CREATING YOUNG

WORDS: Gabrielle Versmessen

After reading about the events and powerful testimonies from students during the Kiwanis Key Leader program in a March 2020 issue of Kiwanis Magazine, Judge Ed Nicholas was sold on bringing the program to Manatee County.

Targeted toward eighth-grade through eleventh-grade students, the Key Leader weekend helps students develop leadership and team-building skills while assisting them in becoming the best they can be. According to the Kiwanis

website, the mission of Key Leader is to inspire young people to achieve their personal best through service leadership. Additionally, some benefits offered through participation in the program are a focus on service leadership and social-emotional skills, which can be cultivated through student participation in Kiwanis service organizations like Key Club.

This two-night sleepaway camp takes place at Dream Oaks Camp and Camp Flying Eagle. The students and chaperones sleep in spacious cabins at Dream Oaks Camp,

and in the morning, they walk through the woods to Camp Flying Eagle, where they will eat their meals and participate in the day's activities.

Speaking on the inaugural Bradenton Kiwanis Key Leader weekend held in March of 2023, Judge Nicholas said: "In this day and age, there is a lot of pressure on teenagers now with social media. It was a weekend to allow them to get away, set aside their phones for a moment, meet some new friends, and develop leadership skills that will assist them as they move

LEADERS…

through high school and into adulthood."

When the kids first arrive at the camp, there are a lot of team-building exercises to get to know one another and break down barriers since they don't know each other coming into the weekend. Lead Facilitator Craig Crawford flows through large and small group sessions, time for personal reflection, interactive activities, "challenge course" activities, and several videos. Craig tackles topics like what makes a good leader and the core values of good leaders.

Judge Nicholas pitched the Key Leader program to the Bradenton Kiwanis Club as a way to "help students understand their fit in the broader community and result in more caring, compassionate, and othercentered citizens and leaders." He became the Key Leader Program Advisor for the Bradenton Kiwanis Club.

"As soon as I read about it, I immediately knew that this is absolutely something this community needs. It's a unique and fun way to build leadership in eighth grade to high school students," he said.

Judge Nicholas has been an active member of the Bradenton Kiwanis for over 20 years, is a former president, and has also been involved with the Kiwanis K-Club in Manatee County for many years.

During March's Key Leader program, Judge Nicholas saw kids come in as strangers, wanting to become leaders, and then leave as friends and confident leaders who developed team-building and leadership skills.

One of his goals was to make the weekend available to students who would otherwise not be able to participate in this type of program. This year's event had students from Take Stock in Children, Boys and Girls Club, and PACE Center for Girls.

While the cost was $75 for the weekend, there were scholarships available. Each student who participated in March received a scholarship for their participation. Although there is a cost, the Bradenton Kiwanis Club covered all of it.

Bill Murphy, a member of Kiwanis for the last six years, and Ruth Perez-Diaz, an ESOL teacher at King Middle School, recruited several of the 22 students who attended this year's program. A few students even asked when the next one would be when they returned home.

Bill said: "It's an outstanding opportunity for kids to find out there's more to life than video games and have them really step up, understand what society is all about, and learn from other kids. It's a powerful opportunity for them."

"As members of Kiwanis, we are really dedicated to enriching the lives of children. I worked with a woman who is a compliance officer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America to bring in students. We were able to bring in a couple of families. They went home with their minds on fire with the possibilities!"

Jayne Kocher, a Kiwanis member and elected official for the city of Bradenton,

volunteered for the weekend's events. She recalled two students who had not had an experience like the camp provides and were able to go home with extra resources to help their families.

"We hope the impact made on them that weekend followed them home. I was there as a volunteer from Kiwanis and was responsible for the food and meals. It allows me to be involved in something I otherwise would not have been. It was such a positive experience and something that I would have loved as a youth. The quality of the facilitator, Craig, was excellent," Jayne said.

Next year, the Key Leader weekend will be held at the same locations (Dream Oaks Camp and Camp Flying Eagle) from March 8th through the 10th. Students who attended this past year's program can also attend future camps, and scholarships are available. Those interested in registering for the event can visit: www.bradentonkiwanis. org/keyleader.

READY FOR THE WORK AHEAD!

A Message from the New Superintendent Dr. Jason Wysong

MAIN PICTURE: Wendy Dewhurst

Ibecame a member of the Manatee County community on July 3rd, my first day of work as superintendent of schools. It has been a wonderful three months. The warm welcome I received has made the professional and personal transition much easier, and I believe it's also one reason Manatee County is growing so much—this is a wonderful place for families to live, learn, and work!

During the first weeks of this school year, I focused on listening to, and learning from, numerous individuals and community organizations. Each time I visit one of our schools to watch instruction or attend an event, I am energized by the curiosity of our students and the dedication of our employees.

I want to ensure that our district remains academically and financially stable. In the short term, this means limiting new initiatives, confirming that priorities of prior years are still adding value for students, and ensuring the district's current innovative programs have the resources needed for long-term sustainability.

One low-cost, high-impact action I will take is allocating more time to talk with students about how we can better support their learning. At our district's leadership conference in July, one student from each of our high schools participated in a panel discussion. These students represented a wide variety of interests and talents, and each shared their experience. Our leaders learned about programs and initiatives

that are treasured by students, and we also heard about some opportunities for improvement.

I am looking forward to convening more groups of students to discuss topics like agency (how much 'ownership' do students feel they have over their own learning?), leadership, and college and career planning. We also need to deepen our engagement with students for their feedback on operational topics like safety, school rules, and technology.

From an instructional perspective, my highest priority is a system-wide focus on literacy. Every educator in the School District of Manatee County should be a teacher and advocate of literacy. We must

15

engage students in literacy processes— reading, writing, speaking, and listening— every day. There is no greater supporter of this cause than the Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County; in partnership with many other organizations, there is a collective community commitment to literacy.

