There are two phases for CCA sign-ups. The first phase will allow learners (or parents of children from Kindergarten to Year 4) to select up to 5 CCAs in order of preference. Please select CCAs that your child will commit to for the whole season. The system will then randomly allocate places. There is no advantage to selecting early in this process.

Due to the length of the school day CCAs are not available for Nursery learners.

Kindergarten learners will only be assigned one CCA per week.

Year 1 will be allocated up to 2 CCAs (1 CCA, 1 paid CCA).

All learners from Year 2 will be assigned up to a maximum of 5 CCAs, (3 CCAs, 2 paid CCAs) depending on the popularity of the CCAs.

Key Dates & Times

Phase 1 will open at 10.00am on 24 February 2017 and will remain open for FOUR DAYS, closing on 28 February 2017 at 10.00am. Once the initial allocations have been made the CCA portal will re-open at 4.00pm on the 28 February 2017and close again on 2 March at 10.00am. This is when all remaining CCA places will be allocated. Season Three runs from 6 March 2017 to 19 May 2017 (9 weeks).

Participation In CCA Sessions & Events

Please take time to read over the various activities on offer and discuss with your child which CCAs they would like to commit to. We strongly encourage every learner to commit to at least one CCA each season and also to take part in at least one voluntary event a year.

CCAs run over three seasons to coincide with the ACSIS sports seasons, but do not run during school or public holidays.

If you wish to continue a CCA from Season Two that is part of an ongoing course such as Karate, Taekwondo, Ballet, Piano Intermediate and Race Car Engineering/Intermediate, you must select this CCA as one of your choices and a higher priority will be given to you.

Additional Lunchtime & After School Activities Sport

MAKERSPACE

Each day there will be games organised by the HPE department at lunchtimes for Primary learners and space allocated for Secondary learners. These will be advertised outside the HPE department.

Swimming at Nexus

Please note that the Nexus Swim Squads will continue to train as established. This programme runs throughout the year. There will be new trials for the swim squads at the start of the academic year. Learners in Year 2 and 3 who wish to improve their swimming should join the Recreational Swimming CCA on Thursday 3.30pm – 4.20pm.

School Council

Primary Do you have a cause you’re passionate about? Would you like to take action? Nexus Primary Council is there to help you take action. This season there is a focus on environmental awareness in preparation for Earth day. Council meets once a week in D2 on Thursday lunchtimes.

Secondary The focus for the Nexus Secondary Council this term is supporting our Nexus community in the celebration and recognition of diversity within and beyond our school. The learners have been led by our Year 12 representatives in the planning of activities, lessons, stalls and assemblies that encourage everyone to understand, value and embrace individuality and uniqueness. The group continues to share and discuss whole school issues and ideas, and work towards a positive outcome for all. The Nexus Secondary School Council meet once a week.

Art Open House

Art at Lunch (Year 2 – 6) Learners are welcome to come into the Art Studio A2-51 on Mondays during their lunch break to work with recyclables and to plan and create artwork.

Transportation

At the end of CCAs, learners may take the late bus home at 4.30pm for an additional charge or can arrange other forms of transport. CCA buses must be confirmed by contacting the BT&Tan Transport Pte Ltd Office at 6483 7260/6506 0140 or emailing ops@btntan.com. More contact details are available at www.nexus.edu.sg. Parents who are picking up learners at 4.30pm can meet their child at the cafeteria.

Costs

Many CCAs are offered free of charge; if there is a cost associated with the CCA this is indicated. Payments for CCAs should be made once your child receives confirmation of a place on this activity. All payments should be made to the School Cashier. Please note that all CCA payments should be completed by 17 March 2017 (end of week 2 of CCAs).

If your child attends their CCA at any point after week two and you have not paid, then you will be billed for the whole season. Learners will only be able to attend their CCA in week 3 if any payment required for their activity has been made in full.

Please be aware that if your child is absent or a paid CCA is cancelled by the school due to unforeseen circumstances e.g. haze or adverse weather, there will be no ‘make-up’ class or reimbursement. This also applies to school trips and camps.

ACSIS provides learners with an opportunity to compete in an inter-school athletic programme. The academic year is divided into three sporting seasons. Each season offers different sports across various age categories in which our learners may participate. Sports offered each season, all results, divisions, member schools, age categories, sport rules and additional information can be found on the ACSIS website www.acsis.com.sg.

Learners should be present at the dedicated location at the appropriate date/time according to the schedule for training.

Due to the nature of ACSIS Season Three fixtures this academic year, training sessions for sport teams has begun. This will allow teams to prepare for the upcoming fixtures and to determine match schedules so parents can make accurate CCA choices.

Please keep in mind when making CCA choices that our ACSIS Season Three Sport teams will have fixtures/matches that will need to taken be into consideration.

All learners who signed up for an ACSIS team will be given the opportunity to train with the squad on the regular training day. However, if numbers are large, team selection for fixtures will be done on a weekly basis.

