gloucester based company and in that time I have had the opportunity to learn and explore facets of the industry that I never knew existed.

In 2005, I graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a Liberal Arts degree and upon graduation I spent a little over a year in the Financial Services industry. It wasn’t long before the seafood industry starting calling my name, and in late 2006 I began my career at F.W. Bryce. I am now the HR/ Marketing Manager and have been in this role for the past few years and continue to expand my industry knowledge including the ever changing rules and regulations of seafood.

When our company President recommended that I participate in the NFI Future Leaders class of 2016, my first thought was I cannot pass on this tremendous opportunity. I certainly have many personal and career goals for this program. Primarily I am looking forward

to all of the networking opportunities and connections I will be able to make over this next year. I also look forward to being exposed to different aspects of the industry After talking with several past NFI Future leaders over the past few months and learning about their experiences with this program, I am hoping to not only take away more knowledge but also lifelong connections that allow us all to be better at what we do. Sharing stories, experiences and insight from all different sides of the seafood industry sounds like an exciting prospect, one I cannot wait to get started on. I am looking forward to meeting and learning with the rest of the Class of 2016.