I look forward to the work ahead— strengthening learning and expanding pathways so that the students, families, and communities across Manatee County can thrive through educational opportunity!

A FlAvor For Giving BAck…

Kona Ice owners on their mission to support the community they love!

WORDS & PICTURES: Gabrielle Versmessen

Hailing from Delaware, working in management at Walmart, longing to sell snow cones on the beach somewhere, Stephanie Edwards made her dreams a reality in 2015.

Stephanie worked for Walmart for 23 years. She sat on the board of directors for a food bank and the local chamber of commerce through her management position with the company, as well as served in various local reading programs. After being at Walmart for that many years, she didn't think she'd be able to follow her passion.

"I loved that Walmart allowed me to give back to the community. Whether it was through my time, monetary donations, or volunteering," said Stephanie.

She came across Kona Ice one night doing a food truck event in 2015. The founder of Kona Ice, Tony Lamb, created his business model around giving back to the community. Stephanie immediately got goosebumps on her arms and butterflies in her stomach. She couldn't wait to tell her wife, Chris, what she had found.

"The next day, at four in the morning, Stephanie pitched her idea," said Chris. "I thought, 'OK, five-year plan. No worries. This is good.'"

Stephanie called Kona's corporate line, filled out an application, and scheduled a phone interview with Tony. An hour and 45 minutes later, Stephanie was sold. Florida was always her goal with the sunny skies and sandy coastlines. Stephanie, Chris, and their friend Betsy flew down to Florida with the idea of touring around Saint Petersburg.

However, as soon as they came over the Skyway Bridge, entering Palmetto and Manatee County, Stephanie and Chris knew that something about this community would fit them. Describing the area as "clean" and "friendly," these women fell in love with the area.

Although Stephanie became ill on that first trip to Florida, Betsy and Chris went to the Manatee Chamber of Commerce, spoke with some of the staff,

and were given a book about what was in the area. They were one of the first food trucks in Manatee County.

Very quickly, their five-year plan turned into a six-month plan. February of 2015 was when Stephanie made the call to Kona Ice, they flew down in March to scope out the area and looked for rentals in May. Stephanie retired from Walmart in June, she moved down in August with her and Chris' son, and Chris moved down in September. September 17th was their first school event at a Palmetto High School football game.

"We've given back $81,000 just in the last school year," Stephanie said. But Stephanie and Chris aren't silent owners. Part of living the dream is working the dream, and chances are, you can find them at the various events around town.

In 2016, they expanded to a second truck. Then, in 2017, they bought a kiosk. Parrish was starting to grow, and in 2018, Betsy

made the official move down to Florida with her husband and daughter after also retiring from Walmart.

Stephanie recalled: "She had been watching and helping us on the trucks over the years. She really enjoyed the business and saw our impact on the community."

At that point, Chris and Stephanie's territory was Ellenton to the Island and down into Bradenton. Betsy partnered with them, and they bought a third Kona Ice truck.

"The quality of life is important when you have a family. You have to have that work/life balance. It was hard for us to have folks join our team," said Stephanie.

Chris stated: "When we moved down, we didn't know anybody. We had to introduce not only ourselves but also Kona Ice. It truly was brand new to the county. We didn't have family or friends here who could represent us and the brand. That's another reason why Betsy joined us."

However, over the years, they've found some amazing team members. They brought on two full-time people and have had several local high school students work for them. Their employees have been known to have snowball fights or make snowmen for kindergartners.

"It's that kind of stuff that we can't always put the words on, and it's not really something we teach our team. They have to feel it," said Chris.

In January of 2023, they expanded for the last time. Now, Stephanie and Chris have four trucks and own all of the Manatee County territory with the addition of Lakewood Ranch.

"It definitely was not my business plan, but it was something I felt I needed to do for our community," said Stephanie. Administration changes constantly within the schools, so there were many staff in the Lakewood Ranch area with whom Stephanie and Chris had personal connections after working with them at other schools.

"When you work with a school, these staff members aren't just admin. They become your friends. You get to know them on a personal level. You also build a level of trust," Stephanie said.

It's evident that Stephanie and Chris are doing this from the heart.

"It's about what you're doing with folks and the partnership that you have with people that really makes a difference, and I feel makes us unique," She explained.

26

Since opening in 2015, Stephanie and Chris have given back over $500,000 to local schools and over $650,000 to non-profit organizations in Manatee County. However, the community impact that Kona Ice is making goes far beyond monetary value.

From covering a child's snow cone cost at a school event to providing their services at the Manatee County Sheriff's Office event, Flight to the North Pole for terminally ill children, Stephanie and Chris strive to meet needs across the county.

One of Chris' favorite parts of the job is the ability of individuality. "When somebody comes up to our truck, they get to make that Kona Ice as individual as they are. As so much stuff is being taken away from us now, this is one thing that when those kids come to the truck, nobody tells them what to do. They get the ice, and they get to flavor it. It's fun for them and teaches them different things about themselves."

They've been working with Learning is Fun daycare in Palmetto since 2016. But what Chris finds unique about this center is that they will allow their children at the age of two to make decisions for their snow cones. The teachers will still help them, but the children are allowed to put the syrup on and pick the flavor.

"It allows the kids to make choices, and we love that," said Stephanie.

Chris and Stephanie were nominated by their peers in Florida to represent the Florida region of Kona Ice franchises and act as a liaison between their peers and corporate. They were even invited to speak at the annual Kona Konvention in Cincinnati! In front of 1,200 of their fellow franchisees, Chris and Stephanie shared their story.

Kona Ice has easily become a Manatee County staple amongst families over the last eight years, and it's clear to see that they bring more than just smiles to our community. With even more to offer now, we're excited to see the growth of community impact

A MAMMOTH OF A MISSION...