MOTHER TONGUE

Nexus is an international school in the true sense of the word and currently our learners come from 52 different countries! We are aware of at least 24 different languages spoken as a first or home language by our learners. Whilst English is our common language and all learn a new language as part of our programme, we must not underestimate the importance of our mother tongue or home language(s) which form part of our self identity.

Our programme aims to engage learners and to give them an opportunity to maintain and practise their skills in their mother tongue together with other speakers of that language of a similar age. However, a home language cannot just be cultivated through a weekly or twice weekly lesson. The family has the greatest influence on the development of a child’s mother tongue.

MUSIC ENSEMBLES

Music ensembles have two seasons in the year: Terms 1-2 and Terms 3-4.

Learners currently signed up for music ensembles will continue until the end of Term 4.

Learners are encouraged to participate for the whole year, as they will rehearse for music concerts and school events throughout the year.

There is no online sign up - please see the ensemble director.

All learners (except beginners) who are learning an instrument through the Nexus Instrumental Programme are expected to join a music ensemble for the year.

You can sign up your band as a CCA. If you and your friends would like to be in a band, discuss this with your Music teacher and decide on a regular, weekly rehearsal time. Primary (and Secondary) learners can arrange a band tutor through the group tuition programme provided by Aureus Academy (paid directly to Aureus). Bands will be given the opportunity to perform at concerts and events.

This CCA is a prelude to the proper syllabus of classical ballet and includes elements of funk jazz, modern and rhythmic dance. Learners will channel their creativity and musicality and improve their coordination, posture and body awareness. This programme combines the acrobatic and gymnastics elements to give learners a strong technical background to perform the latest parkour skills in a soft and safe environment. This CCA will take place at Singapore’s newest and best acrobatics center ‘The Yard’ boasting over 13,000 sq. ft. of apparatus. NEXUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (SINGAPORE) CCA & ACSIS SPORT PROGRAMME SEASON THREE

The 2 hour session is aimed at Nexus learners who have completed at least 2 seasons of gymnastics at the school and are looking to advance their skills. The CCA is also suitable for those who have trained in gymnastics before. The CCA takes place at ‘The Yard’, Singapore’s premier training facility for acrobatics and gymnastics. There will be support from highly qualified coaches and access to a range of facilities including sprung floors, low and high beams, parallel and asymmetric bars, rings and vault. Please note that this CCA will NOT return to Nexus and learners will need to be collected or make arrangements to travel home at 6pm from The Yard.

The progamme teaches children how to perform simple aerial tricks and maintain their rhythm on a trampoline. As their skills and confidence grow, they will build up to some incredible big-air stunts. In this CCA a theme is given for the year (i.e. An Imperfect World), and specific subject related questions are given (i.e. Science: Disease and Public Health). A team of 3 learners compete together to earn the most points and get prizes. Learners compete in 4 events: Team Debate, Scholar’s Bowl, Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Challenge, but also includes fun events such as Talent Shows and Discos. There are regional rounds (Singapore round is at Dulwich College in March, 11–12 2017), and winners from regional rounds qualify for Global rounds held in different countries. The Global Round for 2017 will be held in Bangkok, Thailand. Junior competitors range in age from 10–14, seniors 15 – 19 years old, so this is open to Secondary learners only. Karate is an ancient Japanese art of self defense that does not involve the use of weapons, and focuses on speed, techniques, and gracefulness, rather than brute force. In this CCA learners can expect to build up stamina as it is a high cardio sport. All parts of the body will be in motion during training and it is great for the strengthening of bones, joints, and muscles.

Pad work, Kata (sets attack), defense movements and sparring will all be part of a session. Learners will need to buy karate kit from the teacher. Learners who participated in this CCA in Season Two will be given higher priority for a place in Season Three.

However, new learners are welcome to join.

In Mindstorms learners will explore a series of challenges in construction and programming. They will sequentially follow a series of building and programming challenges to successfully create a NXT robot that follows commands and achieves set tasks.

Discovering physics and engineering concepts to push the limit of what it means to go fast is what this CCA is all about. Learners will have the chance to apply the concepts they are taught to build and race a gravity powered car against their friends. The cost also covers a $20 fee for the race car parts.

This CCA is a prelude to the full syllabus of classical ballet and is designed for learners to discover the beautiful world of music and dance. Here they will be taught to develop rhythm, body awareness, coordination and grace in a structured and fun class.

This CCA is designed to introduce learners to the basics of Chinese calligraphy. They will also learn Chinese language and culture through calligraphy.

Learners will have hands-on training about how to write a standard Chinese character with a traditional brush. By the end of the course, they will write a Chinese poem or a couplet on a piece of rice paper.

This time learners are put in the driver’s seat. Please note it is possible to join this CCA even if you did not do Race Car Engineering in Season Two, although it is an advantage. In this CCA learners will explore what is means to go really fast! By putting the fun back into engineering, students will discover how the process of automobile and race track design can influence the speed of a car. Learners will build and race a 4 wheel drive car and design a race track. The cost also covers a $20 fee for the race car parts. Explore the insights of Japanese culture through animation movies, music, food, language and more.

Learners are required to bring along a device or paper to be able to make notes and record information. This CCA is open to all learners and there is no requirement to speak Japanese.

