GREETINGS

There is a hint of surprise, then pleasure, that comes when realizing another season has passed and we’re looking towards the next. Looking at our recent year leads me to look backwards in deeper time. Why? Do I need to answer that? I am not sure. An intuition I guess…

Here is a journal entry from 40 years ago:

Thursday, June 5, 1994

Duchampian non-sequitur!

The fight is on! …

Figuration as parallel to characterization.

“Alas poor Yorick! I knew him well, Horacio.”

The Dance is “the retarded child of incestuous parents.”

The Dance is “the sleeping beauty.”

The Dance is dead and risen.

The American Lady “sees America dancing.”

The Dance is the pastime of cultural terrorists…

“What if we kidnapped Merce Cunningham?”

The Dance is aerobics for amputees.

The Dance is a Ballet lobotomy, is a study in ritualize seduction.

The dictum: A pursuit of the impeccable gesture. The modus: The domestication of bodily violence. The creed: “OUR INSIDES ARE NOW OUTSIDE!”

The future?

We plan to re-choreograph the original assault on Omaha Beach in Normandy.(!)

But first, please repeat after us:

“Yea though I walk (spin, slide and run) through the Valley of Death, I shall fear no evil for Though ART with me”

Amen

Cheeky, dark, playful? All at the service of feeling the contours of our present moment and the future of New York Live Arts.

Some highlights of last season:

• The encore run of Curriculum II opened the season.

• We were invited by Van Cleef and Arpels to be a part of Dance Reflections Festival with two works - L’Etang by Gisèle Vienne and Mailles by Dorothée Munyaneza.

• Live Artery (2024) was the most ambitious and successful yet! The expanded festival featured 18 events over the course of 12 days, supporting 26 lead artists and their works and included for the first time three offsite partner venues. We were proud to be one of the NY theaters that helped revive the Under the Radar Festival with two of our shows presented in partnership with Under The Radar. The highlight of Live Artery and the performing arts conference season was certainly Weathering by Faye Driscoll (our Randjelović/Stryker Resident Commissioned Artist 2022/23)

• Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company returned to Harlem Stage with Memory Piece, my first solo in quite some time and a new company work, People, Places & Things

• At the 2024 edition of the prestigious Festival TransAmerique (FTA) in Montreal, there were works by American artists Emily Johnson and Faye Driscoll. Both had been Live Arts residency artists, whose works we commissioned. American artists are rarely invited to FTA!

• Fresh Tracks 2024 was one of the strongest cohorts and was featured for the first time in the New York Times

So our “manifesto” for next season could be: God is the change hiding in the details.

Don’t regret the past. Stay open and curious about the Future!

Once more - with feeling!

Dear Supporters, Artists, and Friends,

In thinking over the past year and all that we have done as an organization, the artists we have supported, the partnerships we’ve been part of, the conversations we’ve had, the lessons we’ve learned and continue to learn, the opportunities to feel and to process through art that we have been given, and the critical time we are living through in this country, I can not help but think about our collective capacity for love and survival in this age. I think about that a lot, perhaps more than I would like to. I reflect on the meaning of our work, the impact it currently has and the potential it holds, as well as the things it may change.

Bill often says: “art is what happens when something is being pushed against.” If we hold that to be true, art not only has impact, it embodies impact.

Art embodies the essence of change and force and beyond this force lies a foundation even deeper: our capacity for love and connectedness.

Our capacity for connection, driven by art-making and live gathering, has been and remains central to our work. Near the end of fiscal year 2024, Bill was asked to remount his seminal 1994 work Still/Here at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) and we were all very excited, especially as our ongoing conversations about Bill’s legacy include remounting works, and identifying which pieces will ultimately define his artistic legacy. Still/Here, a landmark piece—both groundbreaking and controversial at the time, certainly qualifies. In preparation, I turned once again to a

FROM BILL AND KIM

conversation Bill Moyers had with Bill T. in 1997 about the piece.

During the creation of Still/Here, Bill posed profound questions about human knowledge and connection. These remain prescient questions today, and it’s important to ask ourselves these art-driven questions in terms of the survival of democracy, humanity, the planet, the human spirit. What do you know that I don’t know? What do we have in common? What does movement mean? What does survival mean?

These questions are relevant on so many levels–personally, professionally, for the field, for the earth, for world politics. And, my concern is that rather than growing closer together focusing on our commonalities, we continue to be pulled further apart. These are physical metaphors, and as I write this letter I visualize. I see people growing closer together, intertwined, and being pulled apart, barely able to stay connected and hold each other’s weight.

I have always held the deep belief that movement has the ability to cut through barriers faster and more meaningfully than any other form of communication. And to this day, this belief sustains me. Reflecting again on Bill Moyers’ piece about Bill’s work, I experienced a moment of renewed faith in our collective capacity for love and survival in this age. A renewed understanding of the meaning of our roles at New York Live Arts, the impact it has, and what it can, with hope for the future, potentially change.

At the end of the interview Bill talks about joy in the absence of fear, in the absence of worry. “Do that joy dance.” he says to one of the participants in the survival workshops. “I don’t know it” the participant says.