WORDS: Sheri Roca

PICTURES: Gabrielle Versmessen

Did you know that there is a magical place right here in Manatee County where you can not only get up close and personal with elephants but help in the global conservation of these majestic creatures? Just east of Lakewood Ranch, you will find the Myakka Elephant Ranch. This facility is a family-owned and operated nonprofit conservation center that offers once in a lifetime, close encounters with these gentle giants, as well as providing multiple opportunities for you to help ensure their survival, both locally and globally.

The Elephant Ranch was opened in 1986 by Jorge Barreda, but when his son, Lou Barreda, decided to attend the International Elephant Conservation and Research Symposium in South Africa in 2019, he decided to found the nonprofit and focus on global conservation, education, and awareness.

Then, the Myakka Elephant Ranch truly came to be. Soon after, they opened the doors to visitors with the idea that personal experience, interaction, and education are the key to preserving these loveable beasts.

Until recently, there were three elephants housed at the 30-acre ranch: two female Mainland Asian elephants, Carol and Patty, who were purchased in order to retire them from the entertainment industry, and a female African elephant and matriarch of the group, Lou.

Sadly, Lou passed away in her sleep on August 15th, but she will forever live in the hearts of so many people and elephants who loved her for years and those who only got to spend a short time with her.

Myakka Elephant Ranch, or MER, and its conservation involvement is truly a family effort. Lou Barreda holds the title

of CEO, while his sister, Julia Braren, is the COO. Both are very involved in the day-to-day workings of the ranch. You will likely find Lou and their father, Jorge, supervising the various Elephant Encounters, sharing facts and interesting elephant information throughout. Julia can be found at the front desk, checking in guests and answering questions.

The Spa Encounter is one of four unique experiences available at MER, allowing the general public to get close and personal with the mammoth mammals. As it is about to begin, Carol slowly meanders into the barn, trunk swinging, to stop in front of the two dozen or so paid participants waiting expectantly. Almost as soon as her bath commences, she begins to sway gently, eyes closed, to the soothing sounds of Phil Collins singing, "You'll Be in My Heart."

According to the gentlemen, water is essential to pachyderms' mental and physical health, and they need to be bathed every day. And although an elephant has very thick skin to help protect them from the elements, they are so sensitive they can feel a mosquito.

With some direction from Jorge and Lou, groups of two or three captivated visitors take turns rinsing her off, brushing her down with a natural, organic soap, and even giving her a pedicure. Lifting a foot without prompting to have her toes washed and an oil applied to her nails, Carol is seemingly at peace and perfectly docile, purring softly, clearly enjoying the water, the attention, and the human interaction. According to Julia, the elephants thrive on human interaction, and it's a significant part of their stimulation. And, on days when there are no scheduled encounters, the elephants follow them around most of the day, looking for attention.

The Educational Encounter begins after each of the elephants has been thoroughly cleaned and pampered. During this time, the focus is on learning more about elephants, and one or two of the kids are invited to give the gentle giants a snack. As a long trunk reaches down to collect a carrot, Lou peppers the audience with interesting tidbits about that amazing appendage, explaining that the trunk

has more than 40,000 muscles and can be used for breathing, smelling, drinking, and sounding an alarm in case of danger.

There are even two "fingers" at the end that can pick up an object as small as a dime. Each encounter offers many opportunities to be close enough to touch the elephants and take incredible photos with your remarkable new friends.

Julia concludes the Educational Encounter with more information about the importance of global elephant conservation and how we can help. According to Julia: "MER is always trying to find new ways to cultivate change and for humans and elephants to coexist." But the information and statistics are staggering.

Nearly 100 elephants die each day worldwide, and there are less than 500,000 elephants left on the planet. Do the math. And the primary predator is humans. Between poaching elephants for ivory and elephant-human conflict caused by the encroachment of their habitat, the numbers are dwindling fast. But there are a variety of ways that you can help, from right here at home.

Proceeds from booking an Elephant Encounter or making a direct donation to Myakka Elephant Ranch are used to house and feed the elephants, as well as helping to fund the continued expansion and renovation of the grounds. A portion is also allocated to supporting the International Elephant Foundation.

Because MER recognizes the importance of fostering a love for elephants in the next generation of conservationists, your contributions also help to fund educational field trips at no cost to local schools.

You can also participate in the Conservation Pen Pal Program or Art Exchange Program, available through the MER website. By sharing your love of elephants in the form of art or the written word with children in areas where human-elephant conflict is prevalent, you will be helping to educate and inspire change.

You could even host your own fundraiser for elephants. Raise money washing cars or selling tickets to your talent show. Be creative and think as big as an elephant, with endless possibilities!

You are even helping by simply spreading the word about elephant conservation.

• To make a donation or get information on elephant encounters and elephant conservation projects, visit their website: www.myakkaelephantranch.org.

Play THE POWER of

WORDS: healthychildren.org

More than just a chance to have fun, play is serious business when it comes to a child's health and development. From peek-a-boo to pat-a-cake and hide-and-seek to hopscotch, the many forms of play enrich a child's brain, body, and life in important ways.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) clinical report, The Power of Play: A Pediatric Role in Enhancing Development in Young Children, explains how and why playing with both parents and peers is key to building thriving brains, bodies, and social bonds-all important in today's world. Research shows play can improve children's abilities to plan, organize, get along

with others, and regulate emotions. In addition, play helps with language, math, and social skills and even helps children cope with stress.

Age-specific ideas for playful learning

Learning is best fueled by tapping into a child's natural urge to play rather than just outside factors like test scores. As they actively engage with and joyfully discover their world, children gain 21st-century skills that increasingly call for teamwork and innovation.

38

The AAP encourages parents to use play to help meet their child's health and developmental milestones, beginning from birth. Some examples of ways to do this:

Birth-Six Months Old

• Playful learning can start with a baby's first smile. Responding with a smile of your own is a form of play that also teaches a baby a critical social-emotional skill: "You can get my attention and a smile from me anytime you want-just by smiling yourself."

