Minneapolis is the shit for street shredding. It’s bred some of the sickest shreds in snowboarding. Maybe there is something in the water or the Minne-soda they drink, or maybe it's the amount of handrails that are in the vicinity.

Kids like Zac Marben, Jake OE, Joe Sexton, Jonas Michelot and the entire House of 1817 boys all call Minnesota their home and it feels like this place was built around these perfect handrails. It is a smorgasbord of urban jibs as long as you can dodge the cops. Some seriously fucked up maneuvers have been thrown down in this town. Many a pro and film crews have visited this mid-western city to throw and capture hams on the legendary down flat downs, that yellow ledge, the Junction Park kinked rail and the triple kinks. However, not all have succeeded but they all have certainly left their mark, p-tex or blood on the metal.

Well Dane Tiene, Damon Hayler and Roland Morley-Brown didn’t win the lotto but they did hit the jackpot and scored a sweet trip to Methven Heli adventures. ANZ Snowboarding sent this motley crew of rippers over to NZ and threw them into the bird to tear up the Arrowsmith Alps.

tylewars 2012 was insane! We had a landmark year in 2007 with Torstein Horgmo taking the park (and the 135ft booter) to pieces, and then in 2008 with Torstein, Charles Reid, Seb Toutant, Mikkel Bang and Chas Guildermond all blew minds, but 2012 was the best built course to date, the perfect weather conditions and snow conditions, with an awesome line up of top international riders killing it run after run, all made it the best event Australia has ever seen.

If you don’t know what Stylewars is about and you just show up to Falls Creek and ride the chair next to the course you would trip out! Massive features, gaps, helicopters filming riders with filmers hanging from open doors , guys throwing down double corks all over the place - it is like a movie set and definitely not your average day shredding the park in OZ. Instead of a standard event format which a lot of downtime, Stylewars’ jam format is a perfect platform for everyone to get maximum laps and non stop action. Max Parrot was near perfect throwing down all of his massive bag of tricks. He has since gone on to become one of the best with his signature triple cork at 6 Star events around the globe. He will be back this year so expect to see some more radical manuvs from the Quebexican.

Billy, first question, are you a skateboarder who snowboards or a snowboarder who skates?

If you ask me at the skatepark then I’m a skateboarder who snowboards but if you ask me on a chairlift I’m a snowboarder who skates!

How big of an influence does skating have on your snowboarding?

Skateboarding keeps me fit and keeps challenging me to try new tricks. I’m always pushing myself to the limits on my skateboard, which I also do when I snowboard.

You switched sponsors this year and are now riding for Burton and Anon? Are you stoked?

I am really stoked to be sponsored by Burton now, it doesn’t get much better than them, and I appreciate every opportunity they give me.

What is the best part about spending the Northern Hemi winter based in Breckenridge?

Breckenridge is amazing. It has always got the best park and best people to ride with. I’ll always end up going back there as it feels like my second home.

You went on your first street rail trip in Stockholm, how was it?

Going to Sweden for an urban shoot was really new to me because I’m so into park jumps.

After doing the rail trip it got me really hyped, I’m actually really into it now, I reckon it opened up my snowboarding a lot more, and it’s where my skating came into place.

You also got to snowboard with Kareem El Rafie and Leo Crawford?

Riding with Kareem and Leo was sick, also riding with Tor (Lündstrom) was a lot of fun especially in their hometowns. Setting up the spots with Kareem and Leo was crazy, they would make sure everything was absolutely perfect before they would hit the spot.

It was good experience though and I know how to set up a spot properly now!

Explain the differences between hitting rails in the street compared to the park?

Well it’s pretty different, hitting a rail in a park is for sure easier because it’s always set up perfectly and usually pretty mellow. In the street you can set it up as perfectly as you like but it always has that little bit of sketchiness about it and definitely way more consequences.

Which is your home mountain and who do you usually shred with?

Perisher is my home mountain and I usually ride with my brother Jesse, Benny Randall, Jesse Kennedy, Jye kearney, and Jackson Collings. I’ve got a lot of homies to ride with there, always good times.

Are you over the contest scene and what do you want to focus on now?

Who are your influences in snowboarding?

I wouldn’t say I am over the contest scene, I mean, I still want to do some contests just Justin “Grover” Graves, my Dad and my bro Jesse have to see how I go in them. After doing that rail trip I went on in Stockholm it kinda made always had a massive influence on my snowboarding. me want to hit more rails and street spots and try and get as many shots as possible. What are your winter plans?

Next year I would like to get on as many trips as I can.

I’m doing the season down at Jindabyne, I’m going to do as You just turned 18 early this year, are you going to be giving the Banjo (Pub in many contests as I can and also work at Rhythm snowboard Jindabyne) a good crack this season? shop in Cooma.

Hell yeah I am. That’s not even a question. Haha.

How did you first get sponsored?

Actually when I was 12 I won a competition and I got a little hook up with Burton snowboards, and now I’m back riding for them 6 years later. Haha!

Who do you think is killing it at the moment in Australia?

I always look up to Jye Kearney’s riding but I would also say Iver Lynn, Tim Laidlaw and Nick Wood are always killing it in the park these days.

trick tip

o with this trick your speed will be determined by the size of the wall ride. On this particular wall ride, you can go pretty fast as there is plenty of wall.

You can also go pretty slow to get used to it as there was no gap-on to the wall. If the wall you’re hitting has a gap-on then maybe 50-50 the wall a few times first to get the speed. When you have hit it a few times and you’re feeling comfortable with the wall you need to come into it switch.

01 As you make your set up line from your heels to your toes and you’re about to pop off the lip, you need to rotate your shoulders and upper body to the opposite way that you normally would. I know this might sound weird though, it is possible you can learn to do this on the flat just the same as I have explained it, just pop little switch 180s off the toes and you will get the feeling.

02 So by this time you are just off the lip with your board at about 90 degrees, you want to keep spinning your board another 180 degrees to land with the nose of your board facing down towards the bottom of the wall. To do this you need to bring your back leg around to make sure your board lands flat based with the wall. This can feel a little bit funny the first few tries as you really need to force it around so as you don’t edge out and crash (no one wants to see that !!!), you should be able to spot where you’re going to land from here.

03 Now you’re hovering up there just off the wall, there are chicks screaming your name, what do you do? You land on that wall with your base flat, by this stage you will have spotted your landing and you know where you’re going to run out. Just make sure that when you land onto the snow that you get back onto your edge and ride out, you don’t want to catch your edge and have the girls think you’re a gimp.