And Bill says without skipping a beat “I bet you do…”

With hope and love,

JOURNEY TO BRAZIL

In July 2023, our team traveled to Brazil, immersing ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the Joinville Dance Festival. There, we engaged in workshops and connected with thousands, participating in conversations around art and environmental justice— discussions that resonate deeply and challenge us to rethink our roles as artists in a changing world.

Our partnership with Brazilian artist Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha allowed us to share our collective aspirations, fears, and resilience, showcasing the power of community and the arts to inspire action.

Throughout this year, we engaged approximately 150 local participants through workshops and discussions, and our presence at Joinville reached over 23,000 audience members, underscoring our commitment to fostering artistic exchange. We successfully hosted 15 workshops and partnered with esteemed organizations, including the Brazilian Institute of Culture and the University of Joinville, amplifying our mission.

CURRICULUM II

Fresh off a jubilant 40th season and a national tour, the Bill T. Jones/ Arnie Zane Company ushered in the fall season at Live Arts—for the first time in nearly a decade—with the triumphant return of Curriculum II

The work continued Bill’s exploration of race, technology, and humanity, drawing on the ideas of Achille Mbembe, Louis Chude-Sokei , and Sylvia Wynter. This remount delved into the historical and ongoing relationship between race and technology through a complex interplay of text, narration, live music, and soundscore. Inspired by Chude-Sokei’s interpretation of Wynter’s concept of the “other” as both marginalized and “that which is to come,” Jones’s title referenced Mbembe’s notion of a “planetary curriculum,” engaging with diverse global archives. Curriculum II juxtaposed formal dance with contemporary issues, blending clarity with poetic fragments and imagery to address urgent cultural

HARLEM STAGE

Bill T. Jones’s engagement with Harlem Stage has had a profound impact on both the institution and the dance world at large. As a central figure in their E-Moves series, he has showcased groundbreaking works like Chapel/ Chapter, setting new benchmarks for artistic and cultural excellence. Bill has been a fierce voice in the conversation around diversity and representation, using his platform to address disparities faced by artists of color and to elevate emerging talent. His work has bridged the gap between the predominantly white downtown dance scene and Harlem’s vibrant cultural community, fostering a richer, more inclusive dance environment in New York.

To celebrate Harlem Stage’s 40 years, Bill and The Company returned to the Gatehouse for a special two-night event. The evening featured an excerpt of The Missing Fruit by emerging choreographer Roderick George and his company, kNoname Artist . Bill and the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company premiered two new works: Memory Piece, a solo for Bill himself, and People Places & Things, an exploration connected to the ongoing Curriculum series being developed by The Company.

The Fresh Tracks program, a cornerstone for emerging artists in New York City since 1965, continued its tradition of supporting new talent. This year’s cohort each received 50 hours of studio space and a $5,000 stipend This increased funding was made possible by a generous grant from the Jerome Foundation , highlighting their significant commitment to early-career choreographers.

In addition to financial support, the artists participated in workshops focused on grant writing, communications, and creative process dialogues led by Nia Love, further enhancing their growth and artistic development.

These resources are crucial for helping emerging artists navigate the financial and logistical challenges of their careers. Fresh Tracks remains a vital platform for advancing choreographers, continuing its legacy of innovation and support in the dance community.

touring opportunities created

Live Artery was created to provide a platform for our residency artists to present their work during the Association of Performing Arts Professionals and the International Society for the Performing Arts conference season in January. Over the years, it has grown to include curated guests. During this period, our building is full of artists, presenters, producers, and audience members, buzzing with energy. It has become a go-to for boundary-pushing performances in January.

In 2024, we expanded beyond the limitations of space and time by partnering with three off-site venues and the Under the Radar Festival when it was cut from The Public Theater, presenting two performances in partnership. The expansion was driven by the growing lack of visibility for American artists on the international stage. The January conference season provides a unique opportunity to showcase work to international and U.S. presenters. Live Artery 2024 was our largest and most successful yet, with soldout shows and a waitlist. Presenters from around the world attended, and artists secured touring and commissions. New York Live Arts is known worldwide.

This year, Live Artery achieved a remarkable expansion, featuring 18 events over 12 days from January 9-20. This showcased the diversity and innovation of contemporary performance art.

This past spring, New York Live Arts unveiled its inaugural Legacy Council, an initiative designed to safeguard and propel Bill T. Jones’ impact on the art world, with Derrick Adams as the founding Chair. The council is built on three core pillars: preserving Bill’s legacy, engaging creatives from all walks of life, and ensuring the vitality of Live Arts programming. The aim? To keep Bill’s influence alive, inspiring new generations while forging meaningful connections and drawing in fresh supporters.

In a moment when the legacies of trailblazing artists like Bill are increasingly vulnerable, the Legacy Council plays a pivotal role. The work is about amplifying Bill’s voice and ensuring his contributions remain resonant, not just within the arts but across society at large. By supporting his ongoing vision, they help secure the future of his extraordinary body of work.

As Bill nears retirement, the Legacy Council’s role becomes even more critical. Their support will help ensure that both his work and the institution he founded continue to thrive, preserving his profound influence on the cultural landscape for generations to come.