• Imitate your baby's coos and babbles and have a back-andforth "conversation" using your baby's sounds as a prompt.

This sort of vocal turn-taking forms the basis of social language skills.

• Show your baby interesting objects, such as a brightly colored toy. Let them bring safe objects to their mouth to explore and experience new textures.

• Place your baby in different positions so they can see the world from different angles. Supervised tummy time play is great for this.

Seven-Twelve Months Old

• Make sure your baby has a safe environment to crawl and explore.

• Give your baby opportunities to learn that their actions have effects-for example when they drop a toy, and it falls to the ground. Put a few toys within reach of your baby so they can take the toys out and play with them.

• Use a mirror to show your baby their different facial expressions.

• Play peek-a-boo. This reinforces object permanence, the idea that something still exists even if you can see it. You'll know your baby gets the idea if you hide a toy under a blanket and they go looking for it.

• Expose your baby to a variety of sensory experiences. Taking them outside to play on the grass or catch bubbles, for example, is a great way to do this.

One-Three Years Old

• When choosing child care and preschools, look for those that include unstructured playtime. Playful learning, where children take the lead and follow their own curiosity, should be the main focus of high-quality early childhood education.

• Let your child play with blocks, empty containers, wooden spoons, shape sorters, and puzzles. Simple and inexpensive objects are some of the best ways to support a child's creativity and grasp of how the world works. Remember, it is parents' and caregivers' presence and attention that enriches children-not fancy electronic gadgets.

• Give your child opportunities to play with peers. This is a good age to try a parent-supervised playdate.

• Help your child explore her body through different movementsfor example, walking, jumping, and standing on one leg.

• Provide opportunities for make-believe play-for example, pretending to drink out of an empty cup or offering toys that enable pretend play.

• Read regularly to and with your child. Encourage pretend play based on these stories. Ask your child to tell you what else might happen in the story.

• Sing songs and play rhythms so that your child can learn and join in the fun. Encourage moving to the beat. Begin to introduce some age-appropriate games like Simon Says.

39

Four-Six Years Old

• Provide opportunities for your child to sing, dance and draw. Activities that involve music and art support cognitive, socialemotional, and multisensory skills.

• Tell stories to your child and ask questions about what they remember.

• Give your child time and space to act out imaginary scenes, roles, and activities. You can provide dress-up clothes and props but allow play to be unstructured. Remember that some boredom allows for creativity.

• Allow your child to move between make-believe games and reality-for example, playing house and helping you with chores.

• Schedule time for your child to interact with friends to practice socializing and building friendships. These are great opportunities to encourage sharing and cooperative play.

• Encourage your child to try a variety of movements in a safe environment for example, hopping, swinging, climbing, and doing somersaults.

• Balance media use and screen time with "real world" activities. Age-appropriate media can have benefits for older children, especially if you watch and play with them. But real-time social interactions and play are much better for children than digital media for learning. Create a family media plan to set some ground rules, such as no media at the dinner table or in the bedroom.

• Encourage your child's school to offer recess and playful learning approaches in addition to more structured learning activities like reading, memorization, and worksheets.

Play as a toxic stress buster

In addition to boosting a child's health and development, play helps to build safe, stable, and nurturing relationships that buffer

against toxic stress and build social-emotional resilience. The mutual joy and one-on-one interaction that happens during play can manage the body's stress response. In one study, three to four-year-old children anxious about entering preschool were two times more likely to feel less stressed when allowed to play for 15 minutes compared to classmates who listened to a story.

Types of play: Mix it up

Different types of play have different benefits for children:

Toys & Object Play

When playing with an object, such as a toy, babies become little scientists. They use their sensory-motor skills to explore its properties and conduct "experiments." To learn if an object is solid, for example, they might bang it on the floor. Preschoolage children also use objects to develop abstract thought and concepts like symbolism, using a banana as a telephone, for example, along with sharing and taking turns.

Physical Play

Physical fun, such as free play during recess, helps develop children's motor skills, prevent childhood obesity, and build emotional intelligence. The gentle thrill of a playground slide, for example, lets a child build confidence as they take risks in a relatively safe environment. Games such as duck-duck-goose and tag also help children build other socio-emotional skills, such as empathy, as children learn to be careful not to hurt others by tapping someone too hard, for example. You can also provide opportunities for organized sports to learn teamwork.

Outdoor Play

Outdoor play is particularly important because it lets children use all their senses to build skills like spatial awareness and balance. It can also improve a child's attention span. Studies suggest that young children in countries where schools allow more time for recess see more academic success as children get older. Yet, an estimated 30% of U.S. kindergarten children no longer have recess. Advocate for safe playgrounds in your community; exposure to nature helps children appreciate the importance of climate resilience.

Pretend Play

This type of play lets young children experiment with different social roles and learn to cooperate. Dress-up, make-believe, and imaginary play also encourage creativity and builds more complex negotiation, communication, and language skills. ("You be the teacher, and I will be the student," a child might say.)

Remember: Giving your child plenty of opportunities to play is one of the best ways to help them grow into curious, creative, healthy, and happy adults equipped with the skills they need today. Next time your child asks to play with you, jump at the opportunity! Share the joy of discovery as you connect with each other and the world around you.

RESPONDING TO EARLY LITERACY!

WORDS: Kara Leavy

48

riendly's Book Club: Safety Summer was a success once again! The Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County (ELC) put together this program to promote early literacy and help children build relationships with law enforcement and first responders. This program has been around since 2020 and has become a success with the help of the Palmetto Police Department, Bradenton Police Department, Manatee County Sheriff's Office, and the Parrish Fire Department.