This CCA allows young learners to use the simple and easy Lego WeDo 2.0 kits for coding and robotics. This easy to build and easy to code robotics kit is designed to help coding beginners unleash their creativity with Lego. No previous coding experience necessary, just bring ideas and enthusiasm!

Learn the fundamentals of architecture using the Lego Architecture Studio Kit, 3D design and 3D printing! Learners will study the design theory and concepts behind famous buildings and monuments and then use their new knowledge to create their own building designs using our 3D printers.

Budding young artists will have the chance to get creative and explore different mediums each week.

As we paint, colour, stick, draw, cut and design, we will be working on various projects and gifts for celebrations throughout the season.

In this Year 12 and 13 peer mediation group learners will be able to observe, listen and support other learners with positive outcomes. They will also be trained, and professionally supervised to mediate small issues between learners. Learners who signed up to this CCA in Season Two will continue with their commitment into Season Three. This CCA is now open to learners in Year 11 who would like to join the mediation group.

Learners will be provided with acrylic paints, paper and a canvas and taught a range of skills and techniques including impasto, glazing, stippling, flicking, dabbing, detailing, layering. Acrylics have a charm of their own; they are tactile, slippery, quick drying and forgiving. This CCA will explore how versatile, creative and innovative this art material can be.

Chinese chess is one of the most popular games in the world and is played by people of all ages.

It provides opportunities for learners to develop decision making and strategy skills, and it is an excellent way of keeping the brain active! This CCA is suitable for beginners to experts.

Learners will explore the medium of clay to create some unique sculptural pieces. They will learn basic techniques in hand-building such as pinch pots and slab work. They will also practice glaze methods.

An edgy, current and funky CCA that will allow learners to practise and choreograph routines to the latest chart hits. The dancers will work in lots of different styles including street dance, modern, contemporary and musical theatre. There will be a flash mob performance of all of the work created in this CCA at the end of the season.

This club supports the Year 6 production. We will be designing and creating props for the play. This will involve working with different materials as required to create props. Get innovative with material to create an environment on stage to bring alive this year’s performance. Thanks to our partnership with the Singapore Repertory Theatre learners in this CCA will have the chance to visit the KC Arts Centre and learn how props are designed, created, lit, staged and used for a professional show .

All sessions are with Golf Pro Lee Carrington and the cost is dependent on the number of learners who sign up. Minimum will be $500 and maximum $650. Clubs can be provided if you don't own your own. Please note that this CCA will return to Nexus around 5.15pm so learners will need to make arrangements for pick up as there are no school buses running at that time.

Any learners who would like to grow some plants and vegetables should sign up! We will start a vegetable patch from the beginning and seek to grow plants from seed. We will also look at various projects around the school to see what we can achieve with our green fingers!

Lego Robotics uses Lego bricks as a fun tool to explore robotics, mechanical systems, electronics, and programming. Students who enrol in this CCA are in for a very hands-on experience as it provides them with resources to design, build and program functional robots constructed from Lego and a few other parts, such as motors and sensors. It is open to both beginners and advanced learners of robotics and is run by expert instructors from D’Growing Hands.

Balance is essential in our lives. The idea to balance on something is an important part of many cultures, going right back to Ancient Greek and Roman times.

This Slacklining CCA will help with balance and coordination and give learners a feeling of freedom, energy and accomplishment. Once mastered you will be able to walk the length of the slackline unaided.

Please note that this CCA is suitable for learners who are able to swim at least 2 lengths of the pool unaided, in 3 or more strokes.

A calm and relaxing way to learn the fundamentals of 3D Printing in a hands-on and creative way! No experience necessary just print and bring along a stencil or idea that you would like to see change from 2D to 3D!

In this CCA learners will build a 3D printer from scratch. Starting with a box of parts and a set of plans, each week we will build and construct the machine. The printer has a strong all-metal frame, powerful electronics and a large glass print bed and learners will be able to print 3D objects using hot plastic at the end of the CCA.

The National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) is an exciting personal challenge that we are running at Nexus. It is a prestigious youth development programme which aims to develop personal qualities of self-reliance, perseverance and a sense of responsibility to oneself and to society. Learners will participate in the Bronze Award and undertake activities in the areas of Service, Adventurous Journey, Skills, and Physical Recreation. Within the CCA learners will be taught how to pitch a tent, cook on an open fire, pack a backpack, map read and route plan as well as learning survival and first aid skills. This award is sometimes referred to as the International Award or the Duke of Edinburgh Award, and is a highly respected and recognised world wide programme.

Twist, toss, twirl, roll, jump or do all at once, while boosting confidence, concentration, coordination and creativity! The FunYogiz program is all about fun! Built around the theories of multiple intelligences and play based pedagogy, combined with dynamic and challenging yoga activity, it is a sure-fire recipe for tons of FUN!!

The session is focused on building strength, fitness and a greater understanding of the core gymnastics elements of Level 1 and 2 on the uneven bars, beam, vault, and floor. The CCA is open to beginners and those developing their skills. There is a strong emphasis on technique-focused training in a fun, social and professional environment.