Friendly's Book Club is an opportunity for law enforcement and first responders to visit local child care sites and read with the children. Enough books are provided so that children can read along with the officer and bring a copy home at the end of the day. Each visit is another book to add to their at-home library. Manatee County law enforcement officers and first responders read to these children and shared necessary safety tips.

This summer, we had some exciting experiences in the classroom. Deputy Skylar brought dress-up sheriff's uniforms! He also dressed up as a dinosaur to go along with the story "How Do Dinosaurs Stay Safe" by Jane Yolen. The children were absolutely ecstatic.

In addition to these fun times, a few deputies did a classic swearing of "Junior Deputies" by presenting the children with a golden sticker sheriff's badge, and the children pledged to be safe and follow the rules.

Officer Webber at the Palmetto Police Department read with such enthusiasm and engaged with children after reading by doing safety-related activities.

One of the biggest advocates for early literacy is Mike Williamson, Division Chief of the Parrish Fire Department. We wanted to share a personal point of view of Friendly's Book Club, so I asked Mr. Williamson a few questions to describe Friendly's Book Club and what it means to him.

Mike said: "The best moment for us as firefighters is to see all the children so enthusiastic about having firefighters read to them. After we complete the reading, they share their thoughts about the meaning of the story." He continues: "We teach the essentials of fire safety from stop, drop and roll, Exit Drills in the Home (EDITH), and never to play with matches. We also enhance the importance of knowing your address and phone number, along with how and when to dial 911."

When Officer Small of the Bradenton Police Department heard a child mention meeting a police dog, he was determined to make this dream come true. We met the lovely hound dog Liberty who helps find missing people in Manatee County.

At the ELC, we are so proud of our community members and what we can accomplish when we work together. We want to thank all the law enforcement and first responders in Manatee County for their dedication to our community. Together we can inspire our children to be active community members while teaching the fundamentals of early literacy.

WORK OF ART IN THE MAKING…

WORDS & PICTURES: Gabrielle Versmessen

ArtCenter Manatee released its rebranding to the Herrig Center for the Arts at its groundbreaking ceremony held last month!

As a Downtown Bradenton staple for the past 85 years, ArtCenter Manatee began construction on a new 28,000-square-foot, two-story facility at the end of September. The builder is NDC Construction, and the architects are Wannemacher Jensen Architects. They have even received an award already for building design from the Tampa American Institute of Architects. They are hoping to have the new facility completed by late 2024.

Carla Nierman, Executive Director for ArtCenter Manatee, said: "Our year-round residents come from Sarasota, Manatee, Hillsborough, and Pinellas County. Our customers and guests come from 49 states, Canada, and Europe. These and our future friends are who this project is for."

Wanting to keep a healthy balance between new development and green space, Carla said that this new building will make room for a community park and sculpture garden.

50

"This project will change the landscape as you come into Downtown Bradenton. We are happy to have an opportunity to keep that focus and create a space where the community can gather."

In addition to the urban landscaping, this facility will have an expanded gallery and more classrooms, offices, and storage space. ArtCenter Manatee wants to meet the growing demand for visual art classes, exhibits, and other arts programming.

"The entrance to our Friendly City will be made better because of the ArtCenter," said Mayor Gene Brown. He expressed his gratitude for the ArtCenter Manatee choosing to stay in Bradenton.

ArtCenter Manatee plans to stay open during most of the construction of the new building, and classes, exhibits, and events will continue as scheduled. Bradenton Riverfront Partners has donated the land for this project.

"The project would never have gotten off the ground without this generous gift," said Linda Enberg, a member of the Board of Directors for ArtCenter Manatee.

The name change to Herrig Center for the Arts was done in gratitude for the donation of $2 million from The Steve & Natalee Herrig Family Foundation. Other donors include the Bishop Parker Foundation, the Johnson Singer Foundation, the Bradenton Area Convention Center and Visitors Bureau, Bradenton CRA, Johnson PhotoImaging, Hatfield Development, and the State of Florida.

Additionally, the public portion of the ArtCenter Manatee's Capital Campaign was announced at the groundbreaking. The Bishop Parker Foundation offered a $500,000 Challenge Grant that will match all donations received up to $500,000. The goal of the public campaign is to raise an additional $5.5 million.

Manatee Palms hosted the Easterseals Southwest Florida Artwork Exhibit back in August. Occurring a few times each year, this exhibit showcases the work created in the Art Program by individuals in the Adult Services day program. Beginning in 2016, the Art Program by Easterseals Southwest Florida provides those with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy professional art instruction and create their own artwork.

The artists are able to create in a variety of mediums and techniques, such as acrylic and watercolor painting, ceramics, and other mixed-media projects. Ana has been an active participant in Easterseals since 1995. Her work is pictured throughout the exhibition, and she loves to paint in bright colors. She has been painting for 34 years and loves painting animals and nature scenes most of all.

The artwork on display celebrated and honored the different abilities of adults in the disabled community. All artwork sold at the event benefitted the artists to create another step toward independence as well as the art department for classroom supplies. Going forward, the work created in the Art Program will be posted and distributed at the new Goodwill Venice Bookstore. Tom Waters, President and CEO of Easterseals Southwest Florida, said: "It's all about family and partnership and teamwork."

Shary, owner of Manatee Palms. She was gifted a portrait of her dog for hosting the exhibition.

Easterseals Southwest Florida has been part of the SarasotaManatee community since 1946, offering high-quality care and services. They provide support, therapy, education, and employment opportunities to children and adults with special needs and abilities.

MARAUDERS HAD A BALL AT TILLMAN!

WORDS & PICTURES: School District of Manatee County

Ahandful of professional baseball players were special guests at Tillman Elementary in Palmetto. Brandan Bidois, Elijah Birdsong, Owen Kellington, Patrick Reilly, and Landon Tomkins are pitchers for the Bradenton Marauders, our local minor-league team for the Pittsburgh Pirates. They joined third and fourth-grade students, as well as physical education teachers Tyler Bench, Kyle Mauk, and Hunter McGarry.

The players used their rocket arms (and legs) to play an epic game of kickball on the school's baseball field. Shortly after the game was underway, there was a commotion from the sidelines. The students were shouting for Marty the Marauder as he made his way across the campus playground.

After many hugs and high-fives from their favorite local mascot, the kickball match continued. Before the class period ended, the players held a Q&A with students to talk about baseball, college, and more. At least three of the players were drafted out of college, and one from high school. A fifth was signed as an international free agent from Australia.

Most of them have been playing baseball since the age of three or four – a fact that made the students gasp. Many questions

were directed at Marty, who usually answered with some kind of crazy dance.

The Marauders had one last gift for the school and presented Principal Marla Massi-Blackmore with 150 tickets to the team's last home game. The teammates posed for photos with their new friends and even signed a young boy's cast before heading back to Pirate City to prepare for a doubleheader!

Crossing Homework Stress Off the List!

WORDS: Christa Hardin

As you know, kids learn differently from one another, just as we know this to be true for adults as well. Since we all have different learning styles, these nuances also carry into our children's classrooms.

Whatever your child's age and stage, it's so important to empower them to find their best learning styles and help their teachers understand and support their educational habits and uniqueness.

But how does your child learn best? To figure out your child's best learning formats, you'll most likely be the one sleuthing alongside your child (or multiple kids) as you learn this together.

Whether your child is in kindergarten or 12th grade, you are their main advocate.

Yes, you are the throughline in it all – they're more likely passed on from one teacher to the next across the timeline of their learning journey, but you are the one consistent factor in their educational lives.

As such, you must take that job seriously. But don't worry. There's a lot of grace and a major learning curve, so take a deep breath and smile, too.

You also love them more than anyone else in the world. And so, as you find their best strides for school and especially homework, here are some tips to help you and your child smooth out the learning curves together.

These tips will help your child resist the unhealthy aspects of their defense strategies that arise automatically when they're agitated and activated in their body's fight or flight system.

Instead of staying in stress, which isn't an easy position at all to learn in, your goal will be to help them relax just enough to be able to focus (by the way, these tips can also work for moms and dads).

1. Since kids often feel out of control on the big things at school or during homework sessions, bring them back into their body's basic capacities when they seem out of control by teaching them breathwork. Teach them to inhale deeply for four seconds and then exhale for four seconds to help slow their heart rate and clear their minds as often as needed. Remind them that when they tense up, they often forget to breathe, and remind them how good and cleansing it feels to do so as you model it for them.

2. Teach your child a tailored "Pomodoro method" where they study for 25 minutes and then break for five, or for kids with ADHD, even five minutes on and off can be so helpful. Your child can also do a study session alongside their favorite celebrity online (for example, my high school daughter likes to study with a video of Rory Gilmore at her desk on YouTube, and my daughter in college loves her Spotify study playlists, like "Taylor Swift piano cover"). An important caveat is to see which session is helpful and which is distracting.

3. When they get frustrated, teach them to monitor their posture and cross their arms and legs while deep breathing to connect and engage both sides of the brain and body. Help them to go to their "safe place" while they do this by internally saying, "I'm safe. I'm breathing, and everything is OK. I'm in control." You can also teach them to cross their arms in a butterfly hug and to tell themselves, "Yes, you're doing so well! You've got this."

4. Check how the five senses affect them. Find a quiet room for focusing or use white noise with cool air. Make sure (especially here in Florida) that they drink water, eat protein, and take a walk to stimulate the brain. See how the phone affects their ability to study and challenge them to put it behind their computer or in another room, where they will think about it less. You can also keep it with you if they're too distracted.

5. When they get frustrated, instead of saying "stop," ask questions such as, "Was that hard for you?" or "What may help?" It helps your kids to experience the sense that "I can share what's going on inside of me," versus the hiding so many of us did as kids.

6. Speak encouragement to your child but resist the urge to do their homework for them. Say phrases like, "Let me help you to get there," as you perhaps fix them a snack. Even the smallest step should be encouraged gently, such as by saying, "Look at you! You've made it this far," versus making them feel they have to strive for perfection. Help them to use this language as it translates into their brain like this: "I got halfway there. I'm making progress."

7. Teach them that pivoting in different directions is OK and central to understanding how life works, but also not to quit projects or teams. As you know, we have to fail until we realize we're on the wrong course, but taking brave steps ahead has such value.

8. When your child feels like quitting a project due the next day, remember this is just an indication that they need rest. Try not to say things you don't want to be repeated (or remembered). Pause and keep your mouth closed to let the moment pass, and just breathe.

9. When you're stressed, or they're stressed (or your spouse or co-parent), find a code word or phrase you can offer, such as "Breathe" or "Let's take five," as needed.

10. If you are irritated and past the point of merely tense, anxious, or a bit overstimulated, it's helpful for one or both of you to take 20 minutes to wind down, as that's usually the perfect amount of time.

Take the points that are most helpful and perhaps save this article so you can reference it when you need it again. If you need more help empowering kids, you can also find more tips from Dr. Becky Bailey of Conscious Discipline.

And one more thing - take heart. You're doing great already. Since your child is watching you for one of their biggest learning curves, be sure to let them know when you are the one dysregulated - they will be adults too before you know it and still need grace then, just as you do. It's also a great reminder that it's OK and normal to struggle sometimes, so don't hide. Showing them your wise, gracious, and stoic perseverance will get the job done best!

Part of the Your Classics. Your Choices. (You Are the Classics) series. While readers can follow the original tale of Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, Matt London's twist allows readers to investigate alternative routes, different character developments, surprising new endings, and fresh plot twists. These new options will fascinate fans of the classic and hopefully hook hesitant readers to delve into this classic with a new interactive format. Leaving A Fall Fingerprint…

Fall has arrived, and although it might not be as noticeable as it is in other parts of the United States, Floridians can still celebrate just the same with pumpkin spice, apple cider, and autumn-themed decorations.

Of course, when I think of what this season represents, I picture trees changing with various yellow, brown, orange, red, and even purple leaves. Living in other states as a child, like North Carolina and West Virginia, I experienced this transition firsthand.

With Bradenton's weather continuing to be warm well into November, we won't get to experience that same dramatic change. However, that obstacle didn't stop my son and I from recreating that effect by making Fall Trees with Fingerprint Leaves. Not only is this a great activity for hand-eye coordination, but it is also a wonderful way to teach young children about the seasons and to reinforce colors to preschoolers.

If you would also like to recreate the Fall Trees with Fingerprint Leaves craft, you will need the following:

- Non-Toxic Acrylic Paint

- Construction Paper

- Safety Scissors

- Glue Stick

- Paper Towels

- Container for paint

Tip: Most of these items can be found at a dollar or craft store.

To get started with the Fall Trees with Fingerprint Leaves craft, I first selected acrylic paints that I thought represented the changing of the leaves. This included brown, yellow, orange, red, and purple.

I then added these colors to a divided container so my son could dip his fingers into the paints and lay it on a paper towel to prevent spills. A paper plate would have worked just as well for the paint.

Tip: Protect your child's clothing with an apron or an old, oversized t-shirt.

Next, I had my son cut out a tree trunk from brown construction paper. He made the top look like branches.

Then, he pasted the tree trunk onto another piece of construction paper with the glue stick. He did this for a white piece and a blue piece of construction paper.

Next, it was time to start making the leaves with his fingertips, and we realized that there were a couple of ways that he could do this. This could be accomplished by dipping his fingers in each color and wiping them off each time he started a new color or mixing them as he dipped in his fingertips.

My son decided to try both ways of dipping his fingers in the paint, and each gave the colors a different effect. Plus, he even decided to add falling leaves. We will display his pictures on a mirror in the foyer of our home to welcome in the fall, but they would also be a great addition in a window or on a file cabinet at work. These tree designs would even make a beautiful cover on a Thanksgiving Card for family members and friends.

I hope your family also has a great time making the Fall Trees with Fingerprint Leaves craft and you enjoy your time together this fall season.

Mission:

To bring law enforcement, kids and families together in a positive, safe environment through sports and academics to build a strong community.

Vision:

Many youth in Manatee County live in neighborhoods threatened by gangs, drugs, violence and poverty. The Manatee Sheriff's Office reports that the most prevalent youth crimes are assault, burglary and vandalism. Studies show that youth engaged with law enforcement officers and other adult mentors are less likely to become involved in these types of crime. PAL provides a safe place where athletics and academic reinforcement instill pride, responsibility, self-confidence, teamwork and respect. We strive to be the most affordable and outstanding sports program in Manatee County. With our dedicated volunteers and law enforcement coaches in the program, PAL provides many opportunities for youth to learn and grow. College scholarships can be the roadmap out of circumstances that prohibit success. PAL athletes often receive college sports and academic scholarships to pursue their education after high school. We believe this is an important way for youth to travel toward success in life. At PAL positive values are taught and support is always provided.

Navigating Community Resources…

WORDS: Women's Resource Center

When facing difficulties, finding the right resources can be overwhelming and challenging. The Women's Resource Center has always been a reliable destination for individuals seeking access to community resources. We are excited to announce an advancement in this process. The team at the Women's Resource Center has worked tirelessly in 2023 to launch a new tool that helps our staff and volunteers navigate community inquiries. This tool helps to identify the most suitable resources and deliver information to clients clearly and concisely.

Our United Way Suncoast-funded Community Navigator has spent months researching and onboarding local and national resources that could benefit our community resource guide. This guide now includes information on almost 300 organizations which have been vetted for accuracy and accountability. Each resource profile provides information about the service, including description, location, hours, and contact details.

By tracking the most frequently requested resources, such as housing, legal aid, and employment resources, we can focus more on identifying resources in those categories. The Women's Resource Center's Resource Advisors are trained to assist clients

in identifying their needs in a friendly and empathetic manner. They are skilled in using our system to connect clients with the exact resources they require. We understand that a helping hand can make a significant difference during difficult times.

"I called the Women's Resource Center when my husband passed. I hadn't worked for over 20 years and was not confident in how to manage my finances or where to begin. My Resource Advisor was so kind in helping me understand my options. I even connected with a Career Counselor to begin my job search," a client reported. Sometimes in life, we just need someone to listen and help us map out our next steps.

The Women's Resource Center offers this vital program during regular operating hours, Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to noon. You can contact a Resource Advisor at (941)256-9721 for assistance. Whenever you are unsure where to begin, we are here to support you in overcoming any obstacles.

If you are an organization that would like to submit a resource to our community resource guide, please email info@mywrc.org.

"Living in Parrish and North River is the 'American Dream' come true," said District One County Commissioner James Satcher. "From growing families to those in their golden years, this park will be a symbol of prosperity and a place for the community to enjoy our many blessings." The Manatee Board of County Commissioners approved $15.39 million in funding for the park.

Embracing Mister Rogers' Wisdom in a Digital World

WORDS: Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading

The Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading welcomes you to be a part of an exciting, upcoming project—fully funded by The Patterson Foundation—featuring the book When You Wonder, You're Learning – Mister Rogers' Enduring Lessons for Raising Creative, Curious, Caring Kids by Gregg Behr and Ryan Rydzewski.

Playful and practical, When You Wonder, You're Learning shows parents, educators, and neighbors the many ways they might follow in Rogers' footsteps, sharing his "tools for learning" with digital-age kids. With insights from thinkers, scientists, and teachers, the book explores how kids and their parents can excel at what Mister Rogers taught best: being human.

Book circles consist of at six individuals coming together for four engaging meetups between September 12 and January 25 to investigate curiosity, belonging, and joy. When you register, The Patterson Foundation will add even more sparkle!

• A copy of When You Wonder, You're Learning – Mister Rogers' Enduring Lessons for Raising Creative, Curious, Caring Kids for each participant.

• A discussion guide written for adults with prompts for each chapter of the book (Spanish version available upon request)

BLAZING A TRAIL…

WORDS & PICTURES: Gabrielle Versmessen

In a town where baseball and football are the dominant youth sports, two Saint Stephen's Episcopal School seniors are overcoming challenges and defying stereotypes to put Manatee County girls' lacrosse on the map.

Sienna Cassella and Ashling Marshall have put in an unbelievable amount of effort throughout their youth, especially at the high school level, to earn scholarships to play lacrosse at separate Division I colleges. Their inspiring journey is a testament to what hard work and dedication can do for aspiring athletes.

The varsity girls' lacrosse team at Saint Stephen's Episcopal School (SSES) went to the state tournament last year, something a team from Manatee County has never done before. In the last three years, their girls' lacrosse team has won Districts twice, went to Regional Finals two times, and won Regionals to go on to States last year.

What sets Sienna and Ashling apart is not only their individual talent, but they have also displayed dominance on the draw. They have a unique partnership, as they've played together for six years on elite travel teams and in high school. They complement each other's strengths, making them a formidable duo. Having over 500 draw controls, and almost 400 goals between them, these girls have been a dominant force.

Sienna was first introduced to the game when she was seven years old by Jason

77

and Phyllis Morales, but at the time, the only recreation program was Monsters in Lakewood Ranch. She was encouraged and inspired to play by her grandfather, Dr. Charles Tomeo, who had played in college. Sienna and her family made the drive to the other side of town for the first year and she fell in love with the game.

It was around this time that Sienna's uncle, Nick Pagnotta, came to Sienna's dad, Pat Cassella, and mentioned that he would like to get his son playing. Nick and Pat had the idea to ask Dr. Tomeo if he would be willing to put lacrosse under the Manatee Wildcats umbrella, a successful local sports organization.

For the first few years, Pat oversaw the girls' lacrosse program, and Nick was in charge of the boys' program.

"Now, it's been 10 years, and Wildcats has one of the most successful rec lacrosse programs on the west coast of Florida," said Pat. Wildcats has since produced great high school players and several Division I athletes who are currently playing in college.

Sienna grew up in a region where lacrosse was still in its infancy and faced limited access to coaching and competition as a

result. However, she didn't let that deter her. She dedicated her time to honing her stick skills, her lacrosse IQ, and practicing tirelessly in her backyard. She sought opportunities to play at clinics and traveled long distances nationally to attend elite lacrosse showcases and tournaments.

10 years ago, you would be hard-pressed to find a girls' lacrosse team to join, whether that be at the recreation, club, or high school level. Today, five area high schools and multiple recreation and club organizations offer lacrosse.

Indoctrinating this North American sport into the schools began at Saint Stephen's Episcopal School (SSES) in 2008 with Rob Marshall, Ashling's father. Rob first introduced it as part of the PE program, and the following year, a club program was started at the school!

Ashling's path to Division I lacrosse is clearly a family affair. Rob had played lacrosse in college and also having an older brother who played, Ashling began playing lacrosse at the age of three. She split her time playing in the northeast and Florida. As a Delaware native, she stood out in the sport.

The girls saw the untapped potential for lacrosse to flourish and set their sights on competing at the college level. Due to their speed, agility, stick skills, and tenacity, these young women earned several scholarship offers from Division I lacrosse programs. Sienna signed with Rutgers University in New Jersey, and Ashling signed with Bryant University in Rhode Island.

Because lacrosse is such a popular northeastern sport, Pat said there is a stigma that Florida girls aren't as good at lacrosse. Sienna and Ashling are fighting to prove them wrong, though.

Rob said: "These two are the leading stat girls. Some of their biggest accomplishments are their combinations around the circle. We are extremely proud coaches and fathers."

But their accomplishments don't stop on the field. Sienna and Ashling have earned Head of School and Director's List at SSES and were inducted into the National Honors Society in their sophomore year. They have both served three years as class officers as well as served the community through volunteering.

"Most of my volunteering is done in the summer in Delaware with the local Chamber of Commerce. But during COVID, Sienna and I started a lacrosse club," Ashling said. "There was a middle schooler I was mentoring at the time who was unable to return to school, even with a mask. We would talk, and I would keep her company, but also, I was teaching her how to play lacrosse. It was really nice being able to provide her with that companionship while getting to share my passion with someone."

Sienna joined a young women's organization to help around the community and raise money for a variety of nonprofits. Additionally, she has volunteered with Wildcats to coach and train girls interested in lacrosse. But one of her most rewarding experiences was volunteering to support the Foundation for Dreams.

Sienna said: "Foundation for Dreams lets the kids feel a sense of independence. Although things might be more difficult for them because of the challenges they face, it helps them feel a sense of normalcy. The staff are able to adapt activities to allow

the kids to do things that we can do, like sports, horseback riding, and swimming."

The efforts Sienna and Ashling have exhibited are a testament to their character, perseverance, and passion. Their strong work ethic and sportsmanship make them exemplary student-athletes. They prove that with hard work and determination, regardless of geography or background, you can be successful and overcome whatever obstacles you may face.

Sienna and Ashling have the same advice to any girls interested in trying lacrosse out: Go out there and join with your friends. Sports activities are always more fun when you have friends on your team, but when trying something new, it helps to have a friend there to break down any awkwardness or barriers.

As they embark on their collegiate journeys, Sienna and Ashling carry with them the hopes and aspirations of future generations of lacrosse players in Florida, proving that the Sunshine State has a place on the national lacrosse stage.
